What a memorably delightful meal. From the time we sat down and tried our first pilsner to the last bite of our dishes. Our server was great and took time to explain their beers and specials, even though they were pretty busy. We celebrated our anniversary here. Nice, intimate setting. The flank steak was cooked perfectly to my request and my husband's order of Jaeger Schnitzel pork cutlet was so tender and crisp on the outside. I need to find spaetzle now someplace near me (or a good recipe) because the appetizer here with the cheese, bacon and caramelized onions has me hooked! I have only two complaints when it comes to Das Steinhaus: the space is too small, and the environment is too sterile. Somehow they need to make it a little more cozy. Everything else about my visit was sublime. I loved the staff and the fact that Tuesday nights they play vinyl records. Beer, food, and excellent music. What more could you ask for? I had the quail, and my dining companion had the jager schnitzel. The quail was a challenge to consume, and I really think you just need to pick that tiny bird up and eat it with your hands! RAWR! I wish I had gotten the jager schnitzel, only because it was less expensive and more food. I sampled the deep-fried pork cutlet, and instantly I was in love! I have to say, outside of my visit to the Keweenaw Peninsula, I very much enjoyed my dinner in Marquette with a good friend. We both finished everything on our plates and even split a dessert! I wish I remembered what we had. It was chocolate cake, very moist. Vegetarians need not worry, there are different dishes served daily! So happy to find this place while traveling to Marquette. I always love good schnitzel and this place didn't let me down. We had the schnitzels (only took one picture, too busy eating) and the absolutely delicious charcuterie board with some of the best mustards and cheeses I have ever had. We won't return. 3 margaritas cost $45.00. This wouldn't be an issue if they normal size glasses. However, they were super small champaign glasses with approx. 1/2 a shot of tequila. We waited for over an hour for our food, and when we got it, the food was cold, and the gravy had solidified. We spent over $230 for four people. Too much money for this type of service. read more

This was our second visit, decided to try the new breakfast offerings. Over the top, doesn't really cover it. The menu format is different and allows you to really customize your meal, if you want to stray from the set entrees. I had the cheese and bacon omellet with a side of walleye...Great. My husband had the eggs benedict with a side of duck confit. I dare you to find any better anywhere, the duck was done to perfection. Can't wait for another chance to dine or breakfast there again. My vegetarian friend made a reservation for dinner at Steinhaus, and I was surprised reading the menu. The menu is not big at all, and it's filled with meat. There was one vegetarian entree option, so I was crossing my fingers that it was good but trusted her recommendation if she likes it too. We got there early so we sat at the bar for some drinks first. I asked about the rose, and the server was spot on - it was great. Not too sweet, not too dry, a bit of effervescence. Everyone was really enjoying their drinks, and the server was great at suggestions. We sat and ordered right away, especially given there's not much to choose from. The food came quickly, and I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. The vegetarian dish had complex flavors and didn't leave me wishing for more flavor. The broccolini was insanely good. I enjoyed every bite of the dish. Unfortunately, that's the worst part of the experience, I quickly ate every bite on the plate, yet I actually left hungry. The food is not cheap. $20 for a dish with zero protein other than one egg. And while good, I felt there should be much more food on the plate for $20. That part of the experience left me very underwhelmed. read more

My fellow Yelpers were spot on with Steinhaus! It's in a great location in downtown Marquette. Although the interior is small (about 15 tables), I never felt crowded or closed in. There is a small bar in the back of the restaurant with about 5 stools. It has an authentic feel to it, with some very nice murals up front and walls filled with beer steins and pictures of the homeland. Service was very friendly and attentive the whole meal. Our server helped us newbies navigate the menu, and made some solid recommendations. The food is the main reason for 5 stars, it was just perfect. We started with the house-made pretzels and the cheese platter. The pretzels were great, and the house-made mustards had some serious kick. The cheese platter has a nice variety and was also excellent. For my entree, I went traditional and had the wiener schnitzel. I can say with confidence this was the best wiener schnitzel I've ever had (note: I've never been to Germany or Austria). It was perfect, with a crunchy and flavorful crust and tender veal. It came with spatzle and red cabbage, also very good. Also of note is the fresh bread, which came out warm, moist, and dense, just excellent. I sampled the bratwurst which was very good. The menu is small, but everything on it sounded appealing. They have sandwiches/burgers, various schnitzel dishes, bratwurst platters, and a good selection of appetizers and sides. They have some signature cocktails, and I enjoyed the Maple Old Fashioned. In addition to cocktails they had a few beers on tap and a lot of bottled beer. They also have a small wine selection. Pricing on the food and drinks was reasonable. If you're in Marquette, Steinhaus is definitely worth a look! read more

Superb! One of the best places to go for a quality dinner in the area. This is a very small restaurant and what a hidden gem! I've had the vegetarian plate the last two times and both times, it has been wonderful. Everything on the plate is chosen carefully and pairs very well with each other. They have farm to table dishes, which leads to a menu that's constantly changing... and also a little pricier than most in the area--but completely worth it. I have eaten here four times, and everybody's dishes have been amazing and extremely fresh every time. Heads up: some portions are small, but most are not... perhaps ask your server if this would be an issue for you. We have only ordered an appetizer once and it was small for our table of four but we all had a few succulent bites. During our last visit, my bf got the Wiener schnitzel and my dad had the jäger schnitzel.... And they both couldn't stop raving how good they were. (Trust me... This is very inconsistent with my father's usual quiet appreciation). I tried nibbles of both, and they were both flavorful and tender. We also enjoy the beer selection when we come here... We were visiting the area and stumbled into this place. It was a little crowded and we didn't have a reservation. We were able to get a table in the bar area. Everyone was super nice and the service was great. The women that sat us was also the server. She was amazing, I was amazed she was able to handle all the tables, seat people and answer the phone. There was only a few selections on the menu, but the food was amazing. I've been to Germany and this would be in my opinion very close. I would highly recommend coming in if you are in the area and like German food, you won't leave disappointed or hungry! Anytime I come to Marquette I'll be coming here for dinner. read more

We were new to the area and saw the ratings on yelp and wanted to try it for breakfast. The staff was super rude. First off we stood by the front door and the staff ignored us for over 20 minutes. Lots of empty tables. Finally someone came over and asked how many people were on our party (4) and then said she would be back. Waited another 15 minutes and another girl came over and said that they unfortunately could not seat us for the rest of the day (this was at 9 am), no other explanation. This is a small restaurant with not much of entrance from the street, but once you are inside the magic happens! The owner was doing a Tiki Tuesday theme, but my husband and I, who are of German heritage came only for the German cuisine. We ordered the kasespatzle for appetizer, I can't begin to describe how delicious this was! It was sautéed in butter to perfection but also contained bacon, onion and cheese! Of course this is a must try!! My husband had the Wiener schnitzel and I had the jager schnitzel. Both entrees came with braised red cabbage and another round of the yummy, buttery spatzle! The flavors were just like grandma's! The portions were large so you won't go away hungry. The customer service was excellent! YUM! SO GLAD we decided to have brunch here! The restaurant is affiliated with a local family farm, and they try to use fresh ingredients from there as much as possible. The eggs were from there, and were delicious. One of us had the veggie hash and one had the schnitzel. The coffee was SO GOOD, it came from a local roaster. I also had the carrot ginger juice. We all shared the brioche French toast, which we agreed was divine. The bread is made at a French Patisserie just down the street; we had no idea there was a French bakery opening here in a few months! YAY! We also had their croissants, which are made by the Patisserie. OH. SO. GOOD. Seriously right up there with croissants we had in France. The service was also really good, our server was attentive and friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu and restaurant. We definitely want to come back for drinks, they have a nice beer list, happy hour 4-6, and the Vitamin (B)runch looks like it could cure you of any ailments. read more

We used to live in Marquette and frequented the Steinhaus. For our wedding anniversary we reserved a table for 6 at 7pm. At the time of booking I was asked if we were celebrating anything special that evening and I shared it was our wedding anniversary, we were visiting from Vancouver, Canada, and this was our "have to do" stop when in town. Night of the reservation we all got dressed up, arrived at about 6:50pm and were seated. The server let us know they had run out of all flavors of brats, all pretzels, and had no seasonal vegetable left. If you have not been here before, the food menu is 85% of these items. The server pointed at a very large table of about 20+ and told us that that table had polished off the inventory. I know this restaurant is focused on local and fresh, but the ordering and predictions need to be better sorted out. This is not the first time we have encountered this, but it was definitely the first where it was early-ish in the evening and the staff had asked why we were booking. I also find it hard to believe the Steinhaus sat 20+ people without a reservation on such a busy day. We decided to leave, and being it was July 3rd, right before the holiday we went to 6 different restaurants trying to finding a seat. I'm sure next year when we visit Marquette we will stop and hopefully have dinner, but I won't hold my breath. A positive: "The Flag" drink is amazing. read more

I went here for brunch recently and loved all of the food! Ordered the french toast and steak and eggs. Everything was cooked perfectly and was delicious. The bacon was some of the best I've ever tasted. Service was very friendly and attentive - our coffees and waters were refilled frequently. I tried the Michigan Mule. It was very good and refreshing. For dinner I ordered the Wiener Schnitzel. It came with spatzel which was delicious. Had a terrific experience. We were in the UP on college tours and we're looking for a great place to celebrate my son's birthday. Based on the reviews and my son's love of all things German, this seemed like an obvious choice and so glad we did. The atmosphere was warm and inviting and the food was really wonderful, including my husband's and he was not particularly excited about the idea of German cuisine. From appetizers (charcuterie board ) to entrees (jager schnitzel and short ribs) to dessert (cheesecake and flourless chocolate cake) everything was simply delicious. The only element that makes this a 4-star rather than a 5-star review is while the service was entirely adequate, it was not exceptional. A more personable waitstaff would have elevated what was a delicious meal to a truly excellent "dining experience." That being said, I would still return to The Steinhaus and gladly. read more

For dinner I ordered the Jager Schnitzel. The spatzel underneath is topped with a breaded pork cutlet, smothered with a mushroom rahmsauce, and I added an egg for $1 extra. Add the egg, it is worth it! It also comes with a side of red cabbage. If you can get a little bit of everything on the fork together, it is amazing. My only negative comment would be that I wanted more of the sauce! It was on the dry side. The menu changes as the local ingredients do and are printed out on a daily basis. They use fresh ingredients and all of the recipes are homemade. I would love to come here to eat again and get the "Four Course Tasting Menu" to be on the more adventurous side (and there are no substitutions). It is absolutely delicious! I had the Jager Schnitzel (definitely add the egg), with Spatzel and Boursin Potato Purée. Absolutely delicious! The beer, service and music were also great. Was in Marquette for a winter weekend and tried to eat here twice. They close for a couple of hours in the middle of the day on weekends. The first time I tried to come in, it was at 1:30 (30 minutes before the break), and they had locked the doors. That was aggravating, but then I went back the next day at 1 -- a full hour before they closed for a break -- and when I went inside, they refused me service (even just a drink) saying the kitchen had closed. With 10 years in restaurant training and management, I can't fathom this kind of business practice. No problem... the next time I'm in Marquette, I definitely won't go back, if they're even still in business since they apparently don't want guests. read more

So we entered from the "back" which is hard to tell if it's really the back. But there's no hostess stand or anything, and you see the bar and stuff right away. We waited a few minutes, and no one said A THING. So we figured it's a seat yourself place, and sat down. The hostess came by a while later, and said that we may need to move because they had to save 4-top tables for bigger parties. Eventually left us where we were, but the start of the experience was definitely rough. Beer and wine were good. Very nice selection, a couple of drafts, and overall solid. So good there. I really wanted spicy mustard so we got the pretzels. They were good, a bit chewy on the outside, but the two mustards were fan-tas-tic. For dinner, wife had the house salad (she didn't like) I had the weiner schnitzel. It was excellent. Once we were officially seated the service was very good. I'd come back. You expect, from the view outside, to go into a divey little bar establishment, get your drink and nachos on- instead you get blown away with a limited seating seriously high end dining experience. I went in to part take in the Jolly Pumpkin Tap Take-over- and was astonished to see rack of lamb, spetzel and all sorts of awesomeness!!!!!!!! Not only was the staff super friendly, the wine selection superbly selected- the food was impeccably crafted. I now know- when ever I need my German cuisine fix.......
