I now understand the recent mixed reviews for Bistro, our evening here was a bit of a hot mess. Our Starters and Entrees were good but just about everything else was...off. As positives we enjoyed our plates, especially the Crab and Prawn Cakes. I also liked my entree of the Thai Style Coastal Soup, spicy and full of delicious fresh seafood, with the nit that the slice of toasted sourdough afloat in the bowl served only as an annoyance (I'd much prefer fresh bread on the side). But unfortunately there were a set of concerns: The cocktails were poorly made, especially the "Spice is Nice", which simply...wasn't. Lacking of balance and flavor. The focaccia, I think it was curry cardamom flavored? Didn't work. Tables were very tightly spaced and the noise level in the small room was high. I couldn't help hearing our neighbors' conversations but somehow couldn't hear my wife from across the table, I hate echo chambers! The live music - I'll spare specifics for the sake of the entertainer. Let's just say we preferred the ambience while the performer was on break. The server almost seemed to be trying too hard - there's no need for forced banter or laughter. I chose Bistro based on its web site and menu and was looking forward to a wonderful fine dining experience. We left disappointed. read more

This seems to be a local favorite. The service is very good. The price of the food is the standard over priced norm for the area, so no surprise there. The clam chowder was grainy, as in sand I assume, and tasted fishy. This was not great. I had really great clam chowder this week at a few places and this was the worst one. I had the seafood linguine which tasted fishy. So it was not great and it was expensive, per the norm for the area. I understand the pricing matches the area but the food was not good. I normally give a place a couple tries before posting a review when I have a bad experience but we are from out of town and with a limited time schedule. The disappointment of a wasted expensive evening pushed me to post this so no one else spends the same money, wasting their time and resources. TLDR: No matter how nice you are it does not make up for low quality food with expensive pricing. read more

My husband and I went to Bistro for my birthday. I highly recommend making a reservation as we did. The space is cozy (about 15 tables or so) and on Saturday they had live music. The service and food quality was impeccable. Our server Jessica's timing was incredible with delivery of wine, bread, entrees, and dessert. The food was high quality, fresh, delicious, and original. My seafood cioppino with soba noodles had a sampling of local seafood, and my husband loved the Pinot noir Demi glacé steak and Parmesan risotto. They were so friendly I hate to say anything negative, but we left really disappointed with my meal (my husband got the special and said it was "pretty good"). I got the chicken dish, and asked specifically if it was breast or thighs because I really really hate chicken thighs. I mean, literally cannot eat them. She said it was breast but... It was thigh meat.. I didn't eat any of it, so my entire dinner was a scoop of rice with sauce on it. I got a to go bag and all the chicken went in it to bring home to our dogs. Another really small thing that still affected our evening was that a table next to us was obviously people they knew, and they got much better service, a bigger pour on their wine, and double the amount of focaccia (which was delicious and we would have loved another piece). 5 stars hands down! Food, service, and atmosphere all top notch. We've tried pretty much every restaurant in cannon beach and this is by far one of the best! All the menu items from starters to entrees were really thought out well. We ordered the clam chowder as an appetizer and my wife and I agree it was some of the best chowder we've had (and we've had a lot of chowder). For entrees we had the pork chop and the hand cut linguine. Pork chop is a must order! Literally life changing. The linguine was good and with shrimp even better. But I'd definitely order the pork chop over anything. The service was on point and there was even live music. The live music was actually really good too and wasn't too loud or overbearing. We could still have a talk and enjoy the background sounds. Our food came out quick and we were actually surprised at how it was able to come out so quickly and perfectly cooked. Nice restaurant with modern fare, some with an Asian influence. The Caesar was good but the romaine is shredded which makes it a little hard to eat. Others at the table had the beet salad which they said was fantastic, especially the citrus dressing. I had the pork chop which was well cooked and seasoned. It was brined so moist and flavorful. Desserts were a bit meh though. The peach ice cream was just ok, pretty average actually. And we tried the Crazy Swede which is like a 5 layer pie and candidly no one at the table liked it and most of us found it quite inedible. So I would pass on dessert, but otherwise the food was good. read more

I went for the live music on a Sunday and returned on Wednesday because the food was so good. This to me was the best meal of the trip. I also ate at a high end place and I would prefer bistro over that place any night. The place is TINY so make a reservation or you won't get a seat. There is very limited seat at the bar for last min walk-in but not more than 8 or 10 seats. The menu is diverse and has vegetarian options. The wine list is strong with Oregon wine with multiple varietals. There's also HH from open until 6 daily. read more

The gentleman covering for the host could not have been nicer or more accommodating. We didn't have a reservation, yet he was kind enough to find us a table (and even rearrange the seating plan since there was a minor in our group and apparently the table he had planned to provide was in the bar area). The food was well-prepared from the appetizers to the soups and salads, and certainly our entrees. However, the service completely missed the mark - - our drinks were only refilled after asking (and the waitesss spilled water all over the table and in my lap, for which she apologized then never cleaned up or provided extra napkins for me to dry the mess she made), pre-bussing was non-existent, and the waitress failed to even acknowledge that we were celebrating my daughter's 14th birthday and instead "offered" dessert by saying, "No dessert tonight?". When you spend $300 on a meal, at least somewhat attentive service would be nice. Again, the guy who accommodated our party despite no reservation and the delicious food were noteworthy. We celebrated a birthday here with a group of 4 adults and one child. Our server was very sweet and attentive. I can't remember who had what but i remember only one person at the table absolutely loved their mea. He had the yellowfin tuna in a sort poke bowl presentation. There was a house salad that was pretty tasty. I liked the pumpkin seeds and the house salad dressing was citrusy and tangy and not too sweet. I has the house made fettuccine and added clams. It was ok, The noodles were a little too thick and sauce was a little too salty and not saucy enough. The one other person at the table had the fettuccine as well. They had chicken meatballs (which they loved) on theirs, but also found the pasta to be not quite right. There was a cup of chowder somewhere over the meal as well that was well received. It was a little loud but other than that the place has a nice feel to it. We all had a specialty drink of some kind, and opted for small scoops of house made ice cream for everyone. (very nice) The bill at the end of the evening was up there for sure. Overall, it was a nice evening that fell short a bit. I would definitely try them again. read more

Excellent service. We started with the bread and it was delicious! A focaccia bread with herbs and black sesame seeds, some of the best bread we've ever eaten. Then we had an appetizer of duck confit and a salad with beets and goat cheese. The confit (and bread) was absolutely amazing, the stars of our meal! The salad was ok, it was so heavily dressed that it overpowered the greens and beets. The dressing too acidic and needed a bit of sweetness to balance and not enough goat cheese, I'd estimate only 1 TBS at most of crumbled goat cheese. For dinner I had the special which was sablefish with risotto and my companion had the caramel chicken. She rated the chicken a 7 out of 10 as the sauce seemed a bit salty, the chicken was moist and tender and came in a separate bowl. Would have liked the chicken to have a bit more char or sear to it. The rice with cashews was good. My fish was excellent but would have liked it be more bright and fresh. It was served with a mango infused risotto with mushrooms and a puréed sauce. It was very heavy and rich and risotto way over salted. I did have some pin bones in my fish. Not a dealbreaker as that happens. But the risotto being too salty should have been noticed in the kitchen. We passed on dessert as we were full. A gentlemen was playing music and the ambiance was delightful. I would like to return but will ask more questions before ordering and get the dressing on the side if I get a salad! read more

A very average restaurant with an upscale restaurant price tag. We had a reservation, but waited at the door for 15 minutes before anyone greeted us, then another 5 minutes before we were seated. The table and ambience were great. The irony is that their slogan is "food without confusion" but some of the food was actually quite confusing. The dungenness crab cakes were sitting on a pool of honey mustard sauce--completely overpowering the beauty of the natural ingredients. The focaccia was dense. The pork dish was good and well prepared. My partner got the Thai chicken--also solid. The dessert was extremely sweet (their famous cheesecake), not for me, but my partner loved it. This is a solid restaurant for a tourist area, but it's not exactly a culinary experience to write home about. read more

It had been years since we last had dinner at the Bistro. First, the good part: the service was excellent. Trin was our server and 5 stars to her. She was very attentive, pleasant, and had a sense of humor, which is a prerequisite for a good dining experience in my opinion. The interior & atmosphere is also beautiful. As for the food, our group thought it was definitely good, but not great. For the prices you pay, it should be great. Paying more than $70 for a piece of fish & over $50 for Cioppino on the Oregon coast, you expect nothing but excellence. I have had better meals for far less money. For these prices on the Oregon coast, I prefer Meridian in Pacific City (though I normally prefer to support smaller restaurants). read more

The food was overpriced and most of the dishes were not good. The chili's spice overwhelmed its taste. The crab cakes (very expensive) were tasteless. The bean and job's tears cakes were tasteless and dry. The linguini had too much lemon, and the scallops were tasteless. The steak was quite good, but at $74, a little dear. When asked if the diner wanted mushrooms, it was not clear it was $18 more and not better than any common mushrooms. The wine was very good. The service was good. Came here for dinner with friends on a Saturday evening. Made reservations in advance for 5:15. There is no designated parking lot for the restaurant, but there is a parking lot about a block away for area shoppers. We were greeted as we walked in. Very inviting ambiance with dim lights. They have live music; an acoustic guitarist played soft tunes while we dined. The restaurant is pretty small inside, but they also have outdoor patio seating available. We ordered the cioppino, pork porterhouse, and fig and beet salad for entrees. They were all delicious! The pork was cooked perfectly and very tender. The cioppino had tons of seafood and just the right spicy kick. The salad was fresh. For dessert, we ordered the maple cinnamon cheesecake, crazy swede, and their homemade coffee ice cream. All desserts are made in-house, and it shows. All were delicious and a perfect end to a wonderful meal. Our traditional dinner spot during our annual girls beach weekend is Neah Kah Nie Bistro in Manzanita where we stay, but they were closed for a fall break this visit, so we found The Bistro as an alternative. My wife and I just loved eating at Bistro!! Chef Jack is an amazing chef that serves absolutely wonderful food. Everything, everything is fresh and well made. The chef special will change based on chef's choice, and what is available at market. You can't go wrong with anything you pick! Service is excellent, everyone is very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu, and about the flavors of the menu. The ambience is easygoing and they have live music, which was very easygoing and great to listen to. It's loud enough to hear, but quiet enough to have a clear, comprehensive conversation at your table. They also carry several whiskeys and Scotches, include Whistle Pig whiskey! I highly recommend going! My wife loved her linguine so much that she took a picture of it, had it made into a photo, and framed it. read more

An unassuming restaurant in the main drag, we noticed a sign advertising a one hour live music and happy hour so during a soggy day we decide to check it out. Simple layout and decor that reminded me of a senior resort town type restaurant. We sat at the bar and order drinks and 2 appetizers. The bread was delicious!!!! Cocktails were neither good nor bad. Caesar salad was strange with a weird Parmesan butter patty type thing on top that just tasted like bland firm mayo. We were not fans. The rest of the salad was fine. Ordered the Korean ribs. They were okay but a bit over seasoned. Music was nice especially in a small town like cannon beach. Staff was polite and service was prompt. All in all it was a mediocre experience so may need to try again to really know for sure. read more

Jack the owner/chef and creator of this Bistro was just delightful, going out of his way to share with my friend and I a little bit of himself, his passion, and drive. After eating at a restaurant on Cannon Beach the night before that was clearly a tourist trap, we went to the Bistro expecting the same. Much to our surprise, this restaurant was quaint and quiet. The service was attentive and accommodating. The food was fresh and innovative and beautifully prepared. We ordered the burrata that was a mixture of savory and sweet, it was amazing! I ordered the seafood Cioppino and it was prepared in an Asian style that was light and refreshing. My husband had the steak and potatoes and he ate every bite. Came here with my sister and got seated in the bar area, even though most of the restaurant was wide open. We ordered apps and I asked for a moscato -- they originally said they didn't carry it, then came back with a mini bottle, which was fine. Turns out I forgot my ID at hotel check-in (my fault), but instead of moving us to a non-bar area, they just asked us to leave altogether. On a Wednesday, no less. It was honestly kind of funny -- ended up at Public Coast, which was great. I'd skip this place though. Disappointed since I was really looking forward to it. read more

Stopped in here on the recommendation of our hotel for an anniversary dinner. The staff was friendly and attentive, the food was imaginative and well executed with choices to please different palates. The aesthetic was warm and inviting. Of our choices of the house and fig salad, the fig was the standout. As for our entrees, the chef special of salmon with citrus glaze over 3 pepper risotto and the caramel Vietnamese chicken, the chicken was spectacular. We finished the night by sharing the chef super sweet which was raspberry glaze over pannecotta on a chocolate ganache/pecan crust. It did not disappoint. Overall a fabulous anniversary celebration. As many Portlanders know, the metric for judging food changes a bit when you're on the Oregon coast. You have to lower your expectations and anticipate the typical fare (think fried seafood baskets, renditions of shrimp/crab melts, and "the #1 clam chowder on the coast"). Now, with that all in mind, let me tell you how thrilled I was to come across this restaurant that shirked my deeply grounded view of Oregon coast cuisine: The highlights: Cannon Beach isn't a huge town, and therefore it's fairly easy to navigate, but even with simple town schematics I appreciate that Bistro is so centrally located and easy to find. It's a lovely little restaurant, with a more refined air than other coastal eateries. Servers here are wonderfully hospitable without being overbearing, and items arrive quickly to the table. Let's move on to the food: first of all, my partner and I ate two whole baskets of introduction bread. Call it hunger, maybe, but I really enjoyed that bread. The crab cakes were heartily stuffed with large chunks of meat, set upon a delightfully tangy sauce (mango? my memory wanes here). I also forgot to take a photo before eating the cakes, if that says anything about them. We also enjoyed the Vietnamese caramel chicken, pickled beet and fig salad, and this cup of clam chowder that had to have had thirty individual clams and cockles tossed in. Finally, a clam chowder that has CLAM. Can we vote this rendition as the true #1 chowder on the coast? The improveables: Perhaps I missed it on the menu, but I wish that there was an option to add protein to the salads. While I enjoyed my beet and fig salad, I thought about how nice it would have been to incorporate a salmon fillet or chicken breast. Also, my partner's Vietnamese chicken leaned sweeter, which I personally do not mind (I've been known to drown many food items in maple syrup), but I can see how others with a lower sugar tolerance may be slightly averse to the caramel flavors. Furthermore, I'm still trying to decide what fair prices are on the coast when dining out. Obviously, you can expect higher costs at places in more popular towns, but I was somewhat surprised to know that some dishes here ranged up to over $60 per plate. I'm always happy to pay more for outstanding food, but some people might not be. I would keep in mind your budget if you're looking into places to eat in Cannon Beach, including here. But that all being said, I think prices here are overall justified by the quality and uniqueness of their food compared to other nearby restaurants. Having come to Cannon Beach my entire life, it's a real treat to find a place that is new to me and provides a pleasant dining experience that I don't think is always too common on the coast. And that isn't to say that the coast is devoid of good eats; I just believe that there is a type of food experience that we've come to expect, as mentioned at the beginning of this way-too-long review. This restaurant puts a unique twist on food and knocks it out of the park. The ceasar salad had shredded lettuce with a Parmesan custard that was unusual but it worked, and the Parmesan cracker was amazing. The fresh made linguine was delicious and was great with the prawns. Dessert is not to missed either. They had a special that was beyond explanation and worth every bite. Upon entering the bar area had live music and seemed popular. The dining room was behind a wall that made it feel cosy, intimate, and provided a noise barrier so the music wasn't too loud to have a conversation. The service was excellent as well. Everyone was very friendly and looked like they enjoyed working there. We look forward to coming again and sitting out in their patio. read more
