THIS is what food should taste like! I didn't think I would enjoy anything more than truffle mac 'n' cheese, but boy was I wrong! While the mac was DELICIOUS, what was more amazing was the patatas bravas - crispy potato in siracha sauce!!! yush! So good! I also got to sample the hummus (less impressed), fried rice (taste!), and ice cream sandwich (yumm!!!). And don't forget the Mule. I was walking to the back and some lady at a table asked me what I ordered (Mule) and then asked if it made my throat tingle. She seemed worried, but don't you be - that Mule was juuuuuust right. My first impression of Starlite....hmmm..... Well First I loved the decor. The entrance was amazing. I kinda of felt like I was walking on to a movie set. Very trendy and hip to say the least. The booths were super comfy and the staff was super awesome. I had the flat iron steak which was delicious. I am very picky about my steaks and this one was cooked to perfection. I also had a taste of the jidori chicken which melted in my mouth. I was not drinking alcohol but the iced tea was pretty good. It had a little bit of a tropical taste to it, but not overpowering. The desert was simply amazing. I am not a big ice cream eater, but the pistachio-toffee ice cream sandwich was yummy. It even comes cut in 4 pieces so its easy to share. This place is pretty cool, I had a great time there! I would recommend this restaurant to anyone and I think I will take my friends and family there next time they are in town. read more

Wait...I mean the mule...they serve this drink in a copper mug...which i think makes me or anyone else holding it look a lil' like a jackass...or if your wearing stipes...like a pirate enjoying a pint of grog...however kitchy kewl the vessel...the drink rocks...if you like spicy gingery ales...as I do...you will love it! the decor in the starlite hearkens to what 1982 thought futuristic would be...dark wood...mixed with what we, now, think the the future will look like....white leather booths... honestly...the times i've been here have been after way too much pre-drinking....but there are always deelish food smells wafting through the aisle ways...so they presumably have food...but i'm usually already too full of vodka to order... no activities at this bar (i.e. pool table, darts, juke box)...but they do have a patio where you can suck down cancer sticks while you idly banter with a hotshot in guy-liner and a mankercheif.... read more

I'm not a judgmental guy. I don't believe in judging people, places or things on appearance, but somehow I ended up generally loathing the hipster species. The uniform, the ideology, the soft-ass-easily-offended attitude. Starlite is crawling with them. BUT... All the hype is justified. U can tell whoever crafted the food and cocktail menu, was really expressing genuine care, concern, and craftsmanship for your eyes and tastebuds here. Perhaps thats where the hipsters and I have a mutual appreciation for all things culinary. The Moscow Mule comes in a chilled copper mug with a behemoth Wedge of Ginger in it. They know full well you wont do anything with it other than gaze at it in wonder while your buzz kicks in. I LOVE that. I bit into the Burger and could tell all the ingredients came from a far away, special place. The dim lights hugged me. I felt like James Bond. I even made some friendly peace-talks with some hipsters. Thank you Starlite. The world is a better place because of you. read more

I had dinner here last night with a few friends and everything was just terrific, from the decor, to the layout of the place, to the open air terrace in the back. The seats are comfy, and everyone who worked there was super friendly, knowledgeable about the menu, attentive and cool. Tim Mays even sat at our table for a bit (he recommended the sausage board). The cocktails and wine list were fairly expansive, and the menu was small (it changes almost daily depending on what's available locally). We had olives, a delicious cheese plate, a sausage board with a house made hot dog and olive loaf, and for my entree I had the housemade pappardelle with tomatoes, basil and mozzarella, and a taste of the salmon with black lentils and mushrooms. The mac and cheese is also very good, and so is the Mule. I will be going back frequently. read more

Gotta say I'm a creature of habit and a restaurant with a rotating menu kind of throws me, but not at Starlite. I've been twice now and never been let down by any of the recommendations or the offerings. I had the Starlite Mule and it was strong, balanced and refreshing. My wife and I split the Jidori Chicken, and I have to say our expectations were high. Our favorite restaurant is Urban Solace and they have an amazing Jidori Chicken and this one might top it! Service was impeccable. Drink refills came fast, our server updated us frequently on the progress of our order. Great casual/romantic ambiance that feels modernist retro. Love the vibe!!! I decided to come here to redo my second anniversary dinner because the first place didn't feel intimate enough for us. The bar is beautiful. When you walk in it's the first tho g you see. To eat we had the roasted bone marrow to start. For our entree's we had the burger. Food was delicious. Drinks were great too. Inventive, fresh, stylish and modern....Starlite is all of these BUT with a classic twist..... It may not make sense but this is what comes to mind when describing this new restaurant/lounge on India street. I was thrilled with my first experience here! From the moment we hit the front door, everything was spectacular- a big surprise considering they just opened a few weeks ago. When we first arrived, we were greeted by a friendly doorman as it is 21+ only. He graciously held the door for us as we entered the bar area and all we could think is "WOW!" The chandelier that hangs above the bar is really a spectacular sight. The hostess came to seat us immediately ( who was also very friendly) and led us to a sexy, low-lit and intimate dinning area. Our waitress was there in moments introducing herself, giving us water and taking our drink orders-BIG PLUS on quick H20 and drinks!! The drink menu is awesome-lots of interesting and yummy cocktails to choose from. Their food menu is seasonal but definitely NOT limited! They cover all the bases without overdoing it, after all, who needs another monotonous pasta dish...you see them EVERYWHERE! We decided to start with an appetizer-the Frito Misto-a tasty and interesting combo of lightly fried calamari, spring onion, and pole beans served with a lemon aioli. It was great except for the bland pole beans-they just didn't add anything to the dish for me-I would have preferred a green bean or a snap pea something with a sweeter flavor, crisper texture and more color but it was still good. Next came the entrees....I selected the seared jumbo scallops over arugula, mint and cucumber w/grapefruit wedges. It was HEAVEN-sooo fresh! The scallops were seared perfectly and paired so nicely with the flavor combination of the greens and grapefruit! My husband had the flat iron steak which was also cooked to perfection, drizzled with an herby green salsa and served with simple fingerling potatoes and fresh baby squash-no fancy sides needed!! We really wanted dessert as I heard it is fabulous but we just didn't have room-next time I guess!! Haven't tried any of the food yet. Just came here for drinks at the bar. There's one bartender that seriously doesn't smile... other than that, the drinks are strong and good. Might I be the 100th to review this place? I'm even cooler than I thought I was! But not as cool as the "too cool for school" cats who frequent the Starlite. If emo is your name, "Mission Hills hipster" is your game, and Tim Mays is your Yoda, this is the spot to be. Starlite makes a mean dirty vodka martini. The burger is decent. I get that the menu is intended to be minimal, but it could still use a few more appetizer options for grazing. My plate of olives and spiced nuts just didn't do the job. Check out the back patio on warmer evenings. The bar is the spot to be. Ideal for viewing that massive star burst chandelier thingy, the focal point of the whole joint. Here's what you DON"T do: stop in for a quick cocktail, all dressed up, on your way to go out downtown. My sequin top last week got eyes narrowing and heads turning, and not in a good way. It was as though people just KNEW I was heading to Stingaree next. (I'm sorry! Not my fault! I was invited for a birthday party!) Actually I think they ask you at the door if you frequent Stingaree before letting you in. Don't know how I slipped through. That is a joke. Of course they don't ask you. They can just tell by looking at you. Thankfully, Starlite is a forgiving, "come as you are" kinda place. I did, however, feel like I redeemed myself by returning the next day in my Chuck Taylors, beat jeans, hoodie and sans makeup. Hailing from San Francisco, this place reminded me of home or a place I'd find in Seattle. Really cool vibe, top notch cocktails, and a great food menu. The pork belly was tasty, paired with persimmons on crispy toast. The arugula salad, was nice and refreshing, lightly dressed with a bit of goat cheese. The best dish of the night was the deconstructed chicken pot pie. The roasted chicken was perfectly cooked, with crispy skin and moist meat. Don't forget to try the homemade ice cream sandwich. I LOVE short menus! It's a rare thing these days to find restaurants that have smaller menus, only showcasing the best of what is available that day. Sorry Cheesecake Factory, you fail. Though I can't speak for their cocktails, the food was delicious! I had the mussles which were cooked with lemon and jalepenos. I also ordered bruschetta which had melted gruyere cheese...mmmm! Everyone seemed to really like their dishes, especially the tostadas which were a great deal during happy hour! I really liked the atmosphere as well. We sat out on the patio, but the inside looked awesome too! Parking can be a pain, but we got there early and found a spot. There were also beards on some of the mussles.... ick. read more

We want to start out by letting all of you know that Bells&Whistles was hired by the owners to design the interior of Starlite. We want to thank all of the excellent contractors and craftspeople who helped create the interior of Starlite, including, but certainly not limited to: Tidwell Masonry, Karl's Glass, Del Sol Tile, Neighborhood Plumbing, Surface Arts, Steve Rossi, Bassam, Kurt, Caesar, Lee, all the Jasons, Joel, Jack, Andrew, Mike, Brian, John Paul, and Ryan. And of course owners Tim, Matt, Travis, Steve and Bar manager K8 without whom the project would not have been possible. Obviously we are a little biased on the design so we are basing our review solely on the food and drinks- so don't consider this first paragraph part of the review, just an informative little morsel of introductions and an explanation of good things to come. We have almost finished working on the outdoor patio but are still adding other touches like lighting and accessories. They recently added a sign on the front of the building that will be backlit in a few weeks. After that we are working on solid walnut chairs and tables for the interior to replace the temporary white chairs & walnut ply tables. Now for the good stuff. The best thing on the menu, hands down, is the steak. This is seriously the BEST meat I have EVER tasted. It's soft & tender and is cooked to perfection. Travis, the head chef, takes great pride in the ingredients he uses and even went to visit the farm where the cows are raised to see how they were fed and cared for. How cool is that? Other dishes I've tried are: The Sausage Board- housemade sausage and really good pate on toasts, the Frito Misto- a quick fry mix of calamari, fennel, & lemon- the fennel and calamari are great, the fried lemon is interesting but I didn't care to eat more than one piece, The Burger- same great beef ground up with gruyere & caramelized onions with fries. Ok, now I'm realizing I've had almost everything on the menu. Unfortunately I haven't had the scallops (due to a later in life developed allergy that totally sucks because I freakin love scallops) but I've heard they are fantastic. The menu changes almost daily so you are always in for something new. My only gripe is that the prices are just high enough that I can't really eat there every night like I would like to. The drinks. The best specialty drink by far is the Starlite Mule. It's organic Rain vodka, ginger beer, lime juice and bitters. It's so refreshing and delicious it is easy to forget that there is alcohol in it. But it actually has ALOT of alcohol in it and will totally kick your ass if you're not careful. Take my word- by now I am an experienced Muler, pace yourself my friends. It also comes in a copper mug which rules AND it's only $8. The White Sangria is great and so is the Cucumber Martini which has housemade pepper simple syrup. Kate, the bar manager extraordinaire, concocted all of the drinks on the menu and makes her own infused syrups and bitters. They also have a great selection of beer, wine, & bourbon- they have one called something like Pappy Van Winkle- supposedly the best bourbon in the world but I'll leave that up to you, I'll just be drinking my Mule over here. And then there's dessert. I've only had the ice cream sandwich but really, I don't need to try anything else. They make the toffee chip cookies fresh daily then freeze them up with yummy vanilla ice cream inside. Summation: Get the Frito Misto for appy, the Steak (medium rare) for dins, and the Ice Cream Sandwich for dessert and of course, wash it all down with a few Starlite Mules. read more

I came here with my friends the night I defended my dissertation for grad school. It was basically the most intense and anticlimactic day of my life, so afterwards I demanded an equally intense drinking session with my closest friends, somewhere kind of special-occasion nice, with space for a large group, and not exorbitantly overpriced. Starlite fits the bill, it has a sweet design, an even sweeter back patio, tasty beverages, and a super friendly staff. Real classy joint. I, of course, am nothing but class. I blacked out halfway through the night, was hungover for approximately a year, and unlearned 5 years of biochemistry in one night. What's the evolutionary significance of type-II fatty acid biosynthesis in the apicoplast organelle of Plasmodium species parasites? I haven't a fucking clue, but you know what I can tell you? Shots of tequila, jager, and vodka, in quick succession, will seriously fuck you up. It doesn't take a PhD to figure that out. Or maybe it does? Oh. Snap. read more

I came here again recently for a couple drinks and had a very pleasant time. First of all, this place has the best Moscow Mules I have had anywhere (I love everything ginger). And they come in solid copper mugs, like all mules should. It is something everyone should try here! It is a very much hipster atmosphere in Starlite - from the people working there to the people eating/drinking there. It def. has more of an LA feel to it. I actually thought the place was very pretentious the first time I came here - which was like almost 2 years ago, especially the staff that was working there. But my experiences at Starlite have since been nothing but positive. Especially after I found out about their famous mules. I have come here mostly for drinks but did have the burger and aioli french fries once. I thought the food was pretty decent. I would love to come back next time and try other food items, including their deserts which look great on the yelp photos. I think its a good place to come with a small group of friends or a significant other. read more

Starlite is lucky that I have had years of good late night/happy hour experiences here on other occasions. Otherwise, this brunch review would have contained only 2 stars. The host was too busy with self-indulgent conversation with some obviously important "hipsters" to seat us right away so we stood in the entrance for a few minutes. He was nice enough when he finally did get around to greeting us. After we were seated, our server passed by us several times to attend to the table of "cool cats" that were directly across from us. It took her 10 minutes to greet us and ask for our drink orders. Again, she was nice enough once we had her attention and she kindly helped one of our party make a menu selection. The highlight of the meal was the cocktails. My Pamplemousse was the perfect brunch beverage. The Brunch Mary was good according to my Bloody Mary aficionado friend. Another one of us ordered the Holly Golightly (aka breakfast Manhattan) which I wish I would have ordered just so I could have had the giant piece of bacon that garnished it. I have a mixed review of the food. I think we all agreed that it tasted good, but the temperature of our meals was warm, at best. No one likes to eat a lukewarm brunch. Had we not been pressed for time, I would have sent mine back, for sure. The breakfast potato sides on 2 of our plates were half overdone. There was some good pieces as well as inedible pieces. The flavors of the food were all there. The presentation was acceptable. But, it was almost completely ruined by the fact that it sat too long in the back before it came to our table. I will NEVER go there for brunch again. But, Starlite does not disappoint in terms of cocktails. Go there for happy hour/late night to drink & eat the yummy mac & cheese (which has always been served hot in my experience, btw). And make sure to get a Moscow Mule. Saturday I decided to plan an outing for my birthday, and based on others recommendations of this place, I invited many people to come out to join me and Kim here. I hadn't been here yet and was hoping it wouldn't suck. Guess what, they serve food until midnight every DAY! When you first walk in, you feel like you're walking through the entrance to Space Mountain kinda. I liked that. Anyway inside are 2 large rock walls, and ahead of you is a square bar with chairs and tables around each side. In the center of the bar and as you walk in, you can't help but notice there is is a very creative light piece hanging right before you with little lights illuminating the room in a warm and inviting fashion. I've been to this place when it was a Lesbian bar to meet up with friends for wings! Yum. But over the years it changed from Bombay to 6 degree's to now Starlite. Even though back in it's day it served a purpose and for a long time, I can tell you this, it wasn't as tastefully decorated as it is now. The drinks on their menu are interesting as well, I decided since it was my birthday, to do a variety, first I had a bloody mary, but then as all the family and friends arrived I turned to Absinthe. I joined my pal who began getting tired with espresso's and added Baily's to it. (Bad idea to mix girlie but hey it's my brithday!) They had various drinks from their list that all tasted good but not too sweet or overdone (like girl drinks). The first time i went to starlite, it was only as a teaser to check it out, and sample the drink menu. i was, of course, immediately taken aback by the gorgeous exterior doorway (see picture.) the interior was equally exquisite, although i was so overwhelmed by it at first just because i didn't know what to expect going in. i was floored. gorgeous X infiniti. three cheers for bells & whistles (and i might just actually applaud you next time i run into you out.) we weren't greeted immediately, despite it not being busy, which made it a bit unclear as far as where to go. although, we didn't get far, gawking at the sunken bar, firework chandelier, and sexy mood-lit and warm rich wood decor. eventually, we were taken outside to the back bar, where a diligent and hilarious female bartender patiently let us drop our jaws at the drink menu options, and made helpful, honest suggestions. i ordered a galapagos (a pepper-liquor infused vodka drink with pink grapefruit and brandied cherries on a stick), my friend got the starlite mule (vodka again mostly, with a bit of lime, and ginger beer), and my bf got a guiness which was poured like the irish would. excellent. 2nd time around, just with my bf, for a little date night dinner. i couldn't resist the galapagos again, and tried the pimm's cup before we left (oops, is it timm's cup? and oh, the specialty drinks run $8 and are poured quite generously) we ordered the caramelized onion, gruyere burger, which although i do not like onions usually, was phe-nom-e-nal. seriously, best burger i've ever eaten, ever. and the flat iron with smashed fingerling potatoes- also extremely impressed with how tender the meat was, and rich the buttery, but not overdone, sauce made it. seriously guys, you have outdone yourself with this place. if i can afford it, i will come back again and again. and again and again. read more

We came in to Starlite for our 5 year anniversary with a reservation. I had asked for a bit quieter, secluded space, and they gave us a great table, with no one near us. The entire staff was amazing and treated us really well, they all knew it was our anniversary, and delivered on that experience. Through out the night the entire staff kept the tables close to us empty so that we could enjoy each other's company. They also congratulated us, and gave us a surprise slice of cake without asking, which was delicious. Not only did we experience all of this special treatment, but the food was delicious and the drinks were incredible. Starlite stopped serving those delicious donuts for Sunday brunch! This is our second time for brunch in two months and we were disappointed with no more donuts. :( I understand it's a business decision--but darn, those were tasty! I had the grilled cheese (gyuere cheese, granny smith apples, on a slightly sweet toasted bread)--It was good but certainly could have had more cheese for $11. It came with fruit salad (the other side options include fried potatoes, salad, or beans) My husband ordered the scrambled eggs with chorizo, which he said was just okay. It came with three tortillas and a choice of side (he picked beans). He enjoyed the bloody mary though! read more

Gawd, I love this place. It is where I first discovered the delightful Moscow Mule before it blew up into the cocktail juggernaut that it is now. The entry way is stylish and chic, and the low bar is a sexy little place for a date. Plus, there is a back patio for warm weather evenings. They are of course famous for the Mule, but I like how they have some twists on it like the Kentucky one that uses bourbon instead of vodka. They also have a delightful champagne drink for when you're feeling fancy. Their bar is fully stocked, and along with it being where I was introduced to the Mule, it is where my husband first tried Pappy Van Winkle bourbon. Which has led to a passion for finding that damn stuff everywhere! Seriously, it is the perfect spot for a night cap, socializing with friends, or snacking on some lite bites. Go here and get some drinks. They are delicious!! I particularly liked the blood orange sparkler. Very refreshing!! The Timm's cup was also good, but I wasn't into the Kentucky Colonel. That's probably just down to an incident in my past with SoCo, because my friend liked it a lot. She's Canadian; apparently they drink a lot of rye. The hostesses, servers and bartenders are all cute and friendly. Service was very attentive, at times even a little overly so. I had a burger and fries, both really tasty. My friends who had macaroni & cheese, spinach salad, and the artichokes and leeks over white beans all said their food was good as well. The decor is really interesting too. It has that whole Palm Springs feeling going on, especially outside. I love how the bartenders' area is sunken so they are at your height when you're seated at the bar. The tunnel entry really makes a focal point of that cool chandelier. Their outside patio and bar are nice as well with plenty of heating for those cold San Diego nights. Yes San Diego IS cold sometimes! The only thing I didn't like about the interior design was the bathrooms. They are black. Black toilet, black tiles, dim light and a mirrored wall so you can watch yourself. It felt a bit dirty to me, and I don't mean naughty dirty, (that would be ok and I think was the intention) I mean dirty with actual dirt, especially because it smelled like pee in there and you can't see very well. So happy I was finally able to check out Starlite! An absolute immaculate place that - aesthetically - is nothing short of perfect. I came here and ordered the catch of the day expecting they'd serve me on a plate but instead got salmon which I have to admit was the best seafood I'd had* since the tuna in a can+mayo sandwich I had for lunch earlier in the day. Ha I'm just kidding, I can't afford bread so I just had the tuna straight out of the can..and I'm not quite sure if it was mayo that was in there or not. In any case if I had $8 for every time I'd been here I'd have $8 in my pocket right now which I'd use to come back here and order a mule which beat the hell out of the cough syrup I keep under my bed whenever I try to get drunk. Looks can deceive and the mule surprisingly packs so much punch for its size I had to stop after 13 of them but next time I'm coming in sober and try to have more. Looking at this place from the outside you would never have thought that something amazing would be beyond those doors. The interior was impressive. Instantly, the image of dirty "urban campers" and the uncomfortably dark streets of the world outside the doors of Starlite are erased. Seeing as how nice Starlite was, I was expecting service to be real shitty considering we were sort of underdressed. However, I was fooled! Service was phenomenal given the amount of people inside and our previously stated circumstances. We ordered the french fries and they were excellent and I'm under the impression that the Starlite mule and ice cream sandwich must have landed from heaven. Starlite? What have you done to me? You must have cast a spell on me with your delicious libations. So much that it haunts me in my dreams. Atmosphere is awesome! Food is ok, octopus was dry and fishy. Steak was ok. Nothing special about the food. Drinks are on point. Great place to meet friends for drink. read more
