Really wish I had a Steak N' Shake where I live but since I'm a flight attendant I can go whenever. For this stop I ordered a double steak burger with fries and a chocolate peanut butter shake. The food was ok. Not the best food I've ever had but it was good. Mostly just came for the shake. And OMG is it good!! They have so many flavors but I ALWAYS go for the chocolate peanut butter one. I just love it so much!! Next time I think I need to try and make myself get a different flavor. Maybe the Nutella or KitKat. Nothing bad to say. Asked a worker to put my shake in a to go cup and he called me ma'am. I'm from NYC so I'm not used to that. Very nice people at this location. Didn't take long to get our orders either. Get to the window, and the employee hands me a large Coke and as soon as I get it, it was overfilled and poured all over me and inside my car. She handed me one napkin and asked if I wanted a "new top" wait what? Finally get home to eat, and anticipated hot food since I waited so long. NOPE. This used to be a great restaurant. It is not anymore. I confirmed last week that the dining room is open until midnight, which is a great thing. I came to pick up my order and eat it inside at 9:30 p.m. only to find the doors locked. Supposedly they are short staffed. That doesn't make any sense as they do not offer table service. read more

Worst Steak 'n Shake in the country. Once I ordered a side of chili, and the dish they served it in had old chili all caked onto the outside. I've waited over an hour to order, with only two other tables sat. I've sat in the drive thru for thirty minutes with only one car ahead of me. If you are looking for a great burger cooked to order this is a great place to come. They have hand dipped milkshakes that are wonderful and the French fries are great, too. If you are wanting something other than a hamburger they can do that, as well. This restaurant reminds me of the 'soda fountain' drug stores of yesteryear. I tried to place a mobile order and was told to use a different credit card because it wasn't taking my card. My daughter then tried to place the order and she got the same message. My other daughter went in to the store and placed the order with her debit card. We all three got charged for the one order. When I tried to get a credit, I tried several different phone numbers and couldn't get any one to answer. I have given feedback on the app and requested a call 4 times with no response. I finally called a service desk and they refused to help. This business has very bad customer service and they will not respond to an issue or try to resolve it. This place has been around for a little while and I have had some really bad experiences here. This visit was an exception. It certainly was not my choice to go here because of my prior experiences with this location. Chartasia was our waitress. She was very attentive and patient. My wife wasn't too pleased with her for some reason because she thought she was just standing around, but my mother did take a while to place an order. We also had a manager, I believe, stop by and check on us at one point. This was a sharp contrast to some of the previous experiences in the past few years. I basically got a double cheeseburger with fries. Everything was great. The food was hot and fresh. The fries were hot. The burger was delicious. My wife let me try her burger, which was some odd concoction with peppers on it and it was probably better than my burger. My mom also got a burger with bacon and she said it was very delicious. We were all in agreement that the food was very good that day. It makes me think I wouldn't mind going there at another time now. I will still not give them more than 3 stars probably ever. I am probably at 2 good experiences out of 6 at this point. I just think they gave me a little hope with the meal and service we received. read more

We were seated immediately, but then had to wait twelve minutes before we were even asked what drinks we wanted. There was plenty of staff, and yet my table along with three other tables who were there before us had to wait so long for just a drink order. As I said, there was plenty of staff, but no one seemed worried about actually waiting on new tables or even cleaning empty tables. The management even let children, who were not customers, solicite to paying customers while they were eating their food. The slowest service ever. Noone is in a rush at all. Even my 9 year old said why are they taking their sweet time. From working in restaurants almost my whole life there is no multitasking, and no good management here AT ALL. If Managment can see people waiting at the door for more than 5 minutes and waiting on 3 burgers and fries for an hour and not say anything or address the issue it will never get fixed because it is a problem from the top. Several tables had the "where is our food" look on their face also the waitress is in the back cooking the food while the dining room has 14 dirty tables. FIRST AND FOREMOST: My star rating is not about the staff, food, or quality of restaurant atmosphere. That being said, let me describe my latest visit to the Albany Steak and Shake. I pulled into the drive-thru at around 1am. Empty line! "Sweet deal, this will be quick" I thought. Unfortunately, the lady came on the speaker and told me that they are behind tonight. I figured it would be a few minutes but I wasn't expecting to be able to watch two full episodes of Community on my phone before having my order taken. During my wait, every ten or 15 minutes or so, someone behind me would honk the horn or motion to me to poke my head out the window to ask me how long I've been waiting. I've worked in food service in my past, so I know that being patient and not pushing employees is how you handle these types of situations. Once the lady came back, she apologized again and took my order. I pulled around the side and waited another 10 minutes just to have someone come to the window to take my payment. After that, it was another 15 to get my food. Does that experience suck? Yeah. It does. Is it the fault of the 1 cook/to-go cashier & 1 server working there? NOT A BIT. When the lady handed me the food, she was so apologetic - defeated even. I told her that it was 100% OK and that I've worked in food service in my past and asked her if she had a lot of people call out tonight. She lamented that the management ALWAYS schedules only two people for those shifts and it is always busy. I asked her if she had used her phone to show how busy the dining room was to prove that more staff was needed and she informed me that the management only cares about the sales at the end of the shift and are happy with that number. REALLY?! The people running this place are HAPPY with slow table turnover? They are happy with people leaving the drive-thru without turning into paying customers?! They are happy that people leave the restaurant frustrated at the untimely service they received? This has to be the most "Albany" thing I've ever heard. Whomever is in charge of this specific S&S needs to (1) re-evaluate their reason for continuing to operate the restaurant - because of making money isn't the priority, then shut it down. You aren't doing anyone any favors...and (2) fire your management staff that makes/enforces these staffing decisions. Steak & Shake should always be packed. It's the only late night option (other than Taco Bell) that feeds the all-nighters, 3rd shift workers, college kids, stoners, and everyone in between. They all deserve a good experience, not only because we're all human, but because they bring money to the table like everyone else. TOTAL TIME FOR A DRIVE-THRU ORDER EXPERIENCE - 1 hour 15 minutes. We went during shift change, but the service was excellent!!! The shoestring fries were hot, and they never are at any of the other locations... The cooks showed all the staff respect, and thanked them for their help! That was impressive to me... Our waitress was also the food preparer, and sent our plates out the window and then served them!!! Wow!!! Went through drive thru during lunch on 12-5-20, ordered 2 cheeseburgers with no onion and no tomato. Both sandwiches were very cold and they just pulled off some of the onions on pre-made burgers. Still had some of the tomato juice and seeds on the lettuce. Can deal with removing rest of onion and tomato but being ice cold was awful. If not in a hurry would of asked for a refund. Rarely have I been so angry with a restaurant that I called their 1-800 number, but I did for Steak and Shake! While the food is ok, the service is TERRIBLE. I sat in the DRIVE THRU for more than 40 minutes one night. I only stayed because it was the only place open as it was midnight. The bad thing is that this didn't just happen once, it happened TWICE. And I didn't get an apology on either occasion. The people working there did not care that I sat there for 15 minutes before anyone acknowledged me. There were 4 cars that left while I was in line. It was horrible. If you can get past the long line....the burger shooters are great little mini burgers. I've had great fries at Steak and Shake, but at this particular location, it always tastes like they use old oil. The salads are pretty good too! And of course, it has shake in the name....the shakes are realllly good. I love the banana shake...but be careful, these are big shakes so it's definitely something you would only have occasionally. The waiter took our order. Came back after about 10 minutes to get our order again (even though he wrote it down). My son asked for baked beans as his side, but he was given fries instead. I ordered the oreo red velvet milkshake, and was given a regular red velvet shake instead. One of the burgers we got was not what we ordered. I ordered cheese sauce for everyone's fries. Had to ask a different waitress for the cheese because our waiter never brought it. She said he didnt even enter that we ordered it. Also had to ask for mayo 3 different times because he never brought it. The floors were completely filthy, as were the booths and window sills. While we were eating our food, another table of people came in and sat down right behind us. Our waiter brought them their drinks and dropped them! A full glass of soda all over a woman and her tiny baby in his car seat. Completely soaked the baby, his car seat, and his blankets. I felt so bad for them.
