This hotel was picked on two criteria: price and location. No shortage of hotels in the DC area, especially around the museums/downtown/White House, et al. but the costs get high quickly. This hotel gave us a great room (two beds, kitchen, desk, vanity, wireless, others) for a great rate. We specifically did not want to rent a car for this (week long) trip, and honestly, it wasn't missed. This hotel is within easy walking distance of everything you think about in Washington, and even if it isn't for you, cabs are prevalent and relatively cheap. The hotel has recently (May 2013) undergone some renovations, and judging by 'the debris' around the garbage area, it continues. The bathroom was great, my wife loved the vanity. While it didn't have a movie service, the TV had a great selection of channels and was a relatively new flat-screen. Beds were beyond comfortable, and each bed had four fantastic pillows). Pros: - location, location, location. Put your walking shoes on, and you're at the Whitehouse in ten minutes, the monument in 15. About a 10 minute cab trip to/from the airport. - Staff very friendly (but honestly, didn't interact too much). We check in, get our keys, and that was about it for us. The housekeeping service was top notch. - Always good to have a kitchen. The CVS next door has a pretty good food selection, and with the exception of fresh fruit, more than enough to take care of breakfast needs (and your late night snacks). - super quiet. I did not realize how good the windows were at keeping sound out until they were opened. Others mentioned 'paper-thin walls' but in the week we were there, didn't hear one noise. - area is active, without being busy. It's pretty much on the campus of The George Washington Univ, so a lot of youngsters milling about but a pretty serious vibe. Cons: (and some of these are nit-pickers). - it's a converted apartment building(s), that have been merged to make a hotel. Our room was (literally) the farthest from the check-in as you could get. It was a bit of a thing going up stairs, through the parkade, up elevator. But easily dealt with. - the elevator is on the slow side. - kitchen does not have a microwave, and while it has a stove, no pots or pans were available. - I would caution anyone with mobility issues, though. Make sure you notify the staff of your concerns so you get a room that is easier to get to, etc. - while we didn't have a car, I can see how parking may be an issue. I have stayed at this hotel many times over the years. It's not the most sparkling. Not the most impressive. Not the quietest. Not the most contemporary. But I still love it. Charming in its shabbiness. I believe it's an all-suite with kitchenette and internet, which was great for my four-day stay. Located in a perfect area if you're visiting for a couple of days. My sister and I were able to walk to all the museums and sites we had planned. It wasn't too expensive considering we stayed there just before Christmas and the room was a good size. They also have a nice restaurant if you don't want to venture out too late. read more

The hotel is next to the State Department and also close to the National Academies. The venue is great for so many things in DC. The rooms are clean and of OK size. The breakfast was OK but nothing fantastic. The front desk is not very attentive. Given the location they do not have to try and it shows. The rooms Look like an apartment building turned into a hotel. Don't expect to get a later checkout AT ALL. The front desk may tell you to check in the morning for a later check... It's BS, you won't get it. We were here for the nations triathlon and needed the extra time but no luck. The price was very decent given the incredible convenience but be there's a $30 valet parking fee per day. It's very unlikely we'll stay here again... This was our first trip to DC so I really didn't know what to expect. Flew into Reagan airport, grabbed a cab, and headed to state plaza hotel. From the moment we got there the entire staff was so pleasant and knowledgeable. Everyone went out of their way to say hello, Help with luggage and answer any questions. We had a great room as well. Large room with a kitchen with a fridge, micro, sink, and stovetop. I would have rated this higher but the air conditioner was leaking and a dirty sock was under the bed. Other than that this place was very clean. The location is also fantastic. We could walk to the metro, we walked from there down to the Lincoln Memorial and across the national mall and if you need anything there is a CVS right next-door. We also found a great little restaurant called Quigley's/ Tonic and they have a great happy hour and was only about two blocks away. And if you get a chance there is a restaurant about eight blocks away called founding farmers that was excellent. You do need a reservation there so you can do that through open table even if you can't find one on their website. I would definitely go back here and recommend it to everyone. read more

My biggest complaint is that my room was next to the elevator which was extremely loud. I'm hard of hearing and yet the squealing elevator still kept me up. I should have changed rooms but by the time I noticed it I had already unpacked and was exhausted. Other than that, the rooms themselves are nice enough - fairly large, clean, newly renovated. First I would like to state that I had a lovely two night stay at the hotel; however, I had left two dresses hanging in the closet accidentally and when I arrived home to unpack I immediately called the hotel to report my mistake. I checked out at noon and called at 6:00 p.m. I was told that the dresses were not there and the attendant responsible for cleaning the room was off and I would be contacted next week with more information. Silence. Nothing for a week. I then contacted the hotel on the following Tuesday. I was responded to with an apology and again told that the attendant would not be in until Thursday and that they would contact me with any information after this day. Nothing. Again. I emailed the contact person. Nothing. Again. I waited 6 days and then emailed them again. Nothing. I understand that by forgetting these items I opened myself up to having them taken by another guest or employee of the hotel; however, to ignore and dodge my inquiries is what has put a sour taste in my mouth. I cannot help but assume that it was an employee who took the clothing as there would not have been enough time for another guest to have checked in and I would hope that upon my departure a thorough cleaning of the room would have been done which would have included checking the closet. If you cannot trust the people who clean your room with the security of your belongings then who can you trust? read more

Decent hotel for the price, and near the Kennedy Center. Old and slightly decrepit, however. "Impressive?" I don't think so. I went for breakfast at the restaurant and was greeted by one of the worst waiters I've ever had. "May I help you?" he said, as if to imply "WTF are you doing here?" I said, "I'm here for breakfast." He complained that if I didn't have a coupon I'd have to be charged. Was I ever expecting not to pay? Then I ordered a bottle of water that he brought to me with no glass. No, it's fine, I'll just drink it out of the bottle... The entrances are exact copies on both sides of the street, which is confusing to say the least. And you have to go outside to get from one building to the other, which isn't great in winter. And my room wasn't ready when I got there at 5PM. Have I kvetched enough? No wireless internet, either. But three stars for being inexpensive, fairly clean, and quite conveniently located. read more

Recently stayed here for 7 days/6 nights with my family. Overall, not a bad experience and the price was fantastic for April in D.C. Ambiance/Rooms - small lobby, hallways are very plain, but really - who is looking at these? Our room was pretty plain in decor, we had a small kitchenette which was completely sufficient for breakfast and snacking later at night after sightseeing. The bathroom was small, but there is a vanity room so someone could be drying hair/putting on make-up, etc., while someone was in the bathroom. The fixtures were older and I would say our only complaint was with the "flushing" of the toilet- not a lot of oomph to it! The other person in our group staying at the hotel had a room with no kitchenette, but the whole room and bathroom looked as they had been "modernized" with black/chrome/white decor and fixtures. Also a better flushing toilet! The pillows were HUGE - 4 to a bed, with 2 winding up on the floor every night. They were almost too big to be comfortable. Food - we had dinner twice in the F Street Bistro. Service was a tad slow, like they were confused as to why we were there, however they always had a good crowd and the food was decent. Lots of people coming from GWU to eat there, so that indicates that prices are reasonable and quality is good. The Bistro Grilled Cheese sandwich is enough to feed at least two people - giant! There are also several restaurants in walking distance. Parking - when we first arrived, the valet lot was full, so we had to park in a garage a few blocks away. The garage was pretty pricy, but there was no other option. The remainder of the trip, the car was with valet and they were great about saving us a space and making sure the car would be out front at the time we needed it. Location - not bad at all. Diagonally across from the State Department and in between the Bosnian Embassy (for those that are interested) and a CVS; just on the edge of the GWU campus. We were in the CVS almost every day to get whatever food, drinks, etc., that we needed - its open 24/7 so very convenient. Easy walk down to Vietnam memorials & the Lincoln memorial in one direction and then about 5 or 6 blocks in the other direction to the Metro stop. We walked back at night from the Metro and had no issues - pretty much going right through the campus. One note - in the park across the street from the hotel, there are some homeless that hang out there. No eye contact and you should be fine. Other - no WiFi however you can plug your laptop right in to the free internet connection in the rooms, so it worked out. Also, all rooms have flat screen TVs, so that was nice. All in all, not a bad place to stay, especially if you are traveling with family and want to try to save some money. Would definitely consider staying here again. read more

Recently stayed here for one night, and had a great experience. Good points: - the service! The front desk staff was very helpful and friendly. She was able to let us check in early, made sure we got a spot in their garage, and was overall just very efficient and made our stay enjoyable. - very clean and well-maintained. The decor seems a bit dated, but our room was immaculately clean. - bed were quite comfortable. - within walking distance from the metro and major attractions such as the White House. We walked to the Ellipse at night and not only was it a relatively easy walk, it felt safe even at night. Downsides: - if you don't want to pay the $28 per night for parking in their garage, it would be hard to find a spot nearby. All of the street parking seems to have been 2 hour limit or permit parking. - the interior of the hotel has kind of a weird set up; we were in the second tower which involved us walking through a breezeway and a garage to get to our part of the building. -the shower had really poor water pressure and a slope in the tub, making taking a shower kind of a challenge. Overall, we had a great experience here; it was close to everything that we wanted to see while overnighting in DC. It did involve some walking, but for the price we paid it was an awesome value. This is a great hotel if you're looking for a cheap but nice place. It's like stepping back into the 1950's. The furniture it's very old. But the rooms are spacious. We loved having a kitchen was nice. The location was great too. Free wifi but crappy connection until you get down to the lobby but it's fine because it allowed us to unplug. Attached restaurant closed at 10. But CVS and liquor store are right next door. Quick walk to the metro too. Foggy Bottom has a lot of businesses nearby too. The only downside is that it's very dry in the rooms. We stayed in March 2015 and the room was very hot (even when we turned off the heat) and the view in our room was of the dumpsters. :-) but seriously you get what you pay for and this was great. read more

I had a wonderful stay here. The hotel rooms are really nice, well furnished. I wish they had an electric kettle, but they had one for the stove. The thermostat was a little hard to control. This hotel is also in a great location. DC is a great city to walk and explore on foot, so it was certainly worth the extra money to be in a hotel in a part of town that made everything walkable instead of having a rental car. read more

Booking/billing error caused my normal room rate to be charged as double!~ Over $300 for a so-so room? Really?? I've been a Marriott person for a long time and found that the State Plaza was reasonable and close to where I needed to go. I've been there a few times with minor issues but overlooked them because the price was pretty good. Now, with this insanity I'm out over $150! I don't like leaving negative feedback unless it's deserved. In this instance, I contacted the general manager and gave him an opportunity to correct this for me. He declined. I asked for a reconsideration and he declined. This property does not value at $300. It barely values at the $120+ I've paid before. It has a decent location, but realistically it's more of a days inn/red roof inn type of place. If I'm going to have to spend $300 a night I'm sure I can find something a bit more commensurate with the price. Book at your own risk. Issues that might be easily resolved are likely to be met with some lip service but no substantive action. I'll not be staying there anymore. I cannot refer anyone else stay at this place. You money is better spent elsewhere. read more

I feel like I lucked out when I found the State Plaza Hotel. I knew where I had to be at 7 AM on a Thursday and searched google for hotels near that location. State Plaza was the closest location and offered a special internet price of $130 a night. I was intrigued. I did some research and liked what I saw. I had a suite booked 10 minutes later. I arrived without my luggage (thank you airline) at 1 am. The gentleman working the night desk was very friendly and got me set up right away. He noticed I had no bags and inquired if I was expecting luggage to arrive. I was comforted by his assurances that he would see it got to me as soon as possible. The walk to my room was probably the least pleasant thing about my stay. It involved walking out side briefly, through the garage that separates the two residence towers, and then through a hallway that overwhelmingly reeked of cleaning products. Seriously, it was like a punch in the face from Mr. Clean himself. Fortunately, it was isolated to that one stretch. My room was large and clean and honestly, better in every way than I expected. It had a full kitchen, a large main room, a tiny room off the bathroom and well, the bathroom. I was impressed. Although I didn't watch much tv, the provided flatscreen came with about 50 channels. There is free broadband in each room in the form of an ethernet port. Wireless would have been nicer, but hey, it's free....unlike at other hotels. The location was great: I was able to walk to my interview in 8 minutes and the Mall in 10. Yelpers didn't seem to really like the hotel restaurant (and its prices were a little high) so I passed on trying it. Next time I need to stay in the area, State Plaza is going to be the first place I check the rates. For $130 a night, it's a deal. read more

We called the front desk and they put us in another room. We inspected that bed and found bed bugs. We cancelled our reservation and booked a new hotel because it was absolutely disgusting. I have stayed at the State Plaza a number of times now for weekend trips to DC. The hotel is conveniently located near several popular parts of the District, which makes for easy access to restaurants, tourist attractions and nightlife. Street parking is available on both sides of the hotel (the main entrance is on E Street; the back entrance on F street connects the second building), and the hotel offers valet parking that will cost you a nice chunk per day. Dining is available on site if you desire to try the fare. The hotel decor, though well-kept, shows its age, but also adds a unique charm to the building that the average chain hotel doesn't have. The staff is typically helpful and professional. If you are looking for a reasonably-priced, clean place that provides the basic amenities while you lay your head while in D.C. for a night or two, this is worth checking out! read more

The hotel is located on GW campus, which is also conveniently located near the White House and the Foggy Bottom metro. Georgetown shopping, restaurants and clubs are an easy 5 minute walk. Hotel room was huge, a bit old, was clearly an apartment at some point. Separate bedroom and kitchen (though no stove in the kitchen). Bed was comfortable. Wifi worked fine. Hotel has no ice machine. Hotel will try to charge you for the room key; I made a point of handing back the key when leaving and asking for the bill to be adjusted. I was assured it would be taken care of, but I said that no, that was fine, I'm happy to wait while an updated bill is printed. That wiped the smile off the clerk's face. I really wanted to like this place. I really did but at the end of our DC trip, I thought to myself that if I ever came back, I wouldn't stay at this hotel again. Don't get me wrong. I'm not a total snob when it comes to no frills type sleeping quarters but there are certain necessities that I absolutely require. First and foremost, it's a small hotel, but the rooms do include a kitchenette, which is something I appreciate. The thing that really didn't do it for me was the air conditioner. I turned it on and it made a loud noise but never got cold. I called the front desk and they told me that since it's an old building, the hotel runs either on all AC or all heaters -- they mentioned something about a one-way system. Since it was February, it was fairly cold outside so I'm assuming that other patrons in the hotel wanted the heater. However, it was really stuffy in the room so I was quite uncomfortable. The windows did open slightly but the problem is that at times, it was really noisy outside and with the windows being open, the noise easily penetrated into our room. Oh and did I mention that they were also doing construction at the lot next to the hotel, the side where our room was situated, so of course, our wake up call was construction noise. Definitely NOT ideal. Also, for some reason, there's a little area near the bathroom that appears to be a powder area, but it was pretty useless. I think they could've utilized that area to expand the bathroom instead. It was pretty outdated and there were a ton of lights, making the bathroom SUPER hot. Lastly, this hotel doesn't have an ice machine. As weird as it may be, I'm addicted to having ice in my drink, whether it be snowing outside. We did call the front desk and they somehow made ice for me and brought some to our room. I didn't want to be the difficult patron so I just bought bottled water from the convenience store next door the following day and made ice using the trays in the freezer. This place does get 3 stars because there's a 24-hour convenience store next door, there's a Dunkin' Donuts and Starbucks down the street, and the staff was friendly and accommodating. Stayed here Labor Day weekend and had a nice visit. The room was very spacious with a separate bedroom and kitchen. The room was also clean and the bed was comfortable. They are doing construction on the restaurant so a continental breakfast was offered which was okay. Typical toast, pastries and cold cereal. The location is interesting. The homeless tend to camp out across the street which can be a little off putting. They seemed harmless as we walked by several times without an issue. There aren't many restaurants or cafes nearby. It is right next to George Washington University so there are a few dives nearby. The hotel is within walking distance to the mall which made things convenient. All in all I would stay here again as the room was comfortable and clean! read more

Pros: Relatively affordable, close to major attractions, well maintained and clean, has kitchenette. Cons: No internet service, on the noisy side. Spent three nights here in August 2011. Many other reviews have mentioned the dated decor of this hotel but "dated" shouldn't be confused for "nonfunctional." Yes, the fixtures in the room looked like they belonged in a Smithsonian exhibit on the 1950s but everything was spotless and in good working order. The kitchenette has a cooktop, sink, and full sized refrigerator. You do have to request pots and pans or a microwave but they're brought to you promptly. There is a 24-hour CVS next door and a Trader Joe's not too far away. Beds were comfortable and bedbug free. The TV was flatscreen. The hotel is relatively close to the Foggy Bottom Metro and the west end of the Mall. I had no problem walking to both. There are three Zipcars located around the corner. The neighborhood seemed safe any time of day or night; there appeared to be a shantytown set up in the park to the south so I avoided that corner. The complex consists of a north and south building, each with their own entrance and lobby. Confusing at first but you get used to it. Either lobby can check you in and out. I didn't interact with the staff much but they seemed friendly and helpful... for the most part anyway. The biggest problem during my stay concerned internet access. There is no wireless but my room had an Ethernet cable which did not work, either the cable was bad or the building's router needed to be reset. I called the front desk twice and they assured me an engineer would be along to help but no one ever showed up. This seems to be a chronic issue with this hotel. Noise levels were also a bit above average. I couldn't hear conversations but could easily hear people stirring in other rooms and certainly heard anything going on in the corridor. It was also somewhat disconcerting that the smoke detectors were over 30 years old. Overall, if internet isn't important to you and you want to be in a clean, affordable room close to most major attractions and like the added benefit of a kitchen, this would be a good choice. But if you're not on a budget or don't have a smartphone for internet, spend the extra cash and go somewhere nicer. read more

The hotel location cannot be beaten. Blocks from Foggy Bottom and The National Mall...we walked everywhere. The staff could not have been nicer. The room was good. The lighting in the rooms could be improved my adding dimmers...we were waking each other up in the night trying to go to the bathroom. The bathroom could have used some work. We had to call the desk several times to have them come tend to the toilet, that wouldn't completely empty no matter what. The onsite cafe was lovely...and Venus our waitress was wonderful! I would stay there again for sure, they just need to make some modest upgrades and fixes and this could be a 5-Star across the board. read more

My family and I stayed here three nights. All of the staff we encountered were pleasant and helpful. The rooms where ok, we had a room with two queen beds on the 8th floor. The room had a small kitchen & a little vanity area. The hotel could use an update & some sort of complementary breakfast. Our bathroom smelled like cigarette smoke. A huge negative was the $30 +tax a day for parking. You're somewhat stuck using the hotel parking unless you fully understand the city's parking schudule and regulations. The guy who checked us in told us that the closest parking garage was two blocks away and there was not in and out privileges. He said parking on the street was too complicated to explain & most people end up getting a ticket anyways. I'm not sure how much of what he said is true but, I ended up paying just over $100 dollars extra in parking fees!!! read more

Wow. I must disagree with everything I've read. The rooms were only ok for the price and a bit out of the way unless you're mainly there for gov't meetings. I stayed there for work and they didn't have breakfast for room service and the food they do offer for room service is extremely limited. The hotel is pretty large and strange to navigate (talked with a couple of others who agreed) and - with the exception of those at the front desk - if you ask anyone in the hotel for information on anything, no one seems to have an answer. read more

I agree this is a really nice hotel. The hotel staff is so nice and the location is great because you're not too close to George Washington University but close enough not to dread the walk to the Foggy Bottom Metro. Though the room wasn't the most up to date in terms of style, the beds are comfortable and it has all the basic amenities you expect and more. (especially in the kitchen!) Overall this is a nice hotel and I definitely recommend this place. read more
