The Italian dip sandwich with a side of french onion soup is my favorite thing on the menu, I have tried almost everything there and have yet to be disappointed. The food was pretty good, however, unfortunately we were sat under some open windows right in front of the sever station where we spent our meal listening to servers complain about their customers, and couldn't help but feel like we were also included in their opinions. Stella's is one of our favorite local places to dine. Good food and beer and a nice ambience. It's an old fire house that's been converted to a restaurant, with a lovely patio and an open and bright inside dining area. It's a great place to dine inside and out. That said... The service is lacking, not just lacking but almost non-existent. Sometimes it can be nice to be left to your own pleasantries, especially if you're enjoying an evening out without pressing obligations. Sometimes, however, the waiter does not even allow the other people in your party to order an appetizer. Let alone an entree! That was the experience we had with some friends while dining there recently. I felt embarrassed and disappointed for inviting them to one of our favorite places to dine! Oh how we talked it up!.....and oh what an extreme let down it ended up being for them! I feel conflicted about recommending this place to anyone in the future. On one hand I love it and on the other how can I recommend a place to someone if there's a possibility of said persons not even being given the opportunity to order a meal!? That said, I think if the attitude of the staff could be adjusted to a more relaxed and friendly nature, more patrons would love this place as well. read more

We had a party of 9 people for dinner on a Friday night. Two were children. We got seated right away. We ordered appetizers and drinks they came out quickly. We waited 1 hour before our dinner arrived. The restaurant was not busy. Our waitress told us she was done for her shift and we ended up with a different waitress. The Food was good, The bread it was cold. The service was horrible. And I will not eat at Stella's again. read more

What a bunch of crap. I am now at Trolley Square, after having arrived at Stella at 2130 (that's 9:30 p.m. For you folks who don't know how to read military time, to be told, "We're closed." I suggested they might want to update Google to their apparent closing time of 2130. I was pissed, and they knew it, and they all looked at each other like, "Maybe we should just help her." (I mentioned all I wanted was take away). I left. Sitting here now at Trolley Square, I pulled up the ACTUAL website, and lo and behold: closing time on a Saturday night is 2200 (10 p.m.) so what's your staff's problem? I'll never go back there. I'll be happy to give my tips to these much friendlier people at Trolley. If you're fine with your staff closing upwards of 1/2 hour early though, why don't you update your website to say so? I drove 1/2 hour out of my way to get you. So you get the middle finger and a "never again" from me. Jerks. read more

The building, decor and ambience are great but the food lacked. In the past I've loved the Pub and Red Butte sister restaurants but even the Pub's food has worsened over the years. We went to Stella Wednesday evening and The Pub on Thursday evening and I was unimpressed enough to not return for a very long time. Their website has a brunch menu so we planned to go on a Saturday at 11, which is the time the menu stated brunch started. We got there at 11 and they weren't open. So we decided to run some errands and come back. When we came back they were open, but after we were seated they gave us lunch/dinner menus. We asked about brunch, but the server told us they stopped serving brunch a long time ago. I was pretty disappointed, but we decided to order since we were very hungry. We got the hanger steak sandwich with chips and a French onion soup. Everything tasted good, but the steak sandwich was TINY! It was like a small half sandwich, and since it was an open faced sandwich there was only one tiny slice of bread on the bottom. Wow, after 20 years of eating at "The Pub" aka Desert Edge Brewery, I was excited to try Stella. Great decor, good vibe and service, very disappointing food. Crab cakes tasted like fish sticks and French onion soup paled compared to sister restaurant. Back to The Pub for us. read more

This is one of my all time favorite restaurants. I have been several times now and the hangar steak salad is my all time favorite steak salad. It far surpasses other steak salads that I have paid way more for (i.e. Brio, cubby's) I love the chips and bean dip and usually treat myself to a cherry coke ONLY at Stella (cause they do it right!) That being said, service has been hit and miss (I have felt rather ignored twice) and I have had one time where the food just wasn't as good as in the past. I am hoping it was a one time thing though. All in all..this really is one of my favorite places! read more

We're big fans of the Desert Edge Brew Pub, owned and operated by the same people who run Stella Grill, Red Butte Cafe and Martine. Our actual experience at Stella Grill was pretty disappointing, however. The crab cakes tasted like they were out of a Costco box and the French Onion soup -- one of our favs at the Desert Edge -- sorely lacked seasoning. We licked our wounds with a big slice of cheese cake for dessert which was thankfully very good. The decor is great and location, now that we live in the burbs, even better but I'm sorry to report that with all the other great choices in the valley we'll likely not be back. read more

My friends and I have been going to Stella's for years, on Wednesday's for their shrimp and artichoke pasta salad. We went there today and ordered the salad and I couldn't believe what I got!!!! I had to really dig for the shrimp and artichoke, I got 2 small broccoli flowerettes and a maybe four pieces of tomato!! Very disappointed!!! Way too expensive of a salad for dressing and pasta. The bread is lucious though! I will never order this salad again. I may never go to this restaurant again!! read more

When I first heard about Stella Grill, I thought that it would be a restaurant that served Pub style food, which I love. When I walked inside, it looked a lot more classy than any other Pub I had ever seen and was very intrigued to see what the food was like. Stella is one of the coolest restaurants I've seen in awhile. Although some of the walls are a little plain, there are a couple of walls that are old manual garage doors with windows on them, which I thought was really cool and something I had never seen before. We were greeted and seated immediately, even on a Friday night. I think Stella Grill is the best kept secret in Salt Lake. The noise level was not too loud and my friends and I were still able to hear each other and communicate over the other customers conversations. Stella is the perfect place for friends to get together, date nights, family nights, or any other occasion. They have a appetizer, dinner, and lunch menu. The appetizers are vegetarian and carnivore friendly which was great because I went there with a vegetarian. We got the stuffed goat cheese platter that came with amazing crustinis. The goat cheese was stuffed with mint, roasted peppers and olives and was drizzled with honey. These were all flavors that I would have never expected to go together and was not even going to eat, but my friend insisted I try it. Now when I go to Stella, I order it no matter how full I am; it is one of the most amazing things I have ever eaten. The dinner menu is very sophisticated serving duck, shrimp, sirloin steak, roasted chicken, mashed potatoes, and yukon potatoes. My friend got the duck dish and he said it was like eating at a fine dinning restaurant. My only pointer is that I would not bring any picky eaters to Stella because all of the unique flavors in their dishes; you definitely have to be open minded and adventurous to appreciate these flavors. Although you might be scared to try Stella because of the interesting combination of flavors that some people (like me) might not think go together, the flavors definitely work and are insanely delicious mixed together. The dinner menu was small and only served meat options, so they allowed my friend and I to order from the lunch menu (they serve the lunch menu the whole day; it wasn't just exclusive to us that day). All their soups, salads, sandwiches, and pasta salads of the day all incredible. You get a big sandwich with your choice of bread (cheddar onion is my favorite) with a side of the most amazing and flavorful pasta salad I have ever eaten, and potato chips. They also have daily specials like Korean hanger steak, chicken tortilla soup and BBQ chicken flatbread pizza, which are all incredible as well. From the appetizers to the dinners to the lunch options, any meal you order will most definitely fill you up. The best thing about Stella besides their interesting and sophisticated blend of flavors for a 'grill' is the low prices for the amount of food you get on your plate. A lunch meal with a sandwich, loads of pasta salad and chips is only $9.95, and the majority of the time I end up bringing half of it home for the following days lunch (the food is still delicious the next day). If your even hungry after that meal, they have amazing dessert too! Their flourless chocolate cake, pecan pie, and raspberry swirl cheesecake are all super delicious. The only flaw to having such wonderful dessert is that their meals are so incredible, large, and filling that there are many times where you will not have room to eat it all in one visit. You're going to have to come back again to try that appetizer, lunch, dinner, or dessert that you wanted to try, but missed out on. Oh well, looks like you'll just have to come back to enjoy some more outstanding food. read more

The food is decent, but both times I went there it took almost an hour for them to bring out our food and we were only a group of four. Both times it was lunch time but it didn't seem overly busy and they didn't seem particularly worried about how long it was taking. I was with colleagues from work and nobody plans on going back there because it takes too long. I won't be going back there anytime soon. read more

First off, the ladies next to us got a drink tipped over on the table. Nobody got wet (boring I know) but the ladies had the audacity to ask for half off on their bill because of the spill. Yeah, what hoes. If you also would have asked for half off we probably wouldn't get along. I mean for real it was just an accident. Anyway, the whole restaurant is decorated in a really light and chill manner. Waitress was chill, all the people working there seemed to enjoy their job. I got the Italian dip sandwich, definitely not bad. Neither was the side of pasta salad and the odd choice of chips. As an appetizer I got bruchetta and goat cheese. Also delich...honestly, just come here it's chill. I went at like a 5 on a Tuesday so there were lots of older people there for the early bird special. I have to go get checked for osteoporosis now. Basically this place has a very relaxed, cafe type of feel, but can also be chill for dessert and it's also cheap. So enjoy you bastards. read more

Horrible!!! We had an awful experience there. I couldn't figure out what type of resturant it was. They had mexican food, italian food, burgers, it was too much and overwhelmed me. Obviously the chef is overwhelmed as well since my food was bland and our server was awful. I had to ask 3 times for a refill on my water. Took FOREVER for the food to come out. I've been to Stella's a few times and it's actually been ok. But the most recent visit was highly disappointing! It took us about 2 hours to get out. Whatever you do don't order the pork loin or the prawns and pasta dish (or as we like to refer to it, the 5 pieces of prawns, handful of pasta, swimming in a soupy mess dish.) Our waiter was the worst part. He left us sitting there for about 15-20 minutes before taking our order and it took about 45 minutes to get our food. When the pasta arrived, it just looked disgusting and after a few bites my roommate said something when the waiter finally came back. His response after we asked for something different was, "What do you want me to do about it?" He was rude and unresponsive to our needs as customers. Cutting through my pork chop was like sawing through wood. It was tough, and this was especially disappointing since I specifically asked how tender the pork was. He did bring us some side salads and a side of mashed potatoes at our request, but that took about another 15 minutes to get, and he didn't even ask us what kind of dressing we would like with our salads. When the bill came it was outrageous. He did take off the pasta but still charged us 50% for the pork chop because I'd eaten part of it (mostly because I was starving and it took awhile to get the replacement food.) In addition, our 3rd comrade ordered some prime rib which was actually quite good, but the reason we ordered it was due to the positioning of the specialty item on the chalkboard listing the evening's specials. The way the price was listed stated $12.99, when in actuality the price was signifying the price for the item below the prime rib. Besides that our ticket was listed incorrectly, and the prime rib was listed as "item - $25." When my roommate asked to speak to the manager, we found out our waiter was actually the MANAGER! For a manager to be so rude to us is unacceptable. When we confronted him about him being rude, his response was, "I've never had anyone complain about our food before," and, "well, the pork loin cut is a new cut for us," and, "why would I tell you what the price of the prime rib is? You would never have purchased it if you did! And our chef didn't want our prime rib price listed anyway." Despite all this, my roommate still left a decent tip and when my other roommate tried to hand it to him he threw it on the floor and left us standing there. Now I must say this is the FIRST time I've ever had this experience and I would normally never report a restaurant for one bad night, but our experience was SOOOO bad and because our experience was with the manager instead of a regular waiter, I felt the need to say something. I've never written a review for a restaurant before, but beware the light-haired manager/waiter, with tattoos. He also seemed a bit sexist toward us, The time it took for us to get our food was absolutely ridiculous because there really were only maybe 5 other tables in the whole restaurant besides us. I've tried to go back to let another manager know about our awful experience, but the couple times I've returned the only manager on duty was the same terrible one on duty when we were there. I will not go back for awhile and I definitely want to contact another manager or supervisor to let them know about this disaster of a meal. read more

I've loved this restaurant - I've been going there for over 5 years, we always ask for J.C as our server as he is the BEST - however now, I will not be going back. My husband's birthday is in a little over week so I called to make reservations for a Friday night (10 days in advance) for 12 people. I was told on the phone no reservations on Friday or Saturday night. I replied that I have been doing that for the last several years for our larger parties and asked if that had recently changed. He replied no, that has been in place for the last 4 years. I asked to speak to the manager since I have been a regular customer there and wanted to guarantee a table on a weekend night for my husband's birthday - he replied that he was the manager and no exceptions. So, it looks like we'll be going somewhere else - where we'll be ordering appetizers, cocktails, wine, dinner and dessert for 12 people. Stella Grill = FAIL. read more

We have been to Stella Grill before and loved it. This last visit was disappointing. We ordered the Carne Asada quesadilla. It was good. It came with some great pico de gallo, handmade guacamole and sour cream. Next my husband ordered the Seafood Chowder. Again, very good, creamy with great flavor. I ordered a salad...I don't recall the name. It had grapes, candied walnuts, pomegranate seeds and balsamic dressing with goat cheese. Very good. My husband, for his main dish ordered a steak, rare. It was not quite rare, but he seemed to like it. My meal is where the problem occurred. I ordered the Lamb Osso Bucco with roasted red pepper risotto. Sounds delicous, right? The Lamb was dry and flavorless, the risotto was bland. But, the strange thing is they both had an after taste of vinegar...like pickles. I sent that back and ordered the Pork Chop. It came with a potato roulade and a apple chutney. The Apple chutney was pretty good. The first bite of pork chop came from a thin part of the chop. It was good, with the chutney, as the chop was not seasoned in any way. The potato roulade was okay, pretty flavorless and seemed a bit burnt on the outside. I cut into the thick part of the chop, it was pink. I'm not one to eat pork undercooked. The menu nor the waitress said nothing about the fact that they undercook the pork. But when I told the waitress that it was infact undercooked. She stated "That's how they always cook it" I said, well, I don't eat undercooked pork and asked her to take it back. I was not angry, and I was just done with their dishes. I did not want to experience another poorly made main dish. She came back and offered to let me order a salad to go, since the kitchen was now closed. They also asked me if I wanted to take the last dish home, and I didn't want to bother with it. We went to pay and my husband asked to speak with the cook. Again, we were not angry, we just wanted to ask him if he was cooking for himself or his customers. The manager seemed put out that we wanted to speak to the source, and not talk to her about the issue, she did not cook the meals. We finally were able to speak with the cook, and he understood where we were coming from. The manager, and now our waitress, both seemed very offended that we were not happy with my meal. We only wanted to give them feed back, maybe let your customers know that the pork is intentionally undercooked and it can be cooked further if you prefer. The waitress said "I asked her if she wanted it cooked further" That actually did not happen at all. They insisted that they did offer to cook it more. We left, disappointed that they were not open to listening to their customers feedback. We will not be visiting again. read more

I have been frequenting this place since it opened. Every experience I've had with the food and services been absolutely positive. I go there about once a month on Wednesday evenings after my work is finished for the day. I've been a fan of the waiter JC for about 12 years when I first encountered him Red Butte Café. I don't think I've ever been to the restaurant when he wasn't there. It is a wonderful neighborhood café. Every time I go in there I recognize some patrons that I've seen before. The place has a very loyal following. I've taken out of town friends there and they immediately fell in love with the place. Tonight, after a difficult day at work, as I was walking by the front windows I looked in and saw the bartender, Pate look at me and give me a big welcoming smile. It was one of the bright spots of my day. All the other employees there have always been efficient and friendly and competent. I don't eat meat but can recommend the fish tacos, veggie tacos or any of the salads. I eat fish tacos wherever I go and these are amongst the best. I highly recommend this place or any of the Pub Group restaurants. They really know how to create good food and a welcoming atmosphere. read more

I went their expecting it to be really good. I went because I remember when it was Bubba's grill and wanted to see it. We got there got seated almost immediately. When our waited came over he was not friendly at all! He just kind of grumbled at us when we asked for water. When he came back I asked him what was in the bbq pork sandwich and he just grumbled at me some more. We asked for duck rolls and after they arrived ( after at least 20 minutes) they tasted pretty good. So after we ate our duck rolls we waited, and waited, and waited, and watched all the people who arrived after us receive their food. Finally when our food arrived our waited brought us over it plopped it in front of us not even saying something like I hope you enjoy. My BBQ pork sand which was just so so. It was extremely runny ( I like a juicy pork sand which as much as the next person but this was literally like 65% juice). The potato chips were stale and tasted like they had been taken out of a lays bag a week ago. Overall I will not be going here again. It just wasn't that good and the waiter service sucked. read more
