I've been going to Stark for nearly a year now and highly recommend them. I first came to try the half Brazilian that a friend recommended. I hadn't had one before because I was afraid of the pain and, quite frankly, was embarrassed, even though I know people do this all the time. But she told me about the special blue wax that doesn't stick to your skin as well as her experience with the aestheticians. Mind you, I've been getting my legs and bikini line waxed for over 20 years so was no stranger to waxing, but this was a new thing for me. I have to say, all the people who work there are terrific. The peope on the phone are always very nice and they are always very helpful in working me in (I'm usually a call-at-the last-minute kind of client). And the aestheticians are wonderful. Each one I had made me feel perfectly comfortable with the process and the, eh-hem, position(s). All I've been to are great, but I tend to routinely go to Yanni and Michelle. Terrific women. Lastly, that special blue wax is indeed special. Having waxed elsewhere on my body for so many years, I was dubious that a wax that "doesn't stick to the skin" could afford any measurable decrease in pain, because I thought the pain is mostly from pulling the hair out by the root. But I was wrong. There is in fact a lot of pain resulting from regular wax sticking to the skin. I had no idea. So I'm converted. And now I get full Brazilians and wish I had discovered all this before. read more

Carissa does such an excellent job on my eyebrows and is always so friendly and welcoming. So glad to finally find a great wax girl! The studio space is super cute and there is an adorable boutique in the front that is completely separate from the waxing studios themselves. It's almost like salon suites but for esthetician's so when you arrive you sign in on a sheet near the wax rooms and wait to be seen. It's definitely easiest to book in advance. Parking has always been fairly easy. It's on the street with a meter or in the neighborhood where the school is. read more

I had a pretty good experience here. I've had my share of really bad estheticians, as well as some really good ones. I can speak only for their leg wax (which is what I prefer to test out before going for the Brazilian), but I really liked the cream wax that they use. I had taken a break from waxing for a while, so I was afraid it would be really painful. I was pleasantly surprised, and really liked the results. However, I'll only give them four stars as my leg hairs grew back fairly quickly, and fairly coarse, which makes me think that most of my leg hairs were broken, rather than pulled out. I guess I'll have to go back one more time before I make a final decision. read more

Michelle is wonderful! I've been twice and will be making my third appointment with her soon. She is very friendly and makes what could be an awkward experience not even a little awkward. Totally professional, but entirely friendly. She's lovely and I would highly recommend her for someone going for a first time wax! I definitely think the price (plus tip) is fair for the product and outcome! I live close by, so I walk because parking anywhere in Silverlake can be a struggle. The whole place is clean (SO important) and they have the coolest little variety of gifts or products you can buy. It's a little awkward the first time you go and you can hear everyone around you talking because the rooms share a ceiling - but once you get over that the atmosphere it perfect in my opinion. For the first time in my long and complicated eyebrow history someone who wanted to let let my brows do their thing! Sam at Stark is brow visionary. I went in thinking I'd get the standard shape I've always been waxed into, her suggestion means my brows are looking fuller than they have in years (but not quite the Brooke Shields brows they were when I was 14). I'm having to grow the front section out but after she explained how the new shape will "enhance my features" I'm prepared to deal with that.... She was fast and painless too. read more

After reading thru the reviews I made an appointment w/Jill who was super sweet. The place is very clean and pretty w/chill music playing in the background and cute gifts surrounding the lobby. This was my first time getting a Brazilian and HOLY CRAP did it hurt! I can't rave as much as everyone else due to it being my first time, but for what it's worth it was an interesting experience. Jill walked me thru the pain and gave me tips on what to do and what not to do. I may build up the courage to come back and hopefully it won't be as traumatizing. Although it was pretty pricey in my opinion, I appreciate that it's in my neighborhood and that the place in general made me feel it was worth more than it cost. read more

The fastest, least painful wax of my life! Isabel (and the rest of the staff) are wonderful. In & out in 40 minutes when getting armpits & a full Brazilian. Amazing! The trinkets out front are a bit expensive, as everyone has already expounded upon, but Stark's no frills studio combined with the oh-so-magical "blue wax" makes me a loyal fan. Same day and last minute appointments are readily available, which is awesome for someone as disorganized as me. read more

This place is absolutely fantastic! I have tried Salons all over the city and nothing comes close to this one. I have fair, sensitive skin, and usually found myself getting burned or bumped after a waxing. I am a man and proud to say that Stark is my Salon that gets the job done right. Let me tell you ladies, you don't know the burden of a wax until you've had your ENTIRE TORSO done! I have been trained by Forbes Travel Guide and AAA in Five Star customer service and have done salon/spa inspections before. Starks customer service and quality is fantastic. The ladies are very smart, and knowledgeable about the products, different skin types, and usage. There price point is perfect for the bourgeois area of Silver Lake. Especially for the eye lash tint! My eyebrows are an unholy mess. Some stick straight out, and those are the ones that even with the tightest squeeze of the best tweezers won't budge from my face. It takes a delicate and careful hand to shape these wooly-worms. I have this terrible scar on one brow that causes what little brow hair there is to just jut out wildly; and one wrong tweez makes the brow abruptly end about an inch too soon. And, since I've been going to Stark since I moved to LA, it's hard for me to go anywhere else. And, Isabella has been mostly the one to take charge of my brows - she really took the time to listen to what my concerns were. Even though my brows are not going to win any beauty contests, I can now at least trust them to not embarrass me in front of my friends. read more

YES! A waxing place that uses the hard blue wax and is open on SUNDAYS. For those who haven't converted to the hard blue wax way of waxing life - do yourself a favor and give it a try. It's more hygienic than the strips or applicator and results in a noticeably closer wax. Lydia is the bomb - such a sweet lady who does a marvelous job waxing up the *ahem* sensitive parts of your body with minimal pain, pleasant conversation, and no fuss. Parking is never trouble on Sunset. I wish I could give it 4.5 stars, since it is a bit pricey ($60+ for Brazilian) and I know of blue wax places that do it for less, but aren't open on weekends. Overall though, I love this place. Another plus - El 7 Mares is down the street so you can pick yourself up a delicious shrimp taco after your wax! read more

When I moved from Duarte to Downtown LA, I had to say goodbye to my waxer at Urbane Spa in Monrovia. I thought they did such an awesome job with Brazilians. They used hard wax, and was quick, which is why I loved Urbane so much. Upon moving to Downtown, I decided to DIY since I couldn't find a place close by that used Hard Wax and wasn't expensive. I thought Stark was a bit too expensive. Fast forward to 3 months later, after going DIY twice, I just had about enough of it. My pretty kitty wasn't looking so pretty anymore. So I up and went to Stark after having booked an appointment for a Brazilian. WOW. They were quick (I mean ten minutes quick), painless (as far as Brazilians go), and super pleasant. Totally totally worth the money. I paid $45 for a full front brazilian with Jill. I'll be back next month. For sure. read more

I've had good and not so good experiences at STARK. The first time I had a bikini wax there, it was VERY painful and very long and the results were less than stellar. Then I found Michelle, who was doing my brows there on a same day appointment and convinced me I should give things another chance. So I went for it...and it was still not so great-but mostly because of all the plucking DOWN THERE! Turns out, if you want to make the transition from shaver to waxer, you need to let it go jungle for at least a month. So, I sucked it up and did that determined to give STARK one more chance. Third time was the charm and before I knew it, Michelle was done in less than 20 minutes! She does a great job with BOTH styles of wax, because let's face it, when you are a hairy lil beast like me, sometimes that fancy schmancy blue stuff ain't gonna rip it! So my friends, take some arnica, 2 ibuprofen, rub that numbing cream on, go to Michelle, then exfoliate and use tend skin like your life depended on it and you will say 'adios' to your razor like I did!!! Great experience here. The technician was friendly without overbearing, and she prepared me well for the most painful strips. The place is clean and inspires confidence. At $60 for a brazilian it isn't cheap, but in my opinion that extra 20 bucks goes a long way toward comfort and cleanliness. I had Jill, she was excellent. I love Stark. It's beautiful and immaculate every time I've been. The people who have waxed me have always been very experienced, very good and thorough. Unfortunately for me, the last time I was there was just before my son was born (and there is NO WAY I'm letting anyone know how long that's been - lol) because there was no way I was going to let a nurse near my bikini area with a razor! The gal was awesome and didn't laugh at my gigantic belly (it was literally 1 week before the baby came). I told her to take all she could, that I could handle, which fortunately was more than enough. She even asked if I wanted a bit cleaned up in the rear and I was like "no way - uh uh - if my doc needs to see that area, he's looking far too close." We both laughed and everyone at the space wished me luck. Every time I've been there, honestly, very low on the pain and when they do my brows, I get no Borg like blisters and bumps afterwards, which is a huge plus! Thanks Stark! Well, for a reasonably hairy man (If Alec Baldwin in "Miami Blues" is a 10, and your average nectarine is a 0, I'd call myself a 6.5) the first time can be a fairly painful experience. Of course, some parts of the body hurt more than others. Just getting my back and chest waxed, I'd say the areas where the hair is a little thicker kind of felt like having a fairly significant sunburn with each swipe-off of wax being your best friend giving you a fairly good slap on the affected areas. But the second time was not nearly as bad, with only mild pain. All in all, not a horrific experience, and generally speaking over fairly quickly. read more

After reading reviews here on Yelp, I booked an appointment with Lydia on an early summer day to get some cleaning done. The appointment was fairly easy to get since it was early in the day on a weekday, and upon arriving, the parking was a breeze too since school was not in session and there were plenty street parking spots. The place was very cute, and had an array of products and other jewelry for you to look at and perhaps purchase if you're interested. The girls were friendly. Lydia was fairly quick and quite skilled with the blue wax that she used. It was decent service for me. Usually in situations that us gals put yourselves in, I like to feel comfortable and have that home-y feeling I guess you can say. Stark is definitely a great place to be, but the ambiance of it was not my style. Granted, you can be like "hey that's not fair," but if I have to clean up at least once a month and expose myself in a fairly vulnerable position, I'd hope I'd feel comfortable and less awkward. Service was great, and the price is a bit steep, but also with the area that its in, its still a decent price and some can say bargain. Stark isn't a disappointment, far from it. For me, it just was the ambiance. So again, if you're wanting to try Stark. GO TO LYDIE. She is truly skilled! read more

Who loves getting waxed? Not me! But this place makes it as pleasant as it could possibly be. First off, Yani is fantastic and makes you feel very comfortable. The setting is so soothing, they don't play Enya, and there are really great gifts lining the walls. I have bought baby stuff, jewellry, nail polish, candles, and books here--even when I don't have an appointment! It's also right next to my favorite bakery, so I can get a red velvet cupcake to soothe any residual discomfort that may come from waxing! The prices are reasonable, it's easy to get an appointment on the weekends or at night, and it's generally not too hard to find street or meter parking. I am adding to this review after reading another review of Stark! I have had a Brazilian here and it was totally complete--the backside included! It depends on who you get! read more

My first visit here was many years ago, and was great -- I've been a regular ever since! The space was very clean and hygienic. And calming. Which is important. Parking in Silver Lake is parking in Silver Lake. I specifically made my appointment for 10am on a weekend to avoid having to troll the street for a space, and found a non-metered one very close. I haven't tried any other places, so I can't make any comparisons, but I was pleased with the results! I've been able to make same-day appointments, and the receptionists are always lovely. All of the aestheticians have been wonderful. Bonus points for proximity to Lark, I reward myself with a caramel cupcake every time I go! read more

Jills makes an uncomfortable situation quite comfortable...if thats possible? She just about makes me forget I am laying there with my legs open and no panties on. I am the type of girl who hated changing in the locker room in high school...and who still never changes in front of anyone except my boyfriend...but somehow Jill puts me at ease. Shes chats with me about totally unrelated subjects while ripping all my hair out...does it hurt?hmmmm......it doesnt feel great but its manageable...it might help that I normally take a xanex before I go but its not half as bad as strip wax.....the hard wax they use is great and its all usually over within 20 minutes...i leave with a bald beaver and go home to a happy BF....totally worth the pain...and it lasts....the more you do it the longer it lasts...Right now its been 2 months and I'm barely showing signs of needing to visit Jill again... Anyway I love Jill and Stark waxing and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a Brazilian wax!!! read more

Stark waxing is one of the best waxes I have ever gotten in my life!! There was hardly any pain, the place is very down to earth..no pretentiousness. I felt totally comfortable there. I honestly only got my brows done, so my pants were on the whole time, HOWEVER, if i ever get the nerve to do a REAL wax, it will be here. Can't remember the young lady's name (maybe I blocked it out) but she didn't seem to know what she was doing or perhaps just not confident in what she was doing. When I left my eyebrows didn't look defined or shaped. In fact, they looked the exact same way they did when I walked in minus a few hairs -- and for this I paid about $30. To outdone to complain, I just admired the decor on the way out (they do get a gold star for that) and thanked the heavens that unlike some bad eyebrow waxes I at least still had something to work with. They have experienced waxers with quality waxes, and they have been able to wax me with 15 minutes notice when I called ahead. Parking sucks, but seriously when you are getting waxed, especially in the bikini area, it's kind of a big deal. I love that they are very hygienic and have excellent & professional customer service. I've been looking for a good waxer in the South Bay without success. My last experience, resulted in a wax mess, burns and scabs (and yes they had a couple good reviews on yelp), but they are no longer in biz, thank goodness. Stark will be my GO-TO wax place. It's a bit pricey but worth every penny! I just finished my Brazilian wax with Lydia and I highly recommend her. I've had my share of waxes before but Lydia gave me the best experience. She only works Friday and Sunday. It's best to schedule an appointment Sunday since you don't have to fight for parking that much and traffic shouldn't be too much of an issue. Lydia was very thorough. She's been doing this for over 9 years and still cares about every customer. I am very satisfied with the outcome!! read more

Went to Stark in an emergency situation -- an all-day conference two days before a trip to NY totally messed up my schedule and I had to cancel at Ona (my regular). After calling around a bit, Stark had great availability after work so I bombed down Sunset like that wax was the one thing standing between me and winning The Amazing Race. Parking is a bit of a nightmare in that part of town, especially now everything's metered. And at 6:30pm? forget it. But eventually I found a spot a few blocks down and the kindly, yet slightly scary big men sitting outside a hookah bar cleared up the confusion about meters and even promised to (ahem) watch my car. Bless. OK enough about me: ambiance is clean yet warehousy. If you need candles, dim lighting and "earth sounds" to ease away each rip, this isn't the place for you. In my mad rush I woefully forgot to pop a few ibuprofen 30 mins beforehand but my waxer guided my breathing, which kinda helped. The blue wax maybe is a teeny bit more comfortable than regular and Sarah was thorough. Seirously, when it comes to waxing, Persians do it better! Things is, 2.5 weeks later, this wax didn't last nearly as long as the regular kind I get at Ona. So sorry, Stark, you were totally there for me in a crisis but I'm sticking and ripping with Ona. read more

Went here recently with my best college friend at the start of a bridal shower "day of beauty" which at some point started to feel super decadent...(Maybe it was at stop three, drinking the third bottle of champane with a group of girls while getting manicures and pedicures), but I digress.. I like this place lots. Isabel was my waxer and she was great and didn't talk to much, which I love. No double dipping from what I could see. However, my friend was less than thrilled with her eyebrows and that was kind of a drag. My advice, stick with Isabel. read more

Today was my first visit at Stark. It was a little tough for me to find the place so I initially passed it. Metered parking on the streets so bring change. Also, because I was new here, I had to provide my credit card information in order to book the appointment. When I arrived I also had to sign a waiver stating that my credit card would be charged for 50% of my booked service if I didn't cancel in enough time-kinda turned off by that. So, for my first visit I only did an underarm wax to test them out (I should've done this at another place I tried and left unsatisfied so that's why this is a trial visit for me). The receptionist was super sweet. Michelle was my waxologist and was very polite and talked a lot (to me this is a good thing). Michelle used the bright light on me as she waxed and was very thorough-not a stray in sight! After my waxing was done, Michelle applied a nice oil that didn't leave me feeling sticky at all and I could go about my day as if I hadn't been waxed. She took a little bit longer than I would've liked but all in all it was a really good experience. Overall, the salon is clean and the items they sell include: books, jewelry, skin care products, and other cosmetics. Stark is a little pricier (Bikini $30-$40; Brazilian $65-$80; underarms $20-$25; eyebrows $25-$35) than other waxing salons I've been to but they don't double dip and Michelle used the blue hard wax so it only adheres to your hair, not your skin so it wasn't very painful. My favorite place is still STRiP in NoHo but I would come here again for the close location, friendly service, and if I had an emergent waxing issue. I forwent my usual stint at the local shitty hair place/waxing stop off that I usually subject myself to - because apparently I don't deserve better, and I went to Stark. Painfully hip and in the heart of Silverlake, I figured I'd upgrade my brows since I've had bangs for the past five years and ignored the bushes above my eyes. Upon growing them out, I called in to see if I could walk in on a Sunday. No worries. Waited no longer than 5 minutes, went into the back room and had a lovely chat with the lady who would weedwack my brows. So nice. So helpful. Educated me about my shape and painlessly led me to the right direction of how I should continue to shape my brows. I can't say enough nice things. To top it off, $25. That's not much more than I would have paid anywhere else and for worse treatment. High five to you Stark, I'll be back! read more

Stark! My new favorite thing in Silverlake. I recently had to relocate my waxing needs to something, well, a bit closer to home as I was driving to Pasadena to continue seeing my old waxer. But in the end, despite Stark's slightly higher prices than my old spot, I'm still saving money (in gas/miles on the car) and obviously in time!! I was interested to try hard wax, and was pleasantly surprised to find that it does hurt less. The hair pulling obviously still hurts, but it pulls at your skin far less - a much more pleasant experience. They have a million things in the front lobby, although I'm afraid of them because you find a candle you like and then BAM! $45!! Overall, the waxer was super nice (she used lavender oil afterwards - loved this touch!) and gotta keep the silver in Silverlake amiright? read more

I have had bad waxing experiences....really..... from messed up eyebrows to redness galore....and when i came here i was hesitant, but i had heard so many great things, i knew it would be okay, and it was........it was beyond okay, it was amaaaaazing!.... i had the best service ever, the receptionist was friendly and made it a cozy experience......and seriously, im not kidding, super painless, i dont know what miracle blue wax they use....but it works....the woman who helped me was very friendly, i wish i woulda gotten her name so i could request her from now on, alas i did not, but she provided the right amount of non akward chit-chat one needs to make a brazilian okay...lol the price is good for what you get, you get what you pay for and thats a high quality wax job done well.....so for $80 for a full brazilian, i say its totally worth it. not only that but they sell really adorable things up at the front, and after getting such an amazing wax, you really do wanna shop on your happy high.... so i suggest go, get an amazing wax buy some super cute face products and jewlery there and then go a few stores down to lark and get a cupcake....done and done. read more
