My sister and I arrived, we had a gift card we planned to use. One front door was locked. NO register manned by an employee. Kiosk ordering only, and told the kiosk would not take gift card, but we could go get in car, go to drive thru and use gift card. WE WANTED TO SIT INSIDE AND EAT!!! The dining room is still kiosk orders only. Why? That is the charm of a steak 'n shake; the waiter/customer interaction. Food was just okay. Prices are high, like everywhere else. No one in the dining room. The cooks were cussing loudly and it clearly is not a family atmosphere like it once was. Really sad to see an iconic restaurant go to such poor standards. 40 minutes for wrong food that was cold after 3 tries at the drive thru. Had to look really hard for the second small burger. They need smaller rolls because the hamburgers are not anywhere near in size. Also need smaller containers for fries and rings since they look half full. Be sure and double check your order before leaving parking lot or you'll pay for things you might not have gotten. Seriously the worst customer service by the lady who answered the phone and even worse by the manager of this establishment! 13 days ago when I placed the order online and it switched my pick up to this location (45 minuets away from me) and I didn't realize until I had checked out. Immediately when I saw the address was wrong I called, as the email said any problems call the store directly, which I did, and explained the situation and the woman was adamant there was nothing she could do. I asked to talk to the manager to which he did not get on the phone call but relayed to her saying he would cancel it, and I would get a refund and three to five days later. I called back asked to speak to the manager who had in fact answered the phone said I remembered you you'll have to wait the few business days I did what I could. Here we are 13 days later. I'm still waiting and nothing has been done and I don't think I'll ever get my refund so don't eat here, don't make a mistake by ordering online here, cause heaven forbid you have to go through this atrocity like me. read more

If I could give this negative stars I would. We quickly made a choice before going tree hunting that we would grab a quick burger, what a terrible choice. There was one waiter that was struggling to survive all on his own. I felt bad for him, he was in good spirits and trying hard but he was hung out to dry by management. The restaurant was dirty and unkept. You can see behind the employee area where the iced tea and side is. There was garbage on the ground, water or something gross all over the ground. It was grimy and looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a long while. Bathrooms were even worse, I don't want to even get into that. The food took forever to come out but half of our order was sitting in the window for pick up for about 10 minutes. It's Steak and Shake. You should know what you're getting here. It's been years since I've been to one, but what I love is it never changes. Layout, decor, uniforms and the same menu. They don't try to be something they're not. Sure. Some new toppings for burgers or milkshakes may be added, but It's still largely fries, burgers and shakes. And they've added some fancier burgers for those that don't like the thin patties they serve. One of my guilty pleasures is a Frisco melt. Something about thin burger patties with melted gooey cheese and thousand island sauce wedged between two buttery pieces of grilled sourdough bread takes me to a happy place. Yeah I got that. It's been my go to for years. I got Cajun seasoning added to my fries and that was good. Yes. The fries are skinny, but still tasty. And knowing I can't finish a whole shake I drank almost half of my husband's chocolate covered strawberry milkshake which I originally told him I would take two sips out of. It was just that good. Our service was great. We were seated instantly. Our server was friendly, checked on us a lot and very attentive. And at the beginning of our visit when I ordered my drink, she looked at me and told me I was beautiful. Having no makeup on and a long day, it was good to hear. It was a very casual relaxing meal. The patty melt looks pretty ugly it actually tasted pretty good. Not the best but at least worth to pay something for it. The fries were good but the microwave bacon is super salty and cheese whiz didn't help with that. I got my food after about 8-10 mins but didn't receive my shake which was just vanilla until 20 mins. The staff was generally rude not to people but they talked like they didn't care. This older couple had a drink fall over and they took a few mins too clean the mess and didn't even apologize to them and get her a fresh drink for 5 mins. It's been a long time since we'd gone to Steak and Shake and this is actually one of my faves (not this location but in general). We stopped by on the way to Charlotte and as we walked in - a sign prompting us to order thru the kiosks, which was fine with us. Then since we decided to eat-in we realized that there's no longer a waiter/service help ( at this location-Rockhill SC off-I77). We sat and waited for our food and was brought in to us. Food was served in disposables now. My fave- which was the chili-Mac did not have the cheese and onions that it normally comes in ( which I indicated on my kiosk's order and paid the .99c extra). We came around 1AM after going to Scarowinds and I know Steak 'n shake isn't known for their A+ service. However, our server was Julius and he was the BEST server I've ever had. He told us he was on his last table and was about to leave, but he still served our large table of 10. We also watched as he dealt with an extremely (annoying) customer and he handled it like a champ. Julius was polite, attentive, and had such quick service despite having a fellow server storm out on him so he had to pull extra weight. Only one other booth had people finishing their meal when we arrived at 7:37 p.m. this evening (Wednesday) but it still took a few minutes before my lovely wife and I were acknowledged and seated. Within 5 minutes we were the only two customers in the restaurant. After 20 minutes (and still the only two customers in the restaurant), a drive through customer (at least we think she was a drive through customer) came storming into the restaurant and walked straight to the cash register/counter hollering and cussing at an employee in the kitchen area, calling them out and threatening to do violence to them. Then she stormed back out of the restaurant. My wife and I simultaneously looked at one another, got up and walked out (of course we hadn't placed our order yet so it was the obvious choice). Later my wife told me "You couldn't have forced me to stay there." Two employees (both women) had been deeply involved in conversation behind the counter near the cash register for the entire 20 minutes that we were waiting to place our order. As we were walking out, one of them (the "red head") asked us "You leavin'?" When I answered "Yes", she said "I don't blame you!" The reason we drove 20 extra minutes to come to this location is because less than 3 months ago there was a shooting inside the Steak 'n Shake closer to our home where a wonderful man and longtime Steak'n Shake employee was murdered. We've never felt very comfortable at that other location (South Blvd, Charlotte N.C.), and now we're having to scratch this Cherry Road, Rock Hill S.C. location off our list too. If I had seen the other reviews here on Yelp beforehand, we'd never have come here in the first place. I'll bet the Illinois founders of Steak 'n Shake would have been HORRIFIED had they lived to see what has become of some of their restaurants. read more

Prices are average and they offer a huge variety of different flavored milk shakes for about 3.50ish each. From snickers flavored to banana strawberry, to milkshakes split in two different flavors. I got the mint cookies n cream and it was great! Lots of flavor and cookie chunks and topped with whipped cream, Oreo like cookies & a cherry. If it was possible to give less than 1 star I would do it. This location consistently provides poor customer service and even worse food service. I ordered two shakes, one birthday cake flavored and the other snickers flavored and they put both snickers and birthday cake in both shakes. This is a huge issue because the birthday cake shake was for my girlfriend who is deathly allergic to peanut butter. Thankfully I noticed this and made sure she didn't eat it. That alone is completely unacceptable and very dangerous, but that's just the beginning. My next visit to this location the lady taking my order punched my order in incorrectly after multiple times of telling her what my order was at the intercom. (A burger with everything on it) I pulled around to get my order and she asks me if I wanted everything on my burger and I said yes. After rolling her eyes she hands me a bag with a burger in it, then yells something to someone in the back. She grabs a cup puts all the toppings for a burger in a cup and then hands me the cup without saying anything. I asked what the cup was and she explained how they didn't make the burger right. She then blames me for not telling her it was supposed to have everything on it. I asked if she could just make the burger correctly to which she replied, "No, you have to make this your own.." Pros: Open 24/7, not expensive, casual setting, okay place just to hang out if you don't have much to do elsewhere, milkshakes are pretty good, waiters are always nice and give good service! Cons: The food can take a long time, even simple orders on slow days. The fries are so thin and flavorless, and the burgers are tough. The food is just not impressive and there are many other places I'd pick over Steak N Shake. If you don't have any place to go late at night but still want to go out, it's not a bad place to be.
