STAX is tucked into cozy location on the corner across from Morro Rock. We enjoyed comfortable outdoor seating.and 60 degree weather, fog was beginning to burn off. The Morro Bay car show is going on for three days lots of cruisers passing our patio table. We decided on their bowl ofseafood chowder it was velvety thick excellent generous portions of scallops, clams, shrimp complemented with small bites of potato's with all the perfect spices it was a 10. We added two filet mignon steak fajitas but taco style. They were delicious the seasoned filet mignon along with the sweet onions and peppers with a queso fresco on a warm corn tortillas were outstanding We topped our terrific late lunch off with a moist flavorful piece of carrot cake and carmel sauce that we shared. James our waiter was super friendly. STAX along with their perfected menu has large impressive selection of local and notable wines and champagne. Service ok. Had to wait a bit for wine refills but no big deal. Crab cakes~delicious. Tacos were ok. Kind of pricey for what you get. My bad for not paying attention. I ordered what I thought were fajitas and the waiter came and brought two tacos. I was a little surprised. Two tacos for that price is a little ridiculous and they were just okay. Ambience was chic~outdoors on a tall table people watching while having amazing conversation. Also, dog friendly and enjoyed watching dogs make small talk. Lol read more

Small update to a previous review. Went back two days later and absolutely wonderful service from the staff again (TY Cici). They are such a fun group and really make STAX a great place to hang out. Tried the Margherita pizza and chicken wings. So delicious. Even took another order of wings to go and enjoy back at the hotel. read more

We come to Morro Bay every year for the Happier Camper group camp. A couple years ago we walked into town and found Stax... and my girl fell in love with their Ultimate Crostini. We'll be here every year for that and i always get the mac and cheese with bacon. Today we met the owner and he was super cool. We tried the new pastrami sandwich, which was delicious. We've never had less than a stellar experience and we really appreciate that they let our dog bring us in :) read more

Had a local merchant recommend this place. It's a wine bar with high end appetizers and food. Seat yourself inside or outside. Perfect place to people watch. The ultimate crostini with filet mignon was incredible! Sent a picture to my stepson, who is head chef in Texas and said he is adding it to his menu. Then what pairs best with filet and a bottle of red? It's a hot bologna sandwich! Didn't know bologna was ever cut that thick, but with the grilled onions, mustard and ciabatta roll, it was excellent! All of this with tip for $100! Beats the $200 dinner we had the night before. This might be my new favorite restaurant in Morro Bay!! Unfortunately they are only open Friday-Sunday. There are plenty of indoor and pup friendly outdoor tables, many with great views. Our server was excellent. We ordered the wedge salad, caeser salad and the steak crostini. Everything was so delicious. Of course they also have a very extensive wine list! Super cute wine bar right on the waterfront. Popular patio out front. We stopped in for a couple glasses of wine. Their small glass lates all looked really good. We had the Dungeness crab cakes served on greens in a tomato vinaigrette. The Ultimate Crostini w/ filet mignon, mushrooms, blueberries cheese, arugula and housemade pesto looked amazing, too. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere and is right on the water on the Embarcadero. They have a good wine list and excellent service. We ordered the caprese salad and some bread which was very good. The carnitas tacos were pretty good, but not great. The seafood chowder was fishy and *extremely* salty so we sent it back. Having been raised in New England and on Cape Cod we know good seafood chowder - it is almost impossible to find outside of New England, sad to say. The consistency of the chowder here at Stax was correct - on the thinner side and not too thick. That thick, gloppy stuff you see for sale is 100% wrong - authentic chowder is not thick. In any case, we would return and order the things we found on the menu that were reasonably good. Again - Stax has standout service what was appreciated. read more

I've always been attracted to this place. The patio is charming and the interior is inviting. They have a reasonable selection of food and a large selection of wine. The atmosphere is convivial. The staff are friendly if not the most efficient. But please if you forget to enter the order you verbally repeated when you took it, don't later say that you didn't hear me! I didn't leave with the best feeling in my mouth or stomach. The steak fajitas tacos were good and arrived very hot, which always makes food taste good. Crab cakes were okay, but while the menu says they are served on a bed of greens, this just contributed a sprinkling of basil under the crab cakes. Finally, there was something seriously wrong with the mac n cheese the night we tried it. Think Brie ring gone all wrong. It tasted like quinine or Bitrex, we also considered poison. Frankly inedible. Don't get me wrong, this place is still charming, but may be best just to come for a drink. Tonight didn't give us a reason to come eat here again. read more

I was hoping to like this place. I came in with a friend visiting from Reno, we both ordered the French rose by glass on the menu which was nice and the crab cakes and the wedge salad. The crab cakes were bland and flavorless and the wedge salad was made with romaine lettuce which was interesting. However, the dressing on top of it was a mass produced-- off brand blue cheese dressing. So bad and doused all over the salad. Then we looked over and saw someone with a steak and said we didn't see that on the menu.. The waiter looked at the menu quizzically, then said oh yah on the night menu we feature steak etc but it's not on the menu and you have to ask for it...really weird..On the other hand the ambiance was decent and it was great to get off the street and ditch the hordes of tourists on the weekend. read more

On the occasion we venture to the coast from Atascadero, my husband and I love to go to Stax for not only wine, but also amazing food. They actually have a sort of 'hidden' menu...just ask about their 'specials.' This typically includes a selection of prime cuts of beef or fresh seafood, prepared on their outdoor grill. I'd never tried one of the specials before, as I enjoy so many things on their regular menu....but decided to step out of the box. I ordered shrimp skewers and grilled asparagus. The shrimp were well seasoned, plump and juicy. The serving of asparagus was so generous....DEFINITELY shareable (so keep that in mind). The wine selection is amazing, with many 'by the glass' options. You can't beat the location, with nice views of Morro Rock. The staff are always helpful and attentive. This is definitely a place worth checking out, as much for the food as the wine. read more

During a getaway weekend trip, we happened to stop at Stax for dinner on a Friday night.  The food, ambiance, and service were so enjoyable that we made a point of coming back for Saturday dinner too! Tip: After 5pm, ask for the "hidden menu"; the dishes on it are more expensive, but I don't think you'll regret the higher prices :-) Everything we tried here was wonderful - I don't think it's possible to go wrong with whatever you choose.  Our favorites from both nights were he crab cakes, the filet crostini, and the Mac & cheese. STAX Wine Bar is a hidden GEM ! A lovely, refined freestanding building along Morro Bay's docks & esplanade (in the shadow of the power plant chimneys), it's a fine spot to have a taste of their extensive wine & champagne collection. But the FOOD is the reason we'll be going back the next time we're in town. The printed menu reads very nicely - sliders, onion soup, crostini, salads - but when our server Matthew mentioned the 'underground menu', our horizons were made much broader. My wife's New York steak, rare and beautifully charred from the grill outside the kitchen, was PERFECT. At $59., we had high expectations, and they were met - more than a pound of premium steak, giving us a full portion to take home. And my dish, this week's featured bluefin tune, was equally perfectly grilled with plenty to enjoy later (29.). The addition of beautiful farmer's market mushrooms with the steak and grilled zucchini with the fish rounded out our truly fantastic meal. And the comfortable, attentive, friendly service from all the staff, Matthew in particular, made for a memorably great harborside dinner. I suspect the other menu items are quite good, too - but the excellent quality, large portions and delicious preparation will keep us coming back for the off-menu underground specials.
