steele and loeber TLDR: In my decades of home ownership, I have contracted with siding professionals, window installers, cement contractors, roofers, electricians, handymen, landscapers, floor installers, HVAC professionals and plumbers. Without a doubt, Steele and Loeber (SL) was the worst contractor with whom I have done business. The salesman, Murray, was a pleasant fellow but after the contract was signed, things went slowly downhill. I had a pole in my old garage which held wires going to the main ComEd service line. When initially shopping for a garage contractor, one potential contractor advised me that this situation would need to be handled before any garage work could be done. He advised that any electrician should be able to rectify it. Upon completing my comparison of garage contractors, I opted for Steele and Loeber given that they offered a competitive price and claimed to be in the garage business for 40 years. I told them I would work on handling the electrical pole issue on my own with an electrical contractor given that the other contractor indicated this would be a simple matter. After conferring with upwards of five electrical contractors, giving me responses of "that will be $10k+ to do', 'call ComEd, they'll do it for you for free' and 'I don't know how to do that since the wires can't be shut off', I decided to ask Steele and Loeber to assist in handling the issue. They've been in this business for 40 years, right? This shouldn't be that hard for them to handle....right? So, in the meantime, SL tears down my garage. Good, we're finally seeing progress even though it's now months past the originally planned construction date. Fast forward to Phil, the owner of SL, arguing with ComEd about how to do the work, Phil or his representative never coming out to look at the problem, Phil saying he had just done the same work last weekend and yet three months later, he still had not found an electrician to do the work. SL has been doing garage for 40 years? And yet this is the first time they've encountered an electrical pole in a garage? SL doesn't have a list of electrical contractors on hand whom they could send to handle this minor construction issue? And when I call Phil to complain about the delay, he YELLS, yes YELLS at me that he is "doing me a favor". I'll give him that I said I would handle it initially but I called five electrical contractors AND ComEd, none of whom could fix it, as mentioned earlier. Back to my point, in 40 years, has SL never encountered this problem? Why is such a simple thing so difficult for a company who has been in business for 40 years, not to mention that Phil said he just encountered this same issue with his son's garage? Why is it now some "huge favor" when I'm not asking that it be done for free, I'm simply asking "have your electrical guy do the work and I'll pay the extra price for the work". In addition to all this headache, additional failures of SL were: The concrete contractors covered the gas line pipe connector and said they would cut a hole for access when they were done laying the concrete. They did not do so. The wires which previously fed the garage were just left laying, STILL CONNECTED, on the ground. (I have dogs and kids - why endanger my family and pets?) Upon completion, I realized that i had not contracted for rain gutters. Fine, not entirely a complaint against SL but wouldn't you, as a garage builder, want to offer a complete product? Why not offer rain gutter installation as an add-on? My guess is that Phil has such bad relationships with contractors that several have opted to no longer do business with him. If you look at his response to Google reviews, he literally advocates in his responses that contractors not do business with customers who give him a negative review! Talk about petty! Long story short, I would not recommend Steele and Loeber to my worst enemy. read more

Steal and Loeber is a horrible company. Don't use this company! They contract everything out. Don't let Corona construction who's is one of there contractors pour your concrete you will regret it. I have water issues. Water coming in from every corner of my garage. Concrete flaking. Carpenters are drunks who think it's ok to drink in your property while installing your garage. Owner of steal and Loeber also thinks it's ok. Be carful if you're planning on using steal and Loeber. I highly wouldn't recommend!!!!! Avoid yourself the headache. read more

Do not use these guys my garage floor is only three month old and is cracked they told me not their problem because in the state of Illinois concrete is not covered under warranty. That's wrong BTW . I am now going to hire a lawyer to get this fixed I questioned the concrete contractor on why they are not preparing the ground to receive the pour and was told it was not needed . Obviously they don't know what they are talking about. It's sad that I'm stuck on my own with a new garage and a cracked floor. Good thing I took photos and videos of every step of the way . I will never recommend these hacks to anyone ever AAMOF I already showed potential customers the crack in my floor and they agree that it's better to use someone else. read more

We lost our detached garage in an emotionally charged fire in March of this year. We needed to rebuild as quickly as possible. We searched for garage builders and very few wanted to even show up. Some would only give estimated proposals by email. When a neighbor told us about Steele and Loeber we made a call. Brian showed up the next day personally and walked through the entire build with us. We trusted him so much we signed the contract on the spot. The pricing was reasonable, but the service was great! Brian kept us informed every step of the way. The people doing the concrete, the building and the electrical were quality and willing to communicate. The outcome was superb, and we were thrilled with the garage. read more

Not only was the construction a nightmare that dragged on months and took multiple trips back to redo so many things that were done incorrectly to begin with, thirteen months later, with cold weather coming on, the garage door wouldn't open. I called their office and was told someone would call me later the following week to set up an appointment to fix the problem, and that it was no longer under warranty. A $25,000 garage should function more than a year. Not wanting to wait for the call to set the appointment a week later, I contacted a garage door company I spotted in the neighborhood and they came out at 7:00am on the following day - a Saturday - and fixed it in 10 minutes. This is just one more example of the lack of customer service that I experienced constantly during the construction last year. read more

Update on my garage. Because Steele and Loeber was so rude to me my patience paid off. I found another company that not only charged me less, I got a bigger garage, upgraded electrical to add a 240v heater, a patio door and a additional window. I was more than happy to give this contractor a $1000 tip. I was driving in my neighborhood and seen a crew building a garage. I stopped and asked for their information. The contractor met me that evening. I explained to him my horrible experience with Steele and Loeber. He assured me that we could work together. I'm 100% satisfied with the build. In addition I was able to support a business that looked like me and had respect for me as a consumer. Again, the lesson is that you don't have to give businesses your hard earned money and accept their behavior. I read the review from Steele and Loeber owner and not one mention did he admit or acknowledge how rude he was on the phone. For the owner at Steele and Loeber you can be racist and have black family members. Thomas Jefferson owned slaves and literally locked his mistress slave in a basement who bore his children. You showed your true colors and do not get a pass from me. And if people have enough patience they will witness what I did which was your true colors. My experience with Steele and Loeber was a eye opener. Again, I encourage consumers to stop accepting rude, racist, unprofessional behavior under the guise of how long they been in business. I have meany items that was ignored by builder on plan and speck sheet, Framing standers grossly ignored . Details required by village, even town inspector ignored his own requirements, The builder and village hall are 6 blocks from each other. We had an electrical fire that destroyed our garage. We got 4 quotes and decided to go with Steele and Loeber. We are very happy with our new garage. The sales and service team are all very helpful and responsive. The quality is top notch. It did take around 4 months to complete the job but a lot of garages came down from the huge snow storm this past winter so we knew they'd be pretty busy. FANTASTIC customer service and pricing! I shopped around a quite a bit before stumbling on to Steele & Loeber. Phil, Murray and his team did an excellent job breaking down costs, financing options available to me (not that I needed it), and how long it would take to demolish my rotting 2 car garage and build a new one. It was refreshing to work with professionals, as they were completely transparent with every little detail which the other companies I talked to couldn't give me a straight answer on when it came to costs, turnaround, and someone actually showing up at my house to meet with me at my convenience, not theirs. The proof was in the paper when it came to sign a contract to demolish and build. It shocked me as he saved me a good chunk of change if I went with someone else to do the demolishing part. I appreciated that if there were any issues even years after it being built that I can call him to fix it. My elderly mother in Chicago, Il. hired them to fix her garage door initially. She added the service of having the entire siding also done. They subcontracted the job with someone else who took off her door canopy and threw it away. Steel & Loeber refused to replace it, yet charged a 10k for the service. They could not complete the small detail that would have made the customer 100% satisfied AND kept her dry on rainy days. I am happy with the garage but I wrote about the lack of communication from both Steele and Loeber and the electrician that came out to install electricity to garage. Today I received a phone call from both , Phil the owner of Steele and Loeber, but also the owner of the electrical company as well. STEELE AND LOEBER is NOT TO BE TRUSTED! DO NOT EVER CONTRACT them to build your garage! 6 months after the build we still have garage siding coming down and NO ONE will return our call. We are SO UPSET that we ever reached out to them. Maury sold us this great package of only the finest laborers using top quality materials and responsive customer service. We were sold a lie. Maury assured us that Steele and Loeber uses its own construction staff. Not true, they use contracted laborers who we often had to call to see when they would be showing up next. On perfectly clear days and without notification, Juan and his crew missed a few outings to complete work. Right away we had concerns with the quality of work. When we informed Juan that he did not measure and make correct cuts and that we noticed boards full of holes used on the roof, his crew did nothing. We called Phil from Steele and Loeber to get involved and he had the builders repair their shoddy work. When the garage was "completed," Steele and Loeber was quick to make sure that you signed their check but did not care about the level of customer satisfaction. We brought to Phil's attention that the garage siding was still falling down. A Steele and Loeber technician was assigned to our case. When we talked with the technician, he informed us that Juan was supposed to be supervised due to his previous history of sub-par work. The technicians were scheduled to come out on a Saturday to fix the sub-par siding, 10 pieces were to be replaced. Two days before the scheduled appointment, we came home to find two technicians working in our backyard. They had jumped our 6-foot fence and trespassed upon our property (cracking one of our fence boards in the process). This was it! We called Steele and Loeber twice to request a manager call us to discuss their employees. No phone calls, no apologies, NOTHING! And to top it off, that siding is still coming down from the garage! This experience has been incredibly stressful for my family and we are in the process of filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Save yourself the headache. I called Steele & Loeber on September 22, 2020. They told me that someone would call me back within 48 hours. That didn't happen. I called them back on September 29. They assured me again that someone would call me back. No return call yet. I called their office in Bellwood on September 30. Today is October 2 no call from either office. Salesman named Scott is purposely vague when saying that the customer will have to pay for the cost of the permits, which is extra on top of the agreed upon contract price for the build. He completely fails to mention that the company will also be charging you an "expedite" fee of $450 on top of the cost of the permits. The "expedite" fee is just the company adding hundreds of $ to the permit bill when they send it and saying that since you agreed to pay for the permit fees then you also have to pay any extra fees they want to add to the bill. How's Was also billed for a $100 "bond" that is required by the city when applying for the permit but is returned to the builder upon completion of the build. I would not have known that money is returned to the permit applicant had I not gone and talked to the building department myself. Just another example of the company trying to bill for even more money preying on the customer. They then refuse to schedule the garage build and hold the contract over your head until you give in and pay the extra $ or tell you that you'll have to sue them if you refuse. Was quoted 6-8 weeks (which is already a very long time frame) and the work wasn't completed for over 9 weeks. Had to pay an extra month of storage costs because of the time delays. Be prepared for hundreds of $ in extra costs that you are not ready for and very slow work. Shady business practices all around. I will never use them again, and would never recommend them to anyone. read more

If I could leave 0 stars, I would. I had an entire garage built, and it looked great, but a few months later, I realized many defects to the garage. The side door started to swell up and had trouble opening and closing. They told me they would replace the side door and told me they would order a new one, but they took a whole month to come out. The door was STILL not right, so I had to call a different company to come out and fix it. The overhead garage door also came off the rails and would've hit my car if it were in it. I will be posting pictures on Yelp! I will NEVER do business with them again. Horrible customer service, and they did not have any consideration for any of the issues that I had! What they don't tell you about their warranty is that the roofing shingles are only guaranteed to withstand only 50 miles per hour winds. I had a garage built by this company and after the first year, which is how long the building warranty is, the inside wall started leaking and of course they said there is nothing they can do about it since the warranty has expired after one year, fast forward some years later and now after the recent high winds my garage is the only one that has shingles blowing off! read more

I phoned and they were able to help and I am so appreciative by Phil offering to get is replaced. The color was a special one but they did not hesitate to locate the color and get it reinstalled.
