Pretty good, not outstanding. Anyway, we had: almond tempura, Monkey Stick, Saba nigiri, and one of their specialty rolls with salmon, asparagus, and some other crazy business. This is definitely not a traditional sushi place, but in my opinion, rolls have their place alongside the nigiri. Sometimes I just want cream cheese, avocado and eel jammed into some rice, ya know? Overall, the meal was tasty! Almond tempura was unique and flavorful, but the shrimp had a slightly odd texture. Monkey Stick was pretty dang good; can't go wrong with mayo-sauce and tempura fried seaweed! Saba was okay; again, this is a roll place already! Everything mentioned in the other reviews about the ambiance was true except the service: the waiter was fine, but it was noisy and there were flies. By far my favorite sushi bar in San Diego. Only complaint about this place is that the wait can be extremely in the summer time, but goes by quickly drinking sake and Sapporo. Amazing! Truly a great find. The parking is in the back, but you can park on the street too. Portions are big and food is very good. You may find yourself in a long line tho, because this is what it is: amazing. :) Rather small, tightly packed tables -- you decide if your kids can handle sitting down. I actually quite like Station Sushi. However, they are overpriced for what you get and inconsistent. One of the sushi chefs - the main guy - is great when he is focused. He does good sashimi cuts and pretty decent nigiri. The others are alright. However, I do feel a lot of the artistry is missing. Their hamachi kama and salmon kama are worth trying for a lunch special. Its a lot of food for a lot cheaper than their other meals. I live within walking distance to Station Sushi which makes it an easy stop to go to. The sushi is great and the shrimp fried rice is pretty dreamy as well! The employees are nice and accommodating. Just moved to Solana and immediately on the hunt for a local sushi spot. I really wanted to love station sushi but sadly I did not fall in love. Read many reviews about the protein roll and I'm a huge fan of no rice sushi rolls. So I ordered the protein roll and the Maui Wowie. Both rolls (no rice) were meh but it was hard to judge because there was waaaay too much imitation crab. The answer to a no rice roll is NOT overload with imitation crab. Bit of a cop out to me. A delish no rice roll is possible. Also ordered a spicy scallop hand roll. Decent but not wowed. Yes it's good if you don't mind the food falling apart a little more than the white sticky rice. Health is a battlefield....or was it love? This art from the ocean is chock FULL of all sorts of fish....crab (make sure to order the real crab for a little more $)...soy paper....and no rice!!! I keep coming back to Station Sushi in Solana Beach because it rocks! I've tried so many places around San Diego county. Off the top of my head: Ono Sushi, Sushi Ota, Eda-Mami, Zensei Sushi, Sushi Deli, Benihana, Tadashi Sushi, Kabuki Sushi, Sushiya, Harney Sushi, Masuo's, etc., etc. None ever seem to be as satisfying as Station. They have a great happy hour which includes the "monkey stick," one of my faves from the joint. Everything I've had has been awesome with great presentation and flavors. One thing I make a point to do at each sushi place I try is to see how the restaurant treats their California rolls, which people perceive as the lowest common denominator. I have this theory that if the California rolls are worth ordering on their own, then everything else will be fantastic. Station Sushi is the only sushi joint I've been to that passes this test. Best spot I've found in a long while for great sushi at reasonable prices! That is what sets this place apart honestly. I realize that better sushi exists out there but I'm not ready to pay 30+ bucks a roll to have fish plucked from the ocean by virgins delivered in gold wrapping paper I guess. Sorry to say, the two times I have gone the service is just ok. They try hard. Gotta give that to them. My order was forgotten/not even submitted to the chef. They were very prompt in getting it to me so I could eat with the rest of my table. Nothing was offered for this slip up. I wouldn't boast about this place. They dont take your order for a while and the sushi takes as long as it might take me to fish and de scale a live salmon to finally arrive at your table - I think they're pretty understaffed. but oh man.... I work up the street so I come here for lunch every now and then. Lunch hours are definitely not as busy as the evening, and I can come in and sit wherever I choose. I've come during dinner time/happy hour and while crowded, did not have to wait for a seat at the bar. When I first started coming, service was sometimes a little slow, but for the most part they are friendly and treat you well, especially if they know you're a regular. The food is good and sushi here is very fresh, very tasty, and if you like rolls they've got some interesting creations. I usually go for the salmon teriyaki lunch special or the sushi lunch special. The prices are typical for sushi restaurants. If you're looking for a quiet, upscale or traditional Japanese type of restaurant, this would not be the place for you. It fits more into the Solana Beach, beach house/bar vibe like the rest of the restaurants along the strip, and attracts that type of people. Ate here for the first time recently after eating at the one in Bird Rock. Apparently they operate independently of each other and have some owners in common but the food was equally as great. We really liked the 911 roll so if you like a little bit of kick you should definitely give it a try. Servers, manager, and chefs have terrific attitudes. Very customer first kind of place. They are asking you if you want refills, etc. before you have to look for anyone. However, the food is heavy for sushi (rice heavy, lots of frying even in sushi options, etc.). In terms of flavor, is eh. Fish flavor has "fishy" taste, but not in a good sushi flavor type of way. Shumai looked like something from supermarket; not a traditional type; and it lacked any real flavor. Could not find the shrimp in it. Happy hour is cheap. So, overall, if you want something edible in a place with great attitude, then this is decent. If you are looking for great sushi taste, then not here. We went here on a Saturday night and got seated right away. We tried a few rolls and they were delicious and fresh. The crunchy shrimp roll was really good. The portions were generous. This sushi bar has a chill, laid back atmosphere and good music. My #3 in SD (tied with Taka downtown); probably such a relaxed atmosphere due to all the Brazilians that work there.
