A few patrons came in and out for beers to-go, a few stayed to enjoy beers on-site like us. I quite liked the quiet evening so we could fully soak in the goodness of de Garde beer, the warm atmosphere, and have time to chat with the friendly bartender on shift. We had a few beers on the patio to enjoy the cool coastal air, then moved inside for our next round. We enjoyed sitting in both areas. While all of their beer is phenomenal to us, the stand outs for me were The Purple: Gin Barrel Cuvee and The Renrocha. Unfortunately, the way we were treated made us feel anything but welcome. Our 3-year-old was playing with the toy bin they provide for kids inside, while we were mainly gathered outside. Like any toddler, he made a mess, but I was mindful of it and cleaned up after him when asked. About 15-20 minutes later, I noticed the entire toy bin had been removed. When I asked the staff member (manager?) why, her response was curt and dismissive--essentially saying she was tired of cleaning up after kids. She even said she "had kids too," but the tone felt more like scolding than understanding. I explained that we come to places like this because they advertise themselves as family-friendly. Instead of hospitality, we were made to feel like a burden, as though children weren't actually welcome. The worst part was overhearing her continue to talk about us to others while we were still there. That crossed the line from unprofessional to just plain rude. We ended up leaving and taking our business elsewhere. For parents constantly searching for places to enjoy a beer while their kids have space to play, I can confidently say Heater Allen is not it. If you don't want children there, don't advertise as kid-friendly--it's misleading and creates an experience that feels hostile for families.
