Last night we walked out of SSG for the first time after waiting almost 20 min for a waiter to take our order after we were brought water. Overall this is our fourth bad experience with service here. We have been completely forgotten by the staff on two separate occasions, once on their rooftop and once for delivery. It is a shame because otherwise I really like SSG. Good food and friendly (although often forgetful) staff that is close to home. I hope they can fix their issues soon so we can come back. read more

My four stars is mainly based on atmosphere and service. The food was probably a solid 3 stars. Although this place is a diner, it really has the atmosphere of a mid-range restaurant. It's extremely pleasant, especially with the nice and non-tacky Thanksgiving decor up right now. The parking lot is very small and cramped, so I'd recommend looking for street parking rather than getting caught in there as people try to pull out and others wait to take their spaces.. The service was quite good and friendly. The food was OK. I had the spanakopita (spinach pie) and he had the moussaka (kind of like Greek lasagna). While the Greek salads were quite tasty, the entrees themselves were just OK. I will say this is better spinach pie than I've had at other diners, though. I would like to come back here and try their pizza and sautees. They have a HUGE menu of sautees, especially chicken ones. And the gelato bar and dessert selection looked pretty good... would like to give some of that stuff a try as well. They also have a Starbucks-style coffee counter. read more

Truthfully, I would've given a 3.5 if I had the option. I was ready to write this place off forever, but I was really impressed with the way the business owner responded to my review. I have since been back a handful of times, and I've ordered take-out probably as many times. I have never written a review on any restaurant or establishment but after my experience tonight I needed to speak up. I've been going to State Street for the past 10 years. My experience with takeout during the pandemic was not good but I believe in supporting local business. Tonight for the first time in a year I decided to eat in at State Street. I ordered an Italian dish. The portions are smaller and the prices are higher, I get all that, times are different. When my Italian dish came out I asked the waitress who was pleasant to please bring me a piece of bread. Her response was we don't do that anymore. I asked for the manager/owner to come over and he did. I politely asked him if I could have a piece of Bread with my dinner. He said no we don't offer that and walked away. I found this place using yammer and while it's listed as a diner, it feels more like a full on, mid priced restaurant. The menu is huge like a diner, from breakfast to pizza and i liked the combos offered. I had a salad and burger combo. The burger was great! very big and and great, real roll. The Caesar salad was average and actually too cold -- almost icy. The restaurant is large and the background noise is pretty loud. You can still talk but it's a high volume, high ceiling dining room. Was at State Street for brunch this past Sunday...no wait at Noon for two people. Tried the French Toast with Bacon...it was good, not great. The French Toast was nothing special, and the bacon was soggy not crispy. I was also a little disappointed that the syrup was not served in a bottle, but in single serve plastic containers. The highlight of my meal was the Apple Crumb Cake I couldn't resist trying after seeing it in the glass case when I walked in. Outstanding! I'll definitely give State Street another shot. Expensive, but great service and a nice atmosphere. Its hard to call this a "diner", which is perhaps why it doesn't label itself as such, especially given the prices. But while the prices are high, the amount of food you get will exceed that-- be prepared to share. Paninis are all very good, as well as the sweet potato fries. read more

Food is ok. Not bad. Service SUCKS! My boyfriend ordered a wrap which contained mushrooms. We specifically asked for NO MUSHROOMS. More than half way thru eating it, he found a mushroom. We called the waitress over and told her that there was mushrooms. Her response was " well it was only a few pieces" excuse me!!?? I then asked for the manager who also looked at it as if it's was no big deal. I told he needs to take that wrap off of the bill. This used to be Willy's Diner I believe. Made a mistake and ordered the fried calamari; chewy, rubbery humongous rings. If you ever had bad calamari you may empathize with me. Made a bigger mistake and ordered some kind of deli combo. I was forgiving (before I took a bite). I was not expecting Katz, 2nd Ave or Carnegie, I knew what lane I was in. The pastrami was dry, tough and not cut properly so it was like twine and the corned beef was rubber like; they both had grill marks as if they were treated like bacon. I sent it back for different slices; at the suggestion of my waitress. It came back worse, so I gave up. As a rule, I don't send food back. I still tipped her, left the food, paid at the register and walked out. My previous experiences here were so different. Maybe it was a bad day for them. I come here for the burgers it is the best I have ever tasted. You have to get it deluxe so that you can get the cheese lettuce tomatoes fries and the best pickle ever. Terrible experience. Got quoted 25 minutes for two sandwiches with fries waited an hour. Both orders were incorrect the fries were cold and extremely salty. When we went to take the food back the manager was very nonchalant about the situation did not apologize for the mistake & then quotes us another 25 minutes for two sandwiches, a beef sandwiches with cheese and a cheesesteak sandwich. Just came from this diner and it was the most terrible service, I've ever received. The waiter did not attend to check in on us once, and I had to ask the busboy for condiments, that our waiter failed to deliver. Not to mention, the waiter needed to be reminded of what I ordered, at the 11th hour before delivery to the table. We're talking about a party of 2 people in total. We just got up and walked to the counter to pay our check, again, because our waiter never checked in, asked if perhaps we wanted coffee/dessert. Lovely 24-hr diner with its own free parking lot. Looks like it is brand new, but our waitress said it was remodeled four years ago. The interior feels as much like a sports bar as a diner; but not in a bad way. A *million* things to choose from on the menu. Service was quick and friendly. Two of us had panini sandwiches: mine stuffed with zucchini, carrots (!) and cheese; my bride's, portobello mush and mozzarella. Each was so huge and overstuffed that we only finished half of each one. Son had grilled cheese and ham, w/chicken and rice soup, very good. The bill for 3 was $28 plus tip. I went to State Street today, 12/29/18. It was my buddies birthday. We have been eating at State Street for numerous years. Today the food and service was terrible. My buddy ordered pancakes, turkey bacon and eggs. He received pork bacon, pork sausages and NO eggs. The waitress took back his order and brought out pancakes with under cooked turkey bacon. The manager was called over, he stated, " I saw the bacon was undercooked, but I was embarrassed to say something ". At this point we became irate and stated to the manager , " if you saw the food was undercooked, why couldn't you as a manager say something to us". The manager would not even apologize for his cooks mistake and just walked away. I believe we will venture to another spot for now on, and simply avoid State Street Grill/Diner.... read more
