Every year, I eagerly pay my vehicle registration fees to the State of California, dreaming of that shiny new sticker that says, "Congratulations, you may continue participating in society." Then the DMV does what the DMV does best. They hold my sticker hostage until I pay the annual "Ransom Tax"...also known as the California Smog Check. With registration deadline anxiety setting in and visions of bureaucratic doom dancing through my head, I found myself at Star Smog Depot in Colma, CA (where the dead outnumber the living...Michael Jackson would be THRILLED!!!) armed with a coupon from their website and a healthy amount of skepticism. To my surprise, these folks operate with the efficiency of a NASCAR pit crew. I barely had enough time to settle into my waiting routine, mentally calculate how many government agencies had a claim on my wallet, and scroll through a few memes before they were already wrapping things up. Less than 30 minutes. That's not a smog check. That's a magic trick. The staff was friendly, professional, and incredibly thorough. They explained the process, handled everything efficiently, and had me back on the road before I could fully commit to being annoyed about the entire smog-check experience. The best part? The coupon helped soften the financial sting of California's annual "prove your car isn't trying to destroy the atmosphere" ritual. Some businesses make you feel like you're trapped in an endless line at the DMV. Star Smog Depot is the exact opposite. Fast, organized, and surprisingly pleasant. If you're staring at your registration notice and realizing the state has once again placed your sticker behind a smog-check paywall, do yourself a favor and head here. You'll be in, out, and back on the road before your parking meter starts judging your life choices. Five stars for turning one of my least favorite annual errands into one of the easiest. Located on the corner of El Camino & B St. Again, quick and easy smog test. Dropped off 8.30am and picked up at 9 am. Usually about 20 mins wait time. Mention the coupon on their site for $50 cash payment. A convenience charge of $1.75 extra for credit card payments. Restrooms are available inside. The waiting room, can be overcrowded at times. It would be nice to have the windows opened or have outside seating available. However, this is still my go to for reasonably priced smog tests.

Extremely efficient operation. This place is popular because you'll likely get mail coupons directly or from those value pak coupon envelopes. Overall it's a reasonably priced joint (with coupon) especially they would give you a free test within 30 days if you fail the test the first time. This is a test only location and although you might need to wait a bit, you would most likely how quickly they get to your car. The people there are always young and once again extremely efficient. Takes away all the stress of doing one extra thing when you renew your vehicle. There is a surcharge for using credit cards but it's not too much. The restroom is clean and big and there is a TV in the waiting room but most people are on their phones anyways.

This place is definitely the way to go. Took my Toyota Sienna today and was about in and out in less than 5 minutes. The staff are friendly and professional. Brought my 1990 Volvo 740, which failed due to me leaving one of the evap hoses during a repair. Shop owner allowed me to return with the car later for a free retest. Usually shops don't do free re-tests for star-smog cars, so this was very kind of them and a HUGE help for me. Thanks again. read more

Should've knew to check Yelp first for any deal they had. My boyfriend highly recommended this place, so I didn't think I had to research anywhere else to get smog done. Parked our car and was greeted right away, automatically quoted us $98 for smog. I'm like wait a min, $98 for a smog?? I've never heard of such a high price. My boyfriend then mentioned he had only paid around $50 last time he was there, the guy said he'll honor that price but next time he'll need a coupon. They were fast at checking our car, in and out within 10 mins but 3 stars for an expensive price.... The least they could do was ask if we had a coupon or check in thru Yelp for the coupon.... read more

In and out time was fast. Process was great. I am impressed. I docked 2 stars because I saw the technician drop my hood from the highest height and made a loud slam, much louder than usual. Please don't do that to people's cars. Lower it before dropping it. read more

Conveniently located on El Camino Real in Colma, and easy to pull up to. This is my go to spot to smog check at a star station, and love they they offer a really great coupon deal that makes it affordable (make sure you show your coupon before they start the work, which they state on their website and advertised spaces). The workers there are nice, approach you at your vehicle and are relatively quick even when they are busy. Highly recommend for your smog checking needs. read more

I needed to get a smog test in order to sell my car. This place had an online deal where you get the test for 50$ and I heard good things about it so I stopped by. The service was quick and the team was nice. I ended up passing the test and it only took me about 10-15 minutes. I'll likely be back when I need to register my new car. Thanks Star Smog! read more

Super easy and quick service!!! When you pull into the lot park into a guest parking space, from there someone will approach to gather your information. From there they take your car and run the test. The whole process was maybe 20 minutes and they have a comfortable waiting area with a bathroom. I came in around 230 PM on Saturday and was in and out! Be sure to use the coupon listed if not the smog test is roughly $100. Additionally bring cash if possible - there is a $1.50 charge for card. read more

Second time coming here with the same vehicle for my DMV Renewal Smog Check and still impressed with the service. They quoted me 15-20 min but they pulled my car right into the garage after I parked and was literally done in 8 min after I was filling out my information on the form. Didn't get to enjoy the oil scent diffuser long enough that they have in the waiting room, smelled really good, it's definitely a vibe. Definitely recommend this place. read more

They usually open at 8am, but they were up and ready by 7:40am and they got my car finished by 7:53 am. Very friendly and great service. Fast and efficient and very cost effective. They allowed me to use a coupon that lowered the cost to 41$ before taxes. First time having to get a smog in a long time and it went very smoothly. Best time to go is early AM during the week if possible. No lines, no crowd and in n out in a heartbeat. I would highly recommend anyone to get a smog to come here. 5 star service!!!! read more

My husband and I came here earlier today for a smog check. They are quick and efficient. There are no hidden fees, but they do let you know that there's a $1.50 service fee charge for using card. If your car passes smog, then they also give you a certificate. Walk-ins are welcome and they have a designated area for you to park. It's a small shop, but they get the smog check done within 10-15 minutes. I highly recommend this place for smog check! :) read more

2025 update. It seems like everyone and their relatives come to Star Smog Depot. It took 30 minutes to do my smog check today at 11am. It was $48 + $1.50 for credit card. The staff here are cool. * Efficient * Clean * Polite customer service I thought all the young gentlemen co-owned the location because I would drive by and watch them work so efficiently and effectively together when passing on El Camino. Turns out they are all technicians that genuinely enjoy working with one another! The waiting room is neat & tidy. They even have an aroma therapy dispenser that spritzes every few minutes to counter the smell of the shop. I highly recommend this place. I brought in a coupon mailer but all you need to do is mention their Yelp coupon and you should be good! Nathan helped me both times but I found all the gentlemen working had a similar approach to customer service. read more

Don't come here they gave me a run around. I came here 4x to get my car smog all 4 didn't pass. Every time they tell me fix this and that so I do when I come back they find something new to fix. The last draw for me after the 3rd time I went back all they said everything looks good just drive about 150-200 and go to o'Reilly have them do the OBD scanner to make it green so it will show ready to go . So I drove it 300 miles just incase and went to O'Reilly got it to show green took it back to get it smog now they telling me it's my sensor ‍ are freakin kidding me you guys didn't tell me all that so I can just do 1 trip ! So I wasted $200 at this place and still my car won't pass smog ! I took it to another smog place and passes without any issues ! And the kids that works at this place are RUDE ! He suggested that I check back in 2-3 weeks, or possibly even 4 weeks, in hopes that they would be certified by then. Wow the technician here is MEAN! I called to make an appointment and I told them specifically that I had a groupon. A week later I arrive 15 minutes before and I hand my dmv paperwork to the the tech. I reminded him about the groupon and right when I bring out my phone he yells at me and I'm in shock! First he tells me that I need to learn how to read and that it needs to be printed. No where does it say that and he also said if he knew it was a groupon he wouldn't have taken the appointment. I asked who the person was that answered the phone and it was the owner (nice guy by the way) and that the owner doesn't do anything its him that does all the work. Ummm ok it looks like you have your own problems with your boss, but please don't put that out on me. He literally yelled at me in front of a few other customers and finally said "NO I'm not taking your car go somewhere else I'm not arguing with you I'm too busy!". Funny thing is I didn't even say anything the whole time he was the one screaming at me. I was so in shock I wanted to say something, but I did not want to cause a scene and so I grabbed my keys and left. I'm all for businesses that do well and it seems like this place gets pretty busy, but you really should not treat customers that way. Headline: Extremely Poor Customer Service, No Communication, and Unnecessary Escalation I brought my vehicle in for a smog check today, and for the first time ever, it failed. The reason given was related to something called a "drive cycle," a term I had never heard before. When I tried to ask for clarification, the experience was appalling. The employees simply repeated, "Needs to be driven 100 miles to complete the drive cycle," over and over again without offering any useful explanation or context. They became visibly impatient and angry at me for daring to ask questions about the service I was paying for. Feeling confused, overwhelmed, and frustrated, I asked to speak to the owner or a manager, hoping someone could provide a simple explanation. Instead of de-escalating the situation, they declined to speak with me and called the police. I left the business in tears. This was an absolutely shocking and unacceptable way to treat a customer who was simply asking for basic information. If you value clear communication, helpful staff, and professionalism, avoid this establishment. They are quick to take your money but completely fail at customer service. read more

Showed up slightly after 5pm since they were the only smog shop open near me and had the best deal with the coupon. What was also nice is that it's a free retest while my old place failed me last year because I had just got a new battery and refused to do a free retest (2007 Lexus). This place is lightning fast, I was in and out of there in about 20 minutes. Everyone was really courteous, they had an inside sitting area and a very clean bathroom. Definitely found our new spot and I'll keep recommending them to family and friends as long as they keep up the good work! read more

I would recommend this location to everyone. Make sure to look for their online coupon! One last thing, bring your coat. I went there for a smog check, My Inspector was Koru (wears glasses and a baseball cap), to place my car from the parking lot to the garage inspection stall, he put my car in Reverse (R) and quickly press the gas pedal and without a complete stop he changed the gear to Drive (D) this can damage the transmission. read more
