Had an absolutely terrible experience here with my husband today. Booked the Star Spa gel pedicure online for 69$. It specifically mentions gel is included in the price online. When I got there, they confirmed the treatment I had booked and gave me a pedicure and painted my nails. It was nothing special. The callous removal was basically non existent, which was the whole reason I went. When I checked out, they charged 69$ for the pedicure plus 20$ for the gel. When I asked, they said that I got an upgraded pedicure and it didn't include the gel. They never once said anything until checkout. They also made sure to asked for a 20% tip. The whole thing felt like a scam. I will not be back and will not recommend to anyone. read more

Came here on August 14th for a pedicure. I made sure to call ahead for an appointment, it seems a lot of places here in Newport don't take walk-ins, but also during the summer it seems there's a ton more foot traffic for them. It was a pleasant experience. I'm from the Bay Area where nail salons are on every corner and every place is dying for customers, so this was definitely a change, but a good one! They took their time and didn't seem rushed. Atmosphere was quite nice and pretty clean. Every chair was pretty much full when I was there, and not much commotion, which, I feel like nail salons are notorious for yelling matches, etc. LOL. Kelly did my pedicure and she was so sweet! I'm not used to nail techs being conversational, and I don't mind either, but her conversation was really pleasant. I requested french tips on my toes, and the technique for a french was a little different than what I'm used to, but they came out well! Last month I had my pedi and mani done. I explained before hand that I was on blood thinners and she must be careful not to cut me. WELL, she was using the nippers and sure enough....she cut me. She kept putting some powder on it but it didn't work. After about 15 minutes, it finally stopped bleeding. The one positive thing I'll say is that she genuinely felt bad and was sorry. Fast forward to Tuesday Sept.26th. I went in for my pedi & mani. I had a new person named Andy. I explained my problem and asked that he be very careful. He didn't cut me but he was rough working on my toe nails. I now have an infection and will need to see a Dr. I tried soaking it and using ointments but it's still a problem 4 days later. I was charged $99 for a $55 fill, therefore I feel I was severely overcharged for that service. A fill is $55, as listed on the website. However, Lea charged me $10 for nail shape (they only do square and round, I wanted almond, which is only slightly more angular), $8 for each broken nail (which was two but she insisted it was three, but please note she did not have to apply a tip or do any extra work that she did on my other "in tact" nails to the third nail) which totaled to $24, I did add on a $10 nail polish, however that wasn't even executed properly. If nail shape isn't included in a service, what is? It's a nail appointment for crying out loud. I used to work at this establishment many years ago as a receptionist and I'm quickly realizing the quality of the establishment has changed exponentially. We would charge $10 for stiletto and coffin nails only, as they tended to take more time, which I understood. I do not understand charging for a previously done nail shape whatsoever, considering as I worked there I know how much work is involved in addition to the fact I've been getting my nails done for 15 years. Overcharging a person by nearly $50 to then end up with lackluster nails is absurd. I paid the $10 extra for a polish I hate and that was not applied correctly with the magnet (cat eye) and looks nothing like the nail sample. I would go back and get it fixed but I sincerely want nothing to do with that salon in accordance my last serval experiences. I understand a review can be horrible to a business, and I hate to be that person, but I also feel it to be morally wrong to sit someone down in a chair and then tell them of these price increases when I explicitly told the receptionist I had broken nails. Again, I felt it important to post this, as I found this incredibly inappropriate for surcharge of this capacity to have occurred. SIDENOTE: I would also like to add she was INSISTENT on me getting a full set, which I know I did not need. I can only imagine what else she was trying to up-charge me on, which seemed largely based on my attire and what she assumed I could afford based on that. Inappropriate at best. read more

I used to bring my husband with me in the past to pedicure days. He was a good sport and warmed to the idea of a pampering with a nail clip and food massage, and we laughed every time when they jokingly asked if he wanted color on his nails. Eventually, he did decide to throw caution to the wind and took them up on color, which always catches them off guard. Here, we have come probably a couple dozen times and sometimes we splurge on a deluxe or special pedicure, and sometimes we just want a quick in and out to get back on our tasks for the day. The location is relatively clean, and they have a ton of mani and pedi spots, as well as a huge staff of providers. I have had a variety of different skilled providers at my appointments here. I've had great pedicures where I left feeling relaxed and pampered, and I have also had horrible pedicures where they completely ignored my concerns and were overly rough and/or a shoddy paint job. Prices are good if you happen to get a good mani/pedicurist, and they have ample free parking, with convenient online scheduling. I will likely continue to come here just based on the convenience, and especially because they have the largest selection of Zoya environmentally/healthy nail polish that I've seen in this area. They also have a pretty robust customer points program which translates visits to points which eventually become discounts on future visits. Mixed bag for sure, but convenient and clean, so I'll be back. read more

I will not be back to Star Nails again. I have been a loyal customer for years now. I made an appointment last week for Thursday afternoon at 4:45 pm. I drove 40 mins to get there only to be told they didn't see me in the calendar. I politely explained when I booked and that I had driven far. I was told they could not accommodate me. I then said that was not good customer service and I would not be back. The receptionist said, "Ok, I'll take you and cancel someone else." I of course would not want to do that to someone. Booked a regular manicure with gel removal. The nail tech I had was very rushed and almost cut every one of my cuticles. I didn't understand why she seemed in such a hurry, I wasn't late. In fact I was early. Roughly buffed and filed, no care in the world. I paid before polishing as usual. I only wanted a coat of clear regular polish to give my nails a break. She took less than a minute to finish painting and sent me on my way. I sat down to dry my nails and looked and saw some of my nails still had gel polish in corners and bloody cuticles. At this point I was frustrated and disappointed with the service. I'm aware of the sign that says tips are appreciated but honestly, I didn't feel the tip was justified. I had a quick file and a sloppy clear coat applied. After a few minutes of drying, I proceed to leave. My nail tech actually stops me in my tracks and tells me that "what I paid did not include tip." I couldn't believe she was actually asking me to tip her so I had her repeat herself. "Tip??" Gave her a couple bucks and left. Overall I think this was highly unprofessional. I could understand if the service I had was more expensive, time consuming, and maybe performed better. But given the experience of 20 min that I just had, I couldn't justify it. This used to be my go-to for manicures & pedicures as it was clean, easy to make an appointment and my usual techs were great. But the last few months they are falling OFF. I got a gel removal and the man wasn't sure what to do so he used an electric file and filed my natural nails down to paper thin status. Here I am a month later with nails still breaking and splitting. If you do go DO NOT book an appointment for after 5pm. Otherwise the staff will actively sweep under your feet, turn off lights and essentially bolt out the door without any of the usual attention to detail, massage etc. I went back last week for a pedicure and same thing happened, I paid for a 10 min foot massage which they skipped because they were closing soon sp the woman got up, put her coat on and left after telling me to pay at the front. read more

*Let me start by saying this review is specific to their Middletown location. The Newport location is much better.* The interior is bright and fresh and everything seems very sterile and clean, but I have never left thinking "Wow, that was a great manicure!" Or pedicure, whatever I'm there for. I usually go to the Newport location and always leave happy. Friendly technicians, excellent attention to detail and amazing massages. But anytime I go to Middletown the technicians aren't nearly as good and I leave regretting having paid for the service. I'll use today's experience as an example: The technitian seemed distracted and really half assed a lot of the pedicure. Didn't greet me with a hello or say one word the entire time. Then when I checked out I got charged $3 extra for selecting a "special" polish. There was no sign indicating what I chose would be an extra charge nor did anyone tell me. When I reccomended a sign should be put up I was just told "oh I'll remind him to tell his clients moving forward." A lot of good that does me. I just moved into the area from California. I had on pink and white solar nails. I looked thru several yelp reviews and decided to give this place a shot.... I also loved the fact they had a rewards program and can book online. I was not happy with my services tho. It was very busy in there so maybe I just had bad luck, but I came in for artificial nails removal ($15) gel manicure and a reg pedicure (no polish). I selected the monthly special ($55), it was very enjoyable, but she never touched my cuticles on my toes. I have gel polish on it, but I was trying to explain and it didn't work out well. Language barrier is pretty tough here. Or at least for the three I spoke with (other than the receptionist). I know I'm not a nail tech, but I've been getting my nails done for a while and have seen things done several ways. The employees here didn't want to hear it. I asked for a bright orange color for French tips with dip powder. After getting halfway through, Runa said it wasn't the right thickness and started all over again.
