Toasted Turkey Sub, and crispy curly fries.
Michael M.

Tasty crispy curly fries and delicious turkey subs! Owners are helpful (and busy). Nicely situated on the main Watertown road plenty of on street parking. A bit of a hole in the wall, but you can see the pizza oven and them working over it, which is pretty neat.

If you follow me you'll know that I stick strictly to reviews of old school joints and their MEATBALL GRINDER (aka Sub) game. Not all meatball subs are equal! And I'm always in search of that perfect sandwich. Stella's - to my shock - fell short. Their meatballs are not homemade!!! Why??? I was quite surprised given the old school feel of the place - it looks right out of the old days with the wooden booths and pizza ovens behind the counter. Why they don't use a homemade meatball is a mystery to me, because they has a very friendly and welcoming vibe and offered great customer service. The sub was tasty, with a very high quality marinara and just the right amount of toast on the roll and a good melt on the cheese. It was wrapped well and not too messy to eat. All pluses, but it fell short in term of the actual meatball, that tasted right out of the freezer section from Stop And Shop. While I waited, I got a slice and I think it suffered from that slow heat lamp death. The fresh pies going out the door looked ten times better then the reheated one I got. I might not be back from their grinder ... but I'd definitely revisit this joint to chat with their friendly owner, soak up the old school vibes and pick up a fresh and hopefully amazing pizza pie! Hey - they have anchovies here - Anchovies, please!! Stellllllaaaaah!!!!!

The store was clean and spacious. Plenty of good looking sausages and meats to bring home for cooking, but I came to grab some lunch. I got the prosciutto lovers and was happy with my choice. The bread was soft and a good texture. The sandwich had prosciutto, fresh mozz, basil leaves, tomatoes, and was seasoned with salt, pepper, and a drizzle of olive oil. Was it the most amazing sandwich I'd ever tasted? Nah, it was standard, but for less than $13 for a sandwich that was longer than my forearm, it was a fantastic deal. Service was speedy and the two folks who helped me out were friendly. There were two people in front of me, but I was in and out in about 5 minutes. Looking forward to trying their other sandwiches!

The folks behind the counter are sweet and accommodating. Most importantly, THE FOOD!!! We have the turkey blue cheese, the prosciutto lover, and the corned beef. Yum across the board, but the prosciutto was exceptional. The prices, especially for the quality and quantity, are much better than a typical sub shop ($8.50 for a sandwich in this neighborhood is straight up cheap these days and I could only finish half because it was so big!). Easy parking at the end of the block. Will come back and back and back. Will try the tuna next.

For food we ordered the eggplant sando and the chicken piccata sandwich. While both tasted good, I was surprised at how much more I enjoyed the eggplant one. The eggplant was breaded well and crispy without feeling too heavy on oil. The rest of the sandwich with arugula and roasted red peppers also felt fresh. The chicken sandwich was also good with thin layers of chicken, and flavored well. However I liked the chicken where as for eggplant I felt the sandwich as a whole worked well. While busy, it still feels like enough movement of groups that you can easily find a seat. The staff is also very friendly making it a neighborhood spot I would definitely come back to.

The bacon was crispy, broccoli roasted with seasoning, a perfectly cooked over medium egg all on a brioche bun. There was also spicy goat cheese spread on the slider, however there wasn't a lot there to taste it with every bite and it certainly wasn't spicy. I would have loved more of it, because the bites that did get some were absolutely delicious in enhancing flavor with the egg. The sandwich itself is larger than expected, bigger than a typical slider which was a pleasant surprise. I also ordered an incredible Apple Cheddar biscuit on the side. It was freshly made, buttery, and had little apple chunks in it. Great experience and I highly recommend visiting if you're looking for quick and convenient breakfast, with a great quality and fair price!

It's a pretty great sandwich, actually. I like the Boss, but there are many great options. There are just two things to keep in mind: 1) it's relatively expensive (though doable) 2) the sandwiches are quite rich and salty, often relying on a flavorful cream element (truffle cream, pistachio cream, etc.) As a result, I probably wouldn't go every day or even every week. But a once-a-month cadence or so would be great. Try it!
