After being on the road for hours, I was in need of good food. I pulled this place up on Yelp, and made the effort to find parking nearby. This is my sole warning to this place, parking can be a bit challenging. And now, for the positives... I walked in to a very busy restaurant. Since I was alone, I was able to sit at the bar immediately. I sat next to two people who were locals. I was able to get a lot of insider tips from them. One of them was starting medical school in the fall, so the conversation continued to flow throughout my time there. This restaurant is nice. It has a dark and intimate environment. The bar area can sit about two dozen people, and there are plenty of tables both inside the place, and on the outside patio at the back of the building. The staff was very friendly, and the place was clean and efficiently run. The bartender who took care of my food and drinks was super cool, and made sure I was taken care of. He checked on me often, and I didn't have to ask for refills on my drink. To eat, I had the filet mignon, which was a lot tastier than any I've had up to that point. It came with a side of macaroni, which was delicious but no exceedingly heavy. It was an outstanding dining experience, I would definitely be back one day. read more

We had a great time at Stella's and before we left we were already planning out our next visit. We had Saturday night reservations after a few previous failed attempts, but we finally made it. Arrived to a busy, bustling restaurant with many happy diners. The entrance is a little tight, and difficult to wait if more than 4 people. But we didn't wait long before a neat little 2 top was ready for us. I really liked the 2 U-shaped bars that were also available for seating, while it's not as intimate it is always fun sitting with others, to experience a good dinner. Our server arrived in due time and started the night. I am sorry to say we cannot remember her name, but she was so friendly, and engaging all night. It's nice to have servers who are sincerely nice and take time to chit chat. We noticed through out the night that the other staff appeared to be just as friendly and were quick to help each other with food service and clearing plates. Good job Stella's! We were torn between what to order, so many good choices. First we were going classic Greek (spanakopita, pastichio, etc), but we ended up with a Greek seafood feast. The menu has an adequate selection of meze plates that could fill your table. We decided on the octopus and kreatopita, both were so delicious. The octopus grilled perfectly, then dusted with Greek spices/oregano. Amazing! The kreatopita was just as wonderful, crispy phylo rolls filled with a warm ground beef, cheese and béchamel. It was like a Greek egg roll, so good. We shared a black kale salad, with cheeses, lemon, & dijon. It was different, not my favorite. But Alan loved it. As entrees we ordered the shrimp santorini & fish special. The shrimp were WINNER! A plateful of sautéed shrimp with a small Greek tomato sauce, feta cheese and parsley. YUM! We were surprised by how simple, yet flavorful this dish was. The side of Greek orzo, with hint of cinnamon was such a good side. The tile fish special was good well, flavored right with Greek spices, and sitting on top of a orzo & vegetable medley. Our server had suggested a Greek wine for the meal, it added great flavor and feel to our meal. We couldn't leave without dessert, and we went with the galaktoboureko and tiramaso. Both were just as wonderful as each previous dish, and were delicious. Thank you Stella's! We loved the dinner. Such good service. Wow! Stella's never fails to deliver. The staff is friendly, the space is gorgeous (beautiful bar area and a nice patio), the menu accommodates all eating styles, and the food is AMAZING (and the portions are extremely generous). I don't often indulge in cheese, but when I do I like it to be on fire. The saganaki at Stella's is probably the best I've ever had. From the perfectly crusty edges to the oozy center....this is my idea of heaven. With a cocktail or glass of wine, this is a great start to any meal. We've been here for both lunch and dinner and had equally great experiences and meals. We've sampled starters, sides, entrees, desserts and it's all been outstanding. From the moment you walk in the door, you feel welcomed and know you're going to have a great time and some really exceptional food. Stella's just gets everything right. This was probably one of the worst experiences in going in a large crowd to a restaurant of this caliber. There is no customer service , we were a party of 9 , we got additional items that we did not order , my friend ordered an item which was smelling too bad and had to send back ! No courtesies for any items that were not palatable or in excess . Instead when we decided that the bill was outrageous, and skipped tipping, ( for what was palatable ) we were chased outside the restaurant and the manager demanded that we tip ! Understandably there was nothing wrong with the waitress , she was accommodating and friendly . It's he management and the food quality . Mind you that all of us on our table have travelled the world and here is one of the first establishment where customer was not number 1 I will not recommend this place to anyone .very disappointing. read more

Amazing Greek food! I got the beets (a pet peeve of mine is that most beet dishes are a delivery mechanism for bad goat cheese) with vinegar & garlic, which were great. I think of the Stella's calamari, with its olives and artichokes, every time I see only fried calamari. And the leg of lamb was excellent. I also got the cheesecake dessert, which was ok but I was stuffed by the time I ate it. Also good service, and a nice selection of local beers. Easily my new favorite restaurant downtown. I've been twice for dinner and once for brunch since they've opened, and each time the food has been amazing and the service has been spot on. The menu is huge so expect some difficulty when it comes to choosing what to order. The portion sizes are also large - you'll leave full and will have leftovers to take with you. The octopus is the best I've had anywhere - and I've been to Greece! More favorites include the braised lamb shank, shrimp Santorini, and Stella's calamari with sundried tomatoes and artichokes. The bread they bring out to start is delicious, but even better is the olive oil. I'd recommend making a reservation in advance so you can snag a regular table, or sit out back on their beautiful patio. The bar area is for walk in's, and I'm personally not a fan of the bar stools. They're screwed into the ground so you can't move them at all, making it hard to share food and hard for conversation. Can't wait to go back and continue to work my way through the menu! read more

Stella lost her groove. Admittedly, haven't been in a few months ----- very surprised to find out that one of the best happy hours is no more. We were the only customers at 4:30 and had to wait 20 minutes for two undersized , mediocre dishes. ( Yia Yia veg dish was 80% potato). Tito rocks was MAYBE 1 1/2 oz. pour. Here's the kicker ---- we liked the HH menu so much , we'd run a $100 tab. Knowing that we were getting a deal --- I'd tip 25 - 30% . We left around 5:30 ---- WE WERE THE ONLY BAR DINERS ! Great food, decor & ambiance. The Feta Fourno was absolutely spectacular, we also had the special Mussels which were tasty & very large, the halloumi and the hummus and tabouli. I wouldn't order the hummus again as it was average and there's so many other good mezze dishes to try. There were two of us eating and four plays filled us right up! We also had a dessert affogato with salted caramel gelato which was delicious. When they say big portions, they mean big portions! Sat inside for dinner on a Tuesday night and it was fabulous. The atmosphere inside is decorated amazingly and it is very unique and clean. I definitely want to go back and sit at the counter bar area. Got the lamb frites as my entree even though it was an appetizer and it was plenty! Even took leftovers home! Their entrees are huge and decently priced where you feel like you are in a high end restaurant but you're not breaking the bank. The Westendorf will sadly be missed but welcome to the neighborhood, Stella! I always say..."these are my people!" But I'm pretty sure there is not a drop of Greek blood in my body...I just wish I could be adopted into their family and culture! Ah! I should marry a Greek man! But then would I have to eat red meat?? Not worth it! But a visit to this impeccably decorated great for lunch spot definitely is. Ample food servings at an affordable price for lunch...I was tempted to have a glass of wine and be unproductive the rest of the afternoon. Small dining room with few table tops but if you are a single or just dining with one guest you can usually find a counter seat or two open. The counter is well attended by 2 servers so that your customer service experience is positive and those tables are flipped in a timely manner. The salads looked huge and amazing, but I tried a special of the day, which essentially was spanikopita served over fried potatoes with an egg over easy on top. I just am a sucker for an egg over easy on top. Say "egg over easy on top" at the end of a description of most any entree and I'm sold. My friend ordered the lamb gyro and loved it. We were disappointed in ourselves for not ordering the hummus and tabbouleh appetizer, but it would have been waaaayyyy too much food... I had an absolutely amazing experience at Stella's last night! I'm still smiling about it today. I met a group of fellow Yelpers for a reservation at 7pm. We sat outside on their small patio. The music, lighting and ambiance was immediately intoxicating. I felt transported to Greece. Our table decided to order a group of appetizers because the menu was so large, and so tempting, we couldn't decide on just one entree each! We ordered: Keftedes - lamb and beef meatballs. absolute perfection. slight saltiness. savory, crisp outside. Saganaki: literally, FLAMING cheese! Its a plate of slightly sharp, super savory and slightly salty cheese that made me smile ear to ear. It is served with Pita bread and a lemon wedge - a small squeeze on top brings it all together. Incredible. Spanikopita: the best I've ever had. Perfectly light, flaky and crispy phylo dough and a savory mix of spinach, feta and onions + a tzatziki dipping sauce. Lamb frites: this is a massive dish. Its certainly sized-to-share. Tasty lamb "shavings" top very large potato "steak-cut" frites. The whole dish is served in a large bowl with a serving spoon. And sits in a slightly-cheesy broth. Super delicious and savory - but again, massive portion. More than enough for 2. I also ordered an Onassis cocktail - champagne, rum, mint, lime and simple syrup. A very strong drink - without any "booziness." It was a delight, and paired perfectly with all of the bites I enjoyed. While looking for a mid-day lunch that might satisfy everyone in our group, we came upon Stella's and decided that the Yelp reviews looked favorable, and the pictures of the food sealed the deal. I wanted to apologize up front to the staff, because we arrived 19 minutes before closing with a party of 8 on Saturday, but they all greeted us with smiles and took care of us from start to finish, even with our party having 3 children under the age of 10. Thank you from a dad who didn't want to walk around anymore :-) You get 5 stars just for that. The food ... I use the word amazing a lot, and I really want to use it again, but ... ok, it was amazing! We started off with an appetizer of these little donut ball things that are covered in a sweet honey and cinnamon topping. Outside is crusty and the inside is heaven. We ordered two cups of them, and everyone in our party had at least one. For myself, I ordered the eggs benedict, which had poached eggs on top of crab meet, English muffin, a spectacular hollandaise sauce, and a little bit of magical love to complete each bite. It came with a side of roasted asparagus and potatoes (hash brown style). I ate as much as I could while trying to keep my daughter from eating the food off of my plate. The plate came with grapes too, but I think she ate all of them. Her order was a crab omelet, and although the menu has it loaded with onions and tomatoes, they took those off for her, and so she had a crab, cheese, and egg omelet. We devoured that too. The cheese wasn't your typical cheese that a six year old would eat either, but she loved it and ate it all. Ray was our server, and he was attentive and friendly to all. For those who pay attention to these sort of things, Ray was also the proud owner of a very cool beard, so if that helps you with making your decision to come here, so be it. We'll definitely be back again in the future, but I've been told to leave my Marlon Brando ("Stella!!!") impression at home... probably for the best. read more

OMG!!! This place did not disappoint! I had to basically beg manfriend to come with me (new, hip places be damned) and finally after many weeks of whining, he obliged. And guess what restaurant has made his top list in Charleston? Yep. TL;DR: order the specials, large portions, great drinks, even better food, cool vibes. The ambiance is awesome. It's dimly lit, but there's plenty of light to see. Basically it's like the sexy filter so bring a date to show him/her that you're just as good looking as your profile pic. They had a silent b&w film "Stella" playing against the brick wall. The Greek music was perfect; not too loud but could be heard. The main dining area is small but awesome. The setup is a few booths and then two U-shaped bars with permanent bar seats. They looked very comfortable and there was enough space between each that you wouldn't be knocking into your neighbor. A+ for the design. Our waiter, Phil, had the best personality and was easy on the eyes. He didn't steer us wrong and recommended we try the lamb shank next time. We had the mastic Mule and Santorini. I wasn't into the Mule. It was ok, but needed ginger beer or something else to make it stand out. The Santorini was awesome. Very refreshing and a little sweet. Ok, I confess I cannot pronounce half the words on the menu, nor will I'll be able to guess at the specials we had. But the specials. Stop traffic. First we had some sort of massive sausage stuffed with cheese on top of caramelized onions and Brussels sprouts. It was insane and needs to be on the menu for life. One bummer was that the onions weren't exactly caramelized, but unfortunately for manfriend, I like an onion any way you cut it. We decided to order a few tapas but as soon as manfriend heard their grouper special he ordered that. Holy crap that was some of the best fish I've ever had. It was prepared semi naked but had some sort of garlicky/buttery sauce that it was baked with inside the casserole dish along with veggies. It was seriously some good stuff. We also had the beets with cream fraiche and lemon zest which was phenomenal. The cream cut the lemon tartness and made for a perfect dish. The lamb frites were very good but heavy. Finally, we had the tria which was tzatziki, "caviar", and some sort of eggplant purée. I love eggplant, but I was totally turned off by the taste. That was the the only thing I didn't like. The caviar and tzatziki were extremely good, though. The caviar has a mousse consistency and was topped with a few capers which added the right amount of saltiness. The tria came with perfectly grilled pita slices, which made me sad that I ate the table bread that was brought out at the start. The olive oil and salt on the table was some good stuff. My wife were visiting Charleston and looking for a romantic restaurant that provided ample vegetarian and non-fried options. Stella's seemed to fit the bill so we gave it a try. We shared a hummus and taboule appetizer. It was pretty good, but not amazing. Having lived in the Middle East for years, my hummus standards are extremely high. I am a hummus purist. I like it rich and creamy with a mild, earthy flavor from the tehini and chickpeas. This wasn't bad hummus but it didn't do anything for me. I'm not sure how it was flavored - perhaps in a way traditional of Greece - but it didn't do much for me. The tabbouleh on the other hand was very good - it had a nice balance of bulgur to parsley (I prefer tabbouleh with more bulgur than parsley); I also liked that it wasn't too salty or too lemony or too liquidy. It was a solid hummus. For our entrees, we ended up ordering meat dishes after all. I ordered a pasta dish with beef spiced with cinnamon and clove. It was very good and had a nice subtle flavor. My wife ordered a lamb dish with cheese noodles. The lamb was very tender and very tasty- it seemed to have been prepared in a wine based sauce. We loved our entrees. The restaurant had a nice ambiance but I would hardly call it romantic. Yes it is dimly lit but it was noisy and pulsing with classic Bollywood music. Greek music might have felt more appropriate. All in all, a very solid restaurant that we'd love to come back to. read more

I felt the need to update this review because I got the opportunity to try a bunch of the menu items with some fellow Yelpers! Once again I ordered the Onassis, which is a light and refreshing cocktail that really kicks off the meal. For appetizers, we started with their bread dipped in an especially tasty olive oil. I usually don't like bread in straight up olive oil, but this olive oil was subtle in flavor, which I liked. After a healthy helping of bread, we dove into our variety of appetizers. I got a small taste of a lot of items on the menu, but I will just go into a few of my favorites. The first appetizer we tried was the keftedes, which are beef and lamb meatballs. This was my first experience eating meatballs that weren't covered in red sauce and they definitely had enough flavor to stand up on their own. They were perfectly seasoned and a little salty, which I enjoyed. We of course had to try the spanakopita and it was the best I've ever had. The phyllo was light and flaky and the filling had great flavor. The tzatziki it was served with added a creamy and fresh element to the dish. For the entree, I had the lamb shank served over noodles. It was a huge portion size, so I luckily had some left to take home with me. It was everything I was looking for in the dish: comforting, warm, and rich. I have loved everything that I've tried at Stella's so far, so definitely check it out. This place was recommended to me by a friend, and I admit, I was a bit skeptical. But boy, was I surprised! As soon as my wife and I walked into Stella's we were greeted. We sat at the bar where the service was EXCELLENT. The bartender answered all of our question about the menu, since neither one of us have ever really ate Greek food before. We decided to share a couple of plates, since its family style. We ate the mussels (special of the day), grilled halloumi (i still dreamed of these little cheese rolls), a cypriot salad and braised lamb shank (OMG FALL OFF THE BONE DELICIOUS). There are times when people recommend a restaurant and you expect so much, and the restaurant does not live up to the hype..... STELLA's is not that restaurant. Stella'a not only lives up to the hype but exceeds expectations. A coworker recommended Stella's to us so we decided to give it a try. Immediately I was impressed with the open kitchen, large bar and warm feeling of the restaurant. We opted to sit at the bar and received excellent attention from the bartenders. We sampled wines, tried the small plate of the day (the mussels... DELICIOUS), learned about their new olive oil... just great conversation with the staff all while still having time to enjoy our meal. We shared the mussels, grilled Halloumi, Cypriot salad, and the Braised Lamb Shank. The small plates were easily shareable and so much flavor. BUT BE MINDFUL... the portions on the main dishes are huge... which is a good thing but keep room. The lamb shank was up there with one of the best lamb dishes I've ever tasted. Alas, we went for lunch one day. As soon as we walked in, I was excited. The restaurant is absolutely gorgeous and full of life. The bars are low-set with several mounted seats with backs. There are several small booths around the periphery. As several people have said, this place is very classy...definitely a good work day lunch spot without being stuffy. Aside from the atmosphere, the food is phenomenal. The bread basket was fresh and warm. We started with the spanakopita--amazing. Four spinach/feta stuffed pastries (phyllo), served warm. I didn't get a chance to take a picture before they were inhaled. They were rich and delicious. We ordered the Lamb BLT w/ potato salad and Moussaka. The Lamb BLT was a good twist on a classic- the lamb added a nice dimension and substance. The potato salad is a cold dish, that was surprisingly refreshing. I was absolutely blown away by the Moussaka. This was also very rich..it had a little bit of a sweetness that I wasn't quite expecting but loved. Drinks- several cocktails and good wine list. I've been here a few times for work lunches and every time the food has been so delicious. Each time we've started with the spanakopita appetizer and the tzatziki sauce/dip that it comes with is one of the best I've had. I highly recommend the chicken souvlaki; the flavors are mouthwatering and the portion size is huge, so you won't be leaving hungry. The atmosphere is relaxed, making it perfect for an intimate lunch or dinner setting. They have a cool U-shaped bar in the middle of the main dining area that's perfect for happy hour or grabbing a quick bite. They also have plenty of tables to sit with your group inside as well as an outdoor dining area. The service here is always pleasant and timely. I would absolutely recommend you try Stella's at least once (because you will certainly be back for more). read more

We tend to shy away from casual downtown dining as public parking is, well, challenging at best; however, the lure of Stella's Richmond, VA menu (and Yelp reviews) was the magnet my hub needed to take a chance. We reserved our table on Resys ... so easy ... and found a parking spot right up the street at the well lit, clean St. Philip Parking Garage and within minutes we arrived and was warmly greeted. The space is small but every inch of space is used so well. There's just a few booths in the front room and a handful of tables in the back (facing a small parking lot) but where Stella's shines is the addition of two large semi circular counters ... each with the ability to seat and serve a large number of diners. We were shown to our table, actually a booth for two. Initially, I thought it looked small and perhaps would be a bit awkward as I had a coat ... but the bench/seat was comfortable and the space was fine. The entire place was hopping ... the energy was all around us ... bustling servers running plates of flaming cheeses, bowls piled high with meatballs, heaps of salad ... lively Greek music ... and even a movie (Stella Dallas) streaming on the brick partition. Our server, Phil, (reflecting later was nothing less than fabulous) quickly approached our table, guided us through the menu and made several suggestions based on our familiarity with the cuisine (very) and appetite. He took our beverage orders (pinot gris for me ($9), house red for Joe ($7) which arrived, quickly, followed by a basket of warm, delicious homemade bread which we quickly began to dip into a tangy extra virgin olive oil that we poured from a can already on the table. Our starter, the Flatbread special ($14), soon arrived on a board and it was beautiful ... a large slice of lavosh bread topped with a spread of Greek Eggplant dip, pillows of tangy feta cheese, diced (almost sweet) butternut squash, and bits of tomatoes ... perfectly grilled then topped with cool, peppery arugula lettuce. Already cut into four slices, there was no mess. It was delicious ... a true explosion of flavors in each bite. My original thought for a second course was one of two Greek salads, Village or Classic (both $10) but Phil suggested that both portions were very large and perhaps too much for me. So, since Joe wanted a bowl of the Avgolemono soup ($8), I opted for a cup ($5) of the same. This choice was the weak point of the meal for both of us. Was it tasty? Yes! ... the egg, lemon chicken soup broth was smooth and yummy but there wasn't enough of the tender chicken and rice in my cup and certainly not enough in Joe's large bowl. We agreed that next time, we'll split a salad. As Joe has a big, big appetite, he walked in prepared to order the Moussaka; however, Phil's suggestion that he order the Braised Lamb Shank ($18) was right on point ... it was massive, hearty and a real eye-pleaser. It's served in a deep bowl over Stella's No.5 Noodles (seemed like Buccatini to me) with brown butter shank sauce. The fork tender lamb fell right off the bone and was delish; however, after that big bowl of soup, Joe was actually struggling to finish the course. (He does not take left overs.) I had my heart set on Bronzino - the grilled fish of the day ($26) but since it was not de-boned, I had to re-direct and let me tell you the Pork Souvlaki, served with fried potatoes ($15) did not disappoint: six ample chunks of grilled, fork tender pork tenderloin, grilled green pepper and onion and a huge portion of large wedged fried potatoes. It's served with a bit of lettuce topped with a cool Tzaziki sauce ... it was fabulous. As you might imagine, there was no room for dessert. Though Phil was bustling the whole time of our visit, he managed to have the courses timed perfectly (with a breather between each) and checked back multiple times for our feedback during which time we learned that he recently relocated from Baltimore ('right up the street from us'). it was great to see Steve Niketas, the owner, helping the runners and appreciated that he stopped by our table twice ... first, to introduce himself ... and later, for feedback and to tell us that brunch would be rolling out very soon. You're bound to find something (or in our case, many things) to love at Stella's as the menu of traditional Greek specialties (which includes lots of vegetarian options) is large. This place is divine!!! I am already planning my next visit. The set up is lovely. The bar has really comfy chairs and is large. There are booths inside, and a fairly good size outdoor area. The service was top notch. We had everything we needed from start to finish. The food was perfectly spaced out. It was hard to decide what to order so we split several of the mezzes. We had the lamb frites-to die for!! The flatbread special was delicious with artichokes, feta, eggplant spread and more! The spanokopita was perfect and the tzatziki Dip that accompanied it was sooooo good! I started with a fruity cocktail that was very fresh-perfect mix of liquor and fruits. I then switched to a Greek rosé that I thoroughly enjoyed. Our server had a great personality, and made the evening go very smoothly. Food: had the amazing octopus. Grilled to perfection, and super tender. Must try. We also had the Pikelia sampler platter. Great Greek food all around. Simply great. This restaurant has been in business for 6 months I was told, and they have dialed it in. Their food is a great value, as prices are lower than what I would expect to pay for that quality of food... Service: we sat at the cool low top bar they had with fixed barstools with armrests. Great and unique seating experience. The bar tenders took decent care of us, but were super friendly and hospitable. Atmosphere: again, the low top winding bar seats are unique and fun to sit in. The place has a unique feel. Super expensive for what it is and judging by the photos I thought the flavors for sure would be more impressive. Pretty much everything needed olive oil, salt, and pepper. We sat at the bar service was lackluster and the alcoholic drinks or overly sweet. read more

We have a tradition of eating out on NYE and were excited to close out the year at Stella's. We had enjoyed their food on a previous visit and decided that they would be our last meal of 2018. Sadly this 2nd visit was a very bad experience. What went wrong with this visit was the service and the main courses. We had mainly come for the tasty grilled Octopus which did not disappoint. We also had the Keftedes which were not bad but a little burnt which took away from the flavor. Our main courses came and alas my order was wrong. Yippee the waiter had sent the wrong dish to me. He said they would rush my order but that was not the case. After 20 minutes my order finally came to the table. I ended up eating off my wife and daughters plates during the long wait. I had ordered the Pikelia which before I had liked but this time it was not very good. I ended up boxing it up and then tossing it the next day. We had also ordered the Pastichio and Pastichiatho which are pretty similar in taste just a different style of pasta. Honestly they were in need of additional sauce and were very dry. They were half eaten and were also boxed up. When it came time to pay we ended up having to flag down the waiter after waiting 15 minutes for him to come by. Our drinks were also empty but that was par for the course for this trip. What a sad way to end 2018! I will not be returning to Stella's in 2019... read more

Wow!! This was probably one of the best things I ate while on our vacation. We got a bunch of appetizers and split them between my husband and I. The octopus was probably one of the best things I've eaten in my life, highly recommend. Everything we got was really good though! Our waitress was awesome and attentive. Beautiful atmosphere that I can best describe as high end, elegant diner. Friendly efficient service. Excellent food and tasty cocktails.

Disappointing. This is a highly regarded restaurant with a nice menu, but the ingredients and finished product weren't anything to write home about. Potatoes were dried out/undercooked inside and tomatoes on the sandwich were grainy. The halloumi salad wasn't exciting with 2 small pieces of cheese, a little mint and an overadundance of fennel (sliced and in dressing/marinade on grapes). I've been to Greece half a dozen times and this just wasn't the beautiful fresh food that comes out of YaYa's garden and kitchen. Bummer. read more
