I had been to this location previously and really enjoyed it so I was excited to go back. Appetizer: my friend and I both ordered the deviled Truffle stuffed eggs with pancetta and crispy leaks. This dish is $5 and is one egg per person. The egg was super rubbery and the filling was crazy salty. They taste like their made earlier in the day and sit in the fridge. Neither of us cared for the flavor of the filling. The good news: we both ordered the burger and it was delicious, I would definitely get this dish again. We heard Michael J. Fox was going to be at the Smith Rafael Film Center in person to promote his movie "Still" so we chose State Room due to its close proximity to the film center. To my pleasant surprise, the food was excellent. We ordered Shroomin Wood Fired Pizza, Parmesan & Herb Garlic Fries, and Khao San Thai Salad. The pizza & fries were 5/5. The salad flavorwise was fine, just needed something cooling to go with the fries. The Alter State (Trappist Style Belgian Ale) was excellent. With an early afternoon eye appointment at Kaiser on 3rd Street, I decided to take the SMART train from Novato, arriving in San Rafael at about 10:30 AM. I then took a hike up the Robert Dollar Trail. Even though it was the end of February, it was still way too hot, so by the time I returned to 4th Street, I was ready for a meal and a brewski. Walking down Downtown San Rafael's primary thoroughfare, I came across this establishment. Even if my first impression was that of the host shooing away a homeless person, ostensibly due to the smell of his shopping cart, the covered outdoor area looked enticing enough, if for no other reason than to people watch. And yes, it's fun to watch various characters wander up and down the street. But the menu itself was robust enough for almost anybody to enjoy - for me it was a Hazy IPA, supplemented by the Kale-ifornia pizza. We had a little rocky start as I booked online, and noted we had a guide dog to accommodate for one of the disabled guests. Table no. 1 was a high traffic area, not very conducive for the dog. Located in downtown San Rafael. You'll find a variety of eateries and this is one of them. It wasn't great, but not horrible. They didn't have very many of their own beers on tap, but we did try the Commander Stout on Nitro and a fall back choice from another California brewery. Both were good, the food was somewhat of a disappointment though considering the menu sounds enticing. Mac and cheese and peas, was creamy, but bland. Had lunch with three friends today (11/3) and found it quite good with excellent service and a nice (although somewhat expensive) menu. I had the Cubano sandwich with a side salad which was excellent and I would highly recommend it. I couldn't eat the whole sandwich, so I'm having the rest of it for tomorrow's lunch!
