This was maybe more of a 3.5 star experience. I stopped in on a Sunday afternoon and picked out 4 donuts. The place had 2 customers silently sitting and maybe working on their computers but the whole place felt sterile and lifeless. I wasn't greeted and stood at the counter for a few minutes while the lone employee arranged items until I finally asked if I could order. I wanted to sample a variety- so I got an apple fritter, a snickerdoodle donut, a buttermilk old fashioned, and a blueberry Pączki. The apple fritter was the best of those 4. The snickerdoodle was just a traditional cinnamon sugar donut. The base was a bit dry yet also tasted oily. The buttermilk old fashioned had a similar greasy flavor and not the tang I'd expect from this type of donut. The Pączki was just a minimally filled jelly donut...and the dough was very greasy. Normally, the dough is more bready and has a more rich flavor. The ones I've always eaten in the past are heavily filled. This place seems like it has potential but it just lacks the quality or personality I'm looking for in a local gem. Nothing was awful but nothing was great either. read more

A+ staff and super cute spot located right in downtown Knoxville! It was super easy to find street parking on a week morning and I enjoyed walking around with my coffee, exploring. They use Intelligentsia as their espresso roast, which I prefer over the other smaller coffee chains like La Colombe. On road trips I always try to scout out the best donuts, and I'm truly a sucker for quality old-fashioneds. When I saw Status dough had a variety of old-fashioned flavors AND good espresso, I immediately routed there. I got the coffee and chocolate covered old-fashioneds. Of the two, I'd recommend the coffee one more as it's more dense in flavor and texture. The chocolate one was weirdly lacking flavor, the donut cake was pretty dry, and I couldn't get through half of it. Wasn't worth the calories. They offer vegan donuts here and a variety of milk alternatives, including oat. It's a small place but the front area has enough seats for a couple small groups. They have cake donuts and original doughy donuts. If I came back I'd probably try the buttermilk old fashioned as it looked a lot more flavorful. If you like doughy donuts all I can tell you is they looked really fluffy and almost too perfect to eat - so maybe this place would be great for trying those! Super fluffy and moist. They have some fun flavors like raspberry and orange creamsicle. As well as the classics like chocolate and vanilla frosted, cinnamon rolls and classic butter cake doughnuts. Loads. The OG location is a great spot to pop in, grab some delectables, roll out. There is seating, but I always seem to head out right after. The downtown location seems to have these little pockets. Working for myself, I'm always looking for a spot to remote work, or, more importantly, have meetings. The OG location is good for that. The downtown location is GREAT for that. But they also maintain the option to pop in, pop out. I expected the icing to be cloyingly sweet but it has a wonderful complexity to it. Pilot gas stations have recently released a new coffee system wherein automated machines use percolation to brew coffees for the customer upon following prompts on a touchscreen. That coffee is much better than what I received at Status Dough. I think that the only reason this establishment has more than four stars on Yelp is due to the fact that there is a starvation in the US for excellent bakeries, and frankly, most of us wouldn't know what fresh bread was if you handed it to us- nonetheless fresh donuts will rave about anything that made in the same month that we are eating it. The interior of the downtown location of Status Dough has one thing going for it, and only one thing, it is downtown. The donuts were sitting on the counter unlit. If I had to guess they were made at another location and brought there. Their quality was evidenced by the number of people seeking to buy them. There was no one there except for an older woman reading on a tablet in the corner. I do not recommend spending an afternoon in such a lifeless place. Knoxville has the fortune to be the home of several excellent bakeries who frequently sell out- if you are looking for a comfortable place to go with excellent pastries I might recommend Wildlove Bakehouse or Pasyan Bagels- who do other pastries as well. Also, a new donut shop has recently opened on North Broadway called "The Donut Shop" who do excellent work and ought be supported. At least with these locations you may have a comfortable chair and something made with passion. read more
