Haven't been here in a long time and decided to try the drive thru. Bad news is even though I'm the only car in line, they got my sandwich wrong. Good news is that it was hot & fresh. The worst food ever we placed and order through drive thru. We order the Original Steak burger with Cheese (LUKEWARM) with Grilled Onions and Ketchup but had asked for Grilled Onions and Pickles and Fries (COLD FRIES). We also order a cup of Chili that tastes like someone had dump a container of Salt. We had order one Chili 5-Way got 2 and (VERY COLD) and had NO TASTE BUT HAD WAY TO MUCH SALT. Steak 'n Shake is cheap and it shows in the food. That's completely fair given that a meal can cost only $4. My issues come with how everything was handled. Our shakes took the longest to come out. We didn't get them until about halfway through eating. Also, I didn't get a cookie included in the 4 for $4. When I asked about it, they just said "sorry we are all out." It would've been nice to get some sort of compensation or alternative, but I did not. Lastly, when we were done it took ages to get our bill. We had to go find our waitress even after they took our plates. read more

I have always had a great experience with this restaurant but unfortunately that did not happen here, today. I can understand when there is an understaff and even though I can appreciate the hard work of the employees there, I don't think your service should pay the price. The place needs immediate attention making sure the quality of the service doesn't have to be sacrificed. The tables need to be cleaned and ready to eat on, the training proper food handling. All I will say if you don't have the staff to upkeep the place then don't open for business, it is unfortunate as Steak 'n Shake is a unique diner. This is the absolute worst experience I've ever had in a drive-thru. Myself and three of my family members came here after our trip to the Notre Dame football game on Saturday, October 28th. There was a bit of a line in the drive-through but we placed our order and we waited literally 45 minutes (with no exaggeration). It was so ridiculous that I told my group that we should just drive off but because my pregnant sister was craving burgers and fries, we waited. Once we finally pulled up to the drive-thru window, we didn't even receive a "hello" or a "sorry for the wait." We were immediately greeted with "what did you order?" The lady said that there were two cars in front of us that pulled off and messed up the orders. In my mind, all I could think of was that if two cars in front of us pulled off then why were we waiting for 45 minutes!? Once we finally received our food, our burgers were cold as if they were sitting there waiting for us for 45 min too. After a 45 minute drive thru wait, I would've expected, at least, for our food to be fresh. Slowest and most unprofessional service and low quality. Will never return to this location. read more

Went in around 11:30 at night and every table was nasty, so nasty we had to take our food to go. We were wondering when they planned to clean tables and sweep the floor. Take a look at my photo that I've attached.....the guy that was making the burgers was doing a good job, my question is why did they have a full trash can right there with the food?. I remember when this location opened many years back. Of all the local Steak n Shakes, this one was top of the list. But as time has gone on, the service and food has got worse and worse. On my most recent experience, me and my (pregnant) sister stood at the front of the restaurant for 10 minutes waiting to be seated ... when there were seats available ... and plenty of staff working. I guess because it was someone else's job, people didn't feel obligated to help out. The bathrooms were also dank and nasty. They need to be 1) cleaned; and 2) ventaliated. Nowadays, the food is just greasy and salty and not satisfying anymore. I walked out last time feeling full, but also hungry because I didn't eat anything but sodium, sugar, grease, and carbs. There was no actual nutrients to anything I ate. I also really don't understand the purpose of combining everyone's orders onto one single check, and then having to spend 5 minutes figuring out which "seat" you are. It may be my ignorance of running a restaurant, but it would make more sense to me to just split up the checks for instances when there will be more than 1 form of payment. read more

Ordered a triple burger, nearly as much grease on my plate as there was burger. 5 people in kitchen, appeared to be total confusion. Steak and Shake is always very good. The $4 meal deal is good, and the open kitchen has been a S&S thing for decades. No longer a drive in, or done up in 1950s style, the place has just put in place a 12 midnight breakfast start date. I had the Southern Skillet. THIS REVIEW IS MOST DEFINITELY FOR THE 933 LOCATION NEXT TO THE TOLL ROAD! I used to really like Steak and Shake. But, in the last few years I almost always have trouble at this restaurant. Why do I go back? Well, every 6 months or so I get a taste for Steak and Shake (and the coupons in the mail) and I think "maybe I'll give them another chance", I went in again tonight, FAIL!!! I sat down at the counter and ordered the Steak and Shake meal (double burger, fries, beans and a shake), no cheese on the burger. I always sit at the counter so I can watch the cooks and I saw him put cheese on my burger (they weren't busy so it was easy to tell it was my order being prepared). I didn't say anything because I wasn't 100% sure it was mine, but the cook or my waiter must have caught the mistake because I saw them set the cheese burger aside and start making another double burger for me. After 5-7 minutes my food came and my fries had a thick, gloppy "cheese sauce" all over them (which of course, I did not order). I pointed THIS mistake out to the cook and he took my plate away and within 30 seconds brought it back with plain fries. The fries were SUPER-SATURATED with grease/oil. There was a puddle of grease/oil beneath the fries! The fries were also barely warm. I stuck my fork into my beans and the "bean crock" did not feel even a little bit warm. I stirred the beans and pulled out a fork-full. Something told me NOT to put them in my mouth. I've had food poisoning before and it is NO FUN AT ALL! AND IT'S DANGEROUS! I worked as a cook in several restaurants when I was younger and I was a manager in a store that served "ready to eat" food, so I had to be National Food Safety Manager Certified. It's a certification that says I know safe and UNSAFE food handling practices when I see them. I stuck finger in the beans, room temperature. Not even KINDA warm! I called the cook over and the manager also walked over. I told them about the beans and pointed-out that it is very unsafe to hold food at room temperature. The manager checked the warming bin where Steak and Shake holds it's baked beans. ALL of the beans were at room temperature! I asked the manager how often he checks his temperatures. He said "I check them twice per shift, once when I start my shift and when I end my shift". The manager asked the cook "Where is the circuit breaker for this" and the two of them went to look for the breaker. From "FOODSAFETY.GOV" - "Did you know that illness-causing bacteria can grow in perishable foods within two hours unless you refrigerate them? (And if the temperature is 90 F or higher during the summer, cut that time down to one hour!)" The manager said the beans had been in the warming bin since 3pm- it was now 9:30pm. A waitress took my beans away and I finished eating my burger. I went to the men's room to wash my hands and as I was walking back I overheard the manager and the cook talking. I believe it was the cook who said "Well, what does he want us to do? It's not our fault the warmer stopped working?!!!" Well, as food service professionals, it IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO AT THE VERY LEAST MAKE SURE THE FOOD YOU SERVE TO THE PUBLIC IS SAFE TO CONSUME!!! I went to the register to pay my bill and the waitress (who knew about the whole situation) rang me up and was going to CHARGE ME FOR THE UNSAFE FOOD (the beans) WHICH I HAD SENT BACK TO THE KITCHEN!!! After I pointed this out the manager walked over and said "I'm sorry about the beans, I'll take $2 off your bill" Fine, $2 off my bill. #1) They made my burger wrong (the cheese). #2) They made my fries wrong (the cheese glop). #3) When I did get my fries they were not hot and they were SUPER -SATURATED with grease! #4) Steak and Shake served me potentially unsafe food to eat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! #5) The waitress would have charged me for the unsafe food I did not eat if I had not noticed the mistake on my check. #6) My waiter said in a snarky, sarcastic tone "THANKS, I appreciate it!!!" , apparently in reference to the tip I did not leave for the rotten service and UNSAFE FOOD I was served! We have been there and ordered take out a couple times. When you order take out it's usually very fast, but the burgers are very messy when you get back and try to eat them. I almost feel as though the cook thinks it's ok to be messy because we won't be there when we open it. Sometimes the shakes aren't blended well either. When you get the food to eat there, it's usually better prepared. It's always good. I love Steak 'n Shake burgers and fries, but I just don't want to have to scrub my hands after. read more

Went to Steak and Shake after IHop truly ruined my night. The server "Kay" was on point. Food was hot, fresh, and quite good. My portion was perfect. I used to get a Steakburger w/ Cheese on the way to work the overnight shift at least 3 times a week. While I don't miss the overnight job - I do miss the Burgers! The drive thru order taker is always in a hurry, I can't get a word in before being asked " is that all" " is that all" Why have I come to this restaurant past midnight to find the drive thru is closed until 2am. Then I went inside to over hear the manager telling the person who called in a grub hub order that it would be over an hour because they were having their "hoods cleaned" as they clearly were not being cleaned nor was a facility management company on property. As a restaurant owner I know that you cannot operate during a hood cleaning. During that time a staff of over 7 employees are staring like deer caught in a head light because someone actually came in when the drive through was closed. WHY WAS THE DRIVE THRU CLOSED. I think some users have got the wrong location for being closed! Grape Rd. Location did have a fire how long back and are restoring the place. The I'm sitting in DT at the 933 location and speaking to the window gal. Grape Rd is expected to reopen March or April. Remember while they are a 24 hr store if electric or weather is bad they may close to keep employees home, safe & warm. Not trying to make excuses for those saying they've been here people in yet closed. Maybe their holiday store party or perhaps to was wrong location where you reviewed wrong store. My cheeseburger was delicious (and very messy)! My shake was pretty good, too. French fries were fine, though the very thin form factor didn't seem to lend itself to staying hot for very long. The waitress forgot to add cajun seasoning to my fries, but brought a side of cajun fries at no extra charge. The shakes and salads came quickly. The rest of the food seemed to take forever, though we were only the second group in the place when we placed our order (cost a star), after which a number of other groups came in. read more
