My husband and I stopped in for a quick lunch. There was no one in the restaurant. We went to the counter and no-one came out to greet us. We noticed the kiosk to place our order, so we did. After about 5 minutes a small older lady came out, she did not acknowledge us at all. She went to the cook top and started making food. We had not been to a Steak and Shake in a couple of years, and the change was surprising. No more line to get seated before a waitress takes your order. Now there's a line to a kiosk where you place your own order. The menu is much trimmed down, but not the prices. The ambiance inside is gone. The booths don't feel cozy anymore. Gone are the themed products all around. There are small tables that are loosely organized. Overall messy sensation. It's not clean either. Makes me wonder about the kitchen cleanliness. The food was so-so, probably below average and not the same quality we expected. They don't bring your food to you anymore. Like a cafeteria, you have to go get it. The large fried order looked a little shy but they threw in an extra order without blinking. Everything is cheaper now -- plastic utensils, cheaper paper napkins, even gas station-style plastic cups for your namesake deserts. First let me say that I rather enjoy Steak 'n Shake's food, but no one else in my family seems to, so I usually only stop in when I'm alone. I finally convinced my boyfriend to take me a couple weeks ago and they weren't allowing anyone to go in and order. The drive-thru line was about 10-15 cars long, so we went somewhere else. A couple days ago I was just a couple blocks away and alone, so I figured I'd place an online order and go pick it up. I was a little surprised when I didn't see any cars, but it was just after their listed opening time, so I wasn't too concerned. I pulled up front and another car did as well. I tried the door and it was locked. The other car immediately left. That gave me a sinking feeling, but I thought maybe the drive-thru was open, so I tried calling the store. I got no answer. Meanwhile, another customer pulled up to retrieve an online order and seemed just as perplexed as I was. I tried to cancel my order on the app and the hits just kept coming. The only way to cancel is to CALL. THE. STORE. UGH. I called another store and the manager said they're not actually corporate anymore, but they're still connected to "Help Desk", so she took all my information and said she contacted "Help Desk" to let them know that my order needed to be canceled. (Meanwhile, four cars had lined up in the drive-thru after seeing me and the other unfortunate customer trying to figure out what to do in front of the store.) "Help Desk" did not help and I got charged. When the charge hit my bank, there was a phone number, so I called it. I got a message thanking me for calling Steak 'n Shake customer help center and informing me that their offices are currently unavailable. I was contemplating calling my bank, but I did an online search and got another phone number. I began to explain my situation to a barely polite operator who answered the phone, "Steak 'n Shake." She cut me off mid-sentence to tell me she was forwarding my call - which she did without so much as a "Have a nice life." I was forwarded to a more polite operator who took all of my information and told me that a refund would be applied to my card. Now I have to wait a couple of more days to see if it actually works this time. Needless to say, I will not EVER return to this Steak 'n Shake location. read more

Summer, our waitress, was too busy to take our order (my sister over heard her say such)... after 15 min and her taking orders for her other tables I finally got fed up. So sitting next to us was a old family friend and his family of 6. Their waiter was awesome.... so as he finished helping them, I grabbed him... I said I know you are not assigned to our table, but I really want my shake, can you please take over? And he did... he was very knowledgeable, quick on service, and nice. And mine wasn't done by the time the rest of the party had finished so I canceled the order and made myself dinner when I got home - no problem for them since it wasn't even close to done then. My niece and I went after an evening in Nappanee. The place was not busy yet it took quite a while to be seated. When the waitress finally came over to us, she took our drink order and food order. When she brought us our drinks, my coffee cup was filthy. The inside and outside. When I brought this to her attention, she got mad and said the cup was not dirty and what I was seeing came from the coffee pot. REALLY. Then my niece stated her cup had food on the outside. We hadn't been served food yet. She had someone else get my niece's cup and then proceeded to "gripe" very loudly about us. Her language and attitude were not appreciated. We asked to see a manager. He came over and was obviously intimidated by the waitress and agree to be our server from that point on. He brought us our food and clean cups/glasses. My 3 shooters were raw in the center and my nieces chili was burned. I'm talking black and hard crusted burned! When we brought this to his attention, he took it off the bill and that was that. We entered the restaurant and there were dirty dishes on a lot of tables. That should have been a clue! They had an old lady cleaning the tables that could hardly lift the dishes and she was slower than molasses. They finally cleaned a table and we were able to sit down. Jessica was a great waitress. When we got our sandwiches and we did fairly fast; the fries were cold! I asked the adjoining table of 8 and theirs were too; along with a couple other tables! A lady from the kitchen brought us some new that were at least warm (about half the portion size). The grill cook had to quit and run the register; because no one was filling that position and the manager was on the phone. We were reimbursed for our cold fries.
