Whoever designed this, I'd like to come redo my apartment. From the entrance, to the rooms, to the spa area everything was gorgeous and you can tell a lot of care and detail went into designing it. Second, the staff members are all amazing. Valet especially but also in the restaurant, at the front desk as well as the spa...a super great team. We had a balcony room and that was gorgeous...I loved all the arts and craft design themes in the woodwork, the view was gorgeous and the room was comfortable overall. The fireplace was beautiful but in July, not much need for it. Would definitely be cozy in the winter. The pool area is very nice and it's a great idea to have two hot tubs. We loved going down at night to enjoy a soak. There's also a firepit by the hot tubs. The beach area is nice and there is equipment you can use (paddleboards, kayaks). Meals were good as well. We enjoyed just about everything we had. The only meal that was just okay was steak frites one night. The steak was very bland, the portion was tiny and it was more expensive than what I pay in Manhattan but I would say the desserts more than made up for it. We had a strawberry rhubarb mousse and a Dubai chocolate cheesecake and both were phenomenal. This is a newish place, I think just under a year old so there may be some opportunity for continued enhancement. They seemed a bit understaffed, especially in the restaurant and that led to some longer wait times and the wait staff having to wear multiple hats to serve, take orders, bus and refill water. I liked the shower but it would be great to have an option other than just the rainfall showerhead. A handheld shower head or an angled showerhead coming out of the wall would be helpful. Definitely there is a need for an outdoor shower or at least a spigot by the pool so people can rinse off the sand from the beach. Everyone who came from the beach just rinsed off feet, toys, etc. in the pool which made it look a bit dirty. A sparkling clean pool is much more inviting and the signs when you come into the pool area even say you need to be rinsed off to use the pool but there's nothing available to help with that. One of the workers said that had been a request from many guests. I'd be interested to understand how this place wants to be positioned. On the website, it seems to be pitched as a serene, relaxing location and it seems targeted towards adults, which was just what I was looking for...a calm, relaxing getaway. But when we were there, it seemed more like it was targeted as a family resort. That's fine but there was absolutely no relaxing by the pool during the day as it was taken over by kids who were having fun and being loud...but that's expected by kids at a pool. All the kids were very well-behaved and their parents were attentive. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining about kids, but it would be good to be clear what the vibe is. For example, I wouldn't go to Great Wolf Lodge and expect it to be peaceful. It's just important to know what you're getting so expectations are aligned appropriately. My goal was a peaceful, relaxing stay and though I enjoyed being here, it was neither peaceful nor relaxing (except for the 90 minutes I was at the spa). This review got longer than I anticipated. I'll wrap it up by saying this is a gorgeous place to stay, I'm just not sure who the target audience is.

But we found that they're justified to charge it! We didn't book until about a month already of time, for the Saturday of Father's Day weekend. Mani/pedi weren't available due to a wedding party having booked the salon services. So all I booked for us was a regular massage for me and a salt massage for her. Each was well over $200., plus tax and gratuities, but what they offer is amazing. We arrived 90 minutes earlier than our appointment time and were escorted into the locker room and through the premises. We'd brought bathing suits and changed in the well-appointed locker room and locked our belongings in lockers. Took advantage of the hot tub, the beautiful lounges with infused waters and an assortment of high end teas, sat in the sauna...the grounds are exquisite, the parking lot spacious. But the amenities that come with the services (massage, facial) are: robe and slippers, towels, individually wrapped brush, comb, shampoo/conditioner/shower wash/hair elastic, body lotion...not sure if I inadvertently omitted something? We'd have stayed the afternoon except we were hungry. So we showered, dressed, checked out and went to Laconia NH just up the road. It was a morning of pure luxury and our massages were superb, very professional masseuses. A splurge, yes, but at least we feel that they give you your money's worth.

I had dinner in the dining room over the weekend at the start of Bike Week and I could hear the karaoke in full progress in the Pub area. There's a lobster tank with live lobsters (pick your own) as you enter the dining room. The casual dining room was dimly lit with hanging stained glass lights and candlelight at each table. The dinner menu offers appetizers, salads, soups, burgers, sandwiches, chicken, beef, ribs, prime rib, pasta, seafood, lobster, kids menu, and desserts (cheesecake, chocolate lava cake, grapenut custard, ice cream, apple crisp ala mode). The prices are moderate to high ($12 and up), plus a full bar menu from the Peter's Pub. The regular menu can be seen at http://www.shalimar-resort.com I started out with a Diet Coke ($2), which was mostly ice in a Newbury Comics Thanksgiving 2007 pint glass. I have the same pint glass at home! I ordered the Baked Haddock Dinner Special ($14) which came with cup of soup or salad and rice, potato, or vegetable. I chose the soup which was New England Clam Chowder, which was a big disappointment with a lukewarm temperature, minimal very minced clams & tiny potato chunks in a thin milky broth. I should've got the salad. The dinner rolls with Cabot butter were hot & crusty. Since it was towards the end of the dinner service, the service took a while. The floor was really vibrating and shaking each time my waitress passed by the table. The Baked Haddock arrived 30 minutes after ordering, very hot and fresh & served with lemon, decent tasting. The rice pilaf was standard nothing special. As I was dining, the karaoke from the Pub was a bit comical with one guy singing female songs such as Torn by Natalie Imbruglia and Bette Davis Eyes by Kim Carnes. I got a small chuckle to this very average meal. For dessert, I got the Warm Apple Crisp a la mode ($5) which was a good dessert served with vanilla ice cream and topped with whipped cream & butterscotch drizzle and a refill on Diet Coke ($2) with mostly ice. Overall, the meal was just okay, the chowder was the worst I've had since having a can of Snow's, which was still a lot better. The haddock was fresh and good and the apple crisp was homemade and good too. The service was paced, not the fastest, but not bad. I would give this place an overall 2.5 STARS, and deciding which way to round was finally determined, round down. Getting charged $4 for two Diet Cokes with 70 percent ice in the glass, is definitely not acceptable, especially at an average restaurant with moderate high prices for the area. If the place was fancy and the food was exceptional, then I'd expect it. Most chains in the area, even many independent restaurants I've been to will offer free refills on soda.

It looks great and has very nice "muzac" playing in the background. From working in the industry minor things caught my attention.... We sat near the window to see the lake across the street and the underside of the awnings is gross! They had unlit candle holders at the tables made from cut liquor bottles. I think that with everything else so put together in the dinning room the looked cheezy. If they were cut well maybe they would work. The bathroom was dangerous! The floor was moist and slippery! The decor in the bathroom was "tried to fix but, didn't want to spend much" It was a conversation during dinner.... LOL! I will say again, the food was phenomenal! because we stayed at the resort over two nights we ate Lobster Alfredo, Chicken & Mushroom Penne in a red sauce, Chicken Marsala, Chicken & bacon Alfredo, and Baked stuffed Chicken. We also had some breads with oil, warm dinner rolls with butter, Minestrone soup and french Onion Soup! EVERYTHING was cooked to perfect! To be fair about the service The visit was during "off season" and although one night was Pete (the owner) who I would have "expected" ("expectations are premeditated resentments") to offer great service he was busy kicking off the new pasta buffet and over seeing things .... and we were the only customers he was "responsible" for. I think that interfered with his ability to really "wow" us. The second night was a little less "excusable" The restaurant was very slow and the waitress got involved in a in depth conversation with a guy in the bar area. Good news is she got SO involved I got a free glass of wine she forgot to punch in (oh, and not the type I asked for) ...... Seriously, The WHOLE time we were with her a table was leaving, the guy came in and than at the end of our meal another table came in ..... It was SLOW and she was not focused on her job. I would recommend the food! I just really hope they get a handle on customer satisfaction in the service area!

The drive to Plumb Island through Newburyport was the perfect introduction to our romantic, north shore getaway. Being from Phoenix, we look forward to our cold, winter adventure each year and neither of us had been anywhere north of Boston before. Before our arrival, communication with the Blue was informative and hand a personal feel. Obviously, the Blue caters to summer beach-goers, and the reserved parking area near the hotel would definitely be a huge plus for folks competing for parking spots, but in winter, there are very few people or cars on the entire island. The Blue is a quaint little hotel nestled on the beach in a neighborhood of New England beach homes. We were happily greeted at the front desk by Blue staff and the General Manager. They tendered to our every need and surprised us with a fabulous fruit and chocolate anniversary gift waiting for us in the room. The room was beautiful with a classic and modern beach feel. Sliding glass doors open up to a wooden deck with a fabulous view of the Atlantic Ocean. We could hear the crashing waves while sitting inside beside the gas fireplace to read. It was magical! Also magical was the bed! We haven't slept that well in years! The bed was so comfortable and my wife loved the pillows so much that she bought the very same ones for home the day we returned. And don't forget the two hot tubs! There is nothing quite as enjoyable as relaxing in a steaming, bubbling hot tub while it's snowing all around you. Honestly, the "hot tubs available" filter was probably what highlighted the Blue to me during my search for this trip. One hot tub is on the second floor deck, overlooking the beach and the second is hidden under the pine trees at the end of a short sidewalk across the street from the main building. Both were large enough for probably 6 people, clean and well maintained. Again, it was February so we had them all to our crazy selves the whole week. The beach is beautiful! There is direct, private access from the second floor of the Blue, via a wooden boardwalk. The beach is sandy with very few rocks. I didn't see any seaweed or anything washing up on shore, but it was February, so I didn't expect to see a whole lot of anything living coming out of the water. Every morning we enjoyed a beautiful sunrise over the ocean while we drank some local coffee delivered direct to the room. Oh yeah, breakfast! Each morning the staff dropped off and adorable wicker basket with fresh, local breakfast offerings plus that wonderful carafe of coffee. We had different breakfast each day, to include quiche, overnight oats, fresh fruit, biscuits, and bacon. Just the right amount for the two of us and we couldn't wait to see what breakfast surprise would arrive each morning. Although Plumb Island may feel remote from the business of the Boston-metro area, the location was great for dipping down to Salem without hitting any traffic, or popping up to New Hampshire for a sleighride through the forest. One morning, after a small nor'easter blew through, our SUV got stuck in the parking lot snow. No worries! The General Manager of the Blue came out to hail down a plow and personally helped push us out. Now that's service! Overall, I would wholeheartedly recommend the Blue -Inn on the Beach to anyone looking for a romantic beach getaway. If you're looking for a less Metropolitan vacation with the proximity to get to Boston in under an hour, the Blue can't be beat. We will definitely be coming back. Maybe even in the summer next time!
