Came here with a friend who loves coffee who probably enjoyed it more than me because I'm not a coffee drinker and couldn't care less. It's just not my kind of place, while I liked the natural lighting and plants everywhere I'm just not a coffee person so all the novelty that pulls in coffee lovers just goes over my head. You can't talk about Columbus coffee without bringing up Stauf's. Since it first opened doors in 1988, Stauf's has cultivated a reputation for being THE comprehensive coffee store in Columbus's Grandview area. The café is always busy and full of energy. Lunch on weekdays and brunch on weekends are when the cafe is jam packed with families, students, and the neighborhood book club. There are plenty of seats, but you might have to wait a while during prime time. Outlets are limited, but that doesn't stop college kids from setting up shop with their MacBooks and headphones. Oh and the coffee? It's good. Some say it's the best. In fact, Stauf's is the main supplier of coffee for many other cafés in Columbus and around the nation. Best coffee in town and smells like heaven when you walk in. Indian monsoon is my favorite coffee. If you're a Starbucks person who needs more junk in your coffee than coffee or like the burnt taste it won't be your thing but if you like super delicious coffee and helpful staff this is the place to go. Stauf's has excellent coffee! That must be said, first of all. Their drip coffee is good, and they have top notch baristas. Stauf's is not just a coffee house though. On their menu are breakfast and lunch options like sweet potato hash, lox, and kale salad with goat cheese. I remember having biscuits and gravy at stauf's years ago, when I first moved to Columbus and feeling a wave of relief that only southern comfort food can provide. The biscuits and gravy are no longer on the menu, and the loving care that went into them is similarly absent from the food. In the past couple years, Stauf's food has declined in quality, considerably. Their potatoes are undercooked consistently, I haven't tasted a grain of seasoning in anything I've ordered in years, and the "toast" that arrived with my last meal was merely a burnt heel of sourdough smaller than my jerky-like bacon. This is such a shame. In 2008, Stauf's was hard to beat in terms of their menu, location, and their coffee. Again, it bears mention that their coffee is still excellent. It is all roasted on site, and their selection cannot be beat by any roaster this side of Old Town East. They offer a great selection of teas, merchandise, and are prepared to accommodate every one from the Mr. Coffee crowd to the most pretentious pour-over-or-die coffee snob. With our shelf exams coming up, I knew I could go there and find a perfect balance of cozy cafe feels and an atmosphere full of life - as opposed to the silent fortresses that are campus libraries. While the latter has been an important part of my academic career thus far, starting third year of med school has made me realize I crave any opportunity to be out and about, and Stauf's does a great job of satisfying this thirst. First off, I love that there is parking in the back! And, in stark contrast to most of Columbus, you can be sure to find a spot 95% of the time. During the quick walk to the cafe from the parking lot, you can notice tables conveniently placed outside for those who wish to paint, catch up with friends, or simply take in Grandview's beauty. After entering, I grabbed a table for two and placed an order for "The Wrap," which was brought out to me within 5-10 mins. The spinach, bell peppers, and red-skinned potatoes complimented the egg so perfectly, and I was impressed with the freshness of each bite. Plus, they had cute little Tabasco bottles you could grab, which added a nice subtle spicy taste to the mix. I did not get coffee this time, but I have in the past and can say the high standard carries over to that as well. Of course, I appreciate their free wifi, but I, along with other friends, have noted it can sometimes take 15-20 mins to connect when you first get there. Just a heads up. The art on the walls changes every time I go there and adds a vibrant touch to the cafe, presenting a superb opportunity to take breaks from staring at my laptop screen and marvel at the talent of local artists. As an artist myself, this is definitely one of my favorite parts of frequenting this coffee shop. A very unique touch. I love a good coffee shop. I had the pleasure of meeting one of the corporate liaisons and she talked a lot about the facets of the business while I enjoyed a macchiato. There's something charming about the place. The decor, the music, and the other coffee-drinkers create this really cozy, comfortable coffee-house aesthetic that's perfect for writers, poets, musicians or college kids to come hang out and get things done. Since my original visit, I've been back a number of times to work on my manuscripts and study for upcoming exams. I never feel bothered or distracted by the hustle and bustle behind the scenes; in fact, I find it strangely comforting. In addition, they also have a wide selection of food, which is great because that means I don't have to get up in the middle of what I'm doing to soothe a growling stomach. Orders are filled fast and the staff always has funny stories or anecdotes to share while I'm waiting for my next caffeine fix. Great food for the price, but very unreliable for a few reasons. The kitchen often closes earlier than advertised and I've gone to get food before 2pm when the kitchen closes but they have already closed down the food, so I just had to leave and find somewhere else. I had no idea how big the inside is, but it still manages to feel small and cramped, hectic and stressed is not what I want to feel like while enjoying a cup of coffee and something sweet, so I just got somethhing sweet to go and that still took 20 minutes ever without having to wait in the looooong coffee line. Cake at $4.50 a teeny tiny slice, no thanks, muffins at $3 and cupcakes or mellow bars $3.50 each I seetled on the happy medium and couldn't resist the blueberry lemn and coconut cupcakes but $7 for 2 and they were dry as hell! I guess if I would have gotten a coffee to swallow it down it with, it might have been better. The frosting was great though, not too thick or rich and not too much, actually i would have wanted more since the cake was so darn dry, the lemon didn't taste like lemon, the only blueberry I tasted were the 3 on top and the coconut want i also only got the taste from the coconut on the frosting. What a disspointment to have spent that much on 2 cupcakes, and my coffee I'd rather get at Giant Eagle for $.50 a cup! read more

This was my first time here and I was semi impressed. We went on a Saturday night around 8 and it was jamming. The tables were mostly full and it was really difficult to find parking. There is parking behind the building so check there first. I tried to order the almond joy but they were out of coconut syrup. This is the second time I've tried to get this drink from 2 different staufs and they never have coconut syrup. My sister got a steamer and forgot to ask for syrup and I thought it was weird they didn't offer to add it. The staff was semi friendly and seemed like they'd rather not be there. But they made a beautiful leaf in my coffee so I can give them that and the coffee was good. But other than that, I probably won't be back with the customer service the way it was. read more

I spent my last afternoon in Columbus on the patio at Stauf's. I haven't spent much time in Grandview, so I actually drove past the place and the entrance to the back parking lot twice before getting it right. I don't drink coffee, so I can't speak to the variety and quality of the beans that they offer, although the shop is pretty cool looking. I do agree with Nijole that the setup of the tables is a little cramped looking, which is why I decided to sit outside despite the lack of outlets there. I had a peach smoothie, which was good though a little pricy at $4.50 for the smaller size. It was good, but nothing to write home about; and it separated pretty quickly when I took it outside to the patio. A nice place to sit and do some reading or writing. If you're looking for a local alternative to the Panera up the street, this is a good choice. read more

I'm here everyday for coffee and a bagel! It's a great, local shop that I love supporting. Here are items I've had and loved/would recommend: 1. Any of their coffee. I particularly like trying the different flavored options. 2. Bagels: they're just like a normal bagel, but delicious nonetheless. 3. Strawberry Scone: so tasty with fresh berries. 4. Bacon and cheese Scone: delicious warmed up in the microwave. It gets really busy around the middle of the day so it's difficult to find a spot to sit. The place looks rough around the edges, and the chairs aren't very comfortable, but the coffee and sweets are definitely worth checking out. I have not tried their "real" food, but I'm sure it's quite tasty as well. Anyways, Stauf's is located in a good sized combination store + coffee house with lots of outdoor seating. The coffee house, my reason for going, feels old and well worn, but still homey. Lighting varies from bright to dark, and the ambiance is very plain, reminding me of an old-fashioned warehouse, but it's comfortable enough. I'm not sure it's a place I would want to spend hours at, but it's perfect as a location to meet with friends or spend a bit of time out of the house. The night I went, a Saturday, it was full though not overcrowded, mostly with friends hanging out but a few students clicking away at laptops as well. For my visit, I had an Entertainment book coupon about to expire that I wondered if I could use, to which I received an affirmative answer from the staff who, though not as peppy or energetic as at some coffee stores, were polite, helpful, and low-keyed. With this being the case, I ordered up a large cappuccino and a slice of cinnamon bun cheese cake. ...yeah, so definitely try that cheese cake. It is simply marvelous. If I had any complaint it's that there's a very thick crust that is a bit dry, but the cake itself is smooth, decadent, and full of...well...cinnamon bun flavor. Simply fantastic. The cappuccino was also terrific, carefully put together by the staff to make a perfect blend of rich coffee flavor and mildness from the milk. Stauf's has quite the reputation as I heard about them on my second week in Columbus. So I had to go see for myself. I have been three times all for different reasons. What I like about Stauf's is that they know coffee. Staff are knowledgeable and provide quality recommendations. They also serve a variety of coffee drinks and are more than willing to accommodate any order customization request. In addition to the cafe side of the business, you can select your coffee type and bring it home. Thus, ensuring that you can have your Staufs fix at any time. What I don't like is that finding a seat is always a painstaking process. It is comparable to a parking garage in that people are waiting for you to finish then will pounce on the place while the seats are still warm. This is a good problem to have from a business point of you, but is enough for me to avoid dining in. read more

I have a real fondness for Stauf's. The coffee is delicious, the teas are all fantastic, brunch is good, the atmosphere is kinda eclectic and funky. It's what a good local coffee shop should be, in my humble opinion. I love that, depending on the day and time, you can find a huge variety of people and personality types there. I've seen the family with small kids, the young Republican set, the hipsters, the hippies, struggling students, and severely hungover partiers all rubbing elbows congenially at Stauf's for Sunday brunch. I like that. It makes the place feel very welcoming to everyone. You can buy their coffee from bulk stock that they roast themselves from individuals who really know what they're talking about. You can sample and smell the amazing variety of teas they carry (I love the Market Spice). You can even buy the right equipment to brew what you buy. All of that is nestled in the more "shop" side near the entrance. In the cafe you'll find lots of small tables, wooden floors, a big pastry case stocked (or not so stocked, depending on time of day) with baked goods from other local spots. The menu of prepared food they offer is all really good. The coffee they serve is superb and their cappucinos, lattes, mistos, etc are all really well made by staff that are obviously trained up right. Word to the wise, this place can get awfully packed during brunch hours so arrive early or be prepared to have to ninja yourself a table. read more

Stauf's is one of my favorite cafes in Cbus. They are a community staple that are the very first coffee roasters in the city, have pleasant staff, a very casual and comfortable atmosphere to relax, meet with friends, or work, and they have one of the best selections of loose leaf tea out of all the coffee-focused cafes in the area. I'm definitely more of a tea fan over coffee, and I love that I can come here and have over 15 quality loose leaf teas from which to choose. I hate going to a shop and paying $5 for a cheap tea bag I could buy a whole box for at a grocery store. This place is very spacious as well, but still has that cozy atmosphere. I haven't tried any of the food so can't really speak to that, but they do seem to have a variety of cafe staples and it at least smells good! You can also purchase the coffee and the tea in bulk if you prefer to prepare it in your own home, and they also sell the equipment to do so. Updating my review! We recently visited the shop on a Saturday afternoon. It was fairly busy. First, a girl working behind the counter, taking orders, asked us if she could take our order, however we were still deciding what we wanted. She acted annoyed. (We had literally just walked up!!) We placed our order with a guy who was very helpful. Here's the tricky part. We ordered 2 smoothies and after a minute, 2 smoothies showed up on the counter. They sat there for a while so we thought they were ours. That's my fault because I didn't ask. It turns out they weren't ours, but the guy who had ordered them apparently didn't know they were his either, because he was standing there the whole time just staring at them. Again, I admit this was my bad. I do wish they'd take names so that this kind of stuff doesn't happen. When there was confusion about the smoothies, I spoke up, admitting my mistake. That same girl that was rude to us at first rolled her eyes and acted so irritated. I already felt terrible about making a mistake and the eye roll just sealed it for me. I used to work in food service and customer service, so I quite value it. It'll take me a while to get back here. They have a wide variety of coffee beans imported from around the world. We bought Ethiopia moka beans and India monsooned beans to try at home and we order the jamaican blue mountain coffee to sip as we ate breakfast. Its a sunday morning and they are very busy. However i was told they are always busy. The coffee we ordered was good but a little strong. I ordered the egg sandwich which was good and filling. My wife ordered the morning has with sweet potatoes and avocado. Sounds healthy to me but i did try it and it was good. This place is a nice spot to sit and sip coffee. I wanted to like this place. I did. But everything kept going wrong. First walking in was weird, is this a coffee house or a coffee roasters/store? Please pick one, or at-least give me a different entrance. We headed over the the coffee side. Menu on the wall in chalk - that's always fun... said no one. Your a coffee house not Jenis ice cream. We ordered, however this entire time the gentleman taking our order could not be heard over the LOUDNESS of this place. I felt like we were in a nightclub w the DJ spinning tunes, that's how loud it was (no joke) I being the nice joking guy, put my head to my ear and asked him to talk up Bc I could not hear. This seemed to bug him. After we ordered he told us to listen for our order. Really? I just told you I could not hear in this place... but we accepted the mission. I ordered a Small Iced Coffee and asked to leave room for cream & sugar. Check check. After adding my normal amount of Splenda and half-and-half the coffee just had this bitterness to it, that not even rivaled Starbucks is bite. It was just so. I can make a mean cup of iced coffee, so I hope my taste buds were off. Also ordered a Bacon Cheddar scone. It had the hardest piece of cooked cheese attached to the end like hard ozz. The Scone way to flaky, kind of biscuit like. Edible but not the hard cheese part. I will give this place another shot, maybe not on a Saturday mid-morning. When I do, I'll make it a point to update this review. I dislike giving not so nice ones, but can't fake it. I to have to Ask who these ppl with laptops acting like they are working are? What an absolute delight! As many of you who follow know, I am a harsh critic when it comes to food. Stauf's was outstanding. As you first walk into this coffee shop, you are greeted with barrels upon barrels of fresh coffee beans. They have many coffee accessories as well. I ordered the morning hash and a cortado. The hash was outstanding! Fresh red skin potatoes, sliced red bell peppers, onions, scallions topped with two perfectly cooked over easy eggs. The crisp of the locally made 9 grain bread complemented the hash to perfection. The portion was actually pretty big for just one person, but I can eat :). Add a lil pepper, ketchup, and hot sauce and you have a fantastic start to the day. The cortado was amazing as well! Larger than expected, which was a pleasant surprise. Being from out of town, and new to the Ohio river valley area I was very impressed with this establishment. Will absolutely come back if I'm in Columbus! Second time to this location. If you are a tea or coffee lover this is heaven in Columbus! Its very common to run in to OSU students studying while you are in. Very nice friendly people working here, also its very diverse I hear 2 or 3 different languages every time I am in here. I love that you can choose your tea leaves, smell it and make your own tea bag for brewing. Love staufs! It definitely is part of the heart of grandview and is the center of the community! Food is good and if you get tea you get to pick from a huge variety of loose leaf teas! The only reason i gave 4 Stars is because sometimes the coffee can be inconsistent in quality depending on who makes it. Or if the shop is really busy, I think they get busy and skimp on the quality. Great atmosphere to sit and work - but tables can be a little rickety. When it's busy, finding somewhere to sit can be an adventure. Great shop and worth going! This is my favorite coffee shop in Columbus. The vibe is casual and cozy, and the drinks are delicious. I usually opt for a regular latte, which is not complete without a beautiful design in the foam on top. The best breakfast item is the Morning Hash with sweet potatoes and focaccia bread. My only complaint is that you need to grab a table on the outskirts of the dining area if you want access to outlets. My advice is to get there early! read more
