Rip off...extremely overpriced. My full set cost $85 and it was nothing special. However what really bothered me was the fact that I was forced to tip a full 20% ON TOP of the $85 service due to being told that the nail techs are commission based. That isn't how tipping works. If you get a tip you appreciate it and move on. For the record I did tip but then was yelled at by my nail tech. It was a horrible and extremely off putting experience. I've been coming to star nails for over 10 years and the service and quality of treatments here has become absolutely atrocious. Booked an appointment for a mani, needing gel removed first then dazzle dry would be applied. The man didn't fully remove the gel polish from my nails, then he left the tops of my nails all jagged and rough. He then started to push back my cuticles without using any type of softener first, resulting in pain and uneven cuticles, legit looked like a 2 year old was practicing cuticle shaping. Then out came the cuticle cutters. Accidents and little nicks happen when cutting cuticles I'm not unreasonable but He cut me deeper than I've ever been cut before and it still hurts really bad. He then started to apply the first polish I chose and after 2 nails looking like lumpy mashed potatoes I stopped him and he blamed the polish so I asked if I could choose a color that wasn't lumpy and he let me. Starts again, again the polish is lumpy and separating and bubbling, applied unevenly in thickness. I let him do his thing assuming the polish would level out. You can review the photos I'm attaching to see the work for yourself. At the cash register I said I'm sorry I never say anything but this is the worst mani I have ever had, it's downright unacceptable. At that time he started blaming me bc I "didn't say something earlier" I asked him if he had eyes bc he was the one doing the service and should never let a client leave like that. He then started accusing me of choosing the wrong colors, as if my color choice effected his technique. I asked him if it was my fault he had horrible polish and then he charged my card for the service and walked away. My daughter got married this past Friday so on Thursday, 6/27/19, the bridal party and the mother of the bride and groom arrived to Star nails for our scheduled appointments at your Middletown RI location. I had previously called to confirm appointments. Upon arrival to the salon on 6/2719 at 9:30 am, we were met by the receptionist in a very rude manner. My daughter, the bride to be, was so excited for this relaxing fun mani/ pedi with her friends and family. The receptionist was so unwelcoming and seemed annoyed by our presence. She threw the color books at us and wasn't willing to answer questions. She never even considered congratulating the bride. We were then summoned to our pedi chairs and didn't even sit together. We were hoping to have a relaxing time and we wanted to have a champagne toast and some bonding time but were rushed and spread out. We had questions about colors which no one answered. We overheard the receptionist say that she " hates large groups". My daughter was so upset that she wanted to leave. My pedicure was horrible as it only lasted 15 minutes. There was no scrubbing or massage of legs. The filing was awful and the color wasn't what I wanted. I was done and in the manicure chair 30 minutes before the rest of our group. We were again all spread out for the manicures and the bride was seated all alone. My younger daughter had to ask to please sit next to her. After completing my manicure, I went to pay for myself and my 2 daughter's and this seemed to bother them that I was paying for multiple people. I then told the receptionist that she needed to work on her people skills and that this whole experience was awful. She said she didn't think she was rude at all. She also was outside smoking at least twice while we were there. I paid 248 dollars plus tips for this unpleasant and unfortunate experience. My daughter was so upset on what was supposed to be a relaxing fun morning. Our wedding planner who recommended your establishment was shocked by this treatment and will not be recommending Star Nails in the future. Very professional and High quality materials for acrylics but the workers make you uncomfortable and look very impatient whenever you tell them something or ask them to do something like shape your nails during the manicure. I couldn't relax during the experience. I came back to get nails removed since I trusted they were professional and would do a good job but they completely scratched up my nails :( even filed them incorrectly so there's jagged edges. I asked for them shorter and rounded and she just made them super short she didn't ask how short. She (Sunny) just wanted to get through the appointment quickly. The pictures say enough. read more

Came here off recommendations as the best nail salon on the island, and because they have Dazzle Dry Polish, and was very disappointed. I got a manicure and pedicure. The pedicure was ok but it chipped in the first week when polish usually lasts until I take it off. The manicure was very disappointing and chipped on day 2, when the Dazzle Dry Polish always lasts at least a week. They didn't paint to the ends of my nails and it looked like I had grow out when I left the salon, and like I painted them myself. I'm sure options are limited on the island but I hope to find a place better than this. read more

Well... I will like to first start off by saying the receptionist Katie was very nice when I called to make an appointment and when I came in for it. Now the nail tech I had Ruma did mediocre service. I can't believe I paid $69 because I had a 10% off coupon for such service. I got a mani clear polish and a pedi with polish just something simple. I asked for my nails to be cut down square all the same size and that's not what I got. They were all different lengths and for my pedi it would've almost been great but there was polish all over my skin and I had to ask her to kindly clean it off. She was nice about it. So a few hours after I left one of the corner of my nails broke. No worries right... So I called the next day and once again Katie was very helpful with getting me an appointment to get it fixed. Now this is the main reason why I am actually doing this review. Another nail tech (don't know her name) proceeds to fix it and says very rudely (Your nails are going to break because that's what they do!" And I said "well not hours after I just got it done!" Instead of taking the clear polish off she shapes it up and that was it. I was so appalled because how dare u treat a paying customer that way. If I'm paying $70 freaking dollars for a mani and pedi I deserve to receive top tier customer service and satisfaction. read more

After going to the Newport Salon for the past 3 years, I figured that the service was standard across the organization. We recently moved to Middletown and the Middletown Salon is much closer! I made an appointment for today for a manicure and brow waxing. After waiting 15 minutes for my appointment, I actually felt like I was a second thought for the technician the entire time. When she brought me back for my waxing, I feel that she rushed through the process. And then with my manicure, I have always looked forward too and enjoyed the massages (back and hand) but today, quite frankly it was horrible!!! She kept circulating on my top spinal bone (which is now extremely sore) and as for the hand massage.....I'm still waiting for it!! She was too busy listening to everything else that was going on in the Salon and I was completely an after thought. I'm willing to go the extra two miles to the Newport salon and get the proper treatment that is the norm of the quality of Star Nails than suffer through what I went through today! read more

Star Nails has been my go-to since 2010. After five years of coming to Star Nails and receiving awesome, friendly service, I'm sad to say that the one experience I'm about to describe has caused me to find another nail shop when I'm in town. So Easter is probably an odd day to head to the nail salon, but seeing as I was in town for a five week class and had nothing better to do I decided to head in. I had just been in the salon two weeks earlier for a fill; a new friend had been so impressed with my nails after that visit that she wanted to tag along to get hers done, too. Unfortunately for us, they had the B Team working on Easter. We did pedis, waxing, and nails - I got a set of the UV gels that are one of the worst looking sets of nails I've ever had. Hers weren't much better. A bit of an embarrassment considering how much I talked the salon up .. and how much our bills were when we left. My friend was pretty unimpressed with the entire experience and attempted to tip to that standard; the gal who did her nails was pretty aggressive about calling her out on it. I tipped my usual only because it was the holiday and my conscious demanded it but hell, if you give poor service .. expect poor gratuity. After all, a gratuity is not an entitlement, but an indication of my happiness (or lack) with your service. Even worse was the 'tude - over the years I usually see the same ladies and gents working the salon .. always impeccably friendly and polite. Not that day. Unsure if they were frustrated about working on the holiday, or just woke up on the wrong side of the bed, but wow. All things change, right? I guess a good thing can't stay a good thing forever. The person doing my nails clipped my cuticles too fast and made 4 of my fingers bleed and it was very painful. The only reason I am even giving two stars is because the actual pedicure itself was great. If it was for customer service alone, it would be a one star review. I called over a week ago to try and make a last minute appointment for a few people. Understanding it was last minute and more than just 1 person, I'd understand if they were unable to take us. What I couldn't understand was the rude answer I received. But seeing as my sister, visiting from California, wanted to give it another shot this week I called again to make an appointment. Three of us getting pedicures... Two of us got to sit together and the other ended up on the other side. I understand being busy but she didn't even receive the option to wait to be able to sit side by side. Then the guy doing the pedicure couldn't understand anything he was asked. Okay, English isn't their first language, I get that. But instead of staring at us, he should have asked someone to come over so they would understand. And when we brought both of these things up to the woman working the desk, we received so much attitude and the most condescending and arrogant response. I couldn't believe this woman was pretty much the face of the salon, being the one you talk to when you first walk in and when you leave. I'm extremely disappointed by this experience, because I've alway received great manicures/pedicures here. But the customer service received from the woman is enough to keep me away. read more

I usually love the pampering you get at this salon. My daughter and I went for mani/pedis on July 5th and right away I was nervous that Tony was not going to soak my gel polish off. He obliged me by putting the remover on my nails after I asked him to do so. After my pedicure, my manicure began and he proceeded to buff my natural nails to remove residual gel polish with a tool meant for acrylic nails. My already thin nails hurt and a few days later 4 of my nails had split painfully low on my nail bed due to the weakness of my nails from unnecessary buffing. I walked in with healthy natural nails and left with thin weak damaged nails. I will NOT be returning to this salon. read more

Went here this past week and it was overall a great experience! The place was quiet and relaxing with calming music, and my pedicure and gel manicure turned out great! One thing I really liked about this place was how they set timers for things like massages--that way you know they are really giving consistent service. The place was also extremely sanitary and clean, which made me feel more comfortable. They also use a ton of great products like skin scrubs and hot waxes that made my skin feel fantastic! I had Andy as my nail technician, and he did a really good job. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because the whole process seemed a little rushed. I spent $60 to get a manicure and gel pedicure, both of which were done separately in about an hour, which is much quicker than most salons I have been to (many could argue this as a pro I guess!). On my day off, I had hoped for my spa experience to last a little longer, so perhaps next time I will spring for an upgraded pedicure so I can spend more time relaxing in the massage chair! I've been to Star Nails a few times for gel manicures and haven't had a bad experience, but also nothing I would rave about. I came here for the first time in awhile last Saturday for a gel manicure, only to have 2 of my nails chip the next day and a few of them visibly cracking/peeling, which if you've had a gel manicure before you know this is not normal or acceptable. I went back to the nail salon a few days later for an appointment to get them fixed. When I went back, rather than removing the gel nail polish from the fingers that were chipped and repainting them, they lazily applied more thick gel on top of these fingers. I was not in the mood to stay and ask for them to do it again, so I dealt with the bad looking manicure. Not even 2 hours after I left the nail salon for the SECOND time in the same week, the same nails chipped again, and now several of my other nails are chipping as well. Its been barely ONE week with this gel manicure and it looks like I've had it on for months. I will NOT be returning to star nails. read more

This place is great! With all the mixed reviews I was a little nervous. They have bags covering the pedicure tubs as well as the little oven that sterilizes the tools which made me feel very comfortable. My technician didn't go crazy on my cuticles or trimming and she gave a great foot/leg AND an unexpected shoulder massage!! I also appreciated how they used timers to time the massages so I felt like I was assured to get the right amount of time. I was pleased with the amount of service for the price. I'll definitely come back! The only 2 drawbacks were that you have to pay cash tip (although they do have an atm in the salon) and my friend's technician was super unfriendly, but she still did a good paint job and massage. read more

Felt like the Ladies used 2-3 strips of wax then just plucked eeeeevvvvverything else. They also failed to remove any...ANY hair from my chin minus one tiny strip under the lip. I have been to this salon many times, seeing different technicians. I have always been happy, the salon is clean, the implements always sterilized for each client. On this visit, my mother & I arrived 15 min early. A technician told us choose our colors. As we were looking, he came to us twice, rushing us to choose. The pedicure was fine but rushed. During the manicure, I felt "Andy" could have applied another coat. I said nothing. I was polite and thanked him after each service. At check out, I told him I wanted to use some rewards points I had earned in the past. (I also included that request when I made my online appointment.) He said I didn't have reward points. When I insisted I did, he yelled at me. I paid the full price and tipped him even though he was rude. I didnt want to cause a scene. I will not accept him as my technician in the future. Star Nails is one of the better (affordable) nail salons in the area. It's always clean and I've never had a long wait for a manicure or pedicure even when it's really busy. They have waxing and massages but I've only ever had the manicure and pedicure. Not all of the staff speak English but they are always pleasant and polite and will gladly call over another employee to help translate. Pricing is not great but still decent and I feel you get better service here than at other nail places. They give you a short neck massage during a manicure and another short massage while your nails are drying. They have massaging pedicure chairs and the baths always seem clean. The extra leg massage for an additional fee doesn't seem worth it. They use OPI and Essie nail polishes but they don't seem to have the latest and greatest colors available. Maybe it's because of the clientele but they don't have many of the wild and crazy colors that are fun to try on a whim without having to buy a whole bottle. read more

Star Nails in both Middletown and Newport is clean and the technicians are capable but insolent and robotic and the customer service couldn't be more unpleasant, inept and uncaring. It's kind of shocking since it is a very simple thing to fix. I have made this complaint before multiple times - and I certainly would be a much more generous tipper if I had a more pleasant experience. I have had no feedback at all, nor an acknowledgement. While they are a little steep in pricing compared to the other salons, it certainly is worth the extra few dollars. The manicures and pedicures are long lasting, and meticulously done. The energy is vibrant and bright, and it is always very busy. My favorite part is the 2 min back heated towel back massage that they give you as your nails are drying.... it is the best! Another thing that is unique is all of the pedicure add-ons... they are reasonably priced and give you a lot more than just the typical pedicure! It gives you a very spa-like experience. I just went in for a pedicure, with a gift card for $30. I decided to upgrade to the spa pedicure, which added a hot stone massage and a few extra perks for $15 extra. I absolutely loved it. At first I was a bit worried because this is more than I have ever paid for a pedicure, but it really was worth it. They do so much for your legs and your feet - it's fantastic! After letting my hands soak in acetone for an hour and a half while waiting for the girl to be done doing another customers nail, she took the electric file and filed off my nails. I kept telling her it hurt and it was hot and she just said oh it's almost done. Looked at my nails when it was done and saw she actually took a lot of my real nails off to the point where I have little holes and cuts opening to the underbed nail. This place was awesome. I needed a fill and a pedi and my place was closed, as it was Sunday. So I bee-bop on over to Star, which I had seen before and they took me right in. They did my pedi first and it was great. I'm super ticklish and he didn't dwell on my tickle parts. Then I was lead over for my fill. Boy was that different! This guy took his TIME! (In a good way.) Very meticulous. What was so different though was that they don't use typical acrylic fill. He painted on a liquid the dusted it with a scentless powder, sprayed a little something and there it was! After the normal file, buff, and oil I paid! and was polished. The only reason it lost a star was b/c of the price. My fill and a french polish was $30 and my pedi was $30. This was my first time coming to get my nails done at his salon. I did like the friendly people, clean salon , and the selection of nail polish . The girl that did my nails took her time and was neat. One thing that I didn't really like was it was a little pricer than other nail salons in the area. My gel fill cost $50, it was a five dollar charge to fix a broken nail which I had no problem with. But usually I pay $10 less for a fill. It's been 3 days since I have gotten my fill and two of the nails have been bubbling. One of the nails the gel polish is lifting which I have never experienced before. Very happy every time I go. Moderately priced. Excellent mani, pedi, shellac, removal, and massage. I always pay the $5 for the callous remover. Every manicure comes with a Paraffin Wax treatment which is essential as a part of RI winter care. They will offer but do not push their extra services. This is the first time I have ever had a neck massage included in my manicure, which was wonderful and definitely makes me want to click the "Yay! I'm a fan" 4-star. Really enjoyed those 3 minutes with the warm towel, which made up for the fact that my manicure otherwise was a bit rushed and I was sad there was no cuticle soak. I was part of a larger group of 7 girls and we had to wait for about 20 minutes after our original reservation time for our appointments to start, which may explain why they went a bit quick. Note: there's 2 Star Nails and Spa locations in the area, this one in a strip mall in Middletown and another one in Newport itself. Their Yelp pages have identical photos, although when I saw the ones on this page of the row of pedicure chairs I was surprised because it did not look nearly that nice in the location we were in. I really liked this place the only bad thing really is the parking is super crowded. There are way too many businesses for the amount of spaces in the lot. It's best to try and go in the middle of the day not during lunch or dinner. I only get pedicures during the summer but I still like having my nails buffed and polished during the winter. Went one week ago to the day to get a gel polish manicure and a pedicure. Everything went great it was fantastic I left super satisfied. About 4 days later I noticed a nail lifting towards the base of the polish. The next day another one was lifting and was catching EVERYTHING, my hair, clothes.... everything. By one week exactly 7 nails were lifting at the base. So I FINALLY had some free time to run in real quick and let them know I wasn't satisfied with the fact that 7 days after getting gel polish they were already lifting. I paid good money for it I expect quality. I am not rough on my nails at all either. At all. So I went in and explained my issue and she said ok and asked me to wait so I did, and after waiting a bit they called me back to a chair and she told me she was going to file them down on the base near the cuticle and then re-seal them with the top coat. I told her I didn't have time for that right now, I didn't come in with the intention of getting them fixed, I already gave them that chance. I explained things had been getting stuck under the gel polish and my real nail. She was very adamant about simply filing down the polish and re sealing it. I told her no that it wasn't going to fix the problem as it would still be lifting inside AND how UNSANITARY that is as you could clearly see pieces of who knows what stuck under. She immediately stopped talking when I said the word unsanitary and asked me to come back up front where she tried writing a gift certificate. I told her that it wouldn't be necessary I won't be coming back. I wanted to let them know the poor work that was done. She was insistent on writing out the gift certificate..... for $10. $10 is gonna get me far. I tipped me technician $30 when I got my services done..... but $10 is gonna make this better? at this point I should have just asked for a refund but I didn't think of that till later. I didn't go into the salon with the intention of causing a scene or having a full conversation/argument with anyone. I wanted to simply let them know they had poor work and I wouldn't be coming back and suggesting for others to not come here. Instead I was met with an extremely unsanitary solution that she was adamant about doing that wouldnt even truly fix the issue. I didn't have time to sit and do another set of gel polish. I already did that a week ago. I shouldn't have to come back 7 days later. Start Nails has always been my go to place. Convenient, clean, and I always receive a great manicure or pedicure. Please be aware, while there is often an English speaking manager on site, for most of the staff, English is a second language. So if you are the type of person that feels the need to manage or direct your technician, this is not the place for you. Most of the staff speak enough English to communicate, and they are all well trained and capable. Reading some of the other reviews about the customer service, I felt this was worth mentioning. I almost never make an appointment, and they do their best to accomodate, occasionally I have to wait a short time. In terms of pricing, I feel it's fair, and a good value. Try one of the spas at our local hotels if you want to compare pricing! read more
