When a place has a 1.8 rating on Yelp, the odds are not in your favor. But they DID score a 100% on their last health inspection and I hadn't been to one of these chains in over 30 years. Nostalgia was calling and I took the gamble. The restaurant was dirty. Wet floor signs were up but the floor was still sticky with crap on the floor, it was hard to find a clean table, and the teenagers in the kitchen were on their phones instead of cleaning the place. My garlic burger with bacon was mid but satisfying. I enjoyed it except for the weird cold, oily bun. What's up with that? My wife had the steakhouse burger and liked it less with every bite. The caramelized onions were wet and flavorless and were likely the dinner rush leftovers, and the pickles were equally sorry. The fries were the best part and legitimately good. Wish they were thicker. I also appreciated that they gave me a boba tea-sized straw for my shake. Wish the shake was tastier. As for the service, there's no real service here. You order from a kiosk and someone shouts your name 10 minutes later and you pick up your food from the counter. And of course the self-service kiosk does the tip meme too. Every time we go to this Steak 'n Shake drive-through around 10:30-11 PM, there's always some excuse. One night they said they were "out of burgers." Another time it was that the fries were "overheating." Meanwhile, the car in front of us ordered and got their food just fine. It's beyond frustrating to sit in line only to be told a different story every visit. If you're closing early or can't serve food, just be upfront about it instead of making things up. Service is the reason for the mid score. We ordered from the drive thru and it took a while before someone came to the window to take the payment. Almost immediately after we paid, someone else came to the window asking for payment again. I told her that we already paid and she walked away. After a little wait, we got our food. Upon checking the bag, several items were missing. It took a while for someone to come back to the window so that we could let them know what we needed. So, yes, the food is fine. But it takes patience and some frustration to get to that point that you even taste it. read more

Location was dirty, especially the bathrooms. The Soda machine was not working for the product that I ordered. The staff completely ignored me for over 15 minutes. When I finally spoke to a staff member, he claimed "He didn't speak English" and refused to help me. No manager visible anywhere, food took 20 minutes just got get our burgers. The fries were cold, and the burger was very dry. The car in front of me ordered the entire menu then I was basically told everything I wanted was off the menu. This has happened so many times I finally felt the need to leave a review. Decided to stop in on a Saturday for lunch. No longer do they have servers. We ordered on a kiosk and our order was brought to us promptly. Burgers and fries were delicious and shakes were yummy. I came in to order a meal and a milkshake since I had a coupon for a free milkshake. He proceeded to take my credit card and my coupon to the back to I assume ask someone for advice.. He hands me back my coupon and lays my card on the card reader made me pay for the milkshake and rejected my coupon. After I ask did you just charge me for it before asking if I wanted that off. And he said yes. Extremely disappointed.. he also stated that he cannot except the valid coupon unless it was between certain hours, but yet those hours were not stated on the coupon. Good dinner tonight Becky was our waitress. Had the Frisco Melt and the Triple Steak Burger both with fries. Meals were good and filling. Ran out of baked beans at about 1800 and no attempt was made to bake any more. Waitress told the manager and left it in her hands. Later on she comped one of the meals because they ran out of beans. My first time Steak 'n Shake the place was mobbed raising my expectations. I was a single and got a tabled quickly since everyone else we're in large groups. I went for the basics I ordered a double with cheese, fries and a strawberry milk shake. My shake came quickly after ordering, food another story, it was packed so I give them the benefit of the doubt. Ok let's discuss the food, please be warned if you are hungry one hamburger will not satisfy you. The hamburger was this little tiny thing, smaller then a Jr. At the other chains. Taste not bad, nothing exceptional. The fries that came with it were these little skinny things, which were cold before I got half way through my burger and I am a fast eater. Now it's time for the other item from their name. The Shake. Did it look good yes, was it the right color yes, has it ever been near a strawberry I do not think so. If any of you remember the Three Stooges, they made a couple of movies were they ran a restaurant. Their way of making chicken soup was to take a whole chicken and pour hot water through it. I think that's how they made the shake. They took their strawberry for the week and poured milk over it. read more

Visited the Steak N Shake on Hwy 20 near Market Place a few weeks ago. Was somewhat taken aback at the lack of atmosphere with a feeling of coldness, not temperature wise, along with emptiness. No matter I stepped up to one of about 6 kiosks to place order which was fairly easy to complete. Ordered the large chocolate milkshake which I received in a prompt manner. Here is the problem(s). The shake was more like a Wendys Frosty ie a pile of ice cream in a cup. Those big candy cane paper straws are aggravating. Took my shake outdoors to the picnic tables and let the sun melt it which took quite a long time. The quality of the shake was acceptable, however, if you want whip cream that is now 39 cents just an FYI. Overall the experience was disappointing and the restaurant felt cold, desolate and impersonal. I would maybe revisit for another shake, however, dining in, absolutely not. Gone are the days of a greeting at the door, being escorted to a booth, a friendly smile, even a friendly hello. The staff acted as though they were there alone and couldnt have cared any less who, if anyone, visited. All this plus a price increase makes for a possible future bankruptcy for S&S. Everything about the visit was bad. The food was bland (Frisco Melt), vanilla milkshake barely tasted like vanilla but the worst part about the visit was that just about every table was dirty and sticky with NO ONE around to check or clean them so it was left up to us. I don't eat out to clean tables. By far the worst though was the back and forth between the employees and manager. They could have cared less that anyone could hear or understand what they were very loudly saying, and yes, we are Hispanic and CAN understand everything that was being said, including the swear words. Upon pulling to the speaker, we are told it would be 20 minutes for our order. We only wanted to order two shakes. Poor customer service and what you can see from the window, this place is filthy! Won't be long before this place is closed like they are in other cities. We didn't have to wait 20 minutes but for two shakes that were made wrong twice, it took 12 minutes to receive the order. Have you ever been to Popeyes and received terrible service as well as waited forever for your food?? Well this experience is worse. We stopped going because it had been so awful but we said maybe they have improved and we went tonight... we were wrong. 1) told we couldn't order shakes 2)we waited in line for more than 20 minutes after ordering where we left instead of getting food because it did not appear we would get food anytime soon. 3)the girl at the window was arguing with a driver two cars in front of us. Only had the coffee, and that tasted like it had been sitting in the pot about an hour too long. I'm posting this based on observation and my family's dining experience. On the food - it was alright, but given the prices and the fact that Steak N Shake is expected to be a "greasy diner," it was as anticipated. One fellow diner ordered the Cheddar Scrambler. It showed up without sausage (as stated in the menu) and we were told by the waitress "she had forgotten to tell us they had run out." Meanwhile, another fellow diner had a breakfast accompanied by 2 sausage patties. Run out huh? Other dishes including blueberry pancakes and the classic egg breakfast were alright. Don't expect fresh blueberries - even in the middle of berry season. They're canned and syrupy. I guess that's good if you like that sort of thing. Eggs were cooked as ordered. The most unpleasant experience was checking out. It was like talking to a brick wall when trying to get our cashier (manager?) to apply a coupon. I used to go to this location almost every weekend with my friends, it was amazing. Even for a fast food chain, the cooks there made the food with pride and the servers were super friendly. I honestly have no idea what happened, but it seems like every single person that worked there got replaced with a bunch of incompetent, uncaring, unprofessional fools. Whether it's dining in, picking up, or ordering for delivery, I can personally guarantee you that your experience will be awful. Want to dine in? You'll be lucky if the server even pops a tiny smirk, let alone make it seem like they care even a little bit. Pickup or delivery? Prepare yourself, because it gets even worse for those 2 options. I have ordered both delivery and pickup a dozen times from this location, and every. single. time. They got my order blatantly wrong. I live 30 minutes away now. It's still the closest SnS to me. I've had to drive my delivery order back and get it completely redone, taking a crisp extra 15 minutes, leaving my family waiting unnecessarily for an hour and 15. Atleast the food was still pretty decent. Until tonight's order that is. I hadn't ordered food from them in almost a year, and I decided to give them one last chance. Maybe they got rid of the morons they had working there that completely ruined the place! Spoiler alert: they didn't, and they only got worse. For the first time in forever, my order was actually right! And then I opened up the food, and oh my god. What a pile of s**t. My burger, which was a triple steak burger, looks like someone played basketball with the ingredients before slam dunking the thing together and sending it on its way, leaving me to pretty much (re)assemble my own burger, my wife's burger, a double garlic steak burger, probably the simplest thing to put together from their menu, was literally missing the garlic completely, leaving her with a plain, dry cheeseburger. I ordered a vanilla coke with mine, no vanilla, hell not even coke, it was diet coke instead. And the worst part, our milkshakes. She got a butterfinger one and I got a chocolate chip cookie dough one. Both were nowhere near smooth, they literally felt like they had been left in the freezer for weeks and then heated up to be slightly melted, frostburned slop, and although there were maybe a few crumbs of butterfinger and cookie dough bits on top of the whipped cream, they were basically just vanilla milkshakes (if you can even call that disaster a milkshake). I will NEVER be ordering from this location again, and if the manager or owner has more than just a couple useless braincells, theyd fire the entire staff from the janitor to the managers/supervisors below them, get a brand new team and try again. Since the refit and severe changes to how this once wonderful restaurant did business occurred each visit has lowered my opinion of this establishment. We intended to dine in but once again the dining area was closed. So using the app we placed a carhop order and backed into the appropriate spot to receive. The app said it would be out in :11 to :16 minutes, after 20 I walked to the door to check on it but it was locked. After another:10 I called the number on the receipt and some kid answered and seemed surprised at my inquiry, said he look to see if it was in the window. Another 5 minutes later a girl walked it out. The food was room temperature and the fries gummy. When the girl returned with my wife's ketchup I asked what the delay was and she said it was sitting under a lamp and went unnoticed. I mentioned the food temp and she just stared at me and left. Lesson is if you must have a meal here DON'T use the app!! read more
