Steak In A sack is in my DNA - more than 60 years ago I learned to love their food when my family lived in Falls Church, VA - and then when I used to live in Ft. Washington, MD I found them there and learned that they were relatives of the original. Bottom line - I have been away for a long, long time and had a hankering for a steak in a sack sandwich - I was not disappointed. I wish there was something like them where I live in St. Louis (would love their recipe!) They have repainted and cleaned up the restaurant, and a lovely older woman of color sanitized my table and made sure everything was clean - service was prompt - everything was great! This place was a big disappointment. My husband and I loved the one in Marlow Heights, so we decided to try this one since the Marlow Heights location is now closed. We had 2 Carryout orders: a simple 2 eggs, home fries, scrapple and toast platter and their specialty dish, The Steak in a Sack. We inspected the food before we left because once you leave you can't come back in if something's wrong with your order. My husband thought they gave him the wrong thing because there was lettuce, tomatoes and mayo in his platter...the original never came with that in Marlow Heights. Also, the steak and eggs that he added perfectly fit inside the pita bread...where in Marlow Heights it is always overflowing with steak. The young lady who rang us up explained these ARE NOT the same people that ran Marlow Heights. These are their relatives, by marriage, and therefore the items are not the same as the original place. Ok, so we check out my plate and all looked well. We get home to eat and was all the way let down. The eggs were good, the potatoes had zero seasoning (just literally cut-up and fries), and my scrapple was paper-thin. My husband ate his plate super fast because there was barely any meat, where with the original place he usually couldn't even finish it. All and all it was ok food, but we could've saved $21 and did the same thing or better at home for free! The young lady at the register was nice. Their menu is quite extensive, offering items such as omelets, breakfast plates (pancakes, toast, corned beef hash, etc.), dinners (meatloaf, salisbury steak, veal steak, etc.), burgers, homemade soups, salads, sandwiches, and subs. The hubs and I came here for a weekend breakfast, and we tried: the Steak in a Sack Sandwich (a pita bread filled with ribeye steak and onions, with an optional add-in of cheese (which I happily requested) - I really liked the cuts of the ribeye meat and the onions, but the all spice seasoning was just way too overwhelming; I will most likely get a regular steak & cheese sandwich the next time!; Chipped Beef on white toast (the chipped beef was nice and creamy, but could have used a bit of salt; the side of home fries were super crispy and delicious!); and, a side of hot cakes (these were fluffy and yummy, and came with a pat of butter). Don't forget to try out their housebrewed sweet tea, as it is as sweet as it can be (but, refreshing!) - the hubs totally enjoyed it! Definitely a "mom & pop" spot...breakfast was very tasty and full of flavor. I ordered the french toast w/eggs & bacon. ALL of it was great! The bacon was cooked just like home sooo good! I have no idea what the awkward name of this super homey diner even means and I don't wanna know. The thing is, I've been dining here for years now and it's not a place to bring a date, but it is a place to bring someone you care about. You get the difference? Homemade sweet tea with crushed ice is one of their saving graces. It's better than McDonald's, the standard of sweet tea in DC. I always order the steak and eggs, and that's a hit or miss, depending on who's in the kitchen. But otherwise, it's a good, sloppy, greasy American meal and I like it! Now, if you come check this place out, and you've just come from a Silver Diner and you try to compare, then you just won't get its appeal. In fact, you may be pretty disgusted. This little "hole-in-the-wall gem is situated in a small strip of stores in the heart of Ft. Washington. I swear I haven't had a better steak and cheese with grilled onions, lettuce, tomato, and provolone cheese with homemade sub rolls in this area in the long time-and I'm born and raised here in the DMV. My hubby introduced me to this joint about 6 months ago and I love it every time. Their pancakes? Taste like when g-ma used to make them or mom did on a Sunday morning. Their fries taste fresh cut, with the right amount of salt. All of their food is cooked to order, and you won't be disappointed. The staff is super friendly and that is a definite plus. While slicing up my pancakes, I saw a black spot inside of it. I look closer and tried to break the piece off, not to find out it was a bug. It was a bug cooked inside of my pancakes! I was devastated! I work with the State of Maryland government Dept of Human Resources; alone side the State of Maryland Health Department. Monday morning they will be notified. My eggs are basically burnt all the time. Their cooks need better training. They have new girls on the floor but they are very slow with tending to tables. How does a person order a simple bacon, eggs, toast and home fries and they forget the bacon. They certainly need staff that can handle volume, I sat down to eat and waited two hours they were so all over the place. Horrible. My boyfriend and I were driving to a park nearby and decided to stop based on reviews. We both ordered a pork BBQ sandwich platters. Then it came with fries that tasted like fish sticks because it must he old oil from a previous order that they used to fry them. Awful awful awful. STAY AWAY.
