I have been here many times.still looks the same. Went for dinner. They aways have fresh items onthere salad bar. I did not car for the beef barly soup.it as rather tastless, grease or faty broth. They always have fresh bread and there were 2 kinds of crackers for the soup. My husband had prime rib. I had a special. Shrimp,chicken pasta spinach. I did have to add salt. Black pepper, grated cheese and crushed red pepper to make it better. But even so, I would of recommend it. Fresh. The shrimp was perfect not over cooked same as the chicken and pasta. Delish. It was lightly battered but even that help up to the next day. Leftovers went down well. Tasted like more! I think they called it some sort of florenten dish. I only had a cold beer so I can not speak of any of the other choices that they may have had. I went with the thoughts of trying some German food but I was happy with my dinner chioice. This place was recommended to me by someone from a local marina. I would have never found it if he didn't say something. Well I'm glad he did. Especially when he said they have excellent prime rib. So that's what I ordered medium rare with a baked potato. It was excellent. I'm so glad I finally found another hidden place that has excellent prime rib. It had been almost 25 years since I'd last visited Steger Haus and I still remembered the last meal I'd had there, a sweet tasting German version of beef stroghanoff with German potato salad back in 1986 when I'd brought a date with me to meet my grand dad. This time wasn't as memorable, but the food was still pretty good and I was in the mood for some fish. The salad bar was well stocked, but the Manhattan clam chowder didn't have much in the way of clams in it. The crab stuffed broiled Cajun haddock was stuffed with imitation crab. The German potato salad is not your run of the mill canned German potato salad. This is home made and not too sweet, not too tart, just the right touch of seasoning and served hot. Truth be told, while I was looking for fish, I was disappointed in the menu in that there were very few authentic German selections anymore. In all fairness, the meal was tasty and filling, the haddock was flaky not overdone and well spiced, but next time, I going for the wiener-schnitzel. read more

My wife and I have been patronizing this restaurant, for Sunday evening meal's, for a number of years. Never, have we been disappointed. An exceptional salad bar, with homemade relishes and specialty salads, is always well stocked, and clean. The hot soup at the end of the salad bar, which changes daily, has always been wonderful, and filled to overflowing with the main ingredient. The clam chowder has more clams than clambake, and the beef stew is savory with large chunks of delicious beef. This place knows how to cook fish. The fish is always flaky and moist, and savory and never overdone. Scallops are soft and tender, succulent and delicious.the prime rib beautifully prepared, juicy and moist, and for a real treat try the stuffed pork chop. Wow! Service is attentive, without being overbearing, and extremely personable and pleasant. You'll have to hunt for this place, as is well off the beaten path, but the trip and the hunt are well worth it. I was excited to go here and yes there is a salad bar, and it is simply that (ice berg lettuce, some toppings and dressings), the soup was starchy (corn starchy or floury) and lacked ingredients. The place smelled of mold, it is dark and dank inside and as you walk in the front door. I wish we had tried a German item but we went for their prime rib night. I wouldn't suggest it. We've eaten here probably 4 times over the years. When it's good, it is pretty good although not stellar. When it's bad, it's terrible. Second last time we were there, the salad bar was incredible. Large variety of very fresh ingredients and very clean. The last time we were there it was disgusting, limp veggies, flies, not at all appetizing. Last time we were there with a large group (8 people). The menu items ordered ranged from german dishes to beef and fish. A full half of our group were quite ill, either later that night or the next day. Perhaps there's an issue with some of the cooks, I don't know or care. What a terrible experience. We had a 7 PM reservation. When we arrived at 655 the hostess didn't even acknowledge us till 7:. She saw us and the other parties standing there waiting to be greeted but kept walking right past us to task. Not even a hello or smile. When she finally did check us in she said it's going to be a little while. No time frame, no invitation to sit at the bar and wait. We sat at the bar and ordered drinks. At 7:23 we were led to our table. Walked through an antiquated and dingy dining room. My chair was so stained I had to switch it for a different one as I didn't want to soil my slacks. I took FOREVER for the waitress to come over. When she finally took our orders she invited us to visit the salad bar. The salad bar was a joke. There were flies hovering around it and it consisted of bagged iceberg lettuce, grape tomatoes, some sliced green pepper and full radishes. Really? You couldn't slice the radishes? The highlight of the salad bar was the safe to eat prepackaged bread sticks. The remainder was some varieties of potato salad which I steered clear of due to the flies. By 7:55 I was pretty hungry and pretty annoyed and flagged the waitress down. I politely noted that we had arrived for a 7 pm reservation and it was almost 8 and we had yet to be served. Her response was that she had a large party in the other room and they were very busy (half the place was empty with good reason). This was not my problem, but I didn't want to give her a hard time if the kitchen was backed up so we sat and waited some more. About 8:10 the food arrived. My steak was undercooked and had ZERO flavor. My girlfriend had the prime rib and it was mostly jelly fat. I mean not prime rib fatty, but exceptionally fatty. At this point we were hungry and just wanted to eat and get on with the evening. I had ordered steamed veggies in lieu of a potato. I noticed that the veggies were in a bowl full of melted butter. After about 5 more minutes I was able to flag down the ever absent waitress to let her know my steamed veggies were soaking in 2 inches of butter. She became hostile and defensive and said thats how they were prepared there. I asked if I could have a fresh set no butter and she rolled her eyes and was just really nasty about it. Instead of defending the way they prepared them she could have just listened and replaced it with something else to make the customer happy. YOU KNOW THE CUSTOMER. THE ONE WHO PAYS TO EAT THERE. At this point I requested a manager and she said she was the manager. Well THAT EXPLAINS EVERYTHING. I told her to take my plate away I didn't want it would not order anything else. I didn't want to ruin my girlfriends night so I told her to eat her meal and I would grab something later. The manager then told me I would have to pay for the soup and salad bar. To which I replied I would not. My girlfriend said her food was disgusting and she did not want it either. We paid for our drinks and left. NEVER TO RETURN. read more

I was fairly excited to try this place. It enjoys a pretty good word of mouth reputation in the greater Rochester area. I had been craving some authentic German fare. Well do not go here for German food. My first and greatest error was expecting German food like... ya know... from Germany. What you get is German food... like an old 2nd or 3rd generation German person fumbles to put together. The food wasn't "bad" it just wasn't what I wanted. The prices are very affordable so there is that. The service was sub-par even for the middle of nowhere. I wanted my waitress to turn towards the lake and begin walking as if called by some higher power, and just keep walking, and walking, and walking until she found herself fully submerged in the water where she belongs. We walked in at 6:50-7:00pm food didn't hit the table till 8:40. This was not the fault of the cooks as menus didn't arrive till 7:45.... I will say if you have living old people in your family that LOVE LOVE LOVE salad bars (as many 65+ crowd do) this place has a salad bar straight out of your grandpa's wet dream. All in all it wasn't like I got sick. The food is edible and affordable. The waitress needed remedial training in being a human. The place is way to far from Rochester. That's it. read more

I have never heard of putting green pepper in it and there was no trace of vinegar in it at all. First time here... my wife and I had heard that they had some German food on the menu, which we love. We both ordered the sauerbraten. Unfortunately, both servings tasted different. My wife's portion was, just OK. Mine was downright revolting. Tasted old, freezer burned, just not good at all. To her credit, the waitress took it back and let me order something else. I had the wiener schnitzel, which was pretty good, though it could have been called veal picatta. My husband and I are seasonal people in the area and have visited Steger Haus on a regular (weekly) basis for years. We've never had a bad meal, and the service (at least at lunch time) has been exceptional. Love the beer battered fish fry (or fish sandwich), and the various schnitzel sandwiches (either grilled or fried) are always good. (Love the sauce that comes with the boneless chicken sandwich.) Jim makes really good soup (he even made us a special batch when we visited at Christmastime). The drinks are excellent. (We've quit going to other places that water them down.) We first came here last year for 4th of July weekend, and were really impressed. Looks can be deceiving. While the building is need of renovations, the food is top notch. We came back again this weekend and it was not as good as we remembered. Nice wine and beer selection, if small. Ordered the garlic chicken and broccoli. It was all right but the chicken was quite bland and not a good cut of meat. It would have been more interesting if it had been grilled, or something similar. Still, we ordered from all over the menu for our party. Jaeger schnitzel and Weiner schnitzel, scallops, steak, chicken french--all quite ok but not worth the $17-20 price. The salad bar has so much variety and is worth it all on its own. And the desserts are deadly good. German chocolate cake and cheesecake and pies--so tasty and delicious. I have mixed feelings about this place, which we tried while on vacation. On the plus side, the food was good and plentiful, and the waitress pleasant and attentive. The salad bar was rather limited. But I had the jaegerschnitzel, and it was wonderfully lemony and larger than I could eat. It was Wednesday, which was Prime Rib Special night, and my husband said his prime rib was really wonderful. But the visit started out badly when the hostess flatly stated that there was no reservation for us (I personally heard my husband make the call.) She seated us, but acted like she was doing us a favor -- she gave the distinct impression she didn't believe that we'd called. went to the steger haus for the first time on aug 6,2021 with 3 friends, one who wanted to go to have the crab legs, she was told they had no crab, due to the high market price. she was dissapointed but ordered the prime rib, medium with garlic noodles. when the meal arrived, she could not cut her meat and blood covered her whole plate. she asked the waitress to please have them cook it some more. she took it away, came back with one less rare. she could not cut it, took one bite and spit it out in her napkin. she then had a noodle and could not swallow that. there was a couple at another table that we heard order crab. the waitress took her order and within a few minutes she had her crab! we decided to leave got 2 go boxes, 2 of the women went to the bar and asked to talk to a manager. out came the owner/manager. they told him the problem, and he said the waitress (the same one we had) didnt know. the owner told them to get the f**k out, f*****g dont want you here! she stated i simply wanted to know why she told us they had no crab! he said get the f**k out i am calling the police! that led to some yelling between them, at that point we exited the building, in the parking lot the bartender came out swearing letting the f bombs fly, told us the cops were on the way! they never offered any apology or compensation, nothing but swearing... no matter what a customer says you have to maintain decency, and try to make things right! then the waitress called us "trailer trash". i will never step foot in that place again! it was dark and stuffy, waitresses were not observant, or paid attention to us. it looked old and dank and no one ate their entree, nothing special and everyone working there looked like they hated their job! i do not reccomend this place. read more
