WOW. I usually come to Monterey/Carmel area for a stress free getaway from the city and this particular store caused nothing but stress. My cousin was in the mood to treat herself to jewelry, I was more in a browsing mood knowing that I wanted to save $ for Carmel-By-The-Sea shopping. My cousin was being helped by a friendly BRUNETTE sales lady, I don't know her name but she was the quiet and more classy one. I was unlucky when I stumbled in because this LOUD,petite,obnoxious BLONDE sales lady with rings on all her fingers was the one who helped me. I have to describe her features because I do not know her name. She didn't say 'Hi', I had to seek her help when I found something cute and within my budget. Keep in mind, this store was completely empty except for my cousin who was their only customer browsing at the time I walked in. I'm not into diamonds but love natural rocks/gems, I go to gem shows often; I prefer SS, WG or platinum and if I do wear gold, I prefer two toned. I wasn't looking for diamonds, pearls - nothing flashy. In fact, I wasn't looking for anything at all, I just waltzed in after getting Starbucks to get my cousin inside this store. So when I explained the type of jewelry I was into to the obnoxious sales lady she showed me a natural ruby set in sterling silver: after she insulted me when I asked about a pink stone set on what I thought was sterling silver, she blurted out while walking away, "OH YOU WOULDN'T BE INTERESTED IN THAT IT'S IN THE THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS." (uh OK, didn't have to be so abrasive) Anyway, the ss natural ruby ring was divine, however, I did not appreciate the way in which the sales lady PUSHED me to buy the ring and matching bracelet. Sales people are sales people, I get it BUT there is a fine line between a pushy salesperson, and a salesperson who is SO desperate for a sale they make themselves look like complete JACKHOLES. Here are some of the sales tactics she used on me in quotes: "It's a STEAL! You'll kick yourself in the butt if you don't buy it." "I don't know what you have to think about? You know you want to buy it." (uh my vacation budget and how I've budgeted to do most my shopping in Carmel plus the money I'm spending at the Spa this weekend - I'm on a budget lady!) "If you don't buy it I guarantee you when you put it down someone else will, It's a STEAL!" "If you don't buy it, I'll buy it." (referring to the natural ruby bracelet.) AFTER I told her I wanted to show my cousin (meaning, BACK OFF lady, I want my cousin's opinion now.) THE abrasive sales lady followed me like a stalker and as I was asking my cousin what my COUSIN thought of the piece the tacky stalker saleslady butted in to the conversation and tried selling it to my cousin-to convince ME to buy it! In the end I decided I loved the ring but needed to think about the bracelet. While the obnoxious BLONDE saleslady was ringing me up, she held up the bracelet in the air and yelled out to a couple as they were walking out the door, "HERE'S A NATURAL RUBY BRACELET FOR SALE, IT'S A STEAL FOR NATURAL RUBY, SHE DOESN'T WANT IT SO IT'S AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE!" gasp, I thought that was rude to do right in front of me with this salesperson knowing that I truly did like the bracelet but needed to think about it budget wise. Anyway, I let that first tacky sales lady moment go. But then she blurted out loud for the entire store to hear: "I'M GOING TO PUT THIS BRACELET IN A WINDOW ANY WINDOW, I DON'T CARE WHICH ONE IT'S GOING TO SELL BECAUSE IT'S A STEAL!!" Um really, was that necessary? For her to go further rubbing in my face that I wasn't buying it? That was the last straw after 30 minutes of pushing, being abrasive, and being a complete stalker-a$$hole throughout my browsing experience. Needless to say, I changed my mind about the ring. After her last comment I felt sick to my stomach and felt sick about purchasing at this store period. I told the saleslady I've changed my mind, she asked why, I let her know I didn't appreciate what she just did and quoted her on what she said and let her know I thought it was tacky and rude - that she could have waited for me to leave to do what she did to the couple walking out the door (obviously not doing a purchase, just browsing), and that she could have refrained from her window display for a steal" comment for afterwards as well. As I was walking out, she said loudly, "Oh GREAT, I cleaned this ring for nothing, now I can't find the tag. Oh well, it's not like it was a thousand dollar sale anyway!" So yeah the TACKY BLONDE OBNOXIOUS SA didn't lose out on a $1K sale but initially I was a browser she didn't have to put any effort into it from the first. I know my own style, I know what I like: pink/red gemstones. I saw one because she pointed out the cabinet. I've been in this store before but have never purchased anything. They always sell a small otter pendant, laying on it's back & holding either a pearl or diamond. The price is about $110 for the pearl. They sell the same item in silver. They're known for their opals and have lots of pendants, bracelets, earrings with opals. It's near the Zucchini magic shop so we wandered in to browse while the kids ran off to find magic stuff. The sales lady was helpful but I couldn't help but get the impression she was a little too enthused with trying to get us to make a purchase. If you love to look at baubles and unique Monterey items, they also sell a pendant with a Monterey cypress tree. It's nice, but... would you wear a tree around your neck? Overall I had a wonderful experience shopping at Steinbeck Jewelers. The selection and service was great. I went in to buy a necklace and earring set for my wife for Valintines day. The selection was wonderful and Lois did a wonderful job helping me pick something out in my price range. Lois was extremely friendly and patient as we went through just about every opal earing and pendent combination in the store, probably several times (I was indecisive at times, but Lois was very patient). She was very informative and helpful without being pushy, she did not push any particular product or item, overall a very pleasant experience. I went to this store with my cousin and I must say my overall experience was okay, however because of the experience my cousin had I had to give this one star. When I first came into the store an obnoxious blond sales associate asked me, "So what are you looking for." I was shocked because that wasn't a proper greeting, in my opinion. Then she kept following me around the store trying to pressure me to buy something. I was getting annoyed because I felt like she was literally breathing down my back trying to get a sale. She was more annoying and obnoxious than she was helpful. Luckily, another sales associate came and assisted me because the obnoxious blond began helping my cousin. I was very fortunate because the second sales associate was a lot more helpful and less pushy. She was nice and gave me the space to try different pieces with out adding her opinion like the previous sales associate. I ended up buying a bracelet that day and overall I was happy with my purchase. My cousin, however did not have such a good experience and I had to base a part of my review on her experience considering I witnessed the whole ordeal. The sales associate, who was originally helping me started to help her. I noticed she was very pushy and very quick to try to make the sale. She kept repeating that the bracelet and ring was a steal and "she would kick herself in the butt if she did not buy it." She was unprofessional and she definitely put too much pressure on my cousin to buy the items. As this was going on I noticed that the other sales associate was shaking her head in disgust and disapproval because she knew the Blondy was over doing it. Overall, my cousin decided to pass on the purchase and as we were leaving the store the blond sales associate had the nerve to broadcast the fact that a ruby ring and bracelet was on sate to all of the customers in the store, therefore attempting to make my cousin feel bad for not making the purchase. That sales associate was rude and in need of some training in manners and professionalism. I love this spot. I've had nothing but great service here. Every time I come in (which is several times a year), I've always had excellent costumer service, whether I'm looking at cheap items or not! I admit, I have VERY simple taste. The items I've bought here are all the least expensive ones they offer. NEVER have I felt pressure to buy anything else. To the contrary: they acted as if I were buying an expensive piece of jewelry: polishing it, treating us with respect, and talking to us like we were friends. I've bought pendants here (I prefer silver, so the otter with a real pearl or the cypress tree are awesome deals), and I've never spent more than $20 each time. The sales people are so friendly! I brought a friend here (a virgin to the area), and she had the same experience I did: super friendly service even though she was only spending $18. If you want fine jewelry, they have wonderful choices. If you want a reasonably priced souvenir that LOOKS like an expensive item, or even if you just want to check out a cool shop with a lot of inventory and friendly staff (and I've been helped several time by a "blondie," thank you very much)...come check it out! read more

The blonde sales girl that helped us was bit pushy but was lucky that we actually found a ring I wanted. Otherwise we would have just walked out if there. The blonde girl just keep standing by us even when my husband and I were trying to talk in private about the rings we were looking at to discuss if we wanted to actually get them or not. We will return for other things because they have an amazing inventory, and even though she was a bit pushy and too much in our space she was nice and did find out if we could resize my ring or not. Salesperson DeAnn Brady went out of her way on more than one occasion to track down information for us and to obtain a replacement piece for a jewelry item purchased elsewhere. We have made several purchases there, always to our satisfaction. They carry items in a wide range of prices and styles. I'm flabbergasted by the negative review posted here. I was able to work at Steinbeck Jewelers and Tamarack G for almost a year and it was a wonderful shop. The management there is extremely experienced and knowledgeable, and great at training new employees. They definitely expect you to learn a lot yourself and Always (even when they have days off and you have to call) help by answering questions. The sales people are trained on the inventory and expected to be personable and helpful. The majority of people who stop in are tourists in a good mood, so that is nice. The biggest down side if you are looking for work here is the pay compared to the area and inability to move up in the company when the workers in higher positions have been there for over 25 years (although the experience is for sure a possitive for clients wanting very knowledgeable help). It is a great place to work if you are in school or have another income. I really appreciated the supportive staff and amazing jewelry. It is an even better place to find gorgeous, unique items. I have never shopped in this store before, however I was scheduled to interview for a PT sales associate position here and right when I walked into the store I felt a bad vibe from the lady at the register who happened to be the lady I was interviewing with. It was kind of like a "pretty woman" moment, you know when she walks into the boutique and they judge her by her looks, yeah just like that! I walk in, smile and say hello. The lady at the register looks up at me from counting funds from the register and says very dry "were you looking for anything" I smile and say that I have an interview with DeAnn. She tells me the interview is at 1130, I inform her that it was actually at 11 ( I have the email for confirmation). She hands me an application, I take it, and fill it out partially, and decide that I don't want to be a part of such a negative atmosphere nor do I want to be a part of a team that judges people based off looks. if I could give zero or negative stars I would. this is long but i think it is important for future customers to know. my husband and I were in Monterey for my birthday at the end of October, 2018 and we stumbled across this store. we don't look at jewelry very often and I was excited when my husband said "let's go in." we were greeted by the cutest girl and she was very attentive. I immediately found a baguette eternity ring that I fell in love with and my husband said "let's get it." I looked around a little more and came across a beautiful tennis bracelet. i was very excited when we ended up purchasing both. i wore them out of the store and them we left Monterey and headed to SF for the rest of our weekend. later that evening when we were at dinner i noticed that one of the stones in the bracelet was missing. i was HEARTBROKEN. the next morning we cancelled our other plans and returned to Monterey to ask about returning or exchanging the bracelet. i understand that Steinbeck's has a No Returns Policy but i hoped that they would make an exception considering i had owned it for less than 24 hours. when we arrived at the store we were greeted by DeAnn and she couldn't have been more rude and unaccommodating. she inferred that i had somehow misused the bracelet and it was my fault that the stone fell out. she refused to replace or let me exchange the bracelet. she said that she would show it to their jeweler for repair but couldn't guarantee that i wouldn't be charged for the repair until he looked at it. she then proceeded to tell me that the bracelet was very delicate and that the same issue could happen again and that i would be responsible for any further issues. my reply was "why would they sell something that they knew would have problems and why wasn't i warned about this?" IF I HAD BEEN INFORMED ABOUT THIS I WOULD HAVE NEVER PURCHASED IT!!! i left the bracelet and was told i would be called about if i would be responsible for the repair. long story long, i received the bracelet in the mail about a 3 weeks later. no note. no explanation. not even in a box. just the repaired bracelet in an envelope fast forward a few weeks later to thanksgiving. i had not worn the bracelet because i was worried about what DeAnn had said about it breaking again but i wanted to wear it for the holiday. as i was putting it on IT BROKE!!!!!!!!! so here i am with a bracelet that i tried to wear twice and it broke twice. i contacted them again about a possible store credit. because i live 2 hours away from Monterey i mailed the bracelet to the store. two weeks later i received the bracelet back from them in the mail. no note, no communication of any kind, just the bracelet!!! i have never encountered such rude treatment in my life!!! in the mean time i contacted my credit card to inform them of the problem. read more

My boyfriend & I were in Monterey last week on vacation celebrating my birthday. We went into this jewelry shop in search of a birthday gift he was letting me pick out. However, when we walked in we were not greeted by either one of the two sales associates, who were preoccupied with each other discussing something that shouldn't have been discussed in front of customers - especially ones literally waiting to spend money (mind you we were the only people in the store at the time). A couple of pieces caught my eye and even though I lingered in front of several cases for a few moments, the sales associates had yet to even look up at us and away from their conversation. Two other women walked in and were not greeted either. At this point I just became annoyed with the lack of service this store had to offer and promptly left empty-handed and dissatisfied.
