Ambiance was weird, literally no one there during a usually busy brunch time. Food over promised in their flashy menu names & descriptions and definitely under delivered. Eggs were like rubber, toast was cold, brunch drinks were 95% mixer and the prices are absurd for what you get. Service was okay I guess? Cute spot. My friend and I decided to catch a quick bite and stumbled upon Stay Cafe. It's attached to what looks/sounds like a club/bar. I'm not certain if due to the holiday weekend the club portion was open early, but the music was rather distracting as I wasn't intending on eating at a club. The restaurant wasn't very busy when we arrived, but our server took a while to come over. She wasn't very attentive or friendly, but she also wasn't rude. I think she was also in charge of the coffee bar which may be why she was unable to engage with us as we were seated on the other side of the restaurant. I ordered the bananas foster French toast, breakfast potatoes, and the How dirty do you want it Chai. The food arrived quickly and was tasty. I don't like that they only have pork meat options for breakfast as it limited my options and everything is a la cart. If you don't eat pork or like omelets you will have to have a carb heavy meal. All in all, it's a nice little spot,but I won't be returning for breakfast until they expand their meat offerings. read more

I come here fairly often and the food is good, but I mostly go there for coffee on quick runs. Today I sat down with my little one, and I had the worst customer service. I got a caramel cappuccino and unfortunately it wasn't what I expected, what I got didn't have any foam and the milk was burnt. I informed Jake that I didn't enjoy the coffee and it wasn't what I asked for, I was in a rush so I kindly asked him to just pack the food to go and bring me the check. When he brought the check I just asked him to please remove the coffee from the bill due to my unsatisfied experience. He said "well, the ladies over there seemed to enjoy it" and I said "okay, but I didn't, could you just please remove it off the bill?" And he rudely responded " well that sounds like a personal problem, you asked for it and you have to pay for it, this is a business and it costs us money" oh my dear, if they keep you working there with that horrible experience you give to customers, that business will loose more than a cup of coffee (which I still payed for btw lol) I don't like to make a scene so I thanked him and walked out. I'd say stay away, until they hire proper kitchen staff. There are hiring signs posted for the kitchen. Any good cooks out there, PLEASE apply!! I've NEVER had an open faced omelette that was very thin and completely BURNT on the bottom. I couldn't even eat it and it made no sense to complain as it wouldn't have made a difference, unfortunately. Please note this restaurant also charges a 20% tip right off the bat. As my wife said succinctly, "It's good but not great." In our neighborhood, I've dined in nearly a dozen times at Stay Cafe, including long "stays" while working and during the busy weekend morning rush. Service is always excellent and a real strength! The food is pretty good and ranges from healthy options to kinda decadent. This morning, I finally had the signature Red Velvet Pancakes, and with slightly more frosting they would have been perfect, but the side of tasty sausage links was this morning's star. The coffee is always very good and includes interesting variations that I haven't tried (eg, Red Eye). Booths are enormous and great for working over food and coffee with power outlets on the wall. However, with little effort Stay could be better by getting some details right. The space is decent with good light from the street and includes some plants and a lounge area. But despite being open for quite awhile, it's entirely devoid of any art, a conspicuous omission for our hipster neighborhood, especially on the strangely built back wall that always leaves me puzzled as to whether it was the architect or the contractor that got it so wrong. And I would argue the music is similarly devoid of art, always a poppy pablum that grows quite tiresome, imagine stuffed animals dancing among flowers (don't think I've ever criticized the music in any prior review). And some other details are off as a result of trying to be a little different. For example, although I appreciate the style of the large coffee mugs, I recently ordered a dish that was pleasing to the eye but where the actual dish would not allow me to rest a knife easily -- form without function. [Similarly, in their sister bar next door, a boozy cocktail was served with slivered citrus zest that stuck in our teeth.] No one detail is a killer alone, but they start to add up to diminish the overall experience. I will continue to go there and genuinely hope they do well and remain a convenient option in our neighborhood. read more

Service was very slow. Mind you there were only 3 other tables. I'd hate to be here when it's actually busy. There was 1 server doing everything. From taking orders, to making drinks, to bussing the food. That should not all be on her. So I understand why it was slow. Taking our food order took way too long as well. Bloody Maria drink was not good. Food was exceptionally good though! My table got the ham and cheese croissant, Cobb salad, banana foster French toast, hot chicken sandwich and Cajun omelet. Went to restaurant on December 14, 2022 our waiter told us they were in their soft opening. I had the avocado toast and my son had the smoked salmon Benedict both meals were excellent. I went here on a slow Wednesday morning. It's a great place! I went in for a quick breakfast sandwich to take to go, but ordered the salmon Benedict and stayed. So glad I did! My breakfast sandwich was absolutely delicious but a tad greasy. I thought I was ordering something a bit healthier than it turned out. That being said it was really frigging good! Although the interior feels like a hotel, and not in the best way, both the food and drinks were some of the best I've had in Chicago. The coffee and tea had excellent presentations and were full of flavor. The bloody Mary was delicious and spicy, and had a piece of candied bacon that was to die for. It was jammed packed and busy so the delay in food was reasonable and the server was providing continued updates. The food we ordered was disappointing. First disappointment is that potatoes and toast do not come with breakfast entrees and are extra leaving your breakfast around $20. At that point we are still hopeful the food was going to be spectacular and worth the price tag. Omelet was mediocre, small and over cooked. Someone didn't even try to make it look appetizing because there was nothing else on the plate. Pancakes looked beautiful but were dry and lacked flavor. Steak sandwich was unseasoned and small with no sides or garnish. The potatoes and sausages were delicious and worth recognition. We left hungry and defeated. What's surprising treat! A friend suggested we meet here for lunch. The exterior is drab and the streetscape among the ugliest I've seen in Chicago. Parking is challenging so I had to find something on a sidestreet. On entry I was like "oh, nice!" The interior is fresh and spacious. The food is terrific. A total cut above average and the server, who might have been the owner, was super pleasant. This is a little gem on a really ugly section of street. My spouse and I waited sat for 15+ minutes without being greeted by our sever or even given water by staff. Decided to leave after watching the servers visit and check in the tables surrounding us. We attempted to ask multiple staff if we could place our order but watched them walk by including the two hosts that sat us and possibly the manager that even said hello. The bartenders at the bar no more than 8 feet behind us were busy and the busser was running items. We witnessed the table next to us finish their meal and wait patiently for the attention of their server to return. It seems this is possibly the vibe. The staff did not seem to help each other or look out for their fellow servers' tables. They lack communication and the ability to scan the restaurant for those that might need attention as they work. Maybe their staff is newly working together as a team. We're typically understanding when a restaurant is full and clearly busy, but this was just a little ridiculous. read more
