First and foremost - everyone I interacted with was SUPER KIND, and I really liked some aspects of the experience. But for a premium price, I expect premium product, and this place is rough around the edges in ways that feel easy to fix. I'm pointing them out in hopes they'll be corrected. First the positive - the food was pretty good. Not great for the price, but pretty good. Drip coffee was better than most diners/cafes in the area. The ambience was pleasant. Here's the issues. 1. The furniture needs a refresh and I don't think the place has even been open that long. The side tables by the window are losing their finish - a fragment of wood got caught under my finger nail as I was sitting down and just lightly grazed the table with my hand. I also brushed away a few additional flakes coming up. The chiffon curtains are charming until you look closer and see they're speckled with food from past diners. A moss ball decoration in the bathroom is missing half its moss. It's little stuff, obviously, but when I spot things like this at a place otherwise charging a premium partially for cute aesthetics, I always get concerned that the lack of attention to detail might also be getting reflected in the food. 2. Value for money and food quality are also an issue. $20 for one slice of sourdough cut in half, a rather overdone French omelette with sour cream on top (not mentioned on the menu and a weird choice) a bowl of fruit I wasn't interested in rather than a choice of free side, and sausages I paid extra for, is not good value to me. The bread was good! The omelette was mediocre. The sausage was very solid, had a slight funk to it that I liked and suggested to me it was made in house - but 7 dollars for two sausage patties is absolutely wild. I would suggest Milkstop rethink the combos on its menu to include more and be priced a touch more transparently. 3. Finally, service. Everyone was VERY KIND, again, want to stress that, but service was slow and rather inattentive for most of the meal. The place was only half full, but water and an initial drink order were slow, and I waited for a while for the check while the staff chatted amongst themselves in the corner of the room. Not trying to be a dick, the life of a service worker is tough, but the place was mostly empty and I noticed they already charge a 3% service gratuity on your orders, so I'd expect a little better. Basically this place has a very charming surface with some wonkiness around the edges. I will definitely come back again but guys, come on - ditch the gross chiffon curtains, for both our sakes. read more

Stopped in on a Friday for a quick working lunch - very nice environment if you ever need the opportunity to do so. (and forgot to snap a picture!). I had the red pepper and cheddar quiche -- delicious! It was light and fluffy and came out in great timing. The salad was crisp and fresh, and the dressing was light -- just enough. Every season of the year, no matter the weather, no matter whether I'm first in the door for a pre-rehearsal dinner at 4:45, or planted on a barstool catching a game I wasn't invested in until I sat down, the vibe here is always right. Maybe it's the lighting, the natural light that floods in through big windows during the day, the warm lights that make all the wood surfaces look even warmer, or maybe it's the food and the service on hand. THE. FOOD. The menu does not play it safe or do "just good enough" with a bland offering of chicken parms, burgers, or generic and fried appetizers. Nor does it grab you by the collar and shake you for not knowing what guancale is. No, this menu is like your older brother coming home and cooking for you after he's been away at grad school. He KNOWs what you like to eat, but he's gonna throw a curveball in there to make it special. Or it's like the underrated gifting tactic of giving someone a high-quality version of something they already like/own/use, but would never think of spoiling themselves on. That's how you get something like a Wagyu short rib cottage pie (might be seasonal, sorry! But be happy they switch things up so often). The service is always incredible, ready to recommend, ready to wait as you ponder all the options, ready to grab an extra plate if you're notorious for sharing (or to bring the dish out, pre-split). Great local spot, homey and cozy! This place is so cute, great for brunch and lunch, they have great selection of alcohol and brunch items. I had a hard time choosing an option on the menu to be honest. It looks like they change their items because items on the menu were different than options on Yelp. Their sweets look to die for and are definitely homemade. We ended up getting the chilaquiles which seems to be a popular option and went home with a cinnamon roll. Service was kind and attentive. We were able to grab a last minute Valentine's Day reservation and it worked out perfectly. First, staff was very friendly. Second, great cocktail menu- decided to try the creamy limoncello Collins. Highly recommend it. We started our meal with the French onion soup- honestly one of the best ever. That broth had so much flavor. Downtown LaGrange is such a quaint and lovely section of Chicagoland. The setting of Milkstop Cafe is on a corner, and it takes up two parts of a building. The menu for evening is different from what we had in our lunchtime dining, and we hope to go back to try those entrees. Good was delicious, well presented, and in large servings. My husband and I came here last year with a couple of friends and we absolutely adored it. In fact we were going to go to Yau's; but my husband decided to take me here because of the wonderful time we had last year. This time however I was a little taken back on our service. We sat at the bar, because I've always said the best service is always at the bar. We ordered drinks and browsed at the menu. My husband has a few health issues going on; and opted for the Shaved Prime Rib without a roll and didn't want fries but asked to substitute rice. We didn't think this would be such a big deal because the side of rice was less than a side order of fries. After we placed the order our bartender told us we would have to buy the side order of rice. I should have just told him to forget it and pay for our drinks and go to the MANY other restaurants in the area, but my wonderful husband said it was fine; and ok'd the order. I pushed my glass of wine to the side as to not finish it quickly and order another one; my husband finished his beer, his water and my water. The food arrived. My Pesto Chicken sandwich was beautiful, however my husband was served with two small sad bowls one with the saved prime rib and the other bowl of the sad looking bowl of rice. It was pretty underwhelming, no garnish of lettuce...no nothing. We sat there for a bit without silverware and without any water refill. My husband walked over to an empty table and took the silverware off of the table to the right of the bar. 5 minutes later was the "check up". My husband informed the bartender that we weren't given silverware and the bartender apologized and offered to buy him a drink. We finished our meal and the bartender asked my husband about the free drink. My husband opted to ask the bartender to remove the side of rice off of the tab instead. Another 5 minutes later we were told the "exchange " was approved. It's so sad. We each probably would have had 1-2 more drinks and share a dessert. The whole experience left a bad taste in my mouth. We came here once with friends and had a wonderful time; but I'm not sure I'll want to return again. read more

I saw this restaurant while on the train and wanted to give it a try. Cute drinks and lots of variety. They also have non alcoholic drinks that look fun as well. I went with a rum cocktail and their limencello. Both were tasty. Many of their drinks are $13 -$16. I went with the soup of the day, which was chicken noodle. I also had the ahi tuna salad. The tuna was super flavorful. They used quite a bit of dressing. I saw many people ordering burgers, which looked amazing. I definitely would return to try one. The service was very friendly. They kept coming to ensure water glasses were full and to check if we needed anything. Parking is street parking along the side of the restaurant or by the train tracks. Give them a try! read more

I went here for brunch with friends before driving back to St. Louis. I ordered Shakshuka since you don't see it so often. I got a spicy stew with poached eggs on top. Not Shakshuka. The whole thing that makes Shakshuka great is the eggs poaching in the stew (preferably in an oven), the spice and flavors infuse the eggs. This is just a lazy version. I am not sure what the idea behind phoning in a relatively rare dish like this is. It is going to turn off anyone who has actually had it before. It isn't like there is a real demand for it. The stew was properly spicy - not midwest spicy! The server refilled my cold brew, which was nice, but didn't ask how the food was or I would have said all this then. Having lived in Forest Park, Oak Park, and North Riverside over the last 5-10 years, my wife and I have tried a lot of great places on those areas, plus La Grange, Oak Brook, Hinsdale, and others. Milkstop Cafe is hands down my favorite restaurant. The service is always top notch - never have to wait too long to order a drink, appetizer, or meal. And most importantly, when I'm ready to leave, I don't have to feel like a hostage because I can't get the wait-person's attention to get the check. Milkstop has great cocktails and great food. Most recently, I tried the Crawfish Creole dish and it was incredible (both taste and presentation). I can't wait to go back and have that dish again. read more

Hate leaving a bad review for a local business, but it was well earned. We stopped in for dinner and were underwhelmed by the tasteless meatballs, undercooked broccoli and over sauced crab cake egg roll. A male waiter repeatedly walked past our table and clapped loudly, one clap, every time he walked past- it was very jarring and disruptive to our meal. In addition, several other waiters and kitchen staff were hanging around the end of the bar having what one could only call a social hour. A morning out with my cousins brought me to MILKSTOP CAFE in downtown LaGrange. What a great place to enjoy a breakfast, lunch or dinner! Everyone on the staff was professional, friendly and smiling. Bob was our waiter and was happy to explain menu items and accommodate any special requests. I ordered the Chicken Tortilla Salad. Fresh, beautiful and delicious. My husband and my cousins ordered sandwiches and soups. Everyone was pleased with their selections. The owner, a really down to earth nice guy named Chris , came out to talk. He told us about his newest venture on the "West Side" of his establishment...pizzas, catering, banquets....then brought out a complimentary sample of his pizza bread...I WAS HOOKED! Goodness, who doesn't like this place. The food is outstanding. The service, the atmosphere, the friendliness, background music, buzz of everyone in here. Try the perch muniere. It's a perch sandwich and the handling of the fish is amazing. It's sweet, tender, so light in taste they might have caught the fish today. I've been back to Milkstop two times since brunch for dinner and really enjoyed it! We arrived during happy hour (4:30-5:30 Tuesday-Friday) and I started with the the "One in a Melon" cocktail. It was good, but I thought it would be sweeter than it was so I switched to sauvignon blanc after ($7 glasses during happy hour I think). Here's what we had for food: Lil Q's Nachos - After seeing posts raving about the nachos, we obviously had to order them. The Lil Q is a smaller version of the appetizer on the happy hour menu. It was perfect for the two of us to share to get a taste but not be filled up by. The chips were fresh and toppings were really yummy! Pro tip - if you are getting a dinner with fries save the leftovers from the nachos to dip the fries in! So good! Prime Rib French Onion Soup - FABULOUS! My husband ordered this and I tried it. If you like French onion soup you need to get it. My husband also decided he was ordering the Prime Rib sandwich after he had this! Onglet steak - this is what I ordered. The steak was good, but the standout for me was the Gruyère croutons. I would literally order them by themselves. I made an audible MMMMM sound when I took my first bite of the crouton. It also came with pickled bourbon pecans. I am not a fan of pecans so I am not the person to provide an opinion on how they were. Shaved Prime Rib Sandwich - my husband thoroughly enjoyed the sandwich and loved the bread it was served on. I took a bite and thought it was really good! We dipped the fries in the leftover cheese sauce from the nachos and they were great! Awesome Wonderful Magic Dream Oreo Cream Puff - (I can't remember the exact name but it was something along those lines)....I wasn't sure if I like cream puffs before I tried this...now I know I do. It was every bit living up to its name! Fabulous dessert I also had a chocolate martini and my husband had an espresso. I loved the chocolate shavings on top of the martini! The flavor was great and it was a nice extra dessert. My husband said his espresso was nice and strong! We sat at the bar and bartenders Randy and Michael took great care of us. They were friendly and attentive offering suggestions along the way. It wasn't crowded when we arrived around 5, but by the time we were leaving it was getting busy.
