Came here to wash off the drivel which is Monday and ran into one of the best bartenders I've met in a while Tara. Attentive, awesome energy, fun to be around and most important served up the right drinks to wash off Monday. Definately coming back. The cali coast is a good beer as well as the das something. I did an internet research and found Stein's on yelp. I decided to treat my brother and his girlfriend who were visiting the Bay Area to dinner there. When we got there it was Thursday after 9 pm. The restaurant was in a very comfortable casual setting (the table setting had the cloth napkins) with a full bar. The place was nice and clean! The beautiful young lady, Mandy, who served the tables and the bar at that time gave us the most friendly greeting when we walked in. And her service was excellent (my guests don't speak English). All three of us tried their Steak Dinner (New York Steak, $19.00 including salad, mashed potatoes, and vegetable). The portion was huge (the steak was 16oz.). The food was delicious: fresh green salad with a couple of different salad dressing on the side; very tasty steak and it was cooked exactly as we ordered; remarkable homemade mashed potatoes with butter (not like many restaurants nowadays who serve boxed flaked potatoes). My guests and I enjoyed the dinner very much! This is the best-value Steak dinner in San Francisco, and I highly recommend it! Thank Mandy and the Chef again for the wonderful dinner and experience. Family owned so it holds a special place for me. Everyone who works here is really nice and has great suggestions for food. Food isn't much to write home about but does the trick when you need to much and chug beer. The comical size of a 1L mug really grabs your attention and the TVs everywhere is a huge plus. read more

With all due respect to Mar A's post on 1/22, I must disagree with the characterization of the staff and atmosphere during the football game. My husband and I were customers sitting at the bar throughout the entire game. The restaurant was loud and raucous which we did not mind, nor did the staff we were talking seem to mind. What was bothersome was the incredibly loud group sitting at the tables behind us. While we were there, they got louder, were standing up on the benches, and knocked over at least one large stein of beer. The more the alcohol flowed, the louder and more irritating the group became, and the fouler the language got. Any of these could have been a reason for the staff to address the group, at the least asking them to settle down. But the topper was when the Niner's scored, two of the young men were celebrating so aggressively that I was knocked in the back of the head and pitched forward into the bar. It was at that point that the wait staff interceded and requested that the group settle down some. They easily could have asked the group to leave, but they chose not to. Instead, they simply requested that the group be a little more cognizant of their behavior and its impact upon the other customers. For one to infer that this makes the staff uptight, or to suggest that they need to loosen their leiderhosen is absurd. To us, this was the appropriate response from the staff and owners in insuring that ALL of their customers are treated well when frequenting their establishment. This is one of the MANY reasons that we return time and again to Steins and recommend it to all of our friends. We will be there on Superbowl Sunday as it still remains for us a fabulous place to watch the game, eat good food, drink good beer, and socialize with the Steiner Family! read more

Came in on a sunday morning for some football and breakfast. Lets just say the waitress had one of the worst attitudes I have ever seen. She made it seem like a hassle that we had come in, and when I asked her to change the channel on one of the TV's, it seemed like I was asking for a million dollars. I figured she was having a bad day, so kill em with kindness right? Not! The whole meal she was rude and to say the least, she ruined Steins for me. The food was terrible as well. I ordered the some bacon, potatoes and eggs. The bacon was dry, the eggs were mediocre, and the Potatoes were cold and felt like they had been out for days. Everyone at my table agreed. The best thing about this place was the 5 televisions. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone. I will never return and never recommend this bar to anyone in the Clement area. I live right down the street from this place so we were really excited to have a new spot open where we could go and have a beer. I love beer. So my boyfriend and I headed down there on a Saturday to check it out. We just wanted to have a beer and maybe an appetizer, no dinner. There was no room at the bar so they gladly seated us at a table where we could see the MLB playoffs on the tv. One of the family owners came over and introduced herself (Vanessa or Veronica, I think), she was very nice and welcoming. We ordered some calamari, SO GOOD! Then we each ordered a stein, which was awesome cause you basically get like 4 beers for $7. I think we wound up having 2 or 3 each. So needless to say we had a good time our first trip. I will say however, that they seem to be a bit confused about what they want to be. They either want to be a German restaurant or a bar with a gimmick (the steins). Personally I found the space they are in to be a bit uncomfortable the way they are utilizing it. I think they should really just be a pub that has food and make it more of a casual hang out space. I think they'd do better business that way. I don't know a whole lot of families that want to take their kids to dinner at a place where people are drinking buckets of beer and watching sports, just sayin'. But I am sad to say that I'm not sure if we'll be back there anytime soon. We decided to go back only a day or two later and were quite displeased. We walked in and had a seat at the bar, only to be completely ignored by the bartender. And I mean completely ignored. I know he saw us sit down because I made eye contact with him. He was a little too busy flirting with the girls next to us to serve us right away but I figured no big deal, I'll give him a few mins. Then he proceeded to start washing some glasses, RIGHT in front of us! If he had looked up our noses would have been touching. He seemed to be intentionally ignoring us and went back to flirting with the girls to my left. We finally had it when he then went to help the man on the other side of us as soon as he approached the bar. I know he saw us leaving cause I turned around and made eye contact with him again, he didn't seem to be too bothered by our departure. I'm bummed because I was really digging the steins but after that last experience I've just had no desire to return. Maybe, given a little time, they'll work their kinks out (and teach there bartenders a thing or two about customer service) and I'll try again but for now I guess I'll just have to stick to my tried and true watering holes. read more

Great service - quick, attentive, flexible, at least on a fairly mellow night. Good selection of German beers, and a fairly typical (if limited) menu. I was surprised to see mozzarella sticks but not pretzels, however. And although the off-menu sausage platter (choose 3 for $15) has tasty sausages, I found both the mashed potatoes and the spatzle to be bland. I suggest adding butter and a shake of salt and pepper. When I peeked in to check out the new restaurant and glance at the menu, a man at the bar told me it was a family place and the owners were all second-generation restauranteurs. Which was a little surprising in retrospect, because it felt very clumsy and like they didn't know what they wanted to be. Were they authentic home made German food? Were they a burger joint? Even the burgers were undeclared in their personality - for twelve bucks I'd expect a "gourmet" style burger. This was served on a white sesame seed bun and the crinkle cut fries were clearly from frozen. My salad was good, my sauerkraut was good, but I doubt the bratwurst was homemade and they put *bean sprouts* on my companion's veggie burger when he asked for onions. All in all a weird mish-mash of mediocrity. I brought my husband home some of the goulash soup, he said it would have been excellent - except he had deal with quite a bit of gristle. The atmosphere, however was really nice. Chill but lively, lots of big screen televisions and clean. The service was fast and friendly. Extensive beer selection served in steins to fit the name. As a place to get a beer and watch a ball game, it would be five stars. I don't drink beer (I like it, but migraines won't let me), so for me it was a two star experience. read more

Folks were in town and I was showing them the "real Chinatown" that is the Inner Richmond when we walked past this place and I turned my head and went "What's this?" Inside looked clean, modern and busy! I stepped into the street to read the name of the place, "Steins" = German Beer! we go in for a beer and to watch the Tigers and Lions (I'm from MI). 2 beers and a diet coke (for my lightweight mother) for $10.50?? For Real? Family owned,Alex and Phil are not only very attractive (Angie, remember me? ;) haha) but are complete gentlemen and grateful for your business. I suggested a tap sampler since all their beers are perfect for sitting through a 2 or 3 hour game, not getting too ridiculous or spending too much $! I LOVE Steins, but I don't want to give the impression that this is a biased review, so allow me to make a few comments: 1 - While the name and portions of the menu suggest that this is a German restaurant: it is not. The family who owns and operates the joint are the Steiners. . . .hence the play on their name. Do not come here expecting the largest and finest array of German foods and beers ever seen in the Bay Area. 2 - The bank of TVs above the bar, dutifully displaying futball, football, soccer, whatever. . . they suggest that this is a sports bar: it is not. Yes, the family and regular patrons love sports and watch many many matches. . . but this is not the rowdy place where hundreds of loud drunkards gather to make a mess and fight. What is Steins, then? Steins is simply an AMAZING family owned and operated restaurant/bar, where folks can enjoy a simple meal of solid food with an excellent (albeit not exhaustive) selection of beers and wine, German and not. The service and personalities are first rate, and the regular clientele are fabulous. Steins is clean, quiet and calm enough to sit and work on a laptop or read, but there's always great music and plenty of sports to hear and see. Some claim that Steins has a bit of an identity crisis. . . . this is kind of true. Rather than being a very good and very limited German restaurant, sports bar, dive bar, etc. . . Steins is a FANTASTIC and versatile place where the patrons steer the identity on a nightly basis. This is the place to be if you know who you are and don't need some tacky decor or overstyled staff ramming "identity" down your throat. Try the burger! This is one of the finest no-frills burgers in SF. . . . no gimmicks, just plain delicious. Try the specials! Stopped in here to watch the second half of the world cup game between Germany and Algeria. The place was packed so all I could do it was to get a beer and watch the match by one of the doors. Once the game was over most of people left and I could sit down and order food. I ordered the sausage, mashed potatoes and sauerkraut plate and I really did not enjoy it but it's probably because I am not used to this type of food. I'll probably come back to the bar next week to watch Germany playing France and I will order something different so that I can see if the food was off or if it was just me. read more

In terms of the burger I had there, I have to say it was amongst the BEST I've had in SF, second only to Brenda's. It was handmade, not some frozen patty. It was perfectly cooked, and the bacon on it was generous and superb. It felt like it was cooked right at that time, it wasn't bacon sitting around pre-cooked in a pan or something. It was cheap too, starting at $8.50 and coming with fries. The fries were delicious too. The restaurant itself felt more like a sportsbar than a German restaurant. I didn't really see any German cuisine, but they just opened up recently so I'm sure the menu is still in flux. It's family-owned and the owners were super nice, so as long as they maintain this quality level I'm definitely going there again. read more

The owner of the place makes a fantastic burger. I love being able to see the cook and there is something extremely appealing about an old dude making my burger - it's almost like you can taste the decades of happy barbeques. This place is run by a family (seriously!!): the old couple cooks, the sons bartend, and the daughter and daughter in law wait on you. Everyone is super friendly! I go there with a bunch of friends to watch sports and eat and they're completely fine with me just sitting and finishing up a game, long after I've finished my food. All of them will take the time to chat with you at the bar or at your table The beer battered shrimp with honey mustard sauce is to die for. Honestly, it's some of the best shrimp I've ever had. I really want to give Steins 5 stars but I have to agree with other people, their menu could use a little bit of work, especially with deserts! I was a bit disappointed when all they had was vanilla ice cream. I really want this place to succeed. It's very good for being so new (opened 6 months ago) and the people are super great. They have a wall just filled with TV's. This is a great place to watch a game or three different ones at the same time. They also have a pretty vast selection of beers and when I wasn't sure which I wanted, they were happy to let me sample a few. The servers were all really nice and accommodating. My food came out a bit subpar (cheese hadn't melted on those mozzarella sticks), but they didn't hesitate to remake them for me. And even when my team lost at the end of the day, I still felt good and I guess that's what a good bar does (but then again maybe it's just the beer). read more

The Wienerschnitzel was dry and had little taste, The Goulash had good pieces of meat, but was not cooked in the sauce, the sauce was just ladled over it. Positive attributes: Clean interior. Friendly, attentive service. Good price for beers. Nice televisions. But! The food is really, honestly, pretty bad. From the rolls, to the salad, the calamari, the bratwurst, the goulash, and the schnitzel, it was all bad. All the food was boring and way under-seasoned, especially the schnitzel. Schnitzel should be deliciously tender, flavorful pork with a delicate, golden crust. My schnitzel looked so sad and colorless on the plate my appetite went out the window. The flavor was nonexistent, and the texture was very dry and saw-dusty. One lonely lemon did it's best to perk up the plate but it was really no use. This place is wayyyyyyyy overpriced for the quality. Besides, this place has a total identity crises: calamari + schnitzel + sports bar? It's so weird in there. With all the amazing food Clement has to offer, do not waste your money here unless what you are looking for is a quiet place to drink beer and watch sports on the nice flatscreens they have. I think if they want to stay in business they need to seriously re-evaluate whether there is any culinary potential here that can compete with the great restaurants in the hood. They should ditch the food and just make it a bar with a pool table, darts, and sports. read more

I was so happy my friend suggested this spot. We both are big fans of German beer and Steins did not disappoint. They have a great selection and a daily (or maybe weekly?) beer which is what I got. Our waitress was so great to us. We asked a bunch of questions about the beer and she was very patient and helped us all make our choices. Very casual place and with the cheap prices for huge beers I'll definitely be back! I got the chili for dinner and it was delicious, perfect for SF weather and served in a huge bowl. read more

Love this little spot. What a nice addition to the neighborhood. They did a great job utilizing the space they had to work with, which is elongated and rectangular; maximizing the opportunity for as many people as possible to watch whatever game is on. Also has a cute picnic table in the back for those who want to chat with friends and don't need to see the game. The food was delicious! While not expansive, the beer and wine selection was stellar in terms of quality and affordability. We were celebrating and had a bottle of champagne named after our favorite Musketeer that was a) delicious and b) $15!! Shocking!! Also, for the girls...the bathroom was impeccable - which is always awesome. The best thing about Stein's is the service. Lovely, lovely attentive people who really want you to have a good time. Cannot say enough about that - if you're looking for something trendy with that "look at me, look at me" thing going on, Steins might not be for you. I love this place. It's great for watching games or just grabbing a beer. They do not service any hard alcohol, but they have an amazing selection of German beers. The food is also delicious. They have great classics like fried calamari and burgers, which was good nothing special, but they also have a great selection of German food. My boyfriend got the spicy smoked brats and it was amazing. We also got the mozzarella sticks and shrimp appetizers, both we're great. Definitely a place to check out. read more
