AFTER

I did not know what to expect going in to this process, mostly because what I was hoping to do isn't a common thing people do. I recently bought my first apartment but one thing I wasn't really wild about was the very dark (almost black) glossy granite tile floors throughout the place. I wanted it to feel a bit warmer and more inviting. But I wasn't sure I was ready for the commitment or the price tag of ripping the tile out completely and putting in new floors. A friend had suggested honing the shiny floors down--essentially grinding/sanding them to give them a rougher finish. I called a few places to get estimates, and Stonework's estimate wasn't the cheapest but it wasn't the highest either. But I got the impression that even though this wasn't a process they've done a lot of, they had a pretty good idea of how it could work and were pretty confident it could be done and get me the result I was looking for. They described the grey color the tiles would likely become, and that was more or less what I was looking for--maybe even better than I was hoping for. I will say--the original estimate was that it would take two--maybe three- days to complete the work. It ended up being a full week, 7 days. But from the get go they were very clear, even if it took longer, it would not affect the price. (And they were true to their word on that--it did not change the price at all.) The entire process was for the most part very smooth. They did a couple sample tiles in certain locations on the floor to see what different sanding grits would look like in terms of color and finish and the differences in types of sealer to finish it with. Victor the owner personally stopped by I think every day (sometimes twice) to make sure things were going ok. He even came back after the job was "done" to smooth out one small spot that looked a bit TOO rough for my liking. (I'm not sure if this is common or if this was because this job was a bit of a different type of request and he wanted to make sure it was looking ok--either way, it was nice to see. And reassuring, because you could tell he wanted this to look right.) In the end the floors overall look even better than I had pictured in my head. They were lighter than I'd hoped (thanks to going with a much smaller grit) and they have a nice--almost raw, unfinished--look to them now. Every single corner and edge is not "perfect" but also--that wasn't what I was going for here. I wanted them to look raw. And they have almost a cement type of look to them now. The whole place is so much cozier than before. And again, even though the process took far longer than anticipated (due to the super hard granite that required a lot of work to grind down), they never changed the price once--what they quoted me is what I paid. Overall I think this company is a very safe bet--they care about the finished product, and they wanted to make sure I was happy.

Victor and Eddie go above and beyond!

The first company told us that the floors were too old & worn and that the only way we could refresh them was to rip out the original floors and replace them with modern panels. We mentioned how sad we were to lose our original floorboards to a friend and they suggested we reach out to Adam at Wood Vitalize. I'm glad we did! Adam came to the house and, immediately after saying hello, got down on his hands and knees to give them a close look. He helped us to pick an option that would protect the floors and give them some new life, without sanding off the character they'd gotten over the last 90 years. He also helped ensure the rose inlay in the original floors wouldn't get destroyed with his process (other flooring companies had told it was unsaveable). Wood Vitalize's quote for the work was reasonable and they even replaced a few floorboards that had gone rotten underneath the radiator without charge (thanks again!). They were able to do all the floors in our 3/2 townhouse in one day (arrived on time, stayed late until it was done). I'm very pleased with their work and owe our friend who referred them a big thank you! So I'm passing it forward. If you've got floors with history and you want to keep them don't let someone talk you into ripping them out until you talk to Adam!

Back then I decided not to do my bedroom or my kitchen but soon came to regret it. I recently decided my bedroom floors needed to be brought up to the same standard as the rest of my apartment. I was also sick of the ugly tile floors in my kitchen. Fast forward to a week ago when John's crew worked magic to upgrade the rest of my apartment floors (see pics attached). They did the same process I described above for my bedroom and added vinyl flooring to my kitchen. I highly recommend NYC Floor Pro and of all the contractors I've used during my current renovation, I was super pleased with the professionalism all around from dealing with John to working with his crew. I greatly appreciated how considerate and pleasant the crew was and appreciated how well they cleaned up after themselves (since I had painters coming in the next day). John was also super helpful in getting me all the documents I needed to submit a comprehensive alteration agreement that was approved quickly. Don't hesitate to go with these guys as I can attest my old floors (installed in 2017) still look brand new and everyone still compliments them.

If you've worked with a lot of folks in the trades, this is very much the exception to the rule, and as such I was pleasantly surprised. Lou quickly got back to me with a very reasonable quote, and once we agreed on the details and a date, we were off and running. We had some damage and discoloration on our white oak floors, and we wanted to sand and refinish them. Lou was helpful as we got together the paperwork my building required to get it done. On the agreed upon day, his guys showed up on time, and while they weren't the excellent communicators that he is (their English wasn't great), they were conscientious and obviously knew what they were doing. Lou said the work would take 1-2 days, and they were done in just a day. We had a minor hiccup after the fact, but Lou immediately investigated the issue, and handled it well. I'll definitely be going straight to Buono's next time I need any flooring work done.
