I love Stark. Once I moved out to LA I was bemoaning the loss of my great brow waxer and worried about finding a new place to go...a friend recommended Stark to me and I've never gone anywhere else. I see Isabel, who is super sweet and always makes my eyebrows look impeccable. (I never realize how scraggly I let them get until after she's done and I see how great they look! Oops.) I never have to worry about getting pencil-thin brows or losing my natural arch--I'm in good hands with her. Pricing is a little higher than I'd like (but still within a good range), but it's worth it not to have to worry about my eyebrows! It was my first time there and Michelle did my full brazillian and upper lip waxing. I had to fill out some form and I was in and out in about 30 minutes. Good, clean atmosphere with friendly staff. My two waxing jobs were $80. I thought it was a reasonable price for a job well done. A lot of street meter parking available. Oh, and if you are late 5 minutes after your appt time I think they won't take you in. Lucky I made it on time or else I would have had to move my appt one hour later. SUPER CLEAN and PROFESSIONAL. enough said. Whenever you're dealing with people near your "danger zone" you want to make sure everything is super sanitary and super clean. Last thing you want is funky stuff. With Stark, everything is clean! (did i mention the sanitary issue yet?) You may pay a little more, but at least you get great service and you definitely get what you pay for. why try to save $15 when you can get piece of mind? I like the massage salon like operation. It's nice that somebody greets you. The workers have clean white uniforms on them. The rooms are clean and nice. They accept walk ins which is great. The girl who did my waxing was very friendly and sweet. But the work was very careless and unprofessional. later on I found out that she started doing this business not so long ago which explains a lot why she was careless and inexperienced. If my waxing has done by a professional person I would come out with a very soft skin without rashes and bruises. This time pull outs were done very randomly. She really didn't fallow the rules like don't pull it against the hair in certain areas otherwise the hair break than rashes and bruises fallow. bla bla...Well that's what happened. My hair broke so the broken roots are hard and scratchy when I touch. It's not a nice feeling. I had rashes all around and few bruises. That's pretty bad. I don't understand when people don't take manicure, pedicure and waxing seriously. There is science in it even though it doesn't look like it. The money I paid is normal for a good professional waxing treatment but I'm gonna say it's pricey for what i got at Stark. Will I try it again? Maybe, if I'm too busy to drive to my regular best waxer in town for real, yeah I'll go again but this time I'll try somebody else. When I don't go to my regular waxer that's how I end up with; unhappy dealing with unprofessionals. I look at a business as a complete package. Their professional work, their customer service, their environment and their price. But the price is the least concern for me. I'm not loaded with money don't get me wrong. But I'm willing to pay a little bit more if I'm going to have a good, pleasant experience with that place. read more

After a fairly exhaustive search, I found and have been going to Stark for just over two years now and can confidently say that Stark is a good business made great by the quality of their staff. What a wonderfully nice place to have something icky and awkward done! Lisa was amazing, made me feel really comfortable and told me exactly what she was doing as she was doing it. She explained the different kinds of wax she'd be using and the benefits of each. She also asked me specifically what I wanted and shared with me what different people do and like and we figured out together what would be best for me. Her technique was great and lightning fast - but she also took the time to make sure everything looked perfect. The place itself is great...chic, simple decor, regular music at a decent volume, and the lighting in the actual room was perfect and comforting. (My last place in Texas actually used harsh, bright, fluorescent lighting and just made the awkwardness of a bikini wax even more awkward.) I'm totally going back here when the time comes. I've been here twice now and both have been solid, mostly painless waxes (I mean there's always a *little*). They use the hard blue stripless wax that is much nicer on the skin. It does take a little bit longer for them to do it than the usual wax, though. They are in my neighborhood which is pretty right on and both times I've gotten a same day appointment with no fuss. The price is a little high for me to be able to go regularly (they've helped through two 'emergencies' when my regular places were not able to take me) but they are only a little bit above the going rate. So I can say that if you are looking for a good job with little discomfort and easy parking, go to Stark! read more

I am so glad there is a place in Silver Lake that does only waxing and knows what they are doing! I have been here a few times already and each time a great experience. Probably the one and only place that i continue to come back to for waxing. NOTHING beats hard wax. For first time timers, go with Jill. She explains everything and makes sure you are comfortable. Some ladies are more talented than others here, but this place is always staffed with super friendly, helpful, talkative (but not in an awkward way) ladies. Two of the women who worked here have even given me free eyebrow brushes to help keep my crazies at bay--so nice! Only knocked a star off because of the pricing. Sometimes it's $20 for eyebrow waxes, but I've been charged $25 a couple of times and told each esthetician can just decide your eyebrows needed extra work and charge more, which is kind of weird. I still go back though because I can at least rely on walking out better looking than I walked in, and I appreciate that, since I usually let my eyebrows get a little cray before going in. I must say, having the hair ripped out from my girly parts is right up there with getting audited or mauled by a bear, but this was actually not so bad. I tend to psych myself up for these things many days in advance...anticipating the pain...the awkward conversation...the....stickiness... At Stark, they use a "blue wax" that doesn't require the strips and doesn't rip off half your flesh in the process. Yes...it does hurt...but not as bad....I'd be safe in saying this was the least painful wax I have ever had. The salon is beautiful, with the scent of the lovely soy candles. the soft lights and the super friendly staff, you couldn't ask for a better experience. I've been coming here for years, and the other day was in the neighborhood so called for an appointment. I was told they no longer make appointments over the phone and that I had to go online. As other reviewers have said, they've switched to being an overpriced gift shop that now rents rooms to people doing the eyebrow waxing. When I came in, I had to go to a computer and make my appointment. The whole thing felt unnecessarily complicated. I guess the owner is trying to save on overhead? So they can't afford to pay someone to answer the phone and make appointments? I also will be looking for a new waxing place. I'm sorry I was a bitch to the front desk person though. I tried this place over the weekend after trying to book at another salon that was full on Saturday. Stark was really flexible and got me right in at the time I wanted. I love waxing but haven't had it done it professionally in a while in order to save some dough. I would say Stark isn't the way to go if you want to save money (most procedures are more expensive than at other salons), but they will work with you. For example I just did the partial rather than the full. I've never had the blue "hard" wax before, but it was a lot cleaner, faster, and I had a lot less irritation than usual. I guess some people think it is less painful, but I would say it is equally as painful. Overall, I would say this is a good place to go for a wax. I'll probably try a few others before committing, but Stark is close to where I live, so that makes it hard to beat! read more

Thoughts of a First Timer: All of my friends get waxed. They all say the same thing "It's gonna hurt. You will probably even cry." So you can imagine my excitement when I heard of the blue hard wax. "It takes the ouch out of waxing" the website says. As a woman of color, I am skeptical of places that don't have other clients of the same race as me because I have a thicker, coarser hair texture. But when my bestfriend said she used to go to Stark all the time, I went back to the website and found the price list. My BFF is a waxing fanatic so her opinions are usually valid. I arrived to my appoint a bit early. The waiting area is nice. White with cream couches. Displays with jewelry, and Stark skin care products. Lots of them are over priced, but they are pretty non the less. My esthetician was waiting at the desk chatting with the receptionist. Both ladies were nice and kind especially when I told them I was terrified. My esthetician made me feel really comfortable. I chose a partial brazilian for my first wax. That means it's $20 cheaper and they don't do the back OR the don't do the front. Slight stinging at first. But every time she thought it would hurt, she would tell me take a deep breath. And honestly, it only hurt really bad like twice. She kept me talking, which I must admit helped distract me from what she was doing. For my thick coarse hair, she used the blue hard wax. She would spread it on and move to another area as it cooled. For me personally, it cools on contact and hurts less the cooler it gets. She even let it cool on the stick some before she put it on so it wouldn't burn me. ^_^ so sweet. Took about 25 mins to be completely done with me. Make sure you tip them! I just had to. She was professional, nice and made me feel very comfortable as I bared my hoo-ha to her so she could make me smooth. And I realized I don't like the triangle. But that has was more to do with my body than my esthetician's skills. And she used this lavender oil afterwards that was very soothing. She made sure I knew how to care for my skin between waxings. I will be back in 5 weeks to see Jordan, my lovely esthetician. I'm addicted. The service is okay if you do not mind snobbish and inflexible receptionist. I really like the beauticians but their policies to book appointments are not costumer friendly. I'll never go anywhere else. Period. It's one of those places where they just do everything better. I've had a spectrum of different technicians and each one is solid - so, even if I can't get in with my first choice (Jill) I can rest assured that whomever I get put with is going to be good. The appointments are easy to make, the service is a breeze and just the vibe of the place is relaxing. Maybe that's because I want to buy everything in there - which usually ends up happening. That's why I keep thinking that an eyebrow wax costs over $100, because it's the wax PLUS whatever soy candle, necklace, baby t-shirt, soap, lip gloss I purchase at the same time. Love, love, loooove Stark! I have an eyebrown obsession and am VERY particular about the shape of my 'brows even down to the last tiny little hair. I used to live in the Valley and had went to Mariam at Magic Touch, I would still continue going to her however the drive is just TOO much. So I've been going to Sam at Stark for the past 2 months. She is helping me grow in my brows for a thicker look and I have to say I really love where she's going with this look. She explained to me how the eyebrow shape works and where exactly I needed to grow hair in, she cleans up as much as she can and shapes them out. It's been a process, but I am already LOVING my 'brows and they're not even 100% done because I need small "blad spots" to grown in. I swear she must have miracle grow in the oil she puts on after the wax because anytime she says "oop this needs to grow in" by the next visit it's magically there! Anyway- it's pain free, they do a great job, it has a great ambiance, and I have zero complains about the establishment or the service. This fun, hip studio was able to accommodate me as a walk in when another local studio canceled my appointment for being five minutes late. I was really happy with my service and also my wax. Coming from New York the price was also easily comparable to what I pay back home but much less painful and overall a really great experience. I got my brows tinted and waxed and the tint literally did nothing to them and the wax job was subpar at best. I'm a 6 year veteran of the Brazilian Wax, and my recent experience at Stark was by far the best I'd ever had. The place was easy to find, had a lovely lobby and pleasant front desk employee. The lady who waxed me was fantastic; professional, THOROUGH, and friendly with just the right amount of chat. Big Bonus: BLUE WAX -- Blue wax grabs the hair, not your skin. For the first time ever, I walked out with nary a bruise/tenderness. The wax is applied/removed without strips, so it takes 30 minutes vs. 15...but it's SOOOO worth it to eliminate some of the pain of the process (I'd say it was a '4' on the scale, versus the usual take-your-breath-away '8') and the results are stellar. While searching through yelp I came across Stark waxing studio, which had amazing reviews so I decided to give it a try. The staff was friendly and professional, the studio was clean, the location was convenient and the atmosphere was inviting. I would definitely recommend this waxing studio, especially if it is your first time getting waxed. The wax they use is very different compared to most and claims to be less pain full. I've been here twice for a brazilian wax and once for eyebrows. All experiences have been fantastic - nearly painless and FAST! Eyebrows + brazilian was less than 45 minutes! The girls have been super nice as well. I'm fortunate to live nearby and have always been able to get in the same day. Great for that last minute "oh crap!" before a pool party. Bring extra money, so many cute knick knacks in the front of the shop - greeting cards, candles, etc - most of it made in LA. Stark isn't cheap (I'm not a waxing studio connoisseur, but my friends report it to be), but the painless blue wax and quick work make it worth it. read more

I went once before for a Brazilian, went again for a Brazilian, underarms and legs. Brazilian was always fine everything went well. Underarms were ok, she missed a few spots but. Now I honestly dont know if I can blame them or myself for this but my leg hair was sufficiently grown out to be waxed but the hair was just not removed. my legs are prickly there are so many patches... maybe the hair was too coarse or something but Im extremely disappointed that I spent $40 to not get what I was supposed to. read more

I moved to Silver Lake from Santa Monica a few years back and I've been looking for a new place to get my brazilians done. I've had several really terrible experiences with waxing and inexperienced personel performing this service so I AM SUPER PICKY about who I decide to let rip hair out of my most sensitive areas. I had resorted to just doing them at home, but after a few times of spotty work and getting exhausted from trying to contort myself into unfathomable positions to reach certain angles, I resolved to finally find a new place. A click here, a click there and I stumbled upon Stark on Yelp. I've walked by a few times since I live in the neighborhood and I always appreciated the look of the place through the window, but I had never stopped in because as I mentioned before, I do not wax on a whim. I called the day before for an AM appointment and the receptionist suggested I arrive early because street parking is difficult. I informed her that I would be walking over, however if I had been driving I would have really appreciated the advice. On the day of my appointment everything went smoothly. I filled out a quick questionnaire and was briefly introduced to Jill who showed me to the room. She asked if I had ever been waxed before (yes, yes I had) and if you've been waxed before you know how the rest goes. You strip from the waist down and cover yourself with a towel. When Jill came back into the room, she told me about the kind of wax she would be using (a blue hard wax that grips to the hair but doesn't stick to the skin). I have a pretty high tolerance for pain, but I usually still wince occasionally when getting waxed. This was a wince free visit and super quick. This is the fastest, most painless (not pain free), thorough waxing I have ever recieved. Jill was quick, curteous, and professional. It's definitely not the cheapest brazilian wax out there, but it's my firm belief that you get what you pay for. And I can tell you from experience that if you only spend $35 on a brazilian, it's gonna look (and feel) like a $35 brazilian. My first time getting a wax was on Hollywood blvd, and I was so uncomfortable with being able to hear the bustling outside and the not so clean area, so, I told myself for the next wax I need to find somewhere I feel OK going to. I found Stark and have been a loyal customer ever since. One needs to make a reservation (they are not good about walk ins) but you can usually make one same day. Their prices are pretty high (at least compared to Hollywood) but you get very friendly people. Extremely clean individual rooms and one feels comfortable. To me thats worth every penny. Every beauty business should live up to those simple standards. I definitely recommend Stark! read more
