Horrible!! If you like frozen food, this is your place. The Mussels were very large and very dry, the scallops did not have a proper sear and were watery ( proof they were frozen), the vegetables (also frozen) had no flavor. The tomato sauce was exactly that "a can of tomato sauce" with absolutely no flavor or seasoning...also very watery. And no way is the pappardelle 'homemade' and let's not forget about the 'day old' bread. Terrible service and way overpriced. read more

Once a favorite, NEVER going back as the owner is unhinged and mistreats customers after trying to overcharge them. Overpriced basic Italian food and pizza that can be bought all over the immediate area at much better prices and without an abusive, arrogant owner who literally insults the customers. We had been going for at least 10 years and have dismissed small issues several times, but no more. Was overcharged $40+ on an already large check with a big group due to the waitress' mistake on entering the wrong information in the computer. Politely asked her to fix it and the owner came out who's actually her husband and tore us to pieces like he was doing us a favor by letting us eat there. The owner was absolutely the rudest, most unprofessional, horribly abusive person I have ever encountered in a restaurant or otherwise. We had a large group and he knows us as regulars yet he did not hesitate to yell at us. We were in total shock, red faced, and despite trying to diffuse the situation, he just kept going on until we agreed to just overpay Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Voting with our feet now. This man and his family are going to have to spend a lot of money on advertising to bring in foolish replacement customers for the ones he is losing because of his outrageous temper and poor business practice.. I've since seen many other reviews calling out the same problem and I have spoken to plenty of friends in the area who no longer go there because of this. read more

I celebrated my mother's 100th birthday at Stefano's Restaurant. All my guests enjoyed their appetizers and dinner. The food is amazing and the service is top-notch! The waiters and waitresses are super friendly and professional, they make you feel right at home. I highly recommend this restaurant for all their services and freshly cooked meals; the food is absolutely delicious. Given Stefano's restaurant's 5-STAR rating, which they truly deserved. The abundant negative reviews about the service, and the hostile attitude that the owners and staff constantly display to thier patron's, and their confrontational manner is without doubt and personal experience. Just filter through and read. Nothing has changed. My tolerance level and tipping point finally gave way. It seems that there is no allowance to question anything with regards to your meal and your bill without abrupt and rude rebuttal from either the owner, the owners wife, his son, or the waitstaff. Not allowed and you can expect to be asked to leave. .....Just do your reasearch Oh and please never question if your meal was properly cooked, or if you can take a doggy bag or use a coupon. Additionally expect an unsanitary bucket of filthy dishes, as well as the remains of prior patrons servings in the waiting vestiule, as well as inside the dining area for your pleasure. Finally, it is not recommended to venture down the proverbial road after dinner to try either the Gelato or the Canoli's. Have wanted to try this place for a long time. My wife and I have driven past multiple times and have always commented that we need to try it. Well tonight we did with my daughter and her husband. My daughter ordered cavatelli and broccoli with chicken, wife chicken francese, I have chicken casa, son in law had chicken dish. Well my daughters the garlic wasn't cooked it looked raw and the sauce looked like oil and pasta water, she did not enjoy it at all. All the dish's came with rosemary mash potatoes with a sprig of rosemary sticking out. Please get away from the rosemary it was way too much tasted like a Christmas tree. The staff were great it was just the food that was not what we expected. Now the pizza side may be different and I will go back to try that side of the establishment but not back to the fine dining side. Came by for the first time to pick up lunch for a client. I ordered Chicken Scarpariello from the lunch menu for myself. What I received was chicken in a salty & gelatinous sauce with mushrooms, and a side of penne in red sauce! I would have liked to have received what I ordered! The chicken itself was decent, but the salty & gelatinous sauce was a real miss even had it been what I ordered. Penne was overcooked and topped with a bland red sauce that could have come from a can. Picked up a couple of plain cheese slices as well. Crust was thin and pizza was okay but for me, it could use a bit more sauce under the cheese. Would go back and order something different. read more

Off the list!!! Hit or miss!!! I had mostly bad and one good experience here. A few years ago I ate here with a group of us and I ordered the special which was Mahi Mahi. It had a strong odor and as soon as I ate it I got an allergic reaction, tingling in mouth and nauseous. I told the server and didn't feel well after eating a bite and I never ordered anything else. Then our friends asked to go back last summer. I was hesitant but had an open mind since a few years had passed. It was great with no issues. Well fast forward to this past Saturday night we went back and I ordered chicken. The place was not busy. I woke up the next morning with explosive diarrhea 5 times!!! My wife and I were driving around looking for a place to eat. We noticed the tables and umbrellas outside and thought 'let's give this place a try'. Boy am I glad we did. The waiter brought over a basket with warm bread and butter and it tasted great. The my wife had the spaghetti and sausage and I had spaghetti and meatballs. Both came with a nice salad. Afterwards we had a couple of traditional cannoli's. Everything tasted great and the price was right. I also love the gigantic parking lot. We will be going back again for sure. I ordered an arugula salad which cost $9.95 there was about $1.50 worth of poor quality ingredients in it... a handful of arugula, an over abundance of red onion, one small and I stress small old hard boiled egg, an the equivalent to maybe a quarter of an old dry tomato the worst display of a salad I've ever been served. Having visited this restaurant on Fathers day, I made a dinner reservation celebrating my dad's 84 th birthday. We were moved to a private space and they let us stay for hours. Everyone loved the food. All 13 of us! Our waitress Lou as so patient and kind, even taking photos for us. We made a great family memory at Stefano's. I've been coming here since I started working on the strip of route 23. Started off with eating plain slices to give it a try and I like them. Started going back often for lunch and the staff is wonderful, they could keep conversation with you and still serve you with 5/5 service. As you can see in the picture I uploaded with this review I enjoy their food. The most recent meal I had was the chicken cutlet with penne sauce and side of pasta. This was the dinner meal and I switched the sauces around which do come at an extra cost which is 1-3 dollar difference. Not bad at all. In my opinion this is one of the best pizzerias to come to on Route 23. The others don't sit well in my stomach and I was told by others the same thing so I started bringing my business over to this pizzeria. Anytime I order they are on time and like I said they know how to greet you and leave you smiling by the time you leave the place. Only thing I would say is a little more extra napkins and utensils would be appreciated but other then that if you are ever driving around the area or coming up route 23 stop by and try the chicken parm platter with vodka sauce. This place is a real gem. It's a pizza place with a nice cozy atmosphere restaurant attached. The first time I went it was for lunch and we sat in the lunch area. The fig salad we ordered was huge and absolutely amazing!!! We asked to speak to the chef because we were in awe of his masterpiece salad. The chef came out and was happy to talk to us....I told him we will be back for dinner some night. Well, you best call in advance if you want to get in there on a weekend. The first time it was all booked up so we couldn't go......we finally got to go and it was worth the wait. The stuffed artichoke was one of the best we ever had and we've tried many. The fig salad was still available even in the winter......can't wait to go there again in the near future. It's a byob which is wonderful....I almost didn't want to write a review for fear it would get even more popular than it already is.....you will not be disappointed.......Enjoy! read more

We were on the road and happened to find this restaurant (which has a dressier dining space next door). Rumpled from a hike, we sat in the pizza takeout section but ate entrees. All three were delicious and generous (plenty to split or save for a second meal at home). We found the menu at the pizzeria half of Stefano's, to be a bit pricey (for a pizzeria). There were only two sized pies. My veggie wrap was delicious, loaded with eggplant. . .but was a bit wet, causing the wrap to unravel. The clams oreganato were likewise delicious, but they were a bit oily. Went again for dinner tonight. Dinner was ok. The bread basket had lots of bread. The packets of butter were very good. The waiter was very hard to understand. The table was kind of tight. Food and portion was ok. The waiter told us that they don't give glasses of water and that we had to buy plastic bottles of water instead so we said that we'd have soda but there was no diet soda. The waiter said that the owners don't want him giving glasses of water yet we saw it on another table. There were 4 of us so it's not like we weren't dropping some cash there. The waiter got our salad orders mixed up. The one who wanted onion got no onion and the one who wanted no onion got onion. The bill came with a credit card fee automatically added on. They claim that they take it off when you pay cash. This place has potential but I feel like they have a ways to go to get more stars. read more

Stopped in here coming back from a work training on the way back to the office . I wasn't disappointed nor was I thrilled . The first thing I noticed was that it was very clean . It it set up nicely just a few tables and go up to the counter to order and they bring it over to you. I saw that they had a ton of unique flavors of homemade cannolis that I would love to try when I'm not dieting. I settled on a veggie wrap. It states it came with fresh mozzarella , zucchini , red roasted pepper and grilled portobello . I sat down at a table and waited what seemed like forever . My sandwich finally came out. I was disappointed to see it came with nothing . Just a wrap on the plate not even a pickle or a side salad or a few olives. I noticed right away there was not any roasted pepper . I was in such a hurry at that point that I didn't say anything. The amount of cheese on it was a joke literally nothing but I will say that the veggies that were on it were very fresh and cooked in a great balsamic dressing and the wrap did not fall apart like most places. If it would have had a bit more cheese and the peppers I probably would have loved it. I do think it is somewhere I would try again maybe it was just an off day . The prices were a bit much for that area but if the sandwich was correct I would pay it. It seems like a nice family business to go to read more

Update to a review I left about 4 years ago. We had been dining at Stefano's regularly for years up until 2017 when we stopped for one reason...the excessive amount of time we waited for our meal after ordering. By excessive, I mean 60-90 minutes easily. And not once, but a chronic problem that seemed to get worse with every visit. The final straw was an almost 2 hour wait where just about walked out before our food arrived and vowed never to return. 4 years later, things must have gotten better, right? So we decided we would give the restaurant another try. Unfortunately it only took a couple of visits to realize nothing has changed. We even made earlier reservations to try and avoid going when it would presumably be busier. Didn't matter. On a very recent visit, once again over an hour after we ordered our meal we still hadn't received our food. However, tables seated next and around us who had clearly arrived and ordered after us did and were literally half way through eating their meals when we asked our server what happened with our order? It arrived shortly thereafter, but still it was close to 90 minutes after we had been seated. The servers are really nice and friendly, the food is absolutely delicious, the atmosphere is warm and the restaurant is easy to reach with plenty of parking. This could easily be a great restaurant that would normally receive a 4 or 5 star review but for some reason they just cannot get it together logistically in the kitchen. Part of a good dining experience is NOT getting so frustrated that you never want to return but somehow that point seems to have been missed by whomever manages Stefano's. read more

My daughter used to ride horses across the street at North Jersey Equestrian Center. Stefano's was who we used for delivery when we wanted pizza. Normally I don't like a pizza with too many toppings. But they make a pene pizza with vodka sauce that is incredible! You're never sure if you should start eating it with a fork or the traditional way. One night we all decided to go and eat there. There were about 12 of us. Our server was very friendly and had no problem pushing a few tables together for our group. The fried calamari was cooked to perfection. Sometimes it's rubbery meaning it was overcooked. Not here. They did it up right and it was light and tender. For my main I got the Veal Saltimbocca. It was delicious! Tender, thinly pounded slices of veal over a bed of spinache with mashed potatoes spread out under that. I would definitely get that again! read more

Recently came here for a rehearsal dinner for a wedding and everything was beautifully set up. They were very friendly and lenient with how the couple wanted to place everything and the service was very friendly. The servers were cooperative and understanding of the big party at the restaurant. The food was good even though, they were very timely spaced about but it was nice that I wasn't too full before the next course came out. The vodka penne was AMAZING, I wish I had more! On our next stop to find the greatest Margherita pie... Stefano's PIzzeria in Pompton Plains, NJ. Another place we've passed by so many times while driving on Route 23. We finally stopped. So, what did we order? We went with their regular Margherita (only small was available), a square Margherita, and this one caught our eye... a Napolitano Square. Let's start with that. Upon opening the box, it looks like a typical square pie with regular mozzarella. We were suspicious.. how exactly was this different than a regular square pie? First bite... and a surprise... vodka sauce. This was very good. It is advertised with buffalo mozzarella but the mozz was no different and very greasy. The crust was very good and thin; you didn't feel 'too awful' after eating a few slices. The grease was a bit much but the vodka sauce was a nice surprise. Next... the regular Margherita. So, we are going to add the square Margherita here as well because...well...they both tasted different. We did scratch our heads on this one but can only conclude that the square was actually a grandma pie that wasn't named that on the menu. The regular Margherita, unfortunately, was bland. It had the right ingredients - fresh mozz, shredded basil, fresh sauce, and a nice thin crispy crust. It just didn't have the taste BUT when we tried the 'Square Margherita' ... homerun Stefano's! Loved it. Same crust size, taste, as the Napolitano, fresh mozz; sauce was fresh and delicious; shredded basil added even more flavor. Honestly, whatever sauce you are using for this pie, just put that on your regular Margherita. Overall, absolutely worth a stop if you're in the Pompton Plains area on Rt. 23 South.
