The brother of an elderly friend did business here and had recently died. She had been in contact with someone on which documents she needed to take to the branch to secure her money as beneficiary. As she lives in Central Valley, we drove about two hours and found the office, even though Apple Maps put us a block away. (Did they learn that from Google?) Once we found the building, we followed the signs and talked to the manager first. She sent us to Issac, who was patient and accommodating. Being that there was a death involved, there were some details that seemed to be used occasionally, not daily. He sought help quickly and quietly. The process was smooth. Star one is worth 8 gazillion dollars and they have an app that was made by some 90 year old boomer that you need a treasure map to navigate. Do you want to pay a bill? Take 80 steps away from the tree with 4 limbs and make a right. That's how you navigate the website once you're logged in. Infuriating tbh. I decided not to leave a review last year cause we did indeed get our dream home with a good rate even though the entire process was lack with transparency and communication. However, I guess this is the final straw. Lol the Star One site is hard to operate and caused us unnecessary stress when we are simply just trying to set up our monthly loan payment. It was suppose to transfer the fund automatically but it shows "unable to transfer due to insufficient fund" even though we do indeed have enough cash in the account!!!! Best bank I've ever had, sort of. Excellent car loan rates, excellent interest rates on savings accounts compared to any other savings union or bank in the San Francisco Bay area. They also are part of the COOP ATM network meaning that you can withdraw money from almost every other credit union ATM as well as 7-11 ATM's without any fee. The only issue I had was with their mortgage department being totally overwhelmed back in 2022. I eventually had to go with a mortgage broker who promised to match Star One's excellent rate, and after some brow-beating did so, in order to pay for the house before the end of the 30 day escrow period. They also had some chaos around a tech refresh for their web site and app but eventually fixed it. They aren't perfect, but they're better than any other bank or credit union in the SF Bay area. I eventually closed my account only because I moved away and there were some things where I needed a local credit union and the COOP shared branch banking in my new city didn't work out well when I needed access to my money for a large purchase. read more

We recently closed on our first home, and used Star One as our lender because of their great rate and rate modification program. We worked with Mital and Dorota on our loan. Mital was our main point of contact, and she was a godsend who made the entire process a lot smoother and less stressful than we had expected going in. She stayed on top of everything, proactively communicating and following up with parties to make sure everything was on track. She also meticulously explained each step of the process, making sure we understood every detail and answering our many, many questions. What we appreciated the most was her friendly demeanor and (seemingly!) endless patience, which brought a level of calmness and order to an otherwise crazy process! The only piece of feedback we have is the final loan documents were not sent to the title company until 2 days before closing (perhaps because Dorota was on vacation the week before), which meant that we did not have time to review them until the signing appointment that night. Given the number of documents we had to sign (hundreds of pages), it would have been much preferred if we were given the time to more thoroughly review ahead of time. Overall, we are quite happy with our choice of Star One as our lender, and would recommend considering them for a home loan (and ask for Mital if you do!). read more

Very bad communication, loan officers are not responsive when contacted online or by phone!!!

I finally couldn't take it anymore and moved most my money elsewhere. Seems the quality has gone downhill and the people don't even know the rules in banking. It takes a lifetime to get a loyal customer but less than a day to lose one. I recently deposited a check and found out it was reversed for an erroneous reason. I never even received any notification the deposit was reversed. I found out only by logging in and reviewing my account. The reason they reversed the deposit was invalid saying the number on the back of the check did not match the check number in the front. It was me who educated them they are not supposed to match. Many institutions use blank stock when printing checks off in sheets. the number on the back of the check is the stock number of the sheets used and does not represent the check number on the front of the check. I have even previously deposited checks from this business over the last five years with no problem. I believe this could have been an honest error but no one from the credit union would own up to it. Why was I educating them in banking rules and practices? I was just requested to redeposit the check which then it successfully cleared. I sent an email requesting an explanation in but I never received a response. Thus, this had me questioning the overall business practices of the credit union. it's not representative of the quality from when I signed up decades ago. Therefore I moved a huge amount away from the credit union. read more

Jul 22, 2024 They finally replied back a week later when I requested a loan. In that time, I thought they gave up on me so I applied at another bank. That bank got back to me within 15 mins and I was in the process of going through the other's bank loan until Star One decided to call me back. The loan officer countered my loan with a lower amount and higher interest rate. I asked the representative what kind of joke was that? She came up with all the excuses in the world why I was given that bad offer while the other bank approved me right away. We recently went with Star One for our home loan and worked with Mital and Dorota. This was our first home purchase so there were a lot of ups and downs throughout the process. Mital was our main point of contact throughout the process. She was the most friendly person that I have worked with and I enjoyed speaking with her on the phone. She was very patient and helped answer any questions that I had. However, I found it a bit challenging to contact her at times as often she would be on the phone with other clients. We would often have to send an email asking for her to call us back. Dorota was our underwriter and we found it very challenging to get in touch with her. She was working on a lot of loans for the end of the month so it might have just been a busy time of the year, but often times we would call her multiple times and would be sent to voice mail. One of the more challenging parts throughout the process was providing documents and uploading them to the portal. Often times, there would be documents that Dorota would need and we would have to upload them to the portal that day. We would be at work when they requested the documents, so a few days we would have to get off early and go home to find and upload the documents. It would have been helpful if we were informed more clearly about what documents would be needed when. One of the more challenging parts of the process was a few days before closing we received our closing disclosure and it had inaccurate information on it and we were not informed about it before it was sent out to the title company. Our agent gave us 1% credit back and that 1% was more than our closing costs. The amount shown on the closing disclosure would have wasted about half of the credit that our agent gave. So a day before closing we had to work with Dorota to come up with a way to use more of the credit. The 1% credit had been known from the beginning so it was a bit stressful a day before closing trying to find a way to take full advantage of it. Overall, we had a decent experience working with Star One. We were able to get a good rate and close exactly on our closing date. read more

This review is for the call center representative. My family member and I used to have individual accounts with Star One, and both of us recently closed the accounts. On the email of closing account request, we both clearly stated that we want the final check to be mailed to the mailing address which is a po box. A few days later, my family member received the check at her residential address (during the whole time she had account with Star One, all statements and documents went to the po box, the residential address is the address shown on her Driver License), therefore she reminds me to check with Star One about where the check was mailed to because she knew I moved to a different address from the time I opened the account. Well, guess what. When I called Star One, they refused to verify the address. The representative "Deeana" states that the check should be mailed to the mailing address on file which is absolutely not the case my family member had! read more

Throughout the entire home buying process, they were incredibly easy to work with, attentive, patient, and responsive. My wife and I had talked to several other lenders prior to choosing Star One and it was a no brainer. Star One had the best rate and fees, but what made the decision that much easier was knowing that we were in good hands. Their online banking is ridiculous. It's horribly slow, glitched, times out and it's not very user friendly. I mean, they are not fixing the problems that have been there for months and months. If you call, they're like, "Huh? Wha? Uhhh...no, no...it's fine." Worked with Jason Udarbe and Gosia Sory's. Extremely poor communication and follow-up. Although both work for the same bank, Gosia can receive email attachments for supporting docs requested, yet Jason cannot. Jason suggested that I send my loan docs with PII directly to his personal email. When I questioned him why it is that Gosia can receive my email attachments, and suggested that I send my docs to Gosia to upload to their portal, he gave me attitude and acted like I was an idiot for suggesting that I send my docs to her for uploading. Wouldn't recommend this bank. Poor customer service and questionable practices. read more

I have been a Star One customer for many years, but I have decided to pull the plug. * Poor phone customer service; in-person customer service is generally good, but who has the time to visit a local branch for every request? * Their website and phone app suck - they don't work half the time, they are often glitchy, and even simple tasks take a lot of time * Being a long time member carrying a large bank balance doesn't mean anything - the CS people will still give you the attitude, and they will slow walk on the mortgage process, or any other process for that matter; there is an unusual amount of time and paperwork involved with everything * Their mortgage process was unnecessarily complicated - they had so many rules, which I wasn't aware of until I was deep into the process; I finally withdrew my application and went elsewhere * Their savings rate used to be competitive, but not anymore * Credit card benefits are among the worst; they don't allow linking an external bank account for automatic monthly payments; one CS person told me it's doable, but I haven't been able to figure it out after spending some time on it. This is trivial on other credit card websites So there is zero benefit to staying with Star One anymore, so I am closing all my accounts including my credit card. read more

On 4/15 at 4:10 my Mother In Law who speaks Spanish but understands English was being referred to by me (a current member) to open an account. Kim Nguyen was going to help us but once we mentioned Spanish speaking her tone was off "She needs to understand English in order to bank here" and she kept suggesting us to go online and talk to a virtual assistance. Even though we entered the premise at a reasonable tie. We asked if she can help with making an appt. but she said they were about to close. The funny thing is we left the bank at 4:40pm and that is sufficient time to assist with appointment for a different time. We were very discouraged and disappointed as this is my main Bank and everyone at this Credit Union has been nothing but AMAZING. It could have been an off day for her. We will try again to open an account just be wary when translating for a non-native English speaker with opening an account. Absolutely terrifying experience - DO NOT COME HERE FOR LOAN PRODUCTS!! 1) I applied for an auto loan with my registration. After providing my registration showing my car is in NY they pre-approved me, ran my credit, and then said they don't provide loans to NY registered cars. What?! 2) I applied for a mortgage after numerous calls stating I am only looking at multi-family properties. After applying and running my credit the loan officer said they don't have loan products for multi-families. What?! 3) 2 weeks later I got ANOTHER hard inquiry out of the blue from Star One Auto, running my credit score without my authorization. What?!! These inquiries made my credit score decrease without getting the loan due to the lendors lack of experience about their own products. Then running my credit score again with notifying me is illegal. Their rates are good but come here for the basic stuff. Do not come here if you are looking for something other than a single family home or a California registered car. I am shutting down my membership with them. read more

Interest rates and service are exceptional. It's easy to make an appointment for assistance with financial documents, money transfers, and notary services. They aren't going to ask you to sign up for a super-saver deal with hidden penalties because these trick plans don't even exist. The amount of money you save here compared to a "big bank" can be hundreds or even thousands of dollars a year. Update to previous review: No recent problems with online banking. Review regarding mortgage loans: We were recommended to refinance through Star One from one of our friends. Though I would probably refinance through Star One over again even with everything I know now, their process and systems are a huge headache. They also require you to have a Star one checking or savings account with them before you can take out a loan. Let's start with the positives: - We were able to get an exceptional rate at 2.85%. I couldn't find another place that would've offered a lower rate. - They pay for all of the closing costs for all 10 year mortgage rates Now onto the deltas: - The entire process took three months even though we were providing all documents and scheduling appointments immediately. Their process is extremely lengthy and turnaround time is long. - The site to pay your mortgage payments is not user friendly. They show you your loan information through your Star One account, but you need to pay your mortgage payments off through another site. They don't have clean statements showing exactly how much principal and interest you're paying per month. - You can't make principal only payments online. Process: 1. Fill out an application for a loan and wait for them to get back to you (few days) 2. If you do not have a Star One checking or savings account, you have to create one. We applied online and ended up having to go in person because our driver's license didn't reflect our correct address. It took them approximately a week and a half to set up our savings account after going in person 3. They reviewed all of our documents to obtain our pre-approval (1 week) 4. They sent someone out to complete an appraisal on our property (3 weeks for Star One to obtain the report) 5. Since we were refinancing a condo, they required us to have our HOA fill out a questionnaire. The vendor took 3 weeks to get the document to us. 6. They submitted our paperwork to underwriting to get the final approval and this took another 3 weeks. Overall, we got what we needed done. However, it wasn't a breeze either. If you're able to get a great rate, the process may be worth it. However, if you really care about a user friendly UI and a seamless experience, I would look elsewhere. Going through their site and speaking to the workers, I feel like Star One isn't as established as I would have preferred. read more

I love my hard earned cash and rather than keeping in a corporate bank that charges you for even looking at it, I keep it safe with a nonprofit credit union. In addition, credit unions are not-for-profit organizations that exist to serve their members rather than to maximize corporate profits. Since they are member-owned institutions, credit unions focus on providing a safe place to save and borrow at reasonable rates. Unlike banks, credit unions return surplus income to their members in the form of dividends. Love those monthly dividends! StarOne credit union has been serving me for over a decade and I wouldn't have it any other way. The service is always professional and friendly with smiles awaiting me. I like coming here for many reasons: location, cleanliness and the extensive service they provide. This location will even fabricate a replacement debit card for you while you wait. Also, money-orders or cashiers-checks are free to members if they are over $200. They also have a coin machine to change over your coins into some green currency, free of charge for members of course, where most places charge around 8% for the service. One would think that credit unions don't offer high technology services, but StarOne has an amazing iPhone app to service your accounts, including check deposits using your phone camera. The absolute worst. Bait you with a 2.99% rate and then make you pay for your own credit report. Then they assign you a loan officer and they never respond. Could barely get me a loan estimate. Very slow and archaic. Tons of fees/points on their mortgages. Make sure you look at the APR. Escalated concern to "management" and they told me to go to a general "contact us" form. Sigh. Their online security is lacking and they outsource many of their key functions to third parties that are just not to par. Web browsing experience is very confusing.
