Despite the horrible reviews on yelp, we stopped in for lunch and we were greeted by the sweetest lady in the world named Carol, who just so happened to be the only worker who came in this morning. By herself she made sure everyone in the busy restaurant was taken care of, even double checking with customers to make sure they had straws or needed drink carriers. I don't know why the reviews are so bad on here, she said she's only been here 6 weeks so the other employees must've trained her very well. We need more Carols instead of Karen's in this world. read more

My girlfriend and I were gonna eat somewhere else that had milkshakes, sadly they ran out, so my girlfriend asked if we could go to steak and shake for food and a milkshake, and I said yeah. We got there and it all seemed fine. Busy enough, servers were moving around. We got to our seats, and we ordered. We waited 40 minutes for our food, and we only ordered 2 milkshakes and 2 chicken fingers. When we finally got our food. I felt like I was lied to. I've only ate at shake twice. The chicken fingers on the menu looked big enough to eat as a full meal. The chicken fingers I got were twice as small. My girlfriend gave me two of hers since I was still hungry, and no I am not a fatso. Between her fries and mine, hers was fine while mine tasted stale. Right after she gave us the food, she asked for any dressing, we said ranch. Apparently her English translates to getting nothing. So we never got our ranch. She never came to check up on us to see if the food is good or not, and we didn't want to bother the other servers about it since we assumed they were busy. I went to the bathroom to blow my nose. The sensors to get the paper towels didn't even WORK. I tried every possible position, and it didn't even register, so I left the bathroom without blowing my nose. My girlfriend and I were waiting in the line to get our food paid, there was only a family in front of us. Apparently it took us 10 minutes to finally get to the register. I don't know whether it was the family being slow, or the cashier was too high being on the register and was making a ton of mistakes. (By the way, it was the same person who was our server). We finally got to the cashier and didn't even leave a tip. I used the gift card and thank god it was a gift card. I told my gf to cancel the tip, and the cashier noticed and gave a smug smile to us. We burst out laughing once we got out of there. The story doesn't end there. My gf liked the shakes, so she wanted to go through the drive through to get some shakes. We asked for the same order, once we got our shakes, she got wrong order. Instead of getting an Oreo mint, she got a cookie dough milkshake. She doesn't like cookie dough milkshake, and we waited at that same spot, hoping they noticed we were waiting. After 10 minutes we gave up. I suggest to through the milkshake out the window right next to the restaurant, but she calmly drove us over to a nearby gas station to throw it away. We checked the receipt to see if they put in the cookie dough, BUT NOTHING WAS ON IT BUT THE CASH WE PAID. This was by far, the worst service we ever came across. We wasted an hour and 30 minutes and we could've went to Wendy's and got our food within 10 minutes. Never going there again. read more

One of the dirtiest places I have ever seen, an the service is absolutely horrible. People leaving because don't feel like waiting the 15 minutes it's taking for anyone to come take order when the place isn't even half full. Sitting for over 45 minutes an still no food. People walk in with a party of six an can't sit together because not one person can clean the table, left Over from the last customers. Pretty disappointed for first time!! This place absolutely sucks!!! I wish I would have read all of the reviews, damn you would think they would learn from the complaints. I must say after reading them, I agree. The service was absolutely terrible. Went there last night, and there were people waiting inside and some were leaving. it wasn't that busy. The people in front of us got seated but we stood there waiting for another few minutes, another couple came in and we stood awhile longer. Nobody came and sat us. Finally one of the servers was messing with the credit card machine and the people behind us asked if we could just pick a spot and sit, the lady said no then a few minutes later she comes up there grabs menus , slams them down on to seperate tables and tells us and the couple behind us to sit. We waited another 15-20 minutes. No server came to our table, wasn't even asked what to drink nothing. Got tired of the shit and left. I've seen busier places with faster service. won't be going back anytime soon read more

Please do us a favor and close this one permanently. Party of 3 walks in around 8:15 p.m. waits 8 minutes to be served and no one cared. They all stayed in the back talking to each otger and playing on they're cell phones. Never once acknowledged us. We left and they didn't blink an eye. I've enjoyed this companies products over many states for many years but this particular operation needs to close. Horrible experience. Practically had to beg to even be acknowledged, much less seated, and served. Went to the bar after the people in front of us said they had been waiting 5 minutes to be seated even though half the tables were open. No one said a word to us at the bar either. Had to get up and leave before I told the staff how bad of a job they were doing. Should have checked yelp before we went there. Do not waste your time with this Steak and Shake. It is really not worth your time. They are so disorganized, it is amazing people go to this location. There as so many other restaurants in the area that are so much better. Extremely long wait times, hostess skipped us over three times and when I finally asked, she had marked us off the list. She just apologized and offered to put us back on the wait list. Total wait 35 minutes so far. I then asked to talk to the manager. She came over and looked annoyed. She asked what was wrong and I told her about the wait time and being skipped over on the list. She said she was sorry and told me she would make sure we weren't skipped over in the future. That's it. Not even a we will get you seated right away... 45 minutes of time wasted and we left to go eat elsewhere. read more

The food was not bad tasting for a fast food sit down restaurant. The value was great. I was even able to find a coupon for buy 1 get 1 free shakes. We arrived about 10 on a Saturday night. The place was extremely crowded and several tables needed cleaned. We had a brief wait before we were seated. The waitress was up front and said she was the only one waiting he entire place... wow that is a lot of tables for 1 person. Luckily I saw some great teamwork.. there was another staff who was supposed to be out @ 8 helping out plus the bus person helped serve . Great teamwork. Not sure why they didn't have help but if it a manager being cheap... shame on them. Considering the staffing levels it was clean. The shakes were satisfying and plenty of choices. Worth the stop and value. Would have gave it 4 had it been better staffed. read more

One star because I never got the chance to even eat here! I stood in the waiting area for 10 minutes waiting to be seated but all the waiters & waitresses were in their own world either by the back or going straight to their already established tables and back to.. the back. I understand the restaurant flow of things, but no one greeted me as I walked inside or even acknowledged my presence. I've had such bad times at steak and shakes not sure why I keep going back. Stood at the entrance watching waitresses walk by us for 3 minutes. Finally seated and got drink order taken. My friends shake didn't come out until 15/20 minutes later when we got our food and it was the wrong shake anyway but we ate it since didn't want to wait anymore. Ordered chicken strips and fries and a vegetable soup. The soup didn't come out until after our meal and the chicken strips were so small, not like they usually are from there. How I missed Steak N Shake. This particular location is clean and offers great service. If you have NEVER been to steak n shake, stop by! Their milkshakes are OUT OF THIS WORLD! Thick, full of flavor, BIG and CHEAP! Their burgers are pretty good and their special sauce is delicious as well. Did I also mention juicy chicken? So I always enjoy their food and shakes, but service is just so lousy. Out of a staff of like 8 servers it just feels like only 2 of them are even working. Our drink orders were taken about 15 minutes after we sat down. Our food orders were taken at the same time which is never a good sign. The food came out maybe 20 minutes later and our shakes came out maybe 10 minutes after that. There were a few errors with the food, a forgotten chili and once we got it, it did not have cheese or onions. Took us about 10 minutes to get a server over to fix the chili. Our shakes were all sorts of messed up. They forgot about 2 of them, and brought out one that was completely wrong. They fixed the wrong one within maybe 5 minutes and brought one of the forgotten ones out at the same time. However they then forgot the other missing one again. Finally got all of our shakes and they were good, of course. By then we were all done with the food already, so we wanted some boxes and to go cups. Aaaand long story short, had to go to the counter and pay to finally get some boxes. If you have time and don't care about service, Steak 'n Shake always has reliably good food and great shakes for a good price. Just don't expect timely service or quick responses haha read more

Good news first! Food was delicious, service was decent, and our server was really kind. Everyone who works here was amazing and we talked to them for a little while. Bad news now. The floors were really dirty and in need of serious mopping and shining. Fries, straw wrappers, etc were smashed into the floor. A group of 4 of us walked in at around 10:30 at night. There were three other tables occupied. We were seated immediately. However, that's where the great service ends. It took the one waitress 40 minutes to even look into the dining room, and that was to bring out another tables order. After another 20 minutes, the rudest, sassiest waitress I have ever seen walked out and took our order, and never asked for drinks. The waitress didn't know the menu either. After another 30 minute wait, our food finally came out. The waitress tried to apologize but here early actions rendered this null. We left promptly after finishing our food in five minutes. We left Summit Motorsports Park late, go stuck in traffic and were starving. Being that this was one of only a handful of places open, we stopped. First, they've discontinued malts. What kind of a shake place doesn't have malts? Of course, we didn't find this out when my husband ordered a malt, but rather when the waitress showed up with a chocolate milk instead of a chocolate malt. It took forever to get our food, and when it came out, the sauce for my and my daughter's tenders was missing. Our fries were cut so thin and fried so heavily that I though we were eating those canned, dried potato sticks. The tenders were ok, but a little over cooked too. After dropping off our food and, at the same time, our check, we never saw our waitress again. I'm not sure if the service is usually this slow (looks that way from the reviews) or of we just ended up with a very tired, very inexperienced staff, but I wish we had just gone thru the McDonald's drive thru. read more

Stay away! Wasted an hour of our trip at this location just waiting for food. We kept getting assurances that it would be right out and no dice. Do not waste your time especially if on a trip. The lost time and frustration was not worth the low cost and acceptable food. Also waited 10 minutes to be seated and 10 minutes just to pay. Worst waiting game of my life. Visiting from Indiana. Ordered 2 combos. Didn't get the French fries, was told they had to charge me 29 cents per ketchup. The Frisco bread wasn't even toasted. we ordered Onion rings as well they were cold and mostly breading. When I called they told me I could come back and get the fries. They could not offer me money back since you only pay $1 for the fries. My bill was 20 for two cold sandwiches 2 milkshakes and a container of onion breading. Their customer service is horrible as well as their service. Waited for over 10 minutes after ordering to receive cold food and missing fries. I Do not recommend this restaurant when visiting Sandusky. This was even during happy hour between 2-5 for 1/2 off shakes. read more

We went in on an extremely busy night right after what we assumed was homecoming. Got advised by the hostess to seat ourselves at the bar so we would get better service since there were apparently only two waitresses covering the whole place at the moment. Sat down, and I'm pretty sure it was the manager who was tending to us. She was extremely nice, hospitable, and attentive. Our order was up in not too long and the food was great. Salt n Vinegar fries are delicious is you are actually a vinegar lover, otherwise it may be too strong for you. Anything that has the garlic sauce or garlic mayo is delicious (I had the Portabello Swiss burger). Food was great and service was great for us. The manager seemed like a responsible woman, so hopefully she can improve upon the complaints of the other reviews (but the place didn't seem too dirty from what I saw). read more

Terrible experience! Came in for breakfast at 7 AM as their only eat in customer and was told the cook was the night cook and did not know how to make eggs/hash browns as shown on the table placard. Not feeling confident at this point, I ordered a patty melt from the dinner menu. Very undercooked, felt terrible afterwards. Had to ask for silverware. Coffee was cold (first cup). The waitress apologized for the issues, and she seemed sincere, explaining that there was high turnover in the kitchen. A few months ago when I was last in the area, I had nearly the same experience (the coffee was hot and fresh, same cooking issue). Went to this restaurant with my daughter waited nearly an hour for our food. As a former restaurant manager I always take a clean restaurant seriously and this was a just a shame. the cleanliness of the kitchen was disgusting. the cook used the same gloves to handle raw meat and cooked meat. was disappointed in how it was handled. the server was amazing. But will not return due to the cleanliness and cooking procedures. Kitchen line doesn't looked like it had been cleaned in months with grease buildup and meat juice. No hand washing or changing of gloves in the full hour we were there as he touched buns cooked meat and raw meat. Ketchup and mustard bottles were caked with dried yuck on the outside. Our food took forever to come out. We ordered cups of water with our milkshakes and we never got our water. We got our milkshakes about an hour after we were seated and then we got our food about half an hour later. Also the floor is dirty and my friend found gunk on her napkin. The most horrible Steak 'n Shake ever. On our way back to our hotel we stopped here for a quick bite to eat. We ordered combos and they forgot the fries, then the idiot taking orders at the window said the combos didn't come with fries. After explaining to her that it was a combo even after she gave us our soda that fries came with the combo she said, "Ohhhh, yes they do, but I don't know if it does... I didn't hear you." Literally the worst service I've ever had. Under-staffed at night for a location so close to cedar point and a nonexistent waitress... it's just not worth the well over an hour it took to get our food after being sat down. Was incredibly patient until we got our food and most of it was wrong so we left without even eating. You'd get your food quicker at Levin Mattress down the street. I'd give. Them a zero if it was an option... Awful service and nothing was right!! Ordered online which said pick up at 8:32 arrive at 8:30 and food wasn't done until 9:00!! Not only that but the double bacon cheeseburger we ordered came with one sliver of a patty no cheesy 3 small crumbs of bacon no lettus no tomatoe. The kids cheese burgers we ordered came with no cheese and the one patty was literally cut in half!! Just terrible and no apologize for the wait either!! read more
