I am always returning back to newly opened places to see if the Burgers did retain their appearance, taste and price as recently reviewed by the Des Moines Register. I don't know where or what day she got her burger, but my Double Steak Burger was a thumbs down due to taste-no seasoning, presentation-- sloppy- and price gone up a few quarters. The burger I had here when they first opened was truly good, but now as they venture to open another franchise in Waukee off Alice Road-- I hope the staff ups their game to truly reflect the brand. Another downer was that the lobby was closed for renovations -- ladders, rags, buckets and tools were everywhere in that small space while the cooks continued to serve drive up only with workers in the prep space. Chicken tenders are on the small side but they are a favorite too. Oreo milkshake is ordered every time we go. Price is reasonable. Been there a handful of times now and it ranges $20.xx- $28.xx for the family. The long line to order is probably the worse. My advice: Sunday's at 4-5pm is like a 20-25 min wait to order. We also went on a Saturday afternoon 3:30 pm and it was a 50 min wait to order. We've timed it that if you are at the end of the line where the drive way in is, it's about 30-40 minute wait. All drive thru for now during the pandemic. All employees are masked. This location also does not accept the reward system. "Their computers are not properly networked to the headquarters." The employees don't like to be interrupted when they are just standing there checking their cell phones and twirling their hair. We have made Steak n Shake a part of our lunch or dinner plans several times now. The pandemic has made things challenging for this and other businesses, but our experiences have been good. This location remains drive-thru only, and my wait time for this particular visit was only four or five minutes with as many cars in queue. This is pretty consistent with all of my fast food stops for the past few months across the Des Moines metro. My order was accurate and the food was fresh, hot, and fast. Well I have been waiting for the west des moines place to open because I usually hit the one near iowa city..I like the burgers for flavor but not size..lb wise..french fries are shoestring type..which are good but due to their size they don't travel well before they get cold..and currently the dine in isn't an option..but my favorite is the shakes..I will stop by the Iowa City one just for a shake for the drive back to dsm..The only strikes on the wdm location is staff shortage and reduced hours due to that..and be prepared to wait 30 minutes or more for food while you snake through the wrap around drive thru line. We wanted Steak n Shake to come to Des Moines. The locations in Coralville and Moline are still stops for us on drives east. But the concept tried here fails. The sum of the parts is not the whole. We stopped in during the pandemic for takeout and gave things a pass given that and the relatively short time they had been open. But nothing has improved and it's time to comment on it. The burgers are not made to order. Each patty in two triple Steakburgers was Luke warm at best; no greasy juice that's part of the experience devouring these mega sliders. The cheese wasn't melted. A large order of cheese fries should come with more than one meagerly filled condiments container of cold liquid faux cheese. This is quick serve taken to an extreme. The line was quite the wait, but I was excited to try it so we didn't mind. We both got double cheese steak burgers and they were delicious. A bit greasy but still very good. We also got a steak frank w/ chili n cheese and it was pretty good. Taste like a chili dog from home. We got a Kit Kat shake and a Nutella shake. The Nutella was AMAZING! Definitely want it again. I walked out of the Steak 'n' Shake on Tuesday afternoon (Sept. 6) without my $11.30 worth of food after witnessing unprofessional behavior in the kitchen. Two immature adolescents -- the kitchen help -- were horsing around, playing grab and tickle, and seemingly unaware of how to prepare a simple burger or where the condiments and other ingredients were located. The manager looked on, having to point out to one of the kitchen employees that my kiosk-placed order stated I wanted neither the cheese slice nor grilled onions on either of the two single-patty burgers I'd requested. I'd ordered relish (not available, I was told, even though the kiosk display has it listed), onions and pickles on each one. Then the burger maker asked where the raw onions were. This was not some ridiculous time in the morning. It was 3-something in the afternoon. Surely, the burger maker would have made a few hamburger meals before mine! I was, I will point out, the only customer ordering at the time. I gradually became worried that the food might be stale, contaminated, or whatever. I lost my confidence to want to eat it and decided not to risk consuming whatever these folks were struggling to make. Cooking hamburgers and "dressing" the patties is NOT rocket science. Gee whiz! I am never going to this out-of-the-way West Des Moines restaurant again. Told no because it's a corporate thing. must be new rule because we've gotten them before and have a receipt showing we bought drinks. Employee allowed to yell and swear at us and then be mad because my reaction wasn't meek and to walk away. Their food is good, but the customer service is horrendous. Asked for a refund after such terrible service, and was told 3-5 days. If I thought for one second the manager would actually process it, I would have taken it but the manager was just as terrible as her employee. I was driving by and thought I should give this place a try. Worst mistake of my life. I had to place my order twice before she could actually get it entered into the computer. I got to the window, and was not welcomed at all. I gave the employee my payment. The employee looked to be African American maybe in her 40's. She had a very horrible expression on and gave me my card and receipt back and I said thank you and she just said "Uhuh" and closed the window. At that point I closed window waiting patiently. She didn't seem happy to serve us. I was talking to my mom and realized she had my food ready so I opened my window and she just gave me my bag with a very unhappy and unwelcoming face.
