As far as taste and quality this is what fast food should be. I'm not a huge burger person but when I do occasionally crave a burger steak'n shake is my go to place. Their food is rich, flavorful, their fries are always crispy, and their burgers are alway juicy and the meat is cooked perfectly. The burgers can be tad bit oily but that's part of what makes their burgers so good. I also love their desert options they have. Of all the times I've eaten at steak'n shake I can honestly say I've never had a bad meal. Pretty much everything on their menu is good. came in roughly 2am, it's been a long day for me and the girlfriend. we wanted some decent food, knew steak n shake had a reputation for waiting a long time for just a bit of food, but it's all that was open in the area ( less than 1mile, thats all I felt like driving.). I roll up to the order speaker thing, I just hear "one minute." I said ok. after a while of not hearing anything, I just said "hello?" and we hear "yeah." I ordered, didn't realize I was ordering the combo instead of just the food. oops, long day, sorry, I said. HORRIBLE customer service!!! The staff at this location is slow, RUDE and they have NO customer service skills. After sitting for over 20 minutes after joining friends that had already dined we decided we did not want anything at this establishment that badly since no one seemed remotely interested in serving us. As we waited for our friends to pay their bill the staff behind the register talked loudly about us while rolling their eyes and acting like we had inconvenienced THEM so much while there was a total of 12 other customers in the place. Tonight, the Steak 'n Shake in Mishawaka was closed because of computer issues and I was practically starving, so I drove to this location. The man at the window was very polite and asked me to pull forward. I waiting maybe 10 minutes for my food. As I'm pulling away I notice my drink doesn't have the flavored syrups I asked for, not too big of a deal. I proceed to drive 20 minutes home. I finally get to eat and I open the burger, and it's burnt..it's so dry and burnt that I just had to throw it away. The place was a mess. I seen that they were busy before we got there. Our waitress was very nice but the problem I had was, the shift leader( and a leader is not what I would call her) she was loud and yelling at the cook and then yelled "I swear I am going to walk out". I wish she would of. I did not see her name tag but she walked with a limp. The place was in serious need of clean up but she put her coat on and went out for a smoke,while a group of seven came in and told another waitress to just seat them at 53 and went out. I have worked in food service and I know it can be stressful and hard but the guests should never see it. While there and things were calming down I didn't see anyone start a clean up. Another thing while waiting for check, another waitress with blonde curly hair walked by and said really snotty "are you waiting on something and I replied just as snotty " yes Jesus". After a busy Sunday afternoon of shopping, we stopped in for a late lunch. The place was clean, not too busy. We had shakes and cheeseburgers with fries. The service was just fine. The menu lists a variety of burgers, dogs, and a few other meals. A nice variety of toppings are available, and it seems you can order single, double or triple burgers. The milkshake: nice, thick and tasty. The burger: I had a single with cheddar, ketchup, mustard, lettuce and tomato. Kinda small, a little greasy, the lettuce and tomato almost lost in there, the bun was soft and fresh. It was OK, not great. I really would have rather had it served open, with a decent amount of lettuce and more than a sliver of tomato. The fries: shoestring, reasonably crispy, tasty. A child's portion. Served on a small plate. The food was served quite rapidly, but somehow really wasn't very hot. I'm not sure how that happened -- maybe they should keep the plates on a warmer? The cost was about 8 bucks per meal, plus tip. I know this is essentially a fast-food chain, but a few things could be done to improve the experience: 1. Keep the plates hot. 2. Serve the burgers open, so customers can see the toppings. 3. A little more lettuce and a thicker slice of tomato would really help. 4. Increase the portion size of the fries by about 20%, so the plate doesn't look so barren. We will try this place again. Next time, I'll order extra lettuce, extra tomato, and extra fries. We'll see what happens! Update: So, on a return visit I ordered the "classic double" with extra lettuce and extra tomatoes. BINGO! And the plate even had more fries this time. Nicely done. We sat there for an hour and only our shakes came. After 20 minutes we got our burgers one of them was basically the equivalent to the stuff you scrape off the grill. They also forgot the cheese on one burger. the milkshakes and burgers tasted absolutely horrible. The milkshakes were basically scoops of ice cream in a cup you couldn't even suck it through the straw. A dog cooked it and then crapped on it and it still would've been better and come out faster then what we got. Someone was having their birthday next to us feel bad for them. As I walked in to this steak in shake. I realized I had made a mistake. The tables, and floors look they have never been cleaned sense this "restaurant" has been open. I've had mixed experiences with this location. Usually they are on top of things during most people's waking hours, but sometimes during their late night happy hours service is very slow, even when there aren't many patrons. Sometimes servers are forgetful but I try to understand that they live off of their tips, so I never stiff them, but I would be more generous if the service was faster. I ate there yesterday and my double cheeseburger was cold, the bun was toasted very very had, the fries and cherry coke were fine. So my last visit was awful. Not only did they not listen to my order (I didn't correct them because I was debating getting the number they said, thinking paying more for the number 10 over the number 16 meant I got more than 3 strips of chicken) I asked for no ice in my drink and they gave me ice (happens every time I ask for no ice) when my order came out I drove away before realizing that though I had asked for ranch, they gave me bbq, and though I paid more, I only got 2 slices of chicken. This is the first time I've actually taken the time to write a negative comment about a restaurant. I came in here to get a simple meal. This staff does not work together at all. There are nine people here in nobody is working together to get people in and out. The restaurant is only a third seated. The waiting area is packed and not a single employee here is taking the time to even talk to these people. It's like they don't care at all!. I've seen many people just turn around and leave. There are nine employees in here and nobody except for this young short girl is even attempting to help the waiter. Really, really disappointed. 20 minutes to be seated and when we were seated we were left for a while. Tables around us completely dirty, took them the whole time we were there to finally pick up dirty dishes, so 45minutes? And they were there while we were checking in and most likely before then. There were enough workers there and most of them were just twiddling their fingers while two people did the work. Saw a young guy on his cellphone. Sad. When the dishes from the other tables were finally being picked up, the woman picking them up was carrying a baby! And then seating people with a baby. Going between the seats of the booths and washing the tables with a baby...it sounds ridiculous because it is. My order was also wrong. So I got a little piece of chicken for 5 bucks. Server was nice, but no one else seemed to be helping out or doing their job. It's a shame. The manager shouldn't even be called a manager. Was yawning when seated 2 people.
