My family and I spent a week at the Steele Hill Resort in NH, and I think we will stay there again. There are pluses and minuses in every review, so please view this as it is intended, to be a positive review of a place that I would feel privileged to visit again.
When I walked into the room I was very impressed. It was blisteringly hot out that day, but the room was already as cool as a cucumber. We had a 2 bedroom suite, and the common area was very large. It had a big sectional couch, a flat panel TV, and was flanked by the 2 doors to the bedrooms, a bathroom and the kitchen/dining room area. There was also a nice balcony in the rear overlooking Lake Winnesquam.
The bedrooms were set up nicely. The smaller of the two had 2 twin beds and its own bathroom with a full bathtub and shower. The larger had a King sized bed, a spa style bathtub, and its own bathroom with a stand up shower. It had its own balcony with a similar view described earlier. It also had a flat panel TV. Everything was really sparkling clean on our arrival. There was also plenty of storage space for all of the clothing that we would need for the week, and the kitchen had plenty of cabinet space for the food we brought with us.
There was a pair of gas grills right downstairs from us in the back yard, allowing us to grill various meats and vegetables for meals. This was great because cooking in the room could get stinky at times. In the area where the grills are there were a few picnic tables so we could dine outside if we wanted. There was also a dog named Fred who visited the grills every afternoon around dinner time, for a few scraps he would let you scratch him behind the ears, call him buddy, and he would generally act as a surrogate for those of us who sadly had to leave their dogs behind for the vacation.
You can read other reviews of this place and see all about the pools, the golf course, the restaurants or the playground so I won't go into their physical detail here for you. They are great additions to the resort which give you something to do if you decide that you want to spend time on property. As far as a review of these goes, here is some good and some bad.
The pools were great but they were cold. I am of the opinion that at least the indoor pools and the pool areas should be heated, apparently the Steele Hill staff doesn't agree. Also the kiddies' pool and slide was constantly breaking down, and there was not a time that we visited that area that it wasn't out of service for most of the stay. However, the hot tubs were nice, and having a bar at two of the 3 main pool areas was a definite plus that I applaud.
The golf course was fun. No need to lug all of your clubs, you should be good with the 4 iron, a pitching wedge and a putter. The course itself was free, and I am guessing that you could just jump on and off for a few holes, though I played all nine. The mowing wasn't the best, but it was really better than I guess I expected for a free course. A minor gripe that I have is that they have really tiny signs directing you from green to tee. I mean, really, would it kill them to put up larger signs. The course is hilly enough that you don't need to do the extra walking that can come from heading to the wrong tee box because you missed an arrow that is literally 1.5" x 6".
The restaurant was pricey and slow. Really this is a review for all the restaurants in the area. It was rare to find one that wasn't overpriced, and where the service was good. Oh well, I guess it isn't really that big a deal, just a little disappointing.
There were 2 playgrounds, and my kid played in both but really the pools got most of her attention.
As for the rest of my observations, there were a few things that if I wanted to really be nit-picky I could. First is the smoking. The suites and all indoor areas are non smoking. Maybe I just got unlucky, but it seemed like the thing to do in my little area was sit right outside my window and chain-smoke. There were a lot of smokers there the week I was there, and the air conditioners sucked all that second hand smoke into my room. Don't know what the resort can do about that other than instituting a policy of requiring smoking to take place 30 feet from buildings, but let's face it who would really listen. If you are like me and don't like to have smoking going on around you then this may drive you crazy.
Second is the wifi. They say they provide it, but in my area it was spotty at best. Also, I couldn't get to yahoo.com over their network. Not sure if they blocked anything else, but that was one I noticed. Wifi was kind of important to me because my phone could have used it in lieu of the 3g network, which for AT&T was nonexistent in that area.
I am running out of space, so I will close by saying they can definitely improve, but even as-is I would stay again. read more
