Absolutely disgusting customer service. I walked in with my two young children to use the coin machine, and this witch immediately started yelling that it was "for customers only." I told her I was a customer, but she kept screaming, asked, "Where are your clothes?!" and then continued yelling and using profanity in front of my children. As an African American mother, I left feeling singled out and humiliated. No one should be treated this way. This isn't the Jim Crow era. This place needs a lot of maintenance. Every time I go there are more and more "out of order" signs, and the last two times I went the machines I was using broke while I was using them. There is also something wrong with the dryers that leaves my clothes and linens smelling like chemicals and gasoline. I have seen the wash and fold ladies washing loads of rags etc which could lead to this, but at this point I have had to throw away multiple nice towels and sheets because the horrible smell won't come out of the fabric even after rewatching. There are so many other laundromats in the area I would suggest going to that leave your clothes feeling and smelling clean it is worth walking the additional block. read more

My favorite laundromat. Iconic SF interior, with the notorious Olga, who deals with everything and everyone the same way. SHE IS THE QUEEN! Her rules are simple, so if you don't like the way she manages the laundromat, go elsewhere. Yes, I've had my "Olga" moments, but I can respect her rules, since there are so many weird folks in this hood. The reason for my review today? 50% of the normal load front loading washers are out of order. 4 dryers out of order. That's a big problem for anyone who intentionally drives to this place, only to find no available machines. There are so few places like this left in the neighborhood...it would be great if the owner took care of the maintenance! read more

This place is rad. I have walked by for years but it was never close enough to my apartment situation. However, as laundromats in this city are shuttered one by one, I have found myself walking further and further. One recent afternoon I was heading over to Star Wash with a bag of wet laundry freshly spun at Wash & Dry on 18th Street. You see, I had walked past Washateria on 17th because it was hella busy, and I had done the washing at Wash & Dry only to find that all of their laundry carts had been stolen. Thinking it was a good time to try something new, it was a quick haul to Star Wash, which had an abundance of carts. More carts than customers; a proper ratio. Decor is hella cool. It reminds me vaguely of Little Hollywood Launderette. (RIP.) Although the whole place is a bit dark inside. I was soon out on the sidewalk standing in the dappled sunlight, reading my book. Washers are competitively priced, $3.00 for the standard uprights. The dryers surprised me! At all of the laundromats I have mentioned above, the dryers give you 5 minutes per 25 cents. Star Wash doles out 7(!) minutes per 25 cents. This is a significant savings! I found a review from 14 years ago quoting the same price! This is my new favorite place to wash my clothes. I hope to never see it close. read more

Absolutely ridiculous*** Came in to do my laundry and all I had was a twenty and needed to get change from the change machine. Asked the lady I guess her name is Olga , onsite if she can break it, but instead basically harassed me to not put the 20 in because despite the fact I had two laundry bags with me. Her accusatory nature that I was going to steal coins and go to another laundry mat or something does not make sense. I've never been treated so rudely about getting change so I can use their machines! How many people did they pay to write 5 star reviews? This place is less than one star. They post signs saying "No public restrooms" but the place sticks like someone hasn't flushed the toilet in weeks. There are signs on the coin machines saying "Out of Service." When you ask for quarters, the bitch hiding behind the counter watching cameras will tell you to use the machine. Then, when you buy "too many" quarters, she will yell at you and demand you give them back and tell you that you are stealing quarters. I decided to ignore the reviews about the infamous "Olga" lady, and give this place a shot. How bad could it be I thought, I already have my quarters just need to go in and mind my own business. In trying to do just that I walked in and was immediately confronted by the most disgusting tone of voice saying "You need a mask!!!" As I tried to set my things down and reach into my pocket for a mask I got two more loud and obnoxious "YOU NEED A MASK, YOU NEED A MASK!!!" I was actually shocked. Like no way, there's no way this person runs this business like this. Mind you it is July 2022 and even for SF to be this anal about mask wearing at this point is ridiculous, especially when she herself wasn't even wearing a mask... it's beyond me. I love this laundromat. I have lived in the neighborhood for a long time and this is the nicest/cleanest laundromat in the area. I've known Olga for a long time and she has always been very kind and nice. She hasn't had covid and has a large family, so she is diligent about asking customers to wear a mask. I can understand as she is there a lot and is an older woman. She has to endure a lot of homeless in the neighborhood and she is often there by herself. The owner is wonderful. He is very friendly and also donated to my husband's high school program. Such a great local small business that has been around for a long time and is an integral part of the community. read more

This laundromat is OK. The white front loaders aren't bolted to the floor so they can't be filled with laundry. The only machines that are set up in this manner are the triple loaders, which are more expensive, of course. And there is no option for a hot wash. Let me rephrase - it exists on the machines but if you select it so very little water runs into the machine that the clothes don't get wet. I sat and watched once and then brought it to the owner's attention. She told me to press "warm" instead and then the water flowed. Meh. read more

I've been going to this laundromat for 10 years and never had an issue like these one star reviewers are talking about. Olga is strict about masks, but I respect that she sees a lot more people a day than I do. She is always helpful and for folks to say she's mean to her grandchildren I just can't believe. I've only seen her be sweet and patient with them. And she's there 7 days a week while it's open. The place is clean and it's rare to see machines out of order. read more

I have used Star Wash many times and every time I have an enjoyable experience. I have left items in the washer/dryer and went back to my house and all my items were safe and sound. I've done a wash and fold there and the prices are pretty good (considering I didn't have the time to do it myself, it was very helpful). I love that Maxfield's is right next door, and I'll patronize while using their wifi :) Star Wash is clean and safe and the staff is so nice and friendly. read more

Someone tell Yelp this is the same business as Olga's Wash and Fold. After many lost socks, there are now lost towels and even expensive bike clothing like my $180 descente bib shorts that appear to have evaporated. On a couple occasions, I have gone back to discover I never received back entire bags of clothing until I pressed Olga, insisting that my clothing must be there. Voila - it miraculously appeared! Update 4/5 - I went in again to try to plead with Olga to find my $200 bike shorts. She didn't seem to care that they were lost - I had to go in three times just for her to check in her lost and found. When she did, she said they were no where to be found until she later admitted that a guy comes once a month to take away the excess clothing. I shared with her that I spend between $1600-1800 per year there, yet she was totally beyond reason in even extending a token credit to compensate for my lost shorts. She treated me as though she didn't know me (after religiously patronizing her store since 2006). How many of her clients are bringing in bike shorts to be air dried? I am sure it fell off a hanger and went to the guy who picks up the clothes. Interesting, I wonder if she gets paid to get rid of this clothing by the people who pick it up. Since the wash and fold clientele likely have nice clothing, I am gather there might be money to be made here. Other gripes: 1- she weighs your laundry with the basket artificially increasing the weight 2- clothing never really smells washed of late - sometimes I wonder if it goes in without soap The business is a model of complete disorganization, incompetence, complete disregard for customers' valuable clothing and total disloyalty to customer who want to be loyal to this business. read more

- Laundromat Review Only - I never liked doing laundry especially when I had to pull a pseudo-homeless lady dragging my cart on 18th St. on Saturday evening passing right in front of people dressed cute enjoying their dinner at Farina. I even got traumatized of doing laundry at a laundromat when I spotted a homeless guy jerking off laying on the floor at Wash and Dry (it just so happened I had my mom who was visiting all the way from Japan with me! She was like, is it expected that you encounter a random guy doing..."that" at launromats in America?) So I wasn't particularly happy when I found out my new apartment didn't have a laundry facility on site. As I bowed never to spot a guy jerking off at a laundromat, I quickly signed up for home delivery service at Laundry Locker. But there have been times where I don't have the time to wait for 1.5-day turn around for the Laundry Locker service. Hence I found myself at Star Wash. I like it. This is as much as I would ever like doing laundry at a laundromat. There is always a lady at the counter to take care of customers dropping in for dry clean/ wash and fold service, so I would guess it would be much harder for random guys to lay on the floor and jerk off there. The facility is cleaner than most laundromats I have used. The equipment is pretty nice - they have plenty of those side load washers. The best part is, it is right next to Maxfields where you can chill with your coffee, or if you so decide, you can chill with Boonts Ambe Ale on tap while getting your laundry done!!!!!! HORRIBLE alterations and "owner", who takes no responsibility for her work or business operation. ALTERATIONS WERE POORLY DONE OR NOT DONE AT ALL, WORK WAS NOT READY IN TIME, and OWNER LIES TO YOUR FACE! Take yer stuff there at your own risk: - I took two pants and a skirt to have the hems done/some mending on Wednesday and Olga said they could be done by Sat-- which was great, cause I was leaving town on business early Sunday. When I went to pick up my stuff on Sat, good ol' Olga said it wasn't ready, and that I could come back Sunday am to pick them up when she opened. Ok, not a big problem-- I would just pick them up on the way to the airport... -The first pair was a single-hem, which was OVERCHARGED as a double-hem. When I told Olga that the pants were single-hem and she was charging me double-hem price, she said she was charging extra because they were "hand sewn". If I wanted them hand sewed I would have done them myself (seeing as it was a simple single-hem) and not paid her $18 to do that. I told here that there are no "hand sewing" prices listed and that I should be paying for the single-hem. Good ol' Olga then started telling me that the pants were actually double-hem. I may not be a seamstress, but I know the difference between a single- and double-hem. -The second pair of pants actually was a double-hem, which she totally f*d up, so she didn't charge me for them. Gee thanks, now I have to take them somewhere else b/c they are COMPLETELY UNWEARABLE. - I took a black skirt for dry cleaning and mending an unraveled seam in a tricky spot. What I got was a clean skirt (their dry cleaning can be ok, but do read other reviews) with a BROKEN CLASP and the SEAM HAD NOT BEEN MENDED. When I asked the owner what happened, OLGA BLAMED ME FOR THE BROKEN CLASP and said she wouldn't charge me for the skirt not being mended. Great, thanks, cause I kinda needed to wear the skirt the next day but couldn't because SHE DID NOT DO THE WORK SHE SAID SHE WOULD. Outstanding Olga! -The icing on the cake was that the pant hems were not pressed. In case you've never had pants hemmed, it's only fair that I tell you that when you do, it's standard practice to press the pants so you have a nice, crisp, new hem. Olga, apparently, comes from another school of thought. She explained to me that (despite every other tailor pressing my pants) one does not need to press freshly-hemmed pants, and that it is in fact the responsibility of the customer to ask that hemmed pants be pressed. PRECIOUS. -So, I HAD TO PRESS MY PANTS AND MEND MY OWN SKIRT IN MY HOTEL ROOM. THANKS OLGA, I thought that's what I was paying you for! read more

The place is adorable, for a laundromat anyway. And I love--LOVE-- the side-load washers. They do such a better job than the top-load. And the change machine is always working. Great location too, right next to Maxfields, where I sit and wait over a glass of something or other while my machines are going. Minuses: 75% of the time, there's some screaming kid in there. Once I learned which machines work best (any washer on the left, and the first 4 dryers on the left), it was all good. Pros: -The place usually has more than enough machines available -Open early and late -Seating available if you need it -They clean the place every night -Owner is nice Cons: -Carts are old and wobbly (but they suffice) -Smell from the back alley can be bothersome if you're near the rear door -The same 1-2 machines have been broken for years, but this isn't a huge deal because there are usually more than enough machines available. read more

I used to love Star Wash. It was two doors from my apartment, and I took all my laundry and lots of my dry cleaning there. I had never had a problem--my shirts and sweaters always came back on-time and perfectly pressed. But then once I gave them a dress to dry clean, and it came back with pills all over it. What was once a nice dress with a pretty sheen to it was now a fuzzy mess. I walked out into the light, noticed what happened, and brought it right back. I talked to the owner and she didn't believe me at first, but then I found a patch that hadn't been turned fuzzy, and she understood what had happened. But since they contract out their dry cleaning, she said she couldn't do anything and would have to check with "the guy" tomorrow. Fast forward two weeks and about 20 conversations with her, in which she insisted she could do nothing and "the guy" could do nothing (he apparently insisted that since they didn't give it to me in plastic, I thought it looked less nice--um, sorry, buddy, but I know what my dress looks like). They said it must be a cheap material, but this was a simple Theory dress that cost over $200, so I doubt that's the problem--and I had gotten it dry cleaned in the East Bay with no problems whatsoever. Their "contract" on the back of the pickup slip said customers can claim up to 10 times the cleaning fee, so I should have gotten $80, but the woman at Star Wash said "the guy" might have a different policy and it's his fault, so she's not obligated to pay me. And she wouldn't give me the phone number for the dry cleaner. I brought it up with the Better Business Bureau, but upon getting no response from Star Wash, they simply gave up and gave SW a negative point on their rating or whatever for not responding. Yeah, I won't be going back to Star Wash again. Making a mistake is understandable; not owning up to it and giving the customer the refund you promise is despicable. read more

I must admit, I'm picky about my laundry. I felt like a big fat dork looking up laundromats on Yelp. I wasn't sure I'd even find any reviews. I know that when I was in Chicago there weren't too many laundromat reviews. I was happy to find out that that's not how SF rolls. You see, I pretty much hate laundromats with a passion. I can't wait for the day when I own my own washer and dryer. I've had enough of my nice stuff ruined by janky washers and dryers at ghetto laundromats that I cringe when I step foot in one. I can't stand it when my clothes come out smelling like someone else's nasty Tide, instead of smelling like nothing, which is what they should smell like when using Free & Clear detergent. Also can't stand it when my clothes come out with a thin layer of lint on them. Gross! Laundry is not supposed to have lint on it when it comes out - that's the whole point of a dang washer and dryer! I've even had this happen with washers and dryers in buildings I've lived in, not just laundromats. But the landlords don't care, they're not using the machines. I'm currently subleasing a place in the Mission without a washer and dryer in the building. My roommates do their laundry right next door at the Washateria on Guerrero, but I wasn't going to set foot in that place. The first time I walked by there was a homeless man sleeping in the window. The place just looks dirty and the equipment looks ancient. So I read the reviews for Star Wash and knew I had to give it a try. I figured I'd probably have to take a bus to get to the place, but was wiling to do that. Then I realized it was only about two blocks away! I've been twice now. LOVE it. I think it's safe to say it's the cleanest laundromat I've ever set foot in. The first night I went, a woman showed up around 9pm and began wiping down the tops of all the washers. I thought to myself "Yes, this is how it should be done! If you're going to run a laundromat, take pride in the place, keep the equipment clean, running well, and up to date!" It might also be the tiniest laundromat I've set foot in. Not a lot of room to get around here. Or sit. But there's a cafe next door, and benches outside, so that solves that problem. Most importantly, it looks to me like the dryers are brand spankin' new, I've never seen a dryer at a laundromat that's this nice! The washing machines don't seem completely ancient either. Yesterday when I went I did notice a banner outside advertising new equipment. The smaller washers are $2 a load, front load washers I believe are $3, and my loads are usually dry after about 30 minutes in the dryer, which amounts to $1. Best of all, my clothes come out lint free, without any bleach or grease stains, and without smelling like someone else's nasty Tide. Yes - now that's what I'm talkin' about!!! To top it all off, this place is actually kind of cute, and doesn't feel quite as industrial and laundromat-y because of all the stars in the place and photos on the walls. Well played Star Wash, well played. I'll be moving to Portland soon and can only hope I find an establishment with equipment this nice to wash my clothes. read more

I've been dropping off shirts for cleaning and pressing here on and off for a few years now. I think the service has deteriorated. Olga sends them somewhere where they are pressed sloppily without being properly washed (deodorant still clogging the armpits). For $2 a shirt, I think I can do better. The dry clean only pants were equally sloppy on stain removal even though I took the time to point them out with pieces of neon tape. time to find another place for my business. read more

So many washers and dryers that even when I came in on a Sunday, I could do all three loads of laundry at the same time. And the change machine means I don't have to worry about going to the bank beforehand, plus I can get some extra quarters for muni. Minus one star for no one being there when I tried to drop off some dry cleaning on a Monday morning at 9. I waited around for about 10 minutes for someone to show up, and no luck, had to go back the next day. Talk about a pain in the ass. Despite this inconvenience, the fact that they are almost literally right next door to my apartment assures them my business for as long as I live there. read more

This laundry mat is awesome for seven reasons...however, since I only do laundry while violently drunk, on Sundays, and today being such a day, I doubt if I will have the inclination and/or willpower to list all seven. Most of the machines in here are relatively new and up-to-date and have digital time displays alerting you as to when your laundry will be done. They also have a good number of the Jumbo Washers, which are my personal favorite. It can get crowded in here, and sometimes you get stuck using the old ass beige washing machines that were developed during the Cold War, in reaction to the Soviet Union's UniTech Top Loading Washing Machine of the Iron People. Using those ones suck, and people usually point and laugh at you. If you are lucky enough, or hip to the laundry mat game, you can grab the laundry cart with the dark grey rim, which is easily distinguishable from the other laundry carts, as the rest of them have light tan rims. Not many people know this, but the laundry cart with the grey rim is actually a LaundoCart VX 3000 Competition Model, a mean motherfucker constructed of reinforced aluminum alloy with carbon fiber drive shafts and titanium ball bearings. This monster can produce an ungodly amount of torque while cutting through the crowds like a rabid mongoose. I suggest amateurs steer clear of this beast until they can properly handle a regular laundry cart. read more

There was a fire today from a dryer getting too hot and igniting a spark. The woman managing did NOT call the fire deparment, and only called the manager after about 30 minutes and several of us asking. We were never offered a reimbursement and our clothes smell horribly of smoke. We finally called the fire department after about 40 minutes of waiting for the thick, dense black smoke to clear. The attendant of the laundromat blamed the woman whose clothes had caught on fire for putting too many quarters in but when I asked the victim of the fire, she said she had only put quarters...32 minutes. I had put 28 minutes....it could have been my clothes!! My clothes smell HORRIBLY of smoke and in researching just now online about smoke damage, it turns out you have to wash everything in vinegar to get the smell out!! Other victims of fire today (MLK Jr. Day), we should have exchanged phone numbers because I have a feeling this is going to be more costly to repair and more time consuming than we thought. I feel bad for the folks who left their wash and fold there and will more than likely NOT be told that their clothes all have smoke damage. read more

Horrible customer service! I walked into the place just before 9pm with the expectation that I'd get my laundry done befor the 10pm closing time. I was almost done right at 10pm and the woman who ran the place was horribly rude and turned the lights out on us. Simple courtesy and a little customer service goes a long way; something thats completely lost within this place Turning the lights out on your paying customers is NOT the way to gain repeat customers. I honestly don't think people who run small business in this area give a crap about people who keep their business going. Won't bother coming to this place again. read more
