My mother and I had an unplanned visit to the Country Cuo Restaurant after visiting the Geek Squad at Best Buy. I chose this place based on the Yelp reviews. I am always willing to try new places and the food was very tasty. I had the biscuits and gravy which came with eggs (I had mine scrambled). And coffee. It's not just any coffee, but real coffee. I am not anti-Starbucks, but I don't want to use special sizing terminology to order a "medium coffee". I found out that they special order Ronnoco coffee- the waitress told me after I asked. All staff were very nice and hard-working. I appreciated the hustle. Everybody was working and it seemed as though they had a lot of regular customers which was not surprising. Prices were reasonable (my breakfast was one of the specials of the day) and I don't recall what my mother ordered...but she loved her breakfast too). And yes, the restaurant is attached to a bowling alley and also a barber shop (and I went for a haircut too (thumbs up!!!)! Classic old school rt 66 diner attached to a bowling alley. Seating is elbow to elbow so if you're shy you will get over it. Recently updated decor brightened it up. The food is fry cook classic. Sit at the counter. Corned beef hash, skillets, you name it. Service is stellar you dont have to wait but a minute for your coffee to be heated up. Tip these hard workers well. Attached to a bowling alley, Country Cup is like some sort of throw back. Old school small diner feel, with a cook who's likely some descendant of the original owner. You could taste it in the food. One of those kind of cooks that is capable of holding down the grill and other devices in the kitchen, and engage with the customers, or whatever regular he hasn't caught up with in a few days. I've witnessed a decline of these kind of places over the years, and that's pretty sad. Anyway, back to the food. The flow of the meal was very old school. The wife ordered her go to breakfast plate with all the basics, and all looked made with care, and was enjoyed.. I got Grecian style chicken, which included a potato (browns w/cheese please!) and a dinner salad. Bonus super extra stars had their blue cheese dressing been house made, but these type of places really don't do that kind of thing in house, especially one this small. That's cool. Ken's Steak House dressing made up for it! Chicken was executed like a Greek sage in the kitchen. They nailed the flavors and textures like the best I've ever had. Walking in the door, we felt at home and welcomed. We were seated by the owner who was a kind looking man who could probably have a sharp tongue. Our waitress who has been here for 32 years made me feel like I was sitting at her breakfast table in her kitchen. She was the sweetest lady I've met in the greater Chicago area. The food was the epitome of comfort food. We enjoyed the skillet bowl. The steak was AMAZING!!!!!!!! The restaurants as located in a bowling alley but don't let that fool you, the food, staff and comfort level was Michelin Four Star! Would definitely travel from Sacramento back here. read more

My best friend and I were looking for a place to have lunch in Countryside and, when we saw Fried Chicken on the Country Cup's menu, we were in.  The problem was finding the place.  We drove around a bowling alley's parking lot twice before we saw an unobtrusive sign painted on the building by the entrance that just said "Restaurant".   We thought, "Okay, let's give it a whirl".  The first thing we saw when we entered was a window open to the bowling lanes so that bowlers could place and pick up orders.  We figured this must be the place and walked into a small restaurant that looked like a set for a 1950's TV series.  There was one booth, several tables and a long counter with stools - several of which were occupied by what looked like regulars.  Pretty cool.   The fried chicken wing meal came with soup and a side.  My friend got a salad and I got mashed potatoes with gravy.  A big basked of rolls and crackers accompanied the meal.   And I have to tell you it was THE BEST vegetable soup either of us has ever had.  I'm not kidding.  We asked the owner if the soup was made in house and it turns out he made it.  Yikes! If this was just the soup, what were the wings going to taste like? Turns out they were fantastic.  Crispy and flavorful on the outside, moist and meaty on the inside.  And I'm guessing everything on the extensive menu is just as good.   So, if you ever find yourself near Countryside you really should stop by this hidden gem.  After the meal you can even bowl a few lines to work off the calories! read more

I didn't know what to expect walking in the door because this place is a true hole-in-the-wall but I don't judge by looks because that's where the BEST food be at! Got a Gyros Omelet for breakfast with wheat toast. I added feta cheese in my omelet which was a wise choice. The omelet wasn't "amazing" but it wasn't bad. Good amount of meat with nice flavor. Give me a home, where the....oh, wait. Give me a diner, on Route 66, and I'll be one happy camper. In a distance suburb of Chicago, the town of Countryside, is the 66 exit route from the Loop, and on it, inside a bowling alley, with little signage to let you know it's there, is the Country Cup dinner, with all of 10 tables, a counter for 8, and on this shift, about 7 employees hustling to serve the jammed packed café. Serving a full menu 24/7, I stopped in for a corned beef, changed my mind, and went with a specialty unique to Chicago (as far as I am concerned), the "olive burger", also referred to as the "Queen Burger" in other locales. I've written about other stops along Route 66 in the past. Everybody knows Chicago is a great hot dog town, but it's a great burger town, as well, with one of the most (in)famous being the Billy Goat Tavern, underneath the Wrigley Building on Michigan Avenue. The Billy Goat was perfectly poised between two rival newspaper buildings, the Trib and the Sun Times, and was where a lot of the reporters used to hang out regularly. But the Billygoat became known to the rest of America through John Belushi's SNL skit, where the punchline was "cheezbooger, cheezbooger, no coke, pepsi", which pretty much describes the 'Goat as it remains today. Back at the Country Cup, the coffee is fresh and plentiful, the burger was a sizzling food service patty, and the rings were hot and greasy. And the olives? They were just fine. If you ever find yourself in need of a nosh in this part of Chicago, check out the Country Cup anytime of day or nite. If you're a fan of surface streets, stay on the original Route 66 from downtown Chicago to the Cup.... Just about 20 miles, take Adams out of downtown, to Ogden Avenue, and roll out there 16 miles or so to Joliet Road. read more

Truly a mom and pop kind of place, and as greasy as a greasy spoon diner can be. Massive menu. Lots of specials. Perpetually irritated owner standing snarling at people, especially the cook, who gave it right back to him. Several older ladies who look like they're probably relatives standing in clusters behind the counter. I ordered three regular pancakes and what I thought was a side of hash browns. I got a big plate of them that cost like $6, but what the heck, I ate as much as I could and got about halfway through before I said 'uncle.' The pancakes were ok, nothing special. The bowling alley location is not any big deal, as the restaurant is in one corner and the entrance is right off the outside. It's just an interesting location for a diner. In all it was ok, a little expensive but to support a family owned business, it's fine, I'll pay it. There were probably things on the menu I'd have enjoyed a lot more than your standard pancakes and hash browns, but I was a little hung over and didn't feel like getting overly creative. Updating review. Recently in during covid times. Waitress wore a mask on her chin. Half of the customers walking in didn't even have a mask on their person at all. It's "that" kind of place. Food was mediocre. Two of the sides weren't cooked like they should have been. I've gotten the same meal for decades here (have since moved further away but was in the area). Most definitely not as good as it used to be. It was not busy...several people at the counter and only one table taken, yet every single open table was dirty; waitress didn't bother to wipe anything down. Place has gone downhill. It was always a dirty hole but had it's redeeming qualities. Now it's just a dirtier hole. I'm guessing the owner finally retired and left it to his son. I loved this place. Huge bummer. read more

What a hidden gem! Cute little full service diner attached to a bowling alley. Only 6 or so tables plus some counter seats. Everyone was super nice. Food was very good and reasonably priced. We came for a late breakfast on a Sunday. I had the Louie skillet with lots of veggies, potatoes and topped with 2 eggs and subbed bacon for ham. My husband had the breakfast special #2 with a stack of pancakes, 3 sausage links and scrambled eggs. Everything was fresh and delicious! I will never eat here again. When we were having breakfast, there was a young man who seemed to be the "runner" between kitchen prep and kitchen. On one of his runs he brings back a stainless steel bucket filled with chopped lettuce and puts the bucket on the FLOOR. The owner/manager (he seemed to be in charge) who was preparing the salad orders, lifts the bucket off of the floor and puts it on top of the prep counter, thus contaminating all the food that has touched/will touch to be served to customers. After he was done making the salad he puts the entire bucket into the fridge below creating another area of contamination. I don't have to work for the health department to know that there were 3 violations right there. The entire place was drab and dingy, our food was lackluster at best. With this many restaurants in the area you can find waaaaay better choices. read more

Verdict? So-so. I come to this restaurant every so often, as my sister and her husband enjoy eating here and playing the slot machines. I was actually introduced to the place about 10 years ago when a band I liked was playing at Rolling Lanes, otherwise I may have never even known about it. Now, as far as the food goes, to me it's mostly average to decent/good, depending on what you order. I tend to get the barbecue beef sandwich with fries, which is actually pretty good and you get a generous portion of meat on the sandwich. My sister has said the house salad is very good. The owner and the waitresses are generally friendly, no real problems there. My main complaint is that the bread sometimes tastes not too fresh. They bring out a basket of rolls and you have no way of knowing if they brought you the same basket that the last table didn't touch (but may have sneezed on for all you know). Other diners where I have gone serve the rolls individually wrapped, which makes you not mind taking one as much and you know they'll taste a lot fresher. I think I even mentioned this to the owner but he seemed to blow off my suggestion as really not important. You'd think you'd want to serve fresh bread to your customers but whatever... So again, not a terrible place, just mediocre. Cool atmosphere though with the bowling lanes under the same roof. I would say give it a try because you may have a more positive feeling about the place but there are probably better places not too far away. read more

Definitely don't judge this place from the outside! Huge menu, large portions, great prices and outstanding service! I had a fiddle faddle hot and my partner got an omelette with spinach and feta.
