Typical visit. First time at this particular location. Chili came out within 1 minute of ordering, very unusual for Steak 'n Shake. Food came out about 3 minutes or so later. Everything was made like what we wanted. Cheese wasn't melted on the mushroom and Swiss, and mushrooms were very light. Probably the best Steak and shake I've ever been to. The waitress "Toni" was polite and kept my drinks full and made sure my order was hot and correct. The cook was a woman with red hair. She was on point and my was fresh. There was another young lady working there who prepared my sandwich I think she was a Hispanic lady she was also on point and my sandwich was fresh and had nothing but fresh toppings on top of it. read more

The soda was just carbonated water. The burgers were full of grease. The fries were very cold. I saw a person pull lettuce from a pre-made salad and put a large handful of cheese & carrots in place of the lettuce because they said they were out of lettuce. So to create a picture the salad ordered was cheese, carrots, croutons and not even a hand size of lettuce.I saw someone take payment and not wash their hands but then touch food. There were people not working but on their cell phones. It was a poor service, poor food quality and the restaurant was dirty and run down. I cannot see myself returning to Steak N' Shake again. This place is horrible! I will never visit this location again. All I wanted was a taco salad with their famous steak in it. Placed my order and 40 minutes later the salad shows up from my inept waiter who was eating his own meal and waiting on customers between bites. And guess what was missing from the taco salad?! So why everyone is so surprised by this and previous reviews confuses me. That being said , of all the locations I have visited, this may have been the quickest. This was my first experience at a steak and shake and I loved it! My only complaint is that they don't have any in California so I don't get their milkshakes everyday. The food was good but the milkshakes were pure heaven! Highly suggest all of the flavors but I think the half and half banana chocolate is my favorite. While writing this review, I am considering driving to Vegas just to get a shake! This is a must try place if you like ice cream. read more

This Steak 'n Shake never fails to disappoint my family and I. We came in tonight and the man on the grill was saying the f word loud enough for us to here a few tables away, as a young child was watching him from the bar stools. Saying he refused to remake anything, and saying "shit bruh". Being very unprofessional! The manager I presume was not dressed in uniform, wearing a beanie and a t-shirt & not correcting his behavior while standing right next to this man. Went to the Plainfield Indiana location 12/1/18 at noon, somewhat busy but at first there was only 1 or 2 wait people. Line started forming at door and cash register. Took 1 hour to be served and pay check (1:01:20 PM) Food was cold of course. Waitress worked hard but can't do it all herself. Had a long drive thru line, so I went in to order to go. It took forever. There seemed to be a lot of confusion about who was doing what, because the person taking orders would also disappear to go seat people and sometimes waitress, but then when people's to go orders were ready the people bringing it up from the kitchen wouldn't know who to give the food too, so they'd just call out one item like that made it identifiable for the 6 of us waiting for our orders. I was the 2nd person in line waiting for my food. I watched everyone get their food except me, even helping one group realize their food was ready (so I was paying attention). But then when I was still waiting, a manager went back to check on my order and I just hear a super snide "Well it's not my fault if they aren't paying attention when I call out their order." I got no apology for the wait and I had been waiting up there the whole time. I never saw anyone come forward with food that didn't leave with someone. And even if they did, do you really just stop trying to find the owner of the food and say screw it if people don't respond immediately? Some of the worst service I have ever received. I will say, I saw the manager busting her butt to help out the staff and she handled a disagreement between staff like a pro. My family and I went to steak n shake and after waiting way too long to order, only to order a burger and regular chocolate and vanilla milkshakes. After waiting 20-25 minutes in the drive thru, on the way home I realize my shake isnt chocolate. I went to Steak 'n Shake earlier today and they did not make my chilli 5 way right. I called, they put me on the list to get a new one. Later that day I went in to order a few shakes and to get my Chilli 5 way. I was waiting for 15 minutes inside but then asked if the man on grill if he could please take my order. He came and took my order and then proceeded to keep saying " What do people not see we're busy " and " damn do motherfuckers not see were busy " so then I asked Im sorry but you don't have to talk about me because I asked you to PLEASE take my order. He kept getting loud and kept telling me to just shut up. And to just stop talking. That is HIS job. He could have told me "We're busy we will be right with you" instead of getting mad that I asked him to take my order. Greetings, As part of a collegiate bowling team, we traveled to Indianapolis for the Hoosier Classic, one of the most anticipated tournaments of the year for most teams in the nation. This particular tournament required us to wake up exceptionally early at our hotel, find a place to eat breakfast, and promptly prepare for practice at the bowling center. For breakfast we chose Steak n' Shake. Upon our group of seven entering the empty establishment on Saturday morning, we were spotted by a un-thrilled waitress. She did not appear flattered by our mass in numbers. When we were seated at our table and ordered our beverages and meals, problems occurred. There was no orange juice or parfait, things that I feel should be a staple at any "restaurant" that serves breakfast. One of the members in our group ordered 12 strips of bacon. The waitress seemed unappeased by this alleged "joke". After repeating order again she finally accepted it as a legitimate order with a disgusted look on her face. This was, although an unhealthy choice, an absolutely legitimate order. Another of our group inquired about the ability to remove cheese from the breakfast tacos. The waitress promptly declined the request because of the pre-mixed ingredients and inability to do so. She was short and rude with us. This was the quickest response she provided during our entire experience. On Sunday, we decided to go back to the same Steak n' Shake in another attempt to grab a quick breakfast before the second day of our tournament. Time was shorter than normal that day because of a winter storm that covered the streets in fresh snow and ice. Getting a quick and fresh meal was a main priority. As we exited our vans and entered the facility again, we waited alone in the foyer to be seated. There did not appear to be anyone that noticed our entry. We manage to flag someone down who was working in the kitchen to talk to us. Without leaving the kitchen, the woman explained to us that they did "not have any breakfast ready". I was very confused by this statement. She did not say why or even how long. She seemed very short and her intentions were clear, to get us out of the diner. How is breakfast not ready for a 24-hour open establishment at 6:20 in the morning? That was the golden question. We promptly left without food directly to the bowling center. Overall, I applaud the Steak 'n Shake franchise on their involvement in their local community and goal to serve indulging home-cooked meals to the masses by welcoming and pleasant employees. Unfortunately, from our experiences, I cannot say the same for this particular Franchisee. Simply put, we felt unwelcomed from the moment we entered the facility to the time we left on both days. How do you expect a business to thrive when the waitresses do not fully believe in what the franchise stands for? Why do you question what we order and eat? Why is there no breakfast "ready" at a restaurant that serves breakfast at 6:00am in the morning? The response given to us Sunday was that they don't "have any breakfast ready" is absolutely the worst thing that could have been spoken in that situation. This is unacceptable for any business seeking to succeed in the market. When I enter a diner, I expect my food to NOT be ready. I expect it to be cooked freshly when I order. So please tell me how there is no breakfast "ready"? I understand food needs to be prepared before the kitchen is open, but why was this not done before our arrival? Especially since this is a 24-hour restaurant. In my opinion this was a ploy to get our large group out of the restaurant. It certainly worked. Does Steak n' Shake even want my money? I feel as though this establishment should be avoided. The food we were served was delicious, cheap, yet deceiving. For a sit-down meal, do not expect to be greeted kindly and whole-heartedly.
