I recently visited State Grill and Bar using a Virgin Experience voucher for the 86th Floor Sunset Admission and Dinner package. Before booking, I called the restaurant to clarify the redemption process. The staff member instructed me to exchange the voucher first and call back for a same-day reservation, which I did for 6:30 PM. However, upon arrival, the hostess could not honor our vendor email confirmation because the system required a specific QR code, and our reservation did not appear. While the hostess kindly offered us a seat while we spent an hour on the phone resolving the issue, it was an uncomfortable inconvenience. Once we finally received the QR code and were seated, the night completely turned around. The food was absolutely delicious, and our server, Jesse, was phenomenal. I would easily give this experience 5 stars, but I am rating it a 4 because the restaurant needs a better confirmation system with outside partners to protect guests from these types of booking issues. read more

We visited for Valentine's Day, drawn in by the special holiday menu and the promise of a memorable night out. The starters and cocktails were attractive, and the setting felt right for a romantic dinner. But unfortunately, what should have been a great experience quickly soured. The swordfish from the holiday menu, while beautifully presented, didn't sit well -- I ended up with a pretty nasty bout of food poisoning shortly after, and it seemed very likely that the fish was the culprit. By the next day, I was dealing with classic symptoms that put a real damper on what had been a special evening. It's a tough call because many diners enjoy their meals here and often highlight the ambience and service, but this experience was genuinely unpleasant and something I wouldn't wish on anyone celebrating a special occasion. Would I recommend it? I'd say proceed with caution, especially when ordering seafood, and make sure you're comfortable with risk on a night you really want to go well. read more

Nice lunch spot for a business or friend lunch. They have great salads and mains, but it's not inexpensive.

Conveniently located inside the ESB, this spot is perfect for a team lunch. You don't need reservations, and there's usually no wait during lunchtime. The steak frites were good, and the salmon wasn't bad either. I'm looking forward to trying the lobster rolls next time. The service was excellent. read more

State Grill and Bar is right on the 1st floor of the Empire State Building and is a great happy hour spot for after work. They don't have sparkling wine for happy hour, but do have wine for $9+ and beers for $7+. Also from Monday to Friday, they have daily happy hour cocktails for $12+. Wednesday is my favorite, which is Aperol Spritz. This week, I came here for a work lunch, which was very nice. The Grilled Branzino ($34+) was delicious and the service was wonderful. It may be pricey for everyday use, but I would highly recommend for a business meal. read more

To start off: this restaurant is NOT located at the top of of the Empire State Building. We definitely did not look into this -- apparently, only valentines dinner is at the top. You will definitely get a nice view of the street though. Anyways, the drinks were very good and very strong. I will say the espresso martinis came in very cute empire state building glasses! The food here was surprisingly good. I thought the proportions were very reasonable and the appetizers were great to share. I got the Campanella pasta which was just added to the menu a week ago and normally I'm not a fan of peas in pasta, but I will say this pasta was top notch, especially if you're a fan of crab. The assorted cookies were a night light dessert to share with the table. The service here was pretty decent as well. Our waiter was friendly and gave his honest opinion to the questions we asked. Overall, I think this restaurant is probably one of those spots you go to once for the experience just to cross off the list. I would most likely not go back, but if you're a tourist visiting the empire state building then this could be a spot you go to afterwards. read more

Food is often just adventurous enough to distinguish it - while servings lots of classic favorites. I have been there many times and will come back. Try the Brussel sprouts! This is the restaurant you get if you book with the Empire State YOU DO NOT GET A VIEW. It's in the lobby adjacent to the Empire State observatory. We felt like we were definitely misled by booking it thinking it was dinner with a view. Don't make the same mistake as a tourist. The hostess and waitress were both super nice, and our waitress was extremely attentivel. small but to the point menu, pricing was not bad at all (except for the $13 thing of fries). As an app, we got the fresh sourdough loaf with rosemary butter. Was absolutely delicious. Crispy and flaky outside, soft and warm middle. For dinner, nothing really jumped out at me on the dinner menu, so i wound up doing an order of the Crispy Calamari. Was not over breaded, and cooked perfectly. I really wanted to like the food based on the upscale feel we were expecting but it was sub par at best. Both me and daughter could not finish our meal because the flavor of each dish was just off. Came here on a Saturday evening 30 minutes early to the reservations and they got us in no problem. Our server Jay was great and even was able to give us tips on what sight seeing to do. For entrees I got the Garganelli pasta which was delicious but beware if you're sensitive to spicy foods it does have some spice. My mom got the Salmon a la Plancha and enjoyed it. We shared a side of Mac and cheese and practically had to fight over it cause it was so good!! Overall I enjoyed my dinner. The service was great as well as the food. My only tip is that if you're assuming you have a view hence the Empire State location, you do not since the restaurant is the ground level of the Empire State Building. read more

My boyfriend and I recently came to this establishment on October 20, 2018! We had made reservations on Open Table after reviewing the menu online. When we arrived, we were instantly greeted by a young gentlemen (who later happened to be our waiter). Jay was phenomenal! He greeted us with a warm smile and treated us as if we were his regular customers! His personality and willingness to make our celebration dinner special was outstanding. Any questions we had, he answered! If we asked him for his suggestions, he gave them and boy was he right! Not only was Jay wonderful, but the food was spectacular was well! As an appetizer we ordered the Cheese & Charcuterie and Fried Calamari. For dinner, my boyfriend ordered the Sausage Cavatelli and I ordered the NY Strip Steak. Everything was flavorful and fresh! Although the food was pricey, it was definitely worth it!! As a dessert, Jay brought out their Homemade Ice Cream with a little sign saying "Happy Birthday!" How awesome is that?! Over the top service and the food was delicious too. It made a great impression on us of New York City!

We were served a chicken burger that was completely raw in the middle. Nothing else really needs to be said - the manager was nice about it, and the bill for the meal was on the house, but that's a mistake that should never be allowed to leave the kitchen. As for the rest of our experience, the brussel sprouts we got as an appetizer were good, but we did have to wait 30+ minutes after ordering to get it, despite the restaurant only being about 25% filled. We also had to ask someone to come refill our water when we got our main dish (45 minutes after we ordered) because they hadn't refilled the small cups that whole time. Service overall was just really slow, even though staff were just standing around the host stand. If it were just for these other things, I probably would have given a 3 or 4 - but nothing compares to being served raw chicken. read more

Dining at State Grill and Bar was truly an amazing experience and located at the iconic Empire State Building! During our dinner, we were served with attentiveness and our server provided great recommendations. For appetizers, you can't go wrong with a classic, fried calamari with banana peppers that added a uniqueness to the dish. We ordered the jumbo crab cakes with aioli and the beef short ribs for the main course. Both dishes were so delicious, the beef short ribs tender and perfect. We couldn't get enough of both dishes and really glad they were recommended by our server. And onto dessert...the macadamia nut tart is a must try! They make all desserts from scratch daily which is great. We dined here pre-COVID and I hope that someday I can go back and experience the rest of the great food and service. Had reservations for lunch here today for a business lunch. We arrived about 15 min ahead of 2 others in our party and we were still seated and served drinks. That was my first plus here. Most places do not seat you without your whole party being present. I ordered the quinoa salad with shrimp. It had chickpeas and feta mixed in it. Really delicious. I would definitely order it again. We shared the cookie platter for dessert. I only tried the macaroon off of it but that was amazing. State Grill and Bar is pricey so this isn't an everyday dining place but I would come here again. First off...this location is on a Ground Floor. Don't expect a restaurant with an amazing view on the50th floor. With that being said, this has been one of the best places I've eaten at in a while. The wife and I had appetizers and a meal here before heading up to view New York from the top of the Empire State building. The tater tots are a must have as they are filled with cheese and have a special sauce on the side. My wife had some sort of steak that was cooked medium well to her liking and I had the jerk chicken that was delicious though I wish the mango habanero sauce had an extra kick to it as it was fairly mild. Patina Group has great restaurants. Food is always delicious and great service. The Short Ribs is delicious. Definitely try it. I've read people complaining of the small portion and it isn't. Ita just right. You so not need a knife for this. Ita Super tender. The mash potatoes that accompanies the dish it Super velvety and smooth. The Risotto special was awesome and loaded with shrimp. I think they should put this on the regular menu. Only dish I thought was so so was the Kale Salad. Salad was fresh but it was overwhelmed by the blue cheese and it was all I could taste. read more
