Star Donuts, out in the shopping center off the Borchard exit of the 101 with the Von's, is one of the strongest donut stores in the area. One of the first things you'll notice is that they've got big lettering outside that says "Open 24 Hrs" and then newer big lettering on top of it that adds "Almost." I've never found an hour list to clarify what that means, but I assume it means that they try to be open 24 hours and occasionally close for short periods based on some sort of family need. This is a family-owned one, so you always run into one of the two halves of the couple. They have a lot of those interconnected little tables in a pretty big dining room that never has anyone but me stay, at least in the nighttime when I come in. They have a wide variety of products, including a wider than usual variety of the donuts themselves. The donuts also taste very good. I've had various types and have always been impressed. My mom and her work colleagues also order often from here and speak highly of the quality, although I didn't realize until I came back gushing about the place. I think there's some sort of rule about freebies, because I get surprises in my bag every now and then. I don't mean like the type in an infant's diaper -- I mean donuts, and I think there's been a full long john once. Oh, I just set myself up so badly... Anyway, they don't know me, so it's not like they're being nice just to me, but I don't know what thresholds you have to cross or if it's systematic. (I do order pretty fancy -- translation: expensive -- donuts in general, though.) They have two big cases of muffins, one of regular types and one labeled fat-free and with a similar variety. I tried the chocolate chip one, and it tasted way too good to be fat free. This was mainly because it was loaded in chocolate, to the point of having the whole bottom lined with chocolate chips. The muffin itself was good for fat-free, but I'm wondering if it's just the plain that's fat-free and the others are adding to that base but not necessarily fat-free afterward. I have an ongoing craving and occasional addiction to Apple Fritters done right. My Star Donuts Apple Fritter was near perfection and truly sublime. Sugar ecstasy for a $1.35 in Newbury Park. somebody pinch me i'm dreaming... This is an old school Donut shop that rocks. Service was great friendly, engaging, welcoming and as outlined herein they tossed in a couple of freshly glazed and addicting Donut holes just because. I took one bite and i was hooked. Fast detour on the 101 freeway and I grabbed another Apple Fritter to devour and a dozen assorted for my office. I consider myself an Apple Fritter aficionado and Donut Star rocks. The gold standard was this Amish farm back east that I came across with homemade Fritters while you waited. Watching the apple being cored, diced, sauteed in brown sugar and formed in the freshly mixed dough and then bathed and drizzled in hot melting sugar glaze in front of your very eyes and handed to you warm melt in your mouth succulent goodness. I'm sorry I digress wow I need a moment lol The office loved the assorted goodies from Donut Star as well so it's unanimous this little unassuming Donut shop in Newbury Park is legit and worth a trip trust me... read more

This is just a cute place for a simple donut. Their donuts were pretty okay. I've had better and I've had worse. I am a sucker for blueberry cake donuts and I loved theirs. They are at a really cheap price so you can't go wrong here. So in total I got 2 blueberry cakes, 1 Boston cream, and a regular glazed donut. I paid for the donuts (about $5 or maybe a bit less) and I walked out. I went to my car and grabbed a donut, the lady put in a free glazed twist! I didn't expect it! I also went at around 8ish and there was absolutely no one there. I didn't really talk to the lady either, I just ordered and left, and then unexpectedly I found a free donut! It was so nice of her. Star Donuts is a local gem. I've come here on multiple occasions when I am kin the area for work and they always cure my craving. I typically receive a little extra donut hole as well and who doesn't like donut holes!? Am I right!? For that fact alone, I consider them a spot that goes the extra mile to make me feel special and welcome. Not to mention, they actually greet you when you come through the door. This is huge for me as I feel nobody should ever walk into an establishment regardless of what it is and feel invisible. Their donuts are always fresh, ready and available. I am fond of their blueberry old fashioned and they have a cinnamon twist that is sure not to disappoint as well if that's your kinda thing. Though sometimes hard to find, they even have sprinkled donut holes! If you get there early enough, you should definitely be able to pick some up. Parking is conveniently located in the front of the building and I've personally never had any issues finding somewhere to park. I wandered in here today because my usual donut place had some sort of kitchen malfunction and was closed. I'd driven past this place before, so since I needed 2 dozen donuts for work and it was kind of an emergency, I decided to give them a try. I was immediately blown away by the huge assortment of donuts and the friendly woman who waited on me. Then I saw what looked like a ham and cheese croissant get handed to a customer, all hot and smelling good even to this vegetarian, and I was like, "yeah!" Then, this lady walked in, and everyone said hi to her, and the guy behind the counter went and poured her a coffee without her even asking. What?! Who does that?! I suddenly wanted this to be my donut shop and these people to pour me a Coke Zero when I walked in. So the lady helping me hands me this huge-ass box of donuts, tells me she's given me a couple extra for free, and charges me less than the place I used to go to with the crappy fryer or whatever. Used to go to. Because now I got a new donut shop. Because these donuts got rave reviews at work, and teenagers lie about a lot of things, but not donuts. I am a SUCKER for donuts, always have been. The only thing more exciting to me than a donut shop is a donut shop with an "OPEN 24 HOURS" sign in the window - guiding me home like a beacon. And I always come willingly; what's the point of struggling against the inevitable? Resistance is futile. My visit to Star Donuts was a lovely bit of serendipity. I was trying to get on the 101 Freeway North and I was in the wrong lane. I had to turn into this little shopping center to avoid getting on the freeway in the wrong direction. As I was trying to reorient myself, I suddenly saw the magic words OPEN 24 HOURS. I'm convinced it was a sign from God that I was meant to patronize this establishment and try their donuts. Consider it one of his minor miracles if you will. My friend Joan, my compatriot on this impromptu road trip, agreed and we headed in. We came up with a brilliant plan IMHO which involved each of us ordering a donut and then splitting each of them between the two of us. Doubling our taste bud pleasure without doubling our calorie intake (goodness knows this came in handy later on in the evening during our visit to Cold Stone, but I digress). I was quite excited to see a sign advertising that they carried cronuts, a cross between a croissant and a donut, but unfortunately they were temporarily out of them. Such are the chances one takes when one visits a donut store after 5:00 in the evening - even 24 hour donut shops. I settled on the Wild Mountain Blueberry jelly stuffed donut and Joan selected the Bavarian Cream donut which was stuffed with cream and had a chocolate frosting on top. They didn't have any plastic knives (though the lady offered us a plastic fork) so we used a coffee stirrer to cut them in half. They both had a generous amount of filling. We both agree that the blueberry one was our favorite. The donut was light and airy, had just the right amount of glaze, and the filling was yummy. The Bavarian donut was also good, though in my opinion a little more chocolate frosting on top wouldn't have hurt. The two donuts totaled $1.90. If you're in the mood for something a little heartier than a donut (Who wouldn't want a donut?) they offer a variety of breakfast sandwiches including sausage, egg and cheese bagel; sausage, ham, egg and cheese bagel, jalapeno, cheese & egg bagel, sausage, egg, & cheese bagel; and two sandwiches made on toast - bacon, egg & cheese or sausage egg & cheese. There are a wide variety of beverage options in the cooler to go with whatever you choose. So come on down to Star Donuts. They never close. They'll leave the light on for you! read more
