This review is for my recent visit to Stauf's, but I've been to this place twice and have liked it very much both times! This place has a nice vibe on Sunday morning and what I liked about it (other than the vibe) is that the food is delicious, but very affordable! We got the BYO sandwich, the avocado toast, and the bacon-chaddar scone, all of which were delicious (if you don't believe me, just look at the pictures!). A hidden gem. The help are so helpful and pleasant not at all pretentious. I'll make the trip to here or the North Market from the airport on my way to Dayton. I love Staufs. Not only can you order their coffee and baked good online, they also have limited grocery items if you don't want to brave the stores. Going to be honest, I don't recommend going on the weekend at this point. I ordered my latte online on Saturday around lunch and was given a pickup time of close to an hour later. Yikes! Good news for us, that means we (hopefully) don't need to worry about them staying in business if wait times are crazy long. (Going to keep telling myself that so I stop worrying.) You guessed it, big crowds in front of Staufs waiting for their order. Most people were keeping a distance. You get a text when your order is ready so there's really no need to stand around, but there's also not really anywhere to go when everything is closed. First time to this location today. Huge coffee shop in the heart of Grandview. My wife suggested we go here today instead of our usual. She had memories of her and her friend going here to get her friends dad fresh hazelnut coffee beans. I got an almond joy and my wife got a milky way. Both were great. The selection of coffee beans to buy to grind is great and definitely on my to do list to buy next time. Prices are competitive with other coffee shops. Staff is great (one employee asked my wife about her hoodie for the Days of the Dead horror convention). They were packed but it didn't take long to get our drinks and be on our way. read more

I officially love coming to Staufs! The environment is always so vibrant and fun, it's a great place to both relax with friends and talk, and study or get work done. I'm not a huge coffee drinker, but needed a boost. So Kaysha (sorry if I spelled it wrong) was such a cool barista, fun to talk to, and helped me choose a drink - honey lavender iced latte. She even made it to my liking. The wrap was also amazing, the egg was cooked perfectly and it was so good (and I was that hungry) that I wanted another one when I was done. I worked at a Cup O Joe in 2008. When that store closed, friends I worked with eventually transferred to Stauf's, as the two companies became one. I'm glad Stauf's is still plugging along - a true press-tamp-pour coffee shop that keeps espresso alive. This store always seems to have customers. From the usual to-go young professionals, to the order clientele that have time to sit and linger, this coffee shop caters to all. Plenty of coffee beans to buy whole, or they'll happily grind it for you. And I like how the eating section is separate from the grinding section; keeps the flow of customers moving. I sincerely love authentic coffee shops, and I'm so glad Stauf's has been able to hold strong in today's fast-paced culture! read more

Stauf's is definitely a fan-favorite coffee shop in the Columbus area. Beside the variety of coffee choices, the cafe offers a good amount of seating (outside too--if warm outside). The location makes it a great spot in downtown Grandview to stop in, hang out with the locals, and continue exploring nearby shops. Due to the location and popularity, Stauf's can get busy throughout the day. If you're looking for a place that is peaceful and quiet, I may point you in another direction. Been coming here forever, but recently they started blasting kpop and other international club music at a deafening volume. I'm guessing the staff is in control of the music and is doing it intentionally to keep people from congregating. Well, it's working. Last few times I've been on the weekend it's 1/3 or less capacity and the patio (refuge from the club scene inside) is packed. I've heard lots of people comment. It's definitely not just me lol. You can't have a conversation if you wanted to, can't concentrate to read or do whatever people used to do--eat brunch, for one. They used to be packed all weekend, would be hard to find a table. I'll start by saying that their staff consistently make it clear to you that they don't want to be there. Also, I'm extremely disappointed in my online order experience. I ordered a sandwich to be picked up at a specific time. I stood by the online order pickup spot for 10 minutes watching people come and go. The employees all saw me standing there and never said anything. Finally, I went to the counter to ask about my order. It was just sitting there on the table that whole time! I saw at least three employees go up to my order, look at it and walk away. To make things worse, when the employee handed it to me, he didn't even say anything, just didn't care. Get the hash! I usually switch up my breakfast order, but here I stick with the hash. You can pick your toast, I get the rosemary and you can pick red skins or seweet potatoes. The hash itself is mixed with red peppers, onions and mushrooms topped with two sunny side up eggs. Do: add bacon, it melts in your mouth, it's like really good bacon that I accidentally think about or talk about like every day. Just get it. Don't: add avocado, you get two slices for like $1. That's less than 1/6 of an avo and you can get an entire avo for a buck at Kroger. Not worth it. Try a hot drink. My personal favorite are the teas, you make you own tea bag here! I have had a lot of the coffee drinks as well, the buckeye is always a safe bet, but it's a coffee house and this place is brimming with amazing beans so be adventurous. read more

They are all attracted to your rich coffees and teas, and your spacious abode. Unfortunately, I'm just not that into you. It shouldn't come as a surprise. You had to have seen my car at Grandview Grind and Collin's and at several brothels in town, Starbucks, I am ashamed to admit. And while I am confessing things, I have been seeing your sister store, the one in the German Village. Yep, I've been there. . . several times. Now don't be sad, you have plenty of suitors, there's plenty of fish in our landlock sea. I'll talk up your attributes: you have flavorable coffee, and well made caps though the ice mix I had our last date was sub-par, I guess no ones perfect. You are so popular you even sell beans, you have an entire seperate checkout for them. Your body is fine, a classic cafe look with dark wooden skin and artsy appeal. You give yourself to the community, serving your java found many places in town. You'd be a great person to bring home to mamma. Before I ever looked on Yelp for Stauf's, I knew it would be one of those places with hundreds of reviews (I'll be #93 :-). Why? Because it's the sort of place that engenders loyalty and a following. It has a large retail side, with beans and coffee/tea paraphernalia galore. It has extensive seating both inside and out, and every single type of person from all walks of life frequent it. There's the punk with a mohawk studying for finals. There's the awkward couple on their first Match.com date. And look - over there - the girl who's probably catching up on her weekly Yelping. Can I say anything that hasn't been said about Stauf's? No. Other than it made my few hours in Columbus even more pleasant than I expected. On a recent visit I had the pleasure of talking with Tom Stauf, the man who started it all, while he was finishing up a batch of roasting coffee beans. (Gotta have a great nose!) He explained that he no longer owns this amazing caffeine-delivery system, but that he successfully avoided selling out to that Big Seattle Chain which apparently wanted the location Badly. Small quantities of beans are roasted here a couple times a week so you truly can stock up with stuff that's only hours out of the Probat roaster. Stauf has a big warehouse elsewhere where they do the large-quantity roasting. About $20/pound. Sign up for their coffee club if you like your fix to be delivered regularly by the USPS. Expect a grungy college coffeehouse feel - a large place with rickety wood tables jammed into every corner, indifferent lighting, lots of wobbly patio tables outside, no leather chairs nor fancy designer stuff on the walls here. Bring your coffee purist friends here, not people who need glitzy-shiny-corporate coffee. Recently de-cluttered the front of the coffee-supplies area to make more room for the laptop & book-toting crowd to sit. read more

Stauf's as a coffee house is fantastic. I LOVE the atmosphere, it's nice and big, with an impressive amount of outdoor seating as well. That being said, it can be a challenge to find a seat during peak coffee shop hours, so be prepared for that and no matter what time of day, it's virtually impossible to find an outlet. Maybe it's their secret way of making sure people don't squat all day so everyone has a change to hang out? They have a retail shop on one side and the coffee shop on the other, with tables to dine or work at throughout. The staff is always very nice and welcoming, laid back and often will strike up a conversation. If you want to start getting serious about coffee and treat yourself to the real deal, they can hook you up with the right apparatus (french press, drip, whatever), help you select your beans and then grind them up for you, to ensure a superior at-home coffee experience. Foodwise, I used to come here for brunch a lot and the omelettes never disappoint. More recently, I tried a few other things and wasn't as impressed. The barley salad was incredibly bland, basically like eating a bowl of oatmeal without any other flavors. That doesn't mean it was bad, but it was a bigger helping than it looked like, and I was pretty over it a few bites in. The breakfast burrito (veggie) was mostly scrambled eggs that were very dense and overpowered the whole thing. They weren't light or fluffy and I wouldn't have enjoyed them as a side by themselves either. My boyfriend ordered the pancakes and they were beautiful and by the way they vanished, delicious too. I always go for the Oregon chai which I happen to enjoy very much, but at another coffee shop that will remain unnamed, there was some putting-down of Oregon chai, causing me to realize it's a standard product used at many stores. The barista promised me a "spicier" chai than Oregon, and he was right, it was very good. But if I'm at Stauf's, I'm definitely not going to complain about their Oregon stuff - it still hits the spot. Love this place, especially on a sunny weekend morning outside. I come here to work sometimes because of the ample seating and outlets. The coffee is good and and the only time it disappointed me was getting sugar free flavoring. My fault. The one time I want food there's multiple items that aren't available on the "full menu served" from 8am-3pm... And we came at 1pm. No avocados for toast, no bread for the club, no soup of the day. Why bother even having the menu up on the wall then? The chicken salad sandwich I ended up with was just half a sandwich, bland, and not worth $9. This is another one of the many places in Grandview that I essentially lived next to but never actually used until years later after I had moved to Upper Arlington. So, a missed opportunity then. The shop is split into two basic areas-- a coffee roasting/bean selling side and a coffee brewing/restaurant side. I do remember walking in a few years ago in my Grandview days, entering on the coffee roasting side and seeing 4 guys cupping newly roasted beans and then discussing the taste using fancy words usually reserved for wine. I felt intimidated, turned around and went to the Panera a few doors down, bought a mocha and walked home. What I didn't appreciate at the time was this place has a great wealth of knowledge for folks like me who are really getting into some of the finer details of coffee. The whole establishment also has a very lived in feel with lots of folks who look like regulars. I've now realized there's no reason to be intimidated and I missed out some darn good coffee. They have the usual MidOhio coffee drink suspects--buckeye, caramel mocha, etc... in warm or frozen options... freshly roasted of course. There's also the option of a pour over ground from various beans. My wife and I recently had breakfast/brunch at Stauf's and can attest that the veggie omelet is pretty darn good, too. read more

First impression ... one of the largest coffee shops I have seen. Steady flow of patrons purchasing the favorite cup o' joe or signature espresso for a weekday afternoon. Available parking is either at the meters on the street (which can be a challenge to find an open spot as well as maneuver) or the free parking lot behind the building. I had no problem finding a space in the parking lot behind the building although I suspect peak hours could be problematic. When I walked into Stauf's, there seemed to be someone at every inside table staring at their laptops. They were working away or checking their social media. Noise level was a steady buzz, but not distracting. What was really nice was the available outside tables on the sidewalk. It was a great day to sit outside, relax and watch the world go by. Large chalkboards above the counter display drink and food options. Chalkboards stretch the width of the building. Food items at one end and drink options at the opposite. One person worked taking orders while one barista was fixing the drinks. Ordering felt pretty transactional and impersonal. They knew me by what I ordered. Didn't even ask for a name for my order. I ordered the almond joy specialty drink. My drink was more like a subtle hot chocolate than any thing else. Did not taste any almond or coconut flavors. I ended up getting an everything bagel after first ordering an asiago, then a jalapeño asiago, then a sesame bagel--THEY WERE OUT OF ALL OF THOSE. This is a relatively large coffee shop in the middle of a very nice neighborhood. A group of us came here to study, and this has proven to be a good spot for that. The coffee is great! It's probably one of the best ones I've had in Columbus. The place itself has a lot of character, and I've never been to anywhere quite like this. It's a nice place for studying, reading, or first dates. The free wifi works well even though we are sitting all the way at the entrance. The food here is good. I had the veggie omelet. It tastes spectacular. The muffins are a little bit on the dry side so I think we will skip that next time. I love how the tea works here. You are given a cup of hot water then sent to the wall of teas. All teas are loose-leaf, and you make your own tea bag. They have a nice selection. Some of the teas so seem like they have set in the jar a little bit longer than others. But we definitely spent a long time just smelling each jar before picking our own tea out. Stauf's is the closest coffee shop to where we live. We frequently walk to Stauf's in the morning (or afternoon) for some coffee and we buy our overpriced beans here weekly. Every time we do, we are disappointed. Cashiers are almost never friendly, we often feel like it is a burden that we are there. The tables are never clean to sit at. AND coffee is so hit or miss. I could order a vanilla latte the same way 50 times and it will taste different every time. I have spent years studying at Stauf's. Always buying a coffee or two, bringing lunch and hanging out for the entire day. This has never been an issue, until this week, apparently you're unable to bring outside food in now ??? People hype Stauf's up for being a great place, but maybe we should all realize how they actually do not care about the consumers. We should all start supporting local business' who CARE, are NICE, and are CONSISTENT. They want us in their doors! Stauf's does not. read more

My boyfriend and I have long been coming here for the great selection of coffee beans, but we've never stayed and enjoyed a cup or two. We've been trying to go out more on weekend mornings, mostly to coffee shops or bakeries, because breakfast is usually cheaper and we like to be lazy and read the day away. Today, we picked Staufs for our hangout. Firstly, even on a busy Saturday morning, it was pretty easy to find a seat. We started with some coffee. I had a Buckeye latte. It was rich and frothy in tip and overall delicious. It wasn't too heavy on the peanut butter or chocolate flavors either, which was good. My boyfriend had a double latte and was pretty satisfied with it. We also had some hot apple cider with lunch and that was the best cider I've ever had. I know they don't make it there, but it was perfect for a chilly fall day. We both had sandwiches for lunch. I had the BLT and I was a bit disappointed because the menu said it was a pork belly BLT, but the girl taking our order said it was just a regular BLT now. I wish I would have gotten something else now, but there's always next time. My boyfriend had the grilled Cuban sandwich, which I tried and it was super yummy. It was ham, pulled pork, swiss cheese, mustard, and pickles. It was a great mix of salty pork and spicy mustard and sour pickles. Awesome. We both had the french fries, which were very thick cut and they were good, but just a little greasy. They were covered in lots of fresh herbs that were tasty and came with garlic aioli(which is just fancy mayo) but that was the best part. All in all, this is a solid place to relax on a weekend morning, have a cup of coffee, a bite to eat, and enjoy some good company. This will be a repeat on our list for sure. read more

Is it me or is it Stauf's that have become stagnant? I would have normally, several years ago, given Stauf's a higher rating with a little bit more excitement. I find Stauf's just real blase, real lackluster these days. In today's world of wonderfully amazing coffee roasters that have opened up opportunities and excitement in all areas of coffees and with destinations for fun, enjoyment and excitement I don't feel that with Stauf's. So therefore, I find Stauf's on Grandview Avenue as a place to go to meet a friend or to have a computer and work on a project only. It is just overdone it's blah and not exciting any longer. Stauf's in German Village is definitely the only option because Starbucks in German Village is definitely not worth wasting your money on. So if you are in German Village in Walking you might as well walk in to stop and grab something and stay focused on your walk but it's no longer that fun exciting vibrant location that it used to be. Stauf's at the North Market is a nice place to stop, sit on a stool for a while or grab something and keep going. Not one of these three Stauf's locations have the vibrant cultural ambience that they once had. Not one do I find have taken the time to expand the roast and expand their offerings and stay up or competitive with these amazing coffee shops that have truly caused an explosion in the Columbus Coffee Movement. Several local roasters are nonprofits and give back to society...I appreciate that aspect. Stauf's just doesn't do that within the community for the community. So unfortunately you see that I'm not a big supporter when I have a lot of options in the Greater Columbus area. The one big positive that I will say is that employees seem to care about what they're doing and they definitely have the visual vibe to fit in that professional position. read more

I think I spent the last eighteen months before college at Stauf's. I would be on so often with my friends or, less pleasant, a textbook, that I got to know several of the baristas and customers (OSU med students galore!) It was great and definitely one of the things I miss most about Columbus; I go back every time I'm home. Between the bare white walls and metal, off-center tables, the atmosphere is ridiculously unpretentious. Don't miss the bags of roasted beans by the entrance (although the brilliant smell is difficult to ignore) or the wall of tea leaves in the back middle-left. In the summer, spend at least one afternoon sitting outside with an iced coffee (or iced coffee like drink) watching people go by and eavesdropping on nearby conversations. This is a great cafe, lots of seats and a simple charm. The food is great and comes to the table quickly in my experience. It's a bit loud but to be expected for a bustling cafe on a main street. The only feedback I have for the owner and management is to find a better way to manage drink orders. You get to the end of the bar in a sea of people on a weekend day, the baristas are hard to hear when drinks are called...and it's only the description of the drink and not a name or a number which makes it confusing for your patrons. If you get backed up and you have multiple orders a popular drink nobody knows who's it is and you ask the staff and they don't seem to know either. I've never been one to hang out in coffee shops, but this is perhaps my favorite in Columbus. It has a slight bohemian feel to it. Nothing like the cookie-cutter Starbucks or Caribou coffee shops most of us are used to. Stauf's patrons consist of all types just hanging out, working, chatting, and people-watching. It's safe to say at any given hour there are students, professionals, business people, and artsy types sipping their cup of joe - either at one of the indoor tables or out on the patio. I also like that it's not a cramped coffee shop. You're given plenty of elbow room and I quite like the idea of being able to have a conversation without a stranger sitting right on top of you. BONUS: Stauf's provides patrons with free wi-fi. Some of my friends find Stauf's coffee to taste over-roasted, but it's a matter of preference -- I like their coffee a lot. Well, look at you, Stauf's You've been hard at work in the 8 months I've been away. Cleaner, brighter, more spacious (or making better use of space anyway). You clean up good, my friend. Stauf's was admittedly not my go-to coffee spot when I lived in the neighborhood (to be honest, I'm totally Sweden went it comes to coffee - my loyalties lie nowhere). I used to find it a little shabby, a little noisy and a lot uncomfortable. The changes they've been slowly making have done wonders to make the place a bit more homey. The coffee itself tastes as it ever did - not bad but nothing to Yelp about. Dependably okay?? The loose leaf teas, however, seem to go largely ignored but are definitely worth a taste. They have a chocolate mint blend I used to suck down by the gallon each winter. It was great to see this local institution get a mild makeover - the little changes have added up. Stauf's is a great place to grab a cup of coffee and catch up with a friend. I highly recommend the latte or iced coffee! If you're feeling fancy or wanna channel your inner coffee enthusiast, order a pour over because they roast all their coffees in House. Stauf's is not a great place to be productive or study. I only say this because it is so packed on a daily basis throughout the day. The tables are old and rickety. The chairs provide zero comfort. Also, outlets are so difficult to access. Sometimes, it feels like hunger games trying to get a seat by an outlet. Also, it would be nice if they took the time to give this place a face lift because it feels old and grimey. The German Village location is significantly better in terms of atmosphere and decor. read more

Came here with a friend who loves coffee who probably enjoyed it more than me because I'm not a coffee drinker and couldn't care less. It's just not my kind of place, while I liked the natural lighting and plants everywhere I'm just not a coffee person so all the novelty that pulls in coffee lovers just goes over my head. I wanted to purchase some food to try it out but the menu was just not enticing to me. Also none of the nutrition information was available in store or online. Not a place I plan on returning or trying again. Just not for me. read more
