Oye Vey. I hate giving out one star reviews. Absolutely hate doing it...but in the case of good ole Steak N Shake...it needs to be done. First off, I heart steak n shake. I went to college in St. Louis and they are all over the place, so when Steak N Shake started popping up in the Denver area, I was so excited! Then we got a huge sheet of coupons in the mail and I was even more stoked to get there and get my absolute favorite american melt and cheese fries with a side by side shake. My excitement soon faded after arriving at this location.It was a Friday night and they were pretty busy. First complaint: There is very little seating available to customers who are waiting for a table. There is one bench which can hold three (maybe four) people. We stood around, with a car seat no less, being bumped into by servers walking by and shuffling around to make room for more people coming in to wait. Second: There was only two of us (and baby), so we told the hostess that we wouldn't mind sitting at a two top and holding the baby (there was actually a two top open). She said ok, but then never seated us. A few minutes later, a couple of teenage guys come in and she seats them immediately at the table we just said we would be willing to take. We were dumbfounded. Third: A family of four came in and were seated immediately. Again, we are confused. At this point, my brother approaches the hostess and asks if perhaps she has forgotten us and wondering why others who came in after us were seated before us (it had been about 25 minutes by now). She said "it's ok, don't worry about it". Huh?? Finally, we are seated a a two top in a back corner...and our server has no idea we are there. I can;t really blame her, it was hard to see our table from pretty much anywhere in the restaurant. So, another ten minutes goes by...and finally our server sees us and apologizes profusely. Meanwhile, the aforementioned teenagers are already paying for their meal and that family of four was receiving their food. Hungry + ignored makes for some very frustrated people. My food was horrible. Not at all what I remember Steak N Shake being like in my college days. My bread was cold and not grilled like it's supposed to be. I ended up trashing most of it. I did speak to the manager about these issues and he was extremely apologetic. Oh, one last thing for any moms and dads of babies out there...they DO NOT have a changing station. This place is just terrible nothing but bad experiences. A month ago we were in the drive through for more than an hour waiting for our meal. We understand the fast food business can be tough and we were very understanding. But then we get our order and it's completely messed up. An hour wait and they couldn't get it right...... we go back inside and they "fix" our order but never give us our three fries for the meals. At that point we decided to leave. Then I went back today at 4am and the lady says they are closed for "maintenance" but this restaurant clearly says open and is 24hours. Like wtf get your shit together. Not being from the Midwest, I had never had Steak N Shake until I started driving cross country regularly during college. It was almost always my stop of choice to grab food, the other being Roy Rogers. I just had a thing for these restaurants as neither existed in NY or CA. Anyway, I'd stop in at Steak N Shake and get a Double n' Cheese with their tasty, thin and crispy fries and I'd get a double fudge or a vanilla shake. It was a treat I enjoyed about 4 or 5 times a year. We had debated going to Steak N Shake for a while and finally gave in after a movie recently. It was OK. I ordered what the Double n' Cheese meal with a vanilla shake and B did the same with a Strawberry Shake. Both meals were tasty, nothing spectacular, but tasty. However, they've changed the decor of Steak N Shake and eating in is very uncomfortable. I don't ever remember the locations I went to being so brightly lit. With that said, I like the fact that the cooking area is open and customers can see the food being prepared. Oh and the place gets crowded. Really crowded. I wouldn't wait very long, if at all, for a table. Honestly, if I get food from them again it will be drive through. read more

While I stand by my previous post about the ridiculousness of waiting in the drive-through line for 25 minutes+, I have an update. We came here this past weekend for a shake, and I advised the husband that my previous experience of getting fries took 25 minutes in the drive-through, so we should just go in and wait instead. I'm very glad we did. The staff was friendly which is always a plus. We were approached by a few different servers throughout our visit to make sure we were taken care of. That was a nice touch. We ordered a shake and fries, and much to my expectation, it took about 30 minutes to get it. While waiting, we had a chance to view the kitchen in action. I was impressed by the burger maker who kept the line moving and his grill nice and clean. Also, he pressed down on the burger patty, which if you hear these commercials for "Smashburger" smashing their burgers, well, watch the guy at SNS who does the exact same thing... The floor of the kitchen could use a mopping every few hours though. It was a bit dirty. The shake was pretty darn good, though the fries weren't too fantastic. They were lukewarm, but I still ate them all. I'm sure we'll be back for a regular meal, but be forewarned - it's not for those in a rush. read more

My first visit to a Steak N Shake will probably be my last. It was promptly greeted and offered a seat at the counter. Took nearly 15 minutes for a waitress to acknowledge me. After finally visiting one of these I understood what my boyfriend was talking about! Extremely cheap food brought to you by a server in an old timey diner atmosphere. I stuck with the original cheeseburger with fries & a chocolate oreo milkshake. It was one of the best fast food burgers I have ever had! Juicy & perfect serving size. I love to add condiments and/or sauces to anything I eat so I was excited to have season salt for my fries & hot pepper sauce on the table for me! The food was great but the wait to get in & the wait for the food was not the best. This location recently opened up & the line to get in was ridiculous! We drove a bit to get there & ended up waiting over 30 minutes for a table. I would suggest they either build more locations or make them much bigger! I have been wanting to try Steak 'n Shake and got some coupons in the mail so I thought why not. Love this place! The staff was very friendly. I was getting my order to go and had about a 10 minute wait which wasn't bad. I sat at the counter and played on my phone. The best part--the food. The steakburgers my fiancé and I got were SO good. This place needs to try a LOT harder. I only went here because my son wanted to. We both like Freddy's better, but this was closer and I only had an hour. We were going to go to the drive thru, but the line was wrapping, so we went inside. I ordered (2 people) and we eventually had to tell them we needed it to go because it was taking so long. I have no idea what they were doing back there, but the place was 25% full inside at best. It took over 30 minutes to get two burgers and fries, from a place that only does burgers and fries. Now the food. My son's burger was missing the cheese, my tea somehow got canceled off the order, and my "seasoned" fries, which they charge $.30 more for, were regular fries with just some seasoning sprinkled on the top of the fry box. Beyond the very top, they were regular fries. My portobello burger was pretty gross. Soggy, greesy, and tasteless. I don't blame the waitress, but that kitchen is clearly favoring the drive thru and ignoring those at the table. The place wasn't packed though and that's a pretty big grill back there. We have a gift card from my mother in law that we have been attempting to use! I've been to a Steak 'n Shake back in Ohio. It was my late grandfathers favorite place to eat. The service was always quick and precise as far as getting what was asked for. Now, I'm not a picky person or a snobby person. I've worked in food service before for a long time and I know what to expect. But to have to ask 3 times for a high chair for a toddler who refuses to sit down, and for our server see me leave with a restless child to be sure that everyone else isn't having to listen to a small screaming child, should have been an indicator of "oh, hey I need to grab a high chair." That being said it was lunch rush hour, he may have been alone on the floor, but know when you have to ask for help from either your hostess who wasn't doing anything at the point in time, or the manager who is free to help. I shouldn't have to get up, search for a high chair myself and take it to my table. I'm giving this particular location at River Front in Lakewood 3 stars for the fact that my Guacamole double steak burger was freakin amazing! Perfect amount of spicy kick and superbly juicy and cooked to perfection. My husbands burger was just as delicious and our kiddo was satisfied with her grilled cheese. The wait would have been forgivable if they didn't totally screw up my order. I asked for a chocolate peanutbutter shake. I got a peanutbutter cup and m&m shake. WRONG. I also asked for a foot long hot dog with ONLY ketchup. I got a foot long hot dog with mustard as well as fries. AGAIN WRONG! Having not eaten since 12pm I am frustrated. I'm from a suburb of St. Louis so I grew up with Steak N Shake. At the time it was a huge part of your high school experience. Friday night, CURB service and sitting and watching cars and friends go by. I knew that part of the experience could not be replicated so I chose not to drive over immediately and wait for hours. So I waited a couple of months, was in the area of Park Meadows and thought I would give it a shot. Amazed at the length of the lines even then but opted for drive through. Hurt my heart a bit. Drive thru just felt wrong. I craved a burger and fries, the shakes were never that big of a deal and that created a problem. Excited for my first bite...I was so disappointed that it was cold. Seems my order got made quickly and then sat while other orders in front of mine held up the line with those shakes. Sadly...that cold burger did NOTHING for me and I haven't been back. I knew not to expect the repeat of my memories but I don't think I had ever been served a cold burger in all the years I had eaten there through my teens and twenties. :( I gave it three stars...the potential is there. We went through the drive thru and the first problem is that she cashier at the window barely had the window open long enough to tell us the total, and then charged us for the wrong order. When I stated that it was the wrong order, she just closed the window again and the person I presume is the manager tapped a few buttons on the register and then the cashier charged us again, and the total ended up being an extra dollar more than our original total. Then when we received our food, we noticed that we were missing two items. When we had placed the order, the person who took our order verified our order l, which was correct. But by the time we had gotten up to the window, there was clearly some miscommunication. When we told the cashier that we were missing the two items, she told us that we did not order those items and that she had given us all our food. When we asked to speak to the manager, the cashier started laughing at us and slammed the window closed. The manager came to the window and said she couldn't issue a refund "due to corporate policy." When I said we just wanted our food, she took our bag back and looked through it. We watched as she looked around and put the missing food in our bag, and then gave us the bag back. Then I asked the cashier for the missing drink and she still tried to argue with us that we were not missing anything, all the while laughing, as if it was a funny situation. We finally got our missing drink. And to top it all off, the cashier said "okay, bitch" not quite under her breath, so I could still hear it. This is not the first bad experience I have had here, and I keep trying to give them the benefit of the doubt, but it seems like every time I go is worse than the last time. read more

Went in at 11:45pm, I ordered online and my order should have been ready at 11:48pm. We sat in the lobby until 12:20am before asking for a refund. The drive thru line was at least 15 cars long, and everyone inside looked agitated. The woman working said she couldn't find her order, then told us she found it, and then came back and said it disappeared. When asking for the refund I sat in the bar stools facing the kitchen, I can't express how disgusting the kitchen was. Staff pre-made tons of shakes and they were sitting there in a sea of receipts. While being there a staff member threw away 10 shakes from the freezer, they were at least siting there for 40 minutes. Food was all over the floor, buns were pulled from a drawer sitting on the floor. The staff member on the grill had a burgers prepared sitting on a shelf with nothing underneath it (I'm assuming for drive thru customers) it looked so disgusting. Another staff member came from the back to make another shake and I noticed he grabbed a used metal cup and started putting the shake ingredients in it. There was a pile of dirty metal cups, and he just picked one up and started putting ice cream in it. Honestly this place does not need to be open 24 hours, they are violating so many health codes, I am worried that people are going to start getting sick. read more
