2 egg plate that I had poured grits on my eggs before pic
    MikeTammie L.

I love feeling like I'm stepping back in time. This place gives that vibe. I found it on yelp while passing through after visiting my aunt in Mathiston. I wanted an old fashioned breakfast and they delivered They first seated me in a booth near the door. Perfect. Then asked if I would "sit upstairs" because it was Brittany's turn for a table. I reluctantly followed them to another room that was so cold you could hang meat. I declined and walked back to the booth. Shirley was my server. I swear I think she said she's been serving here 26 years! Super friendly and accommodating. I had the 2 eggs plate. 2 fluffy scrambled eggs, creamy grits and 2 hand patted sausage patties with a warm, light biscuit. Not convinced the biscuit is made in house but it's still a good one. The sausage has a little kick and I loved it. Fresh coffee. It's worth navigating the construction for the breakfast. I wish I was staying till lunch just to try their burger. Please note that I had already put my grits on my eggs before I remembered to take a picture

It was like I was on a movie set, in a sweet southern town. Imagine a place where you walk in and are greeted by name & you see people that you know & they speak & they say "Hey, how are you?!" ...I sat in a booth right in front with a window view & near the door. I was in heaven watching the lunchtime crowd roll in deep. I had the best sweet tea & ordered the BLT w/ fries lunch plate. I was treated with the friendliest faces & best service! Go ahead see for yourself, I got called sweetie & left a big tip! ;)

This has been a great place to sit over the decades. The food was was good and the servers were all constantly dropping more good coffee in my cup the whole hour+ I sat there and ate and did note writings as well. This is a cool old timey place.

Been wanting to try this for a couple of years. With it always being crowded and my vegetarian daughter having limited options, I finally was able to convince my son to go on Friday after the egg bowl. After a longer than expected wait, we ordered almost as soon as we sat down and the food arrived timely. I chose the Waffle Platter with Scrambled Eggs, Grits & Sausage. The waffle and sausage would have been plenty. I can see why they are known for their Duck Butter Syrup. It is definitely better than your typical maple syrup. The sausage was really good too! Eggs & grits were ok but I couldn't finish them. Service was typical of any local cafe, no frills but fast. I can see why there seems to always be a line out the door!

Eggs, grits were delicious!!!! Bacon and toast.

Cute little place downtown Starkville. Big crowd but we didn't have to wait too long. Service was very fast and nice. Atmosphere is hometown feel. We really enjoyed it. Had breakfast before we went and for Bid Day. We will definitely be back!

I do not recall a visit to Starkville without a visit to the Cafe. Absolutely love this place and all it's about. Breakfast here should start your day off right. Friendly busy service with "cafe" menu offerings warms my heart. I was fortunate to sample a new item this trip. Tomato gravy biscuits. If you like any of those items and it's offered you better try it. It was so dang good! If I'm lucky enough to get back to Starkville again, you can bet I'll be having a breakfast here.

It is always a joy to come here! The people are kind from the customers to the servers. The food is always amazing and never disappoints. Me and my family always come here when we visit Starkville, it's the place we all agree on!! We always take a bottle (or 2) of duck butter home!

I had the catfish lagniappe and it was SUPERB! I loved the blackened catfish over the grits with the yummy crawfish sauce. The flavor combinations were on point and I throughly enjoyed every single bite! My husband had the Caribbean steak and really loved the flavor of the steak, but it was cooked a little more than the medium he asked for. The flavor made up for it though and he cleaned his plate. The one she suggested had a small sweet marinade to it. I'm not really a sweet steak guy but I went with it.... and man was it really good. Cooked to perfection (medium rare) and tasted super fresh. The Mac and cheese was also solid, as was the sweet tea. Now... the chicken noodle soup: I loved it. Big soup here and although this soup was not "brothy" at all, it was thick and creamy, so good. We opted for bar seating and had water brought to us while we scanned the expansive drink menu. In addition to the signature cocktails, there is a variety of hard liquor, an amazing amount of whiskey, wine, (both red and white) as well as an impressive draft beer menu. It should be noted that there's a whiskey flight for $20 and you get a 1 ounce pour of each whiskey. It looks like there are seven on offer for this special. We didn't try it so cannot offer any more insights on that. We ordered the January gumbo special"Baby Duck Gumbo" - mine as is with chicken and sausage for $9 ( interestingly with okra which is only ever found in seafood gumbo ... at least in Louisiana) and the other with the addition of shrimp for $5 more. We asked for the saltines to be left off as we don't like to waste food and aren't fans of these old school standards. We split the brisket melt on marbled rye instead of Texas toast and left off the American cheese too... yeah we're *those* people... the sandwich comes with a choice of house seasoned fries or potato chips and we ordered the fries. The order arrived together (sigh). I would have preferred the gumbo to come first, then the sandwich, but hey, my mistake I guess I *should've* said something. Of course, I thought it was common sense that it should come in two courses instead of altogether. ... On a brighter not the order came just as we had requested and was a nice presentation. The gumbo was hearty and had plenty of protein albeit more rice than I would've liked. NOTE: if you are not an okra fan, beware. Both of us are good with okra so it was not a problem, but they do have plenty of okra in this gumbo. My dining partner said to skip the $5 add on of shrimp because although they are plentiful, they lack flavor. The sandwich is a decent size and was very tasty too and we both gave it a thumbs up. The fries were still hot and had a nice subtle flavor. Overall we'd give this roadhouse feeling, zany atmosphered little joint on the corner of Old West Point Rd and University a recommendation. The servers could use a refresher on how to greet guests and checking on them at least once during the meal :/ (1 star deduction) Oh, hey, they also have ample outdoor seating which is pet friendly for well behaved dogs.

I decided to try the Red Beans and Rice (red beans marinated for 24 hours, simmered with sausage, ribeye, and vegetables, and served over rice). While the ribeye added to the traditional dish, I was not a fan of the overall end result. It actually seemed like the whole dish had been cooked for 24 hours until there was almost no moisture left. The rice part was fine. My son-in-law decided to try the fried catfish I had been considering. While cooked well and had good flavor, the batter was not the expected cornmeal style normally associated with fried catfish. They were also out of the particular beer he had been wanting to try. After multiple attempts to pick one from the menu, the server said it might be easier to show you what we do have on tap. Service on this visit also left a lot to be desired. From the delay taking the order, having to flag a server down for drink refills and even to get the check. It was not busy enough to cause the service we received. We had been before with my daughter and wife and had a much better experience. So I am not sure if things have gone downhill or just an anomaly. The burger I had on the previous visit was very good and the Rosey Chips (house made potato chips) were pretty good too. My daughter is a big fan of their fried pickles appetizer. Will.
