The beer selection here is great and priced well, $7.50 for a liter! However we got the cheeseburger and fries and they were not good. It was just a bun and a patty, no lettuce, tomato, etc. We ordered off the bar menu and were informed fries don't come with the burger, so we ordered a side of fries to split. When the food came out there were fries with one burger and some romaine lettuce with some dressing with the other burger. Had we known this we wouldn't have ordered the side of fries. The staff is friendly but they obviously still need to work the kinks out. In addition, the fries could use improvement. I'm not a big fan of crinkle cut fries out of a bag. We didn't try any of the German food so that could be better, but we saw some plates come out and the portion sizes didn't seem to measure up to the menu prices. Overall I would come back for a beer and to watch a game but definitely not for the food. read more

Great beers - need more selections but I am sure they are working on it. Food was decent but expensive compare to other pub places. Awesome service! I think some people complain about kids being in a pub place like this but I don't think it should be a problem since every where else in the world allow kids to sit in a pub. I think having a glass of wine or beer to accompany a meal seems to be underrated in America. I would totally go there again to drink beers. I wish I could give this place 5 stars since they're almost there! Like others have said the staff is so friendly, its family owned and operated and they truly do want you to have a good experience. But, and yes, there's a but, the menu needs work. I've gotten the sausage combo both times I've been there almost out of lack of choice because there really isn't anything else on the menu. The food was delicious and I love the German fare like I emntioned but there isn';t enough of it on the menu. This place needs an entire German menu with a couple american things not the other way around. Also, they should lower their prices so people will want to come back for strictly the food and beer & not debate going somewhere else. I dig German food, so I was happy to see this place during one night out. I've been there 3 times in the past week or so. The food is really good and reasonably priced. German food tends to be really overpriced in SF. I had the Bratwurst one evening and the wienerschnitzel another. I loved both and loved the sauerkraut. We came here last night to watch the Warriors game and watched the team DEMOLISH the Cavs! Whoot-woot! The place was packed and we went through some nicely priced and great tasting German beers while making friends along the way. Beer was priced $3/small, $5/medium, and $9/large. I'm not much of a beer drinker but I enjoyed their Hefeweizen which they recommended. The long bar faces a wall with a row several flat screen televisions, it's a great place to watch a game. There are newish tables and seating that also face the TVs, if that's your preference. We ordered some schnitzel, calamari, and goulash. You definitely don't need come here just for the food since it didn't really knock our socks off, but we were glad that they offer them since we were famished and enabled us to have more beers! Totally an A-OK time. I have a friend who's a regular and says it's a bit quiet and have older clientele. I am giving it an extra star because it is family owned and they are super nice people who remember their customers' names. (It's just a disappearing breed of business in San Francisco). Its more quit than the library with a sterile look and boring feel. Picture a quiet Starbucks with people working quietly and you'll feel right at home. For a restaurant named something that brings images of German beer they hardly have anything on tap and it definitely isn't any fun. There are a multitude of TV's with various sports, all on mute and the piped in music coming out of one small speaker can hardly be heard. The food isn't bad but its such a dull atmosphere that its just not worth it. If its still around in six months I'll come back to see what changed. read more

Everything I had at Stein's was just fine. The food and beer was good and solid. I was hoping for a larger selection of beer- especially beer that I had not already tried and couldn't find anywhere else. The menu was also a little strange- there were a bunch of American-style apps like chicken fingers and the German specialties were smaller gourmet portions. I am pretty sure the brats were homemade and they were delicious, it's just that I was a little confused about what this place is going for. Is it neighborhood bar? Foodie German? Hoffbrau? There are also a bunch of TVs which always annoys me when I'm trying to eat and hang out with my friends. This place has a lot of potential, and I'm stoked to have a sports bar/German restaurant so close to my apartment. Yay! The Ambiance: I agree with some other yelpers about the identity of the place. It's not really a bar, but not entirely a restaurant. I'd say it has more potential as a bar, since they have so many TVs playing sports, and great beer prices. Seriously, great beer prices: 1 Liter for $7.50. Mmmmm. I would replace the two person tables with community tables/picnic benches. That will make the space feel more comfortable and casual. Be a bar, go for it! The food: - Schnitzel: Good - lighter and less breading than other places, which I really enjoyed - Calamari: It's not my favorite dish to begin with, but this calamari wasn't cleaned properly, which comes across as a little sloppy. I'd skip it. Overall I think this place is a good addition to the inner Richmond and serves my sports and booze needs. I hope they iron out the kinks and pick what side of the restaurant / bar fence they would like to be on. I hope that I can improve my Yelp rating in a few months. Don't let me down, Steins! What a treat! We were curious when we stopped into Steins, and we're glad we found this charming, unpretentious little hangout. The food was simple, remarkably good and affordable. The beer and wine selection had a lot of decent, affordable selections. The atmosphere is homey and the help is friendly. We came in almost at closing and still felt welcome, which made us especially happy. We plan on making this one of our regular spots for an uncomplicated bite in a welcoming spot. read more

The outside looks ghetto with part of their signage missing but the sandwich board boasted Happy Hour Every Hour $5 House Wine on one side in nice writing. We were early for our dinner reservations across the street so we decided to pop in for a drink. Stein serves food too so all the tables had place settings except for these two half sized picinic-like tables. Two of us originally sat at the bar and then moved to the picnic table near the door. It just had one bench so we all sat together and could hear each other easily. Every time the door opened, we could smell the fresh seafood from next door. It wasn't a bad thing but definitely catches you by surprise at first. It was 545 and the bar only had two seats left and three tables were full near the back, mostly retired aged patrons. The noise level was fine. There were five good sized TVs on but muted. Everyone seemed to know each other and the staff was really friendly and attentive. They had a lot of wine options though the $5 specials did not include a German wine. I had a glass of Reisling off the regularly priced menu and that was the only German one I could find. The guys had Hofbrau Sommer served in large glasses that looked like steins but were not earthenware like an actual stein. They liked the beer though. I classic spot to be for Happy Hour. Just come before 6pm M-F. I would give it a 3.5stars, but I'm just rounding up. Note: If you want to make reservations, at least half of the people need to be there to get a table. However you can opt to go to the courtyard and find a bench/barrel for your group. It's always hard to find a great place for happy hour. Not only do you need to have great drinks, but also great food as well. Stein's offer both and they're not that bad either. I usually stick with the appetizer choices from the HH menu. The house fries are a must have. The meats are ok. Pretty tender, but not all that flavorful. As for the drinks, they offer a variety during HH for your party. This is one of the advantages if you have cocktail, wine, and beer drinkers. Because Steins offer something for each of them. Though the list isn't that much, but at least there's something for everyone in your party if people care for different things. Be sure to try their versions of the classic cocktails. They taste a bit lighter than the traditional. read more

Stein's falls somewhere between a restaurant and a bar: more food than a bar, more drunks than a restaurant. The comestibles fulfill common stereotypes of German food: comforting yes, but somewhat bland. The pork cutlet in the jägerschnitzel (on special that night) was flavorful but dry. Same with my girlfriend's pork chop. Maybe this is an authentic taste of Mitteleuropa. It's not like bad food doesn't exist in Germany! On to the beer: the selection is enough for a restaurant but not enough for a bar. However, I cannot fault Stein's for selling Staropramen at a reasonable rate. That, along with the service are the high points. On balance, Stein's isn't worth rushing across town for, but is still a good enough neighborhood spot with reasonably-priced beer. read more

I want to like this place and I hope they can sort out whether they are a sports bar, or a beer garden. Kinda a strange spot, but who knows it could work. The bison burger I had was not bad, and the fries were fantastic. Service was top notch the waitress and bar tender are as friendly as it gets. I am not one who cares or ever writes about decode, but this place looks like it is a bar on one side and a chinese restaurant on the other. The best part about Steins is the $7.50 liters, seriously! The reason I gave this place two stars and not more, is that the beer selection leaves a lot more to be desired. Mostly name brand, nothing amazing, most of them are too similar in style. They serve Stella, which for a restaurant like that they are wasting a tap serving that beer. I feel like they need to go do some homework at Schroders, Suppenkuche, and Monks Kettle. So happy to have this new German restaurant with amazing authentic beers in the neighborhood! My husband had the special of the day: pork chop with mashed potatoes and sauerkraut. I had a cheese burger with fries. Everything was fresh and tasty without being too trendy or gourmet. The prices are very reasonable and the diners are families, singles and low key. The only reason for 4 stars is that the German food is so good and lovingly prepared but it is overshadowed by the many tv screens with different sports going on. Loud too. With such high quality beer and food I don't think it has to compete in the "sports bar" league. read more

OK I am taking into account that this is a new place still...you can still smell pain. I've been to other new restaurants and have felt more welcome with more atmosphere. One of the owners Veronica was there...good to see that an owner is making her presence felt. But she didn't interact with anyone that wasn't at the bar. Didn't greet anyone coming in and didn't make an effort to speak to anyone sitting at the tables, ask them what they think, etc. It seemed like she was running on auto-pilot now that the place is up and running. The food while good, needs some work on it's presentation. Now I can't really compare apples to apples here....so let's say compare to a granny smith of Suppenkuche and a Fuji apple of Social Kitchen & Brewery to the Gravenstein apple of Steins. Suppenkuche has much better atmosphere, service and more authentic German food. Great big selection of German beers. Modest simple presentation of their food. No fluff, no muss. Social Kitchen & Brewery has more inviting, welcoming staff, the service is great and the presentation of the food is creative yet simple, with little twists on basic things. Rich the bartender (not Rick the brew master) is very friendly and always asking everyone their opinions on the beer and food. Great to talk to. I had the wiener schnitzel which while good seemed overly hammered/tenderized. The pork chop could have been a little thicker/bigger. The steak looked pretty good, the couple next to us got it and I think they got that right. I also saw someone ordered the burger and fries. Which I thought looked really plain, had no effort put into it. Looked like it came from Denny's. I will say...that $7.50 for a liter of German beer is FAN-TASTIC. There's also five flat screens on the wall over the bar which is great for sports. Don't understand why there's one that's bigger than the others...again, presentation/uniformity. It's great to have a German bar on Clement Street, Inner Richmond. I've been frequenting Steins since moving into the area in April. It's become my go to bar mainly because I love German beer. They do not have an endless list of brew, but what they do have is well tapped and served at the right temperature. I really like the weekly beer specials, which is usually $3 for .3 liter, $5 for a .5 liter, and $9 for a full liter. I like to drink several .3 liters, that way my beer doesn't get too warm before I'm done drinking it. The service is grand. Kind, friendly bartenders who are very conscientious and service oriented. Steins also hosts a Monday evening trivia night. The prize: beer! I give Steins 4 stars because I haven't tried much food wise. I will say this: the gulash is so good! It is hearty and heart warming and affordable. If you happen to be strolling down Clement Street and wish you could drink good German beer, Steins is the answer ! read more

I went here for lunch the other day and was very impressed. I love German beers, but I'm not a huge fan of German food, so I'm thrilled that they've basically combined an American sports bar with a German beer list and decor. They have great choices for the beer selection, but I would love it if they added about 5 more taps, since they have plenty of room. That would definitely push it from a 4-star to a 5-star for me. The food was actually top-notch pub fare. The pricing is a little strange, but the fish and chips are a good deal at 8 or 9 bucks. Worst meal I've had since Y2K. The $16.00 weiner schnitzel was dried out and tough. It must have been sitting under a heating lamp for a very long time. The schnitzel was served with three lonely little plain boiled potatoes. It was such a poor meal that any price would have been over-priced, but $16.00? Obscene. A salad came first, and was decent. 4 stars for the beer, 3 stars for the food and service. German food is passable - better at Cafe Europa but I like the beer selection here and it's a bit more cost effective to eat here. The beers are all European lagers and pilsners for the most part with a few exceptions. My husband loves the 1 L steins and the TVs for watching various games. You can sit at the long bar and ask them to tune to your favorite game. Definitely a good place to go in the neighborhood to grab a beer and chat with friends. Wish the food was a tiny bit better / more creative or a bit cheaper but the beer is an excellent deal! Plus this place is super clean and not a divey as other bars around the Richmond. Service ranges from attentive to oops they forgot about you but it's never so busy that you can't flag someone down. read more
