We were in town to visit family and they recommend Starkville Cafe. It was pretty good. Little rough start though. We walked in and one of the waitresses pointed in one direction and said "sit there." Okay, so we started sitting in a booth and she tells us "no, I said back there" and directs us to another room. Okay... our waitress "back there" was nice and attentive. Which made up for the beginning, but that room was a very different vibe from the front room. The decor was just plain and it felt like an add on room. The food was decent. Nothing to brag about. The biscuits and gravy were on point. The omelette could have used some more seasoning. The syrup that came with the waffle was interesting. By itself I didn't care for it, but on the waffle it was really good. Stopped in for a quick breakfast in Starkville before attending orientation at Mississippi State. The place appeared to be packed with locals. The server was nice and answered our questions about the different dishes and their syrups. The food itself was just average. The pancakes are super thick and dry. My son was not a fan. The waffle was the same as making your own at any hotel chain. The French toast was super basic and dry. They used the heal of the bread which was somewhat of a disappointment considering you are paying a hefty amount for it. I don't think we will be back. I love feeling like I'm stepping back in time. This place gives that vibe. I found it on yelp while passing through after visiting my aunt in Mathiston. I wanted an old fashioned breakfast and they delivered They first seated me in a booth near the door. Perfect. Then asked if I would "sit upstairs" because it was Brittany's turn for a table. I reluctantly followed them to another room that was so cold you could hang meat. I declined and walked back to the booth. Shirley was my server. I swear I think she said she's been serving here 26 years! Super friendly and accommodating. I had the 2 eggs plate. 2 fluffy scrambled eggs, creamy grits and 2 hand patted sausage patties with a warm, light biscuit. Not convinced the biscuit is made in house but it's still a good one. With it always being crowded and my vegetarian daughter having limited options, I finally was able to convince my son to go on Friday after the egg bowl. Every server I've ever had has just been the sweetest. You definitely get the feel of an older hole in the wall place but that's just the charm of it all. This was a perfect find on a super cold Saturday. We had no clue as what to order so we looked around to see what everyone around us was eating. Disappointing. Charming downtown cafe should have GREAT food. It doesn't. This is my second time here and both visits have served up sad food. Hash browns came out cold. Actually cool to the touch. My (excellent!) server promptly took my plate back to fix it. The "fix" was to microwave the entire platter. So it was returned with hot soggy hash browns and rubbery scrambled eggs that had been nuked to death. Waffle was pale and soft. Just disappointing all the way around. I patronized this place twice, during my week long business visit to Starkville. My first experience was okay, not great. I ordered a simple two egg breakfast that included toast meat and hash browns. The eggs were cooked as ordered but the hash browns were underdone and somewhat flavorless. I was there early (before 7) so there weren't a whole lot of people there yet. I thought the time to table for the food was a bit on the slow side. The waitress was pleasant enough so I thought I would try again the next day. I showed up a bit later and they had a bigger crowd but I didn't see the wait staff running crazy. It still took 3-4min for first contact! I almost left but I was already behind in my schedule so I stayed put. The young lady who waited on me was very pleasant, just slow. I ordered the same thing as the previous day and again it took a long time. When my food arrived it was brought by the other waitress, a middle-aged, black lady whose name I did not see. She actually came to me from behind and stopped just shy of throwing my plate down on the table and actually hit my shoulder with the plate as she did so! No apology. No oops. No acknowledgment whatsoever! I still thanked her for the food but I got no response as she abruptly turned and walked away. So strange. I continued to watch her as she served others and the same cheery disposition prevailed. Oh well, at least it wasn't just me? My eggs were horrible. I order eggs over medium, done whites with a runny yolk. The eggs looked like they were poached and when I cut into them uncooked whites ran out. I ate them as a sandwich so I was able to get past it but, seriously? Gross. I tried to get them to doctor up the hash browns by adding onion but that didn't help much with the bland taste. Lastly, the young lady who was my actual waitress was MIA. I didn't see her again for 10min after I finished my meal and I really wanted a refill on my coffee. I did catch her eventually of course but the lack of attention was astonishing. By that time most of the patrons had already cleared out, so I'm not sure what the problem was. There are a few things that could be improved at Starkville Cafe starting with the service. Brittney (cashier at front counter) ignored us for minutes upon approaching the front counter. Brittney eventually noticed us and I asked for a menu. We waited for at least ten minutes or more before Brittney took the order. She was too busy socializing with the group at the window. In between "waiting for the order to be taken" there was an African American waitress who asked if she could get us anything. At least she acknowledged us. It didn't take long to prepare the order. We ordered five pancakes, bacon eggs and loaded hashbrowns. Once we made it back to my kid's home we did not have any butter, nor syrup. Seriously. I called and spoke with Brittney and she informed me that butter and syrup was given upon request. Interesting. I have never been to a restaurant where you have to request butter and syrup when pancakes are ordered. Imagine trying to eat large, dry pancakes without butter and syrup. We are visiting Starkville and this has been by far the worst food service experience thus far. read more

I was really excited to try out this restaurant while visiting my cousin in Starkville but unfortunately I did not have the best experience. I will start with the positives: I ordered the waffle platter and my waffle was really light and fluffy and the duck butter syrup was to die for--I've truly never had anything like it. Our server was also very friendly and the cafe itself was cute. Unfortunately, I found two wiry black hairs in my hash browns, which was very off-putting. Our server was very apologetic and asked the kitchen to remake my plate of hash browns, scrambled eggs, and bacon and brought it out very quickly. The hash browns on the second plate (which I was admittedly hesitant to eat) were cold, rubbery, and not crispy at all and the scrambled eggs were runny. I ended up only eating the bacon and the waffle but even after explaining my experience to the cashier I was still charged full price for my meal, which certainly wasn't worth what I paid. Me and my boyfriend came here for breakfast after we saw good reviews online. We ordered right at 11, and waited 45 minutes for our food. There was no checkup or anything, some people had been sat after us and got their food within 10 minutes and ordered a to go order. We didn't feel welcomed and on top of that, if you weren't an older couple that the employees knew, you wouldn't get served. The service was awful.
