Oh Stein's- how far you have fallen. Stopped in on a Sunday morning around 9. One other customer there. Use to be line out the door at this time. Ordered 2 breakfast sandwiches on bagels and waited 20 minutes for them. And they were bland. Even the bagels tasted different- like bread, not boiled yummy chewy goodness like they use to be. This star is really 1.5 I work in the area and pop in for lunch or breakfast. The food overall is middling at best but the problem is the service. Almost every time I go they get my order wrong. Grilled chicken instead of breaded. Wrong type of bagel. Missing lettuce or some other sandwich ingredient. Its almost comical how reliable they are at NOT giving me what I asked for. I went in yesterday for take out. The man making sandwiches Was not wearing a mask around his face it was around his neck. He said good morning to me and I said you should be wearing your mask and he says today's one thing tomorrow is another and he didn't put it on. The owner came out of the kitchen without a mask on. The girl who is helping me did have amask on and when I said something to her she laughed and said jokingly to the other ones, guys put your masks on. Will never go back there again. STEINS BAGELS...you have turned me into a bagel snob. In the past week I have enjoyed Einstein Bagels in Pacific Beach CA, apparently I've been away from NY for so long I thought they tasted great. Now laughing at my foolishness. Then I had Brooklyn Bagels in Arlington VA. Sure, tasty. The owners of this place are extremely rude and makes the place very unfriendly. They were asked to make a sandwich which was ice cold when it was supposed to be a hot sandwich. When they were asked to fix it and make it hot, I was given and attitude then was refused a refund when they began to ask for more money bc of them having to make it hot. She then ignored me and began to try and take costumers over my shoulder. I go to this place frequently. No more! I wouldn't give them anymore buisness. Three stars for the bagels. The other food is entirely inconsistent. But be warned: MOST of the workers are beyond rude and must be related to the owner else they'd be gone. I watched as an older hearing impaired person ordered some bagels and the young man behind the counter repeated back to him the wrong bagels three times. Finally, in exasperation, the older man said, "I cannot hear what your saying, could you please come closer?" The result of that was a knowing stare, sigh and look of utter annoyance from the countrer person. Then, the angry comment to the customer, "What IS your problem, sh*t head?" A 3 star lunch...this is what I get for cheating on my regular deli. I was dropping something off at UPS and thought I would give Stein's a whirl. We've gotten decent bagels from there before but I've never had any of their sandwiches. After ordering my usual (turkey & swiss on wheat, lettuce, mayo, mustard) I immediately regretted my decision after looking at the huge menu and delicious-sounding combinations. I even thought to myself "Hm, maybe I will have to come here more often." Sadly, my sandwich missed the mark so I don't know if I would be back to try out anything else. It was extremely dry - not sure where the mayo/mustard went - and even something about the meat/cheese itself felt a little "off". You know that color cheese gets when it's been sitting out at room temp a little too long? It has that darker yellow/orange color with a really rubbery look to it. Well, that's how my cheese looked on my sandwich. And even the taste of the turkey wasn't what I had hoped. I'll be skipping Stein's for lunch/dinner, but still keeping them on tap as a bagel option in the morning. read more

Less than average sandwich and decent soup. Ordered a sandwich of the day that came in a toasted roll with breaded chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, and some mayo. The breaded chicken was very stale and tasteless. Bread was way too big and very dry. The only decent thing was the mushroom soup that i ordered. Overall, it's a very average bagel shop in the suburbs with nothing great to offer. If you're in the area and just need to fill your stomach with some type of food, then this might offer you some choices, but don't expect a delicious meal out of it. I've been eating Steins bagels for many years now, and I am always satisfied. They changed owners over the past year or 2, and I was skeptical it would still be good, but their quality did not go change. I am a huge bagel critic. They are literally one of my favorite things to eat. Stein's makes bagels the way they should be-crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. Roast beef on rye with mayo, tomato, salt, and pepper. Easy, right? Not for these guys. No salt and pepper. So much mayo that it was oozing out of the bread. I had to take some off. One unripe slice of tomato in the middle and cut in half with the bread. The roast beef was so well done it was rubbery and just slapped on in a couple of small apparently hastily grabbed hunks, not slices. This is the third time I've been here since moving into the area. Run of the mill place that really should be better. The morning bagels are great, but that's really about it. I've come back here countless times for lunch and have always been disappointed. Like other Yelpers have said... there's something always a bit "off" about their food, like its' been laying out for a bit too long and definitely lacks freshness. My office orders from here once a week and I really enjoy everything on the menu. From their bagels to the sandwiches to the soups, everything tastes great. The Italian chicken panini and the egg salad sandwich are some of my favorites. I also really like the cream of mushroom soup they make in the colder months. Steins has progressive been getting worse. Over the last few weeks I've ordered the same sandwich....egg & bacon, they only could execute twice. One day there is no egg, only bacon, a cheese sandwich. Besides executing my order incorrectly 80% of the time. I've never been charged the same amount twice....it can sway a dollar in any direction. I have been coming here for a few months since I discovered this place just. These bagels are really great--and this is coming from a person who knows good bagels. I found the service at Steins to be really good. I get the sense that they care for their customers. I am vegetarian and ordering from a deli can be an interesting experience. I asked if they had a whole variety of veggies for my sandwich and together we assembled an amazing sandwich! Most delis outside of NYC don't carry avocado. I was thrilled to add that to my array of other veggies. They did not make me feel weird or annoying for my uncommon order. They helped me feel good about what we put together and that is honestly a beautiful thing. I also order breakfasts and lunch platters for catering often. They make lovely platters--even of bagels. They give five or more flavors of cream cheese with the platter of bagels. It is really nice. My guys rave about the sandwiches when we order from here. If you enjoy giving your orders to the rude owner, Jay, who is about 5 foot tall and wears a Mr. T. starter kit around his neck, or the sparse employees, most of whom don't speak English...have fun. I used to go to their first location further North on Chestnut Ridge Road, and they had old time Jewish Deli Guys, who knew how to "shear cream cheese" and put out NICE bagels and sandwiches. About five years ago they moved to a much larger space and they have a bunch of crappy aluminum chairs to sit on while you eat at their rarely cleaned tables. The walls are painted a cheerful black. The only reason they are busy is because there are so few places for lunch in this area. So they are crowded and noisy. But the place IS NOT CLEAN! The food is prepared on a dirty counter, by people who don't look like the kind of people you want touching your food. Often no gloves are used while handling your food, and if they have gloves on, they use them to touch money and use cleaning products. Yuccck!! Look at the gloves...they are filthy. I don't want disgusting gloves that are handling dirty money going near my food. One sign of an unclean restaurant, a dirty bathroom. Theirs is usually filthy. Urine on the floor, unhygienic toilet seats, and toilet paper everywhere. Your mom or wife would never ever use their bathroom! To be fair, their bagels are usually good, but I shudder to think about what goes on in the back while they are making bagels?? Is the table clean where they roll the bagels? Are the bagel ovens spotless? One more thing, the dopey kid that runs the place, Jay, who calls himself Mighty Mouse because of his small size, is cheap with his employees while he verbally abuses them behind the counter. He is too busy counting his money and evading paying his taxes to even think about the right way to treat people. For better bagels, clean and pleasant atmosphere go to Ronnie's Bagels in Hillsdale or Bernie's Bagels in Allendale. Their sandwiches, food and bagels are way better. Chow for now! read more

I've been ordering from here for years. We order at our workplace whether for lunch, breakfast or bagels for the entire company. Food is more on the average side and portions can be a little sketchy. However, bagels are generally really good. Breakfast sandwiches are hit or miss as seen in other reviews/pictures. Now I've had co-workers complain about this place saying the food isn't anything special and that the place is dirty. I always defended Stein's (having worked in the food/restaurant industry myself) as a place with heavy traffic and a lot of works can get a little dirty, I generally liked their bagels and never really disliked any other food. After being told it was dirty I did start to pay attention a little more and it is a little dirtier than it should be. Now the main reason I am writing this review is the TERRIBLE service. We order from here frequently for work as stated above. This time they got a part of the order wrong (also important to note it was delivery that arrived at 12:30). No big deal, it happens. I called and explained and it was left off I would be getting the correct order. I get busy with work and 1:45 rolls around so I go to check if it was dropped off. It was not. I call them and they tell me that we ordered wrong, they could not possibly be wrong and that they will do me a favor and give me the correct sandwich for free, BUT I had to come pick it up. They said they could not deliver just that and that they are already losing out on this especially since the "correct" sandwich costs more. I explain this is terrible customer service and that there is a chance they misheard and now an hour and half later I have to come pick it up. She just claimed I am not wrong you are wrong basically and did not want to argue. At this point I'm starving and its not worth arguing either so I tell them I'm coming to pick it up now and hang up. I show up there and wait in line. They ask how can I help you and I tell them the situation. Not only did they not have it ready after all that they then had to ask again what I wanted. Two workers there begrudgingly took/made the order and whispered to each other (most likely about me). Next they say your order is ready and have the nerve to say well give it you for free but its actually a dollar more. I say I don't care take the dollar because you will never be seeing me again. Terrible, terrible service. If you need a quick bagel and cream cheese and this place is on the way go for it. Otherwise I'd recommend to try all the other bagel place options within miles of this location. read more

Their food is actually decent but time and time again they prove incapable of following the simplest of directions to the point where it becomes obvious that they are not even listening to you and just nodding their head in an effort to take your order and move onto the next. If you go there during off hours and there is absolutely no one in line nor waiting you've got a 50/50 chance of getting your order right... If your thinking about getting lunch there however anytime b/t 11AM-2PM you've maybe got a 10% chance of getting your order right. I'm not talking about complex orders here either, I'm talking about simple things like a tuna melt. On multiple occasions I have very clearly and specifically requested that they "put it on the grill like a grilled cheese" yet for whatever reason I can not fathom they will say yes to the request and then go and melt the cheese with the toaster. The Woodcliff Lake // Montvale Chestnut Ridge Road corridor seriously lacks a good lunch spot so despite the continued frustration they present I find myself there about once a week and am always disappointed. read more

The level of quality and service has declined over the past number of years. The staff there seems like is always changing and there's never enough people to keep up with the morning rush. I see people just standing around behind the counter doing nothing at points when there's a long line. They get orders wrong sometimes and charge you different prices on various days. One day last month I saw the delivery boy (who I think may be the owner's son) behind the counter handling food without gloves. They consistently run out of plain bagels & mini bagels by noon. How does a bagel store run out of plain bagels during the lunch rush?? Most of the staff are rude and nasty, not to mention impatient, acting like they are doing me a favor. I would call ahead to place my order and arrive at the pick-up counter where they pretend to not see me even though my sandwich was right there on the counter. EXTREMELY RUDE STAFF!!!!! do not spend your money here. We have been ordering from steins for years now but the staff has been getting ruder and ruder and now its time that we cant take it any more. They are always very nasty and impatient, especially when you call in a business order. You would think they would be happy to get business. Today, i decided to give them another chance. I called in an order and went to pick it up. there were 9 people in line waiting to place orders. The rude girl that works there was at the front of the store ringing up a man who had only gotten coffee. (which is why I CALLED IN THE ORDER in the first place). her reply? "NOPE. we're busy. you have to wait." and walked away from me. So i walked out... they have lost our business for good. I have been going to Stein's for years and I am always happy with the service and food! Stein's has everything you would want! From bagels, sandwiches, soup, salads, etc...I definitely recommend the tuna wrap with American cheese melted in the Panini maker (sooo good!) Bagels are fresh and delicious!
