On a Saturday afternoon on the way to visit family after arriving at Midway Airport, my ride and I decided to pay a lunchtime visit to Stefan Grill. Tucked away in an industrial park where nothing seemed to be happening on a weekend, we spotted the standalone Stefan's and a full parking lot as we drove through. The inside was pretty empty apart from one larger table that seemed to be there for a celebration. The weather was perfect, so we made our way to the patio door in the back. The patio was packed! We were guided to the only available table and, as we made our way there, we had a good look around to see what everyone else was having. Truly a feast for the eyes! Our waitress was attentive and trilingual, as we observed her helping other guests around us in a few languages besides English. We wanted to try so many things, and we ended up ordering too much food but were able to take the rest home. Everything reheated beautifully. If you want great authentic Balkan food and you want to experience an ambiance that makes you feel like you're back in Serbia, Macedonia, Bosnia, Croatia, etc., this is the place! It was enough to make me want to visit the area and my family more often, and wish I lived closer! read more

Finally tried this place! It's nestled in an industrial park surrounded by trucks, I'd imagine plenty of truckers have been introduced to Serbian fare thanks to Stefan's! Cozy on the inside, nice bar setup, cute little patio in the back. We sat inside and were dealing with flies coming in from outside, that was annoying but it happens when the doors are propped open. We ordered the meze platter and it was good except I wasn't crazy about 2 out of 3 of the dried meats. You get different cheeses, cvarci. spreadables and a roasted red pepper stuffed with more cheese and breaded and fried. I asked for bread because you kind of need it. If you're not into salt, I would skip this whole thing. I should of ordered roasted peppers on their own as those are one of my faves and I miss them! We also ordered the meat platter which comes with the usuals on top of a bed of fries, slaw, onions and kajmak. The cevapi and juicy chicken breast were the standouts, kabobs were good too. The bread was fantastic so make sure you get some! mmmmmm I could live on the bread, onions and cevapi alone! Service was good, our server was kind. read more

I have to say that when I first found this place and drove all the way out to Countryside I was a little apprehensive due to the location- it's nestled between warehouses and does not look like it belongs there. That being said the interior is very nicely set up and the atmosphere is great! I've been several times for coffee and some crepes and every time I could not resist to get the Meze platter. It is hands down the best meze I've ever had and it's very filling! Last night I went there ready to eat actual food and not just apps. We ordered the Gypsy platter and drowned in the amount of meat that came out! It was perfectly cooked and enough to feed four people! It was a great meal and perfect introduction to Serbian food for my friends. Can't wait to get back and try some more stuff off their menu. Btw, the eurocream crepes are my favorite. read more

We were at Stefan Grill last night to another packed house, and I'm delighted to say the food and service is right back up there! The last time I was there we didn't have a great experience with the food neither the service and I am overjoyed that it seems to be and isolated incident. We had a combination of šopska (Balkan salad made of diced tomatoes, onions, peppers, feta in a light vinaigrette but typically with just a bit of olive oil; it's always amazing) & kupus salata (Balkan style cabbage salad - only vinaigrette you won't find mayonnaise in this salad!) flavorful fish soup (riblja čorba), veal soup, broth-based and delicious (teleća čorba ), the stuffed ćevap (Minced meat with Mediterranean seasonings and spices put on a skewer and clearly enough for three people to devour) priced at $16 nearly made us drop our jaws for how reasonable it was! And naturally homemade bread. We where too late as the kitchen is closing for their delightful homemade stuffed crepes but next time. Our service was great - the woman who waited on us couldn't have been more helpful and accommodating. I'm really glad to see that this is still thriving and was filled with people, music and laughter. It is really off the beaten path but I highly recommend anyone who has not yet tried food from the former Yugoslavia to reach out and check it out. read more

This was probably the saddest breakfast I have ever had. The food was cold, the cottage fries stale and the waitress was all smiles and laughing and welcoming with the rest of the crowd except for us. Food was Delivered to Our table but the waitress never checked back On us until it was time To remove our dirty plates and drop off the check . We were looking for a good place to eat along I-55 and picked this restaurant based on the reviews and its Eastern European/Mediterranean menu. We've ordered trout with roasted potatoes, chicken with roasted veggies, and the Stefan burger. The chicken was rather ordinary but the veggies were grilled well and the two other meals were really good. The portion size was so huge that we took home at least half of each portion. If you pick this place for a meal, make sure you go somewhere where you can take out the leftovers or else you would regret having to leave too much good food to go to waste. Good place to consider for Serbian food with some Mediterranean selections (e.g. the sopska salad is also known by other names elsewhere in the Mediterranean). read more

Just discovered this gem after years of looking for a good place to eat around here. It's easy to miss if you're not looking for it but I'm glad we stopped. My friend and I both got burgers and they literally took up the entire plate. Mine came with fries and a pickle wedge of fresh made bread. My friend is on a Keto diet so he got the imperial which has ham and bacon mixed into the meat. Everything was perfect. It was so big I could only finish half my burger. Location is not ideal but breakfast is excellent. Very excited to come back for lunch/dinner. Interior is very nice, on the smaller side but great. The place has a lot of character and with a large european clientele. The service and beautiful staff were amazing, so the other patrons at the bar. All around great place, i had a cheeseburger and being from South Dakota, i know a good burger, it was really good. To use common parlance, "so much awesome". I've dined many times here and I've catered from them 3 times. This New Years I went to them again and their listed catering price for cevapi is 99 cents per and chicken kebabs $3. I ordered 150 cevapi and 30 kebabs for a party, that should have been around $250 plus tax I ended up paying more than $400 for it to which the staff informed me that the manager would reach out to me about the prices, well 6 days of me calling and asking to speak to the manager or owner and nothing, always busy or not there. The stuffed chicken wrapped in bacon was awesome. The cevapi was incredible. The bread and cheese just kept coming. The portions were large. Talk about a food coma. I took my family and friends to dinner. The food was good as always, no complaint on that part at all. Everything was ok until I paid the bill. The server came back to our table and asked me in front of my guests if everything was ok since I left her a tip under 15%. I left her $15 in a restaurant that had 4 seated tables at that time and added another $5, she didn't seem to happy about it. ... this was beyond embarrassment ... I am still appalled by the fact that a server would ask a patron such a question in front of his party. Tip for the management... "please educate servers prior letting them serve patrons. Your severs are the mirror of your establishment" Anyway, we will still visit this establishment but this definitely threw a shadow over a very pleasant evening. read more

To be honest, I have to thank the Willow Springs police department for rerouting traffic off of Willow Springs Road onto 75th St. It was then when I ran across Stefans. I checked out it's reviews and menu online and decided to give it a try with a friend of mine. The portions were generous and the price fair. I am not Serbian but was interested in a new experience. Stopped in for dinner and was welcomed like an old friend. I ate at the bar where Sonja the bar tender was friendly, attentive, and kind. It was obvious I was not a regular however they treated me wonderful. Walked me thru the menu where I ordered the Gurmanska. It was incredible! I can't speak to the authenticity of the dish but ordered it because others around me were also having it. While I waited for the main I received some complementary turnovers and cheese which were very tasty. If you allowed yourself to imagine just a bit you felt like you were in Serbia at a local cafe. Everyone around you was speaking Serbian, everyone knew everyone else. When they spoke to you they spoke English and made you feel at home. The reason to imagine is that outside the windows is a very industrial freight centric surroundings. Definitely a hidden gem. When in the Chicago area I go out of my way when necessary to have lunch or dinner at Stefan's.. My all time favorite is their own homemade Chevaps, that are by far the best that I've ever had anywhere.. they're a small skinless sausage link that is fantastic, and when paired with diced onions and their cheese blend called Kajmak.. OMG.. Staff are professional, polite, beautiful cozy space, awesome patio in back weather permitting.. I've stopped in countless times now, and the food is awesome. In an unlikely industrial area, we came across this this little gem purely by accident when we got off the wrong exit in Hodgkins, IN on our way to Indiana from Chicago.
